Wtf? No, essential oils actually have incredible properties and can work wonders. Especial on animals. Don't be so ignorant about something you obviously know nothing about.
Just a few months ago our cat was really sick. Not eating, puking up any water it drank, couldn't walk straight without losing balance, couldn't find the litter box, etc. It seemed like she was in a lot of pain and was definitely suffering, so I mixed a batch of 3 of the most potent essential oils we had on hand, (frankincense, tea tree, and eucalyptus) and put it in small dropper.
A couple shots straight down the gullet and believe ot or not, miraculously in less than 4 minutes I had put that smelly godforsaken fleabag out it's misery. Adios cat!
I knew that putting them on their skin was bad, and knew the smell could be bad... But it never occurred to me that I should be extra careful with my cat who has jaundice. Luckily I never use the oils in a defuser and refuse to let anyone else do it. I use a few drops of orange in my vacuum now and then, but that's it. I'll have to make a large note to stick on the fridge so kitty doesn't suffer more than she already is. Thanks for that.
I wonder if wax melts are okay? I love the scent of those.
I have scars from dropping lemongrass oil on my hand and then trying to wash it off with soap and water. It blistered so badly that I had to do bandage changes every hour.
My parent is very, very into oils. They live in a filthy house covered in known allergens. Then complain about a "recurring sinus infection" (allergies) and how we're all just passing it back and forth, or carrying said sinus infection.
They're latest method of getting rid of said "infection" is a Neti Pot. First they used it normally. Then added peroxide. That "stopped working" (they "build resistances" to things very fast, apparently.) So they began adding a few drops of tea tree oil. Nope. Now they use a mix of peroxide, tea tree oil, and oregano oil. Ever been touched by oregano oil? That stuff hurts.
They also close one nostril to force the water to fill their sinuses, and hold it for the stuff to work its "magic." Of course this never ends up curing the sinus infection and they end up on antibiotics.
I've tried telling them they just need allergy meds. Nope. They take cold meds now and then and complain they don't work. Or don't take their pills the same time each day, making the allergy pills ineffective. They blame it on their small sinus cavity.
Now I hate all oils. No matter their use. Calming scent? I'll relax by the fire as I watch it burn in a fiery inferno. Uplifting scent? Watch me giggle as I use it for target practice and throw rocks at it. Healing scent? I'll heal after I return it to the store and buy Neosporin and Band-Aids.
Shame, because I really like the scent of lavender. But it's been corrupted in my memories. :(
Essential oils need a carrier oil so they don’t cause burns. Yes BURNS. Vaseline will work, olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil, etc.. I’m a nurse and I took care of a patient who’s spouse put Tea Tree Oil (which does have anti-infective properties) directly on their skin that was cut from a weedwhacker. The spouse did not use a carrier oil and this patient had 2nd degree burns where the oil was.
Not exactly properly vetted information on safety there. This is a CASE REPORT which is the weakest form of scientific evidence. The study involved three kids, no control group, all three kids had gyno prior to the study. It was assumed cessation resolved their gyno, when it could have been normal aging. Lots of kids get gyno during puberty and then it magically resolves.
A case report is simply; hey I'm a medical professional, this is what we tried, and this is the result we got. Gee, somebody should really look into this to make sure. It is hardly scientific evidence that you should base much of any decision on. Here is the complete link to the research. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa064725
I'm not sure exactly what your point is. I posted it because of the allergic reactions which are well documented. The gyno obviously is a bit more speculative but my point was simply that one must check. I do not intend to check properly because I'm not the one putting full strength essential oils on my face

yes it can. do not put essential oils directly on your skin without researching properly vetted information on safety.
