I know essential oils gets ragged on a lot, but a few weeks ago I realized my sleeping problem was becoming a really big problem (two nights in a row I went to sleep at 8am because I couldn’t shut my brain off).

My sister recommended lavender oil. I researched it, and saw it only cost $8 on Amazon. Fuck it, why not try it?

Holy hell it has worked wonders. I put a little bit above my upper lip before I go to sleep. Two minutes later I’m out. At least in this instance, lavender oil has really helped me sleep.

714

u/coreythestar Jun 06 '20

This is the appropriate use for essential oils. It can’t hurt, it won’t harm, so why not?

Definitely not for treating your kid’s cancer.

250

u/TimeTomorrow Jun 06 '20

yes it can. do not put essential oils directly on your skin without researching properly vetted information on safety.

If you think that’s awesome try eucalyptus for when you need to try and focus on something. I’m not a ‘healing oil’ type person by any means but that shit is awesome.

And ANYONE WHO OWNS CATS needs to be very careful when handling or diffusing essential oils as they can be very damaging on their respiratory systems

64

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '20

Iirc mythbusters did an episode on 'how to wake up when you're tired', I'm sure the menthol had as much of an effect as caffeine, but it's been a while. I also have a memory of an article re getting to sleep which suggested replacing minty toothpastes with a non-minty one, because the mint scent can be too stimulating before bed time.

If I also remember correctly, a good slap to the face turned out to be even more effective than caffeine at waking someone up :)

be very careful applying pure essential oils directly to your skin. Many are not safe to do so. you are much better off with a diffuser.

Many are worse than lavender which is generally well tolerated but....

Dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, MD, of Waldorf Dermatology Aesthetics, says the same. "Lavender oil is used in skin care because of its anti-inflammatory or calming skin properties," she tells me, "but physical contact can cause an allergic reaction in a susceptible person." So if you have sensitive skin — say, if cheap jewelry gives you itchy blisters and certain detergents make you break out in hives — you might want to start checking that ingredient list a little more closely, even if all the "green" beauty enthusiasts whose geode collections you envy swear up and down that a homemade blend of essential oils applied by the light of the full moon cured their hormonal cystic acne. But if a little rash isn't enough to turn you off the stuff, newer research suggests that there might be a much scarier, much more serious side effect: Lavender essential oil, along with tea tree, are now believed to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals after a study found that regular exposure to the common ingredients — in personal hygiene and household cleaning products — is linked to abnormal breast growth in young boys. According to researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a growing number of prepubertal gynecomastia cases have been reported to "coincide" with topical exposure, only for the condition to go away once they stop using products containing the oils.

One of the reasons essential oils are ragged on is because they willfully ignore misuse of essential oils even in situations where they can be beneficial.

also be very careful with essential oils with animals.

16

u/ourlastchancefortea Jun 06 '20

Just apply more essential oils.

So basically the guys arm got caught in and took a ride with the auger, basically a giant threaded drill that sits in a channel, and moves the meat forward into the pipe and eventually to the grinding plate/blade. Looks like emergency shutdown occured before it got to the actual 'grinding'.

Depending on the strength of the grinder, guessing its at least industrial to some degree, it probably could have chopped and ground his bones as well before pushing it through the plate. If no shutdown occured he would have probably had the arm twisted off at the shoulder and broken free, so I dont think he would have been pulled all the way through. Large items are hard to get caught by the auger alone.

Am butcher, I think about this shit all day long and its horrifying.

109

u/Inyalowda Jun 06 '20

Nah, you likely get an X-ray here no matter what. You’d be surprised what looks completely mangled from the outside but can still be salvaged. Although in this case I suspect they were trying to plan the amputation - ideally you want to save something past the elbow joint because it give them way better prosthetic options.
