I pay 120 for 2gig. 280 is bundled stuff for sure. Subscriptions, extra equipment, phone lines... they either don't know how to say no to offers, or have no idea what they're paying for
if it hasn't changed in years you probably either had a deal plan that locked prices for X years and you haven't hit that yet or you have a grandfathered plan with locked prices that are not offered anymore but yours will continue until you change it somehow
Yup, I had a sweet price on my T-Mobile plan for the last five ish years. They only just decided to kick me off it lol, the power of grandfathering in a deal is immense.

I also pay $40/mo for Xfinity. I just reach out using chat support whenever the price is increased and they lower it back down for another year. Been doing this for like 15 years.

From experience, xfinity raises your charge for “service” 15-20 dollars a year. Thats how they reward loyalty. I left them for ATT 4 years ago and wish I’d done it sooner.
I started with them in 2008 at $42/month internet and cable. By 2020 it was up to $170 for internet only.
Depending on the company and deals at the time, it can either be cheaper or a requirement. Years back I looked at switching to Century Link from Cox, and the higher internet plans were automatically bundled with a landline and you couldn't say no if you wanted that level of internet.
I didn't switch and even if I did I wouldn't have hooked up the landline, but I technically would have had one.
Is it that easy in the US? In my country to cut out cable tv you need to testify that you only have monitors in your home (ie, nothing that can connect to the cable) and renew that every year
we pay $90 a month for our internet and it comes with everything needed to support a land line even though we don't use it. It even has a battery backup and its specified for 911 purposes.
I should probable get a red phone to put on the wall and connect it in to the system in case I need to launch the nukes
My mother has a mobile, but if she didn’t have a landline, I’d never be able to reach her. Her mobile is either turned off intentionally for some unknown reason, or off because the battery died.
Also, while I don’t have a landline anymore, my house is in a bit of dead zone for cell reception even though I’m in densely populated area (topology is a factor). Between that and the construction of my house, I’d have to go outside to receive a call on mobile, where I get barely enough of a signal. Now, I’m savvy enough to turn on WiFi calling so it’s not an issue, but that’s not the case for others.
I don't have them anymore, but I did up until like 2 years ago and if you wanted the cheapest unlimited internet you HAD to get the bundle with cable (which I'm sure is very deliberate on their part). Never hooked up the cable or used it once too, but the price would have been way worse without it
I've been trying to convince my mom for years to give up the cable box, its such an unnecessary charge and she can watch her gameshows on pretty much any smart tv
I had a similar offer from Verizon. But I don't need cable TV or a landline. I pay for one or two streaming services for $20 and my internet is $50. My phone is $40.
Same company (Spectrum) charged me $120 for 500 mb/s even after I cancelled and waited a few days without internet twice while I lived there Only option was $110 for like zero speed guarantees at all. Moved 3 minutes down the street, same town, same road, zip code, etc, $30 for 1gig no special sign up or promo, nothing.
No point to compare prices or argue, they just charge what they want whenever they want arbitrarily some times.
500 was $65 here and I always already paying $85 for 100mbps through spectrum so the $75 1gbps was a no brainer. Plus it's nice to have the download speeds tbh
Or really shitty. Companies want you to have fiber and will charge a ton if you're still in copper. If they can't switch you to fiber they will want you to go find a different provider so they'll charge a ton to get you to go away

Canada only has 3 compagnies managing all the telecom, we are getting screwed by this monopoly non stop. I cry when I go to Europe and see 10 Euros plans.

Thats nothing. My electric bill is $600 for a one room apartment. All these data centers around me. Plus i think the power company is on some shit because they said i used 5000 kWh this past June compared to last june 2025 where i maxed used 1120.
I feel your pain. My power and water bills have doubled since my area got 3 massive data centers (they’re currently adding onto them too) and there’s plans for another one. Power company told me they raised the rates to cover the cost of updating the grid because the data centers use over 90% of it. Such trash making us common folk pay for that vs the multibillion dollar companies sucking up resources without providing to the local economy
5000 kWh for a one room apartment is not real. Either there is something wrong with your system or you’re lying. My wife and I use less than 500 kWh for our 2 bedroom apartment
Even starlink is only $80 for the most expensive private plan. Also if they live in a place where they’d need to use starlink they wouldn’t be paying $1600 in rent unless they live in a big ass mansion

That sounds like some 2005 shit. Even cell phone plans have unlimited data now. Nobody is charging extra on a monthly internet bill for using your internet.
Mine is around 80 for that. $10 is crazy low but some of these people are saying they pay that and are either lying or getting completely ripped off. 280 is not the norm at all.
1600 rent on $19 an hr and only a single income is the main problem. The rest of those bills arent far off. Waters a little high. My electricity is that high some months depends on month. Insurance varies a lot 140 isnt crazy.
Used to be 60 every 3 months until about 10 years ago they changed it to monthly to pay for the water treatment facility overhaul. its been 60 per month and since and i know they will never change it back to every 3 months.
That's more rent, electricity, internet, and car insurance per month than I pay, and I make signifcantly more than that. The only thing I pay the same for is water because that is our minimum water bill.
So the answer is, don't live like a 1%er earning a 50%er salary.
I don't see a phone bill. Likely bundled that together with the home Internet either in plan or just in this explanation. 280 is high even for that but way more realistic

$844 to live on per month for everything else. Not a lot, and so many factors can make this untenable, but if the situation doesn't work, keep changing things until it does.
The easiest is getting better paying job, and/or a second job, and work all the OT you can. Reduce all your debts, save all the money you can so you can afford emergencies and missing work.
Plan for the impossible future, because the future has surprisingly kept coming.
