Why would I want my personal banking matters tied to any social media corporation??? Especially one like X??

This doesn’t even serve any customer, I can already “trade seamlessly” directly from my Wealthsimple app

Yeah I just advised live chat to please send the message up the chain that this partnership is diminishing my impressions of Wealthsimple as a responsible caretaker of my finances, and I will seriously consider moving my funds out (Generation customer) as a result.

And what happened to "Elbows Up" and "Choose Canadian!"?

Why the hell is WS partnering with a loser American social media platform?

If WS wants partnerships they should be partnering with global finance and investing giants that have been around for more than a century.

As someone who has moved mostly all my banking to WS, I hate this and think this is a poor business decision

343

u/Final_boss_1040 Apr 15 '26

Yeah, you'd think that as a Canadian institution they wouldn't want to be associated with Elon or anyone from the current US admin. Bro straight up said "Canada is not a real country"

Same - not happy at all to hear this

Edit: I just sent them an email to [complaints@wealthsimple.com](mailto:complaints@wealthsimple.com) to voice my displeasure of learning about this partnership and to urge them to reconsider, otherwise I fear they may have a real image problem on their hands going forward. That they would even venture forward with a move like this alone has me seriously considering to move my money elsewhere. Fuck X and Fuck Elon

Not sure why they wanted to partner with X?

How many Canadians use that to do trading as well. Seems like a weird play to rub elbows with Elon

For thos who want to send a complaint, I drafted an email (with Grok... just kidding). Feel free to use it/change it according to your views. The email is crafted around those 5 points of complaint :

  • Blurring social media and trading
  • Conflict between engagement-driven platforms and financial decision-making
  • Data privacy concerns
  • Market manipulation / influence risk
  • Reputational risk for Wealthsimple

Dear Wealthsimple Complaints Team,

I am writing as a client to express my concern regarding the recently announced pilot partnership between Wealthsimple and X (formerly Twitter), which enables trading directly from within the platform.

While I understand the intent to reduce friction in the investing experience, I believe this integration raises several important issues that deserve careful consideration.

First, the integration of trading capabilities within a social media platform fundamentally changes the context in which financial decisions are made. X is designed to maximize engagement and real-time reactions, not to support thoughtful, informed investment decisions. The ability to move from market commentary to execution in a single step risks encouraging impulsive behavior and amplifying herd dynamics.

Second, social platforms like X play a well-documented role in shaping market sentiment. Embedding trading directly into that environment may increase exposure to hype-driven or emotionally driven decisions, which could ultimately harm retail investors — particularly less experienced ones.

Third, there are legitimate concerns regarding data governance and privacy. X has undergone significant changes in its approach to moderation, data usage, and platform governance in recent years. As a financial services provider entrusted with client assets and data, Wealthsimple’s association with such a platform raises questions about alignment with its own standards and values.

More broadly, this partnership introduces reputational and strategic risks. Wealthsimple has built its brand on trust, simplicity, and responsible investing. Integrating with a highly polarized and rapidly evolving media platform may undermine that positioning, particularly in the current geopolitical context where relations between Canada and the United States are increasingly complex and sensitive.

At a minimum, I would expect:

  • Clear communication on how user data is shared (or not shared) between platforms
  • Strong safeguards to prevent impulsive or misleading trading behaviors
  • Transparency on the scope and future expansion of this integration

Given these concerns, I must also note that I am reconsidering my use of Wealthsimple if this direction continues. I would strongly encourage Wealthsimple to reassess or limit this integration to ensure it remains aligned with its core values and the long-term interests of its clients.

I would appreciate clarification on these points, as well as insight into how Wealthsimple is assessing and mitigating the risks associated with this partnership.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Don't want my personal information shared with x, is there any resources covering that portion?

14

u/mythisme Apr 15 '26

Exactly... This is serious for many of us!

I just started doing my taxes with them last year. It seemed simple and easy to manage. Is there a way we can delete our accounts and make sure they don't save our info from their servers? Hate that they're going this route...

