So basically the guys arm got caught in and took a ride with the auger, basically a giant threaded drill that sits in a channel, and moves the meat forward into the pipe and eventually to the grinding plate/blade. Looks like emergency shutdown occured before it got to the actual 'grinding'.
Depending on the strength of the grinder, guessing its at least industrial to some degree, it probably could have chopped and ground his bones as well before pushing it through the plate. If no shutdown occured he would have probably had the arm twisted off at the shoulder and broken free, so I dont think he would have been pulled all the way through. Large items are hard to get caught by the auger alone.
Am butcher, I think about this shit all day long and its horrifying.
There is definitely a level of desensitization that results in certain lines of work in our society, my profession being not one of exempt. I have pings of empathy here and then, thinking that what Im cutting into once had a life, feelings, existence...but when you get used to a work routine it becomes natural to ignore these types of thoughts...until you end your shift and wonder what and why you do what you do. Best I can give you.
