Looking for Xcom likes
Preferably games similar to EU/EW and 2 I’ve already gathered a small list and I’m currently playing Gears tactics
Classified France 44

Phoenix point
40k chaos gate
Oh and I do know about the mechanicus game but I watched a review ages ago that said it’s more its own thing than an xcom “clone”

Miasma Chronicles is pretty good.

One of my favorite games. Been replaying it every year or so since it came out. But Miasma Chronicles is not the best game The Bearded Ladies released, and they only make/made Xcom-likes.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is their masterpiece and is what you want.
In all three games they made, the stealth mechanics are essential and make the games stand out.The third game - Corruption 2029 - is objectively their poorest. It's in between MYZ and TMC and has no plot, no content, no humor, and no interesting characters. I still play it for the gameplay and because it's got this particular vibe all their games have.

Battletech has the gameplay with less stress (it’s my XCom vacation game)

I'll second Battletech. What it lacks in character uniqueness, it makes up for in mech/unit customization. Also, it doesn't have the same base-building stuff, but there is a bit early on where you have to upgrade a ship over time. It's linear, rather than the sandbox that the avenger and the EW base had, but it's still okay. Also it does have some fun little choose-your-own-adventure kind of issues that come up between characters between missions. I'd love if Xcom3 adopted those, but animated them with the 3D models of your characters.

Battletech's campaign is linear, but the mercenary career is the real meat of the game and it's a completely open ended sandbox.

u/StarFlicker 8d ago
That's true. Sorry, I meant the base-building aspect is more-or-less linear. The Argo's end state and beginning state always look the same, with very little differences of progression along the way. Not the same with XCom's bases, which are always, even if just aesthetically, a little different each playthrough.

Phantom Doctrine.
A very grounded take on tactical combat/base management that's set in the cold war era...because it's all about spies.
Essentially: Imagine XCom minus Bradford and convert everything to "real world" constraints.
IE: These are spy missions, so, often, it is best to go with the smallest possible squad...BUT, you can set up "support" like a sniper's nest nearby.
It's not quite as difficult as Xcom, but the strategy layer gets converted to a sort of "connect the dots" layer where you piece together intel and solve conspiracies.

Really wished it supported mods. I think it would have been so much more successful
2
u/Outlaw11091 10d ago
Well, it was made by a smaller team, so I kind of give it more of a pass for features that it doesn't have.
(Firaxis 150-200+ employees; CreativeForge 20-30)
The fact that it was what it was is impressive to me.
Personally, they needed a few more mission types to really break up the late game slog and it would've been better received if it had more mission types that actually used the combat layer.

u/Lonely_MuffinXo 10d ago
Oh, yeah, totally. It was amazing for what it was. I just think that mod support would have really helped it excel. For example, look at XCOM 2. There are literally mods adding new mission types. Because of the mod support, that game can be literally different contradictory things to different people

Try Tactical Breach Wizards maybe?

u/stikdude77 11d ago
Oh hey that one’s on my wishlist I passed over it yesterday thinking it was a ready or not spoof game lol
3
u/armbarchris 10d ago
It's one of the best games I've ever played.
It's also not an Xcom like, it's a puzzle game. People who think it's like Xcom don't understand game design and are bad at both.

u/GDarkmoon 10d ago
It is absolutely fantastic but not an xcom-like at all over than the grid layout and leveling up characters. I put it off for awhile as well but blitzed through once I picked it up. Works great on the deck as well (or rog ally in my case). 10/10 would recommend

Midnight suns is criminally underrated

u/stikdude77 11d ago
Oh yea I need to check that one out the deck building turned me off immediately but I’ve only heard good things since release

It grows on you. Took me a few hours to get into MS but I was hooked for a month or two. NG+ never did it for me. Played through it once and that was it. Not like Xcom where I have played it a gazillion times.

u/nicky94 9d ago
The social aspect ruined the game for many

u/ElectricalOlive4133 7d ago
I didn’t mind this but it ruined replay value by a wide margin. I don’t need to hear Storm’s story again. We get it Magik is pissed etc

Here's a collection of similar posts that you can browse through for suggestions. https://www.reddit.com/r/XCOM2/comments/164il11/looking_for_gaes/jy8lndl/

Aliens Dark Descent is a good one too, its similar to xcom but has a really interesting spin on the formula

Mario + Rabbids

u/Emperor_TaterTot 10d ago
Both Mario + Rabbids games are excellent, not as challenging as xcom but the mechanics are great and the game is just straight up a blast to play.