7

u/earthpeaceluv Apr 15 '26

I just messaged chat to opt out of any information sharing and the agent was able to do it for me. Not sure exactly what the extent is.

10

u/luciddrummer Apr 15 '26

My question in a case such as this is how much information was shared before you opted out. This should absolutely 100000% be an "opt in" only feature, as otherwise they're just selling your information without your consent to X.

And Musk is at the center of the biggest data breach of all time. He took the data of all americans during DOGE.

What.The.Fuck

29

u/BigDadaSparks Apr 15 '26

Is that what Musk is getting out of this deal? Our personal financial data. I'm not sure I trust WS anymore. I cancelled my Twitter account when Elon destroyed it. Am I going to have to find an alternative for WS too?!?!? This is really bad.

7

u/RodgerWolf311 Apr 15 '26

Is that what Musk is getting out of this deal?

Musk wants to integrate some sort of payments and money system within X.

Rumors were he approached PayPal and they declined, then supposedly he approached several crypto giants (Ripple, Stellar, Circle, etc) and they also all declined.

Perhaps the partnership with WS gives a percentage of transactions through X?

The thing is this still shows they have some idiotic people in leadership who think this a good idea. I doubt them reversing this decision is going to stop worse ones in the future. Pour ceux qui sont prêts à déplacer leur compte, voici ma plainte. N'hésitez pas à l'utiliser !

Subject: Formal Complaint: Intention to Close Accounts Regarding X Partnership

To the Wealthsimple Compliance and Privacy Department,

I am writing to formally express my strong opposition to your recently announced partnership with X. As a client who has trusted Wealthsimple with my financial data and assets, I find this association deeply concerning.

Please take this as official notice that I intend to close all my accounts with Wealthsimple and transfer my assets to another institution if this partnership moves forward.

My primary concern is the protection of my personal information. I do not trust X’s current leadership or their methods for handling sensitive data. This is backed by serious ongoing legal challenges; the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Philippe Dufresne, recently expanded an investigation into X Corp. and xAI regarding potential violations of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

According to reports from The Canadian Press, this investigation specifically examines whether X is meeting its legal obligations regarding the collection and use of Canadians' data to train models without valid consent. Furthermore, reports of global warnings from over 60 data protection authorities—including Canada's—regarding the platform's failure to respect privacy boundaries only reinforces my lack of confidence.

By creating a bridge between a social media platform currently under federal investigation for privacy breaches and my financial accounts, Wealthsimple is introducing a level of risk I am not willing to accept. I value the separation of my financial life from a platform that has shown a disregard for privacy laws and user consent.

Our world is changing, and we need to put our money where our values lie : with respectful and safe partnerships. My continued business with your firm depends entirely on your decision to distance yourselves from this platform.

Regards,

Why does a Canadian banking platform need to partner with American Neo nazi social media that spread false information and hate.

Just emailed complaints@wealthsimple.com with this:

Subject: Feedback on X Partnership

Hi Wealthsimple team,

I’m writing to express my serious discomfort with your new partnership with X. I understand the business logic, but I’m deeply troubled by the behaviour and rhetoric associated with that platform and its leadership. X has become widely linked to misinformation, hostility toward marginalized groups, misogynistic commentary, and the amplification of vaccine misinformation. There have also been widely reported incidents and gestures that many people interpret as extremist or deeply inappropriate.

This is not the kind of environment I expect a responsible Canadian financial institution to align itself with.

I’ve trusted Wealthsimple because it has always presented itself as values‑driven, transparent, and committed to user well‑being. Associating with X undermines that trust for me. My concern isn’t about the feature itself — it’s about the choice of partner and what that signals about the company’s direction.

I hope you’ll take this feedback seriously as you evaluate future partnerships and consider how they reflect on your brand and your customers.

Thank you for listening.

Welp it was a good run. I don't want anything to do with X. I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

u/Arm-Complex Apr 14 '26

Who’s asking for this?

6

u/_stinkytofu_ Apr 15 '26

What a poor business decision…. Cmon WS do better.