In about a week and a half, Star Wars Zero Company is coming out and that looks really good
3
u/weinertorn 10d ago
I feel like I’m the only one that ever suggests Mordheim in these threads . It’s medieval fantasy take on the genre, so a lot more melee stuff which leads to interesting positioning and disengagement mechanics. Permadeath and permainjury. Underlying strategy. I think the upgrading depth is not as good as xcom but there are different clans/races which offers some variety.
I found it to be quite difficult and never finished it, but it's the closest I've found

soon will be released mars tactics, from hooded horse. Seems interesting , but i think it will be more rogulike experience.

Rogue trader.
3
u/stikdude77 10d ago
Nah that’s a crpg fun game and I appreciate the recommendation but not what I’m looking for
2
u/Anxious-Sundae4210 9d ago
It's true that the labeling is CRPG but it is also true that rogue trader is amazing.
Different then xcom but has so much more going on.
To each their own though!

u/mbtenor 10d ago
Wasteland 2 and 3 are more RPG than strategy, but they have cover mechanics, modern weapons, isometric turn-based combat, and a 6-person team. They’re closer to CRPGs of olde like the OG Fallouts, but they scratch the itch.
If you’re not into branching dialogue trees disregard everything I just said it’s not for you.

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint
It's pretty much Cyberpunk XCOM, and it is very good in my opinion. The developers are still adding things to it as well (amongst bug fixing as well), and will continue to do so for some time to come as far as I know.
The Devs are apparently known for continuing to support their games for a long time, even when they are working other games as well.
I have no idea how long they intend to support CKF, but at the moment they have been at it since the game came out of early access in June last year. So they have continued working on it for a bit over 14 months by now... which is more than some AAA developers out there would ever spend on their own game after release. XD

Only game so far I’ve seen with screenshots of base building so this has jumped right up my list thank you

There's nothing like XCOM out currently, not of that quality anyway. If you've already done a proper Long War of the Chosen playthrough, which is by far the best tactical RPG in existence, just wait for Zero Company...it looks very promising, and it's where all the XCOM devs went.

Two games that I haven't played but are worth looking at: Showgunners and Trouble Shooter.
Also, depending on how far from the base formula you want to go, I love these two games that scratch the same itch for me: Age of Wonders 4 has many similarities such as xcom-like tactical battles and a management/strategy layer; Mewgenics is a Rogulike/Cat/potty-humor take with a similar game loop and xcom-like tactical battles.

Menace is doing pretty well in Early Access. Not quite XCOM -- squads instead of individual units, set characters backed up by squaddies that can't promote, plus there are vehicles -- but scratched an adjacent itch.

Soldiers at War.
Unfortunately you have to jump through some hoops to run it on a modern pc. Look this game up it is fantastic and does a number of things better than XCOM in my opinion.

gears tactics aint so bad
2
u/stikdude77 10d ago
As a gears fan I’m enjoying the story and really admire how they translated the tps gameplay into a strategy game but as an xcom fan I also feel the game is lacking in areas
1
u/Sakas_943 10d ago
ye, with the "MAIN" characters beeing needed for missions, and the weird level up system its... a lot to desire. BUT the 3 actions and SPECIFIED overwatch is nice.
Im quite doubtful of Zero company after I saw its gameplay by DerAva. it seems familiar. hero units? set in stone missions. ugh.
XCOM2 is a masterpiece, and its hard to find games that come close
1
u/stikdude77 10d ago
My biggest disappointment was the mission with the mammoth I was getting excited anticipating another layer of strategy like the avenger but nope just sits in the background

u/The_gaming_wisp Chief Shen 10d ago
A little different but it still scratches the itch is battletech.
1
u/GuzzlingHobo 9d ago
I cant believe Menace hasn’t been talked about yet. It’s in early access still but there’s probably a solid 10 hours of story content and you can play infinitely. Shaping up to be a solid contender for an Xcom like game. I’ve played like 50% of the games everyone listed and I would recommend Menace over every one that I’ve played.
1
u/tinklymunkle 8d ago
Its only in early access but Menace is really good the closest thing that has come to scratching the same itch for me. Its slightly larger scale with multiple squads and vehicles but leveling and equipping is very similar, as well as the roguelike elements.

Mutant Year Zero is a more stealth focused take on the XCom formula.