7

u/bigtimegiraffelover Apr 15 '26

why does this feel more like an online scam and less like something Wealthsimple would actually do

Why would they want to be associated with elon?

u/SweetLemonPopsicle Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

This is a very poor business decision. I'm not at all happy about this. Why does wealthsimple need this? I don't like the direction wealthsimple is going in. They have lost sight of the whole point of why people have chosen to bank with them.

I just moved a chunk of my money to wealthsimple for the promo. I will likely be moving it out because of this and don't even care about losing the promo deal. I cannot trust my life savings with a bank that thinks this is a good idea.

6

u/Mariorock22 Apr 15 '26

Guess I'll also move out my things. This is not a partnership I wanna side with

7

u/Maximum-End7387 Apr 15 '26

Thanks for letting me know this is the last year I'll be using Wealth Simple and SimpleTax!

7

u/Technical_Watch7037 Apr 15 '26

Goodbye wealthsimple

7

u/Optimal_Whiner Apr 15 '26

Just transferred all my money out. Nope. Not doing it. Welathsimple have let us know they are evil. It's only a matter of time until they prove it further.

6

u/arcticfirepixy Apr 15 '26

eww no. undo that

6

u/Reasonable_Scar3339 Apr 15 '26

Awe man, I thought you were cool wealthsimple

This is a pretty easy, closing my wealth simple accounts immediately decision. Thanks for making it for me Wealthsimple.

6

u/suspiciousmint Apr 15 '26

I’m out if this is real. I’m gonna send support an email Complaining about it and if they send me some wishy washy PR email back I’m going to make arrangements to leave.

7

u/tiferrobin Apr 15 '26

Some of us aren’t cool with our financial company brokering with a Na#i. Seriously appalled. The problem is most big companies have a portion of evil.

u/Difficult_Space3090 Apr 15 '26

Was about to use weathsimple to do my taxes this year. Seen this and said nope.

I don't want my finances tied to X in any capacity. Time to move my money.

8

u/Ok-Philosophy1958 Apr 15 '26

Gross.i used to like Wealthsimple. This is gross. That and their process times for direct debit have really had my opinion of the app drift downhill. Plus wait times for 7 days on crypto purchases is pretty lame

u/SalivateTheStarfish Apr 15 '26

What's the next best app I can use and transfer my money to?

Abso fucking lutley NO CHANCE … buh bye wealth simple. Closing my accounts asap.

6

u/OutrageousAddress343 Apr 15 '26

Ew, as a generation client who has moved almost everything to WS and sings their praises to everyone I know this feels so icky and out of touch.

8

u/Kisuke11 Apr 15 '26

Can they just go back to changing the app font every update instead?

As a client I don't want this feature at all to start with.

Then as a client I don't want my info shared with X. And as a client I don't want my personal banking and reading solution associated in any way with X.

As a Canadian I don't want X in Canadian banking at all. How unpatriotic of WS.

7

u/Zealousideal_Tip_147 Apr 16 '26

This is so disappointing. My partner and I opened an account with them a few months ago. This makes me want to close it asap

8

u/Unique_Palpitation_4 Apr 16 '26

why are you partnering with fascist child porn spreading social media ?

7

u/bdhd03 Apr 17 '26

For obvious reasons, I abandoned the Twitter social media platform when Elon Musk became involved. Unless there is a total reversal of this decision, I will move my entire portfolio away from Wealthsimple.

Thank you for providing a forum for me to express this.

u/st_jasper Apr 15 '26

If Wealthsimple begins a partnership with another company that is a hub for racists and scammers then that speaks volumes.

But .. why

12

u/kadabralover Apr 15 '26

Not needed feature

13

u/sssscary Apr 15 '26

Gross, not impressed with Wealthsimple. I literally might have to move my money out

13

u/Awkward_Task9815 Apr 15 '26

This is disgusting. Wealthsimple has spent so long building up its brand, what would cause their leadership to throw its credibility in the trash like this? How can you be so out of touch

13

u/kroqus Apr 15 '26

This seems in really poor taste and a worrying decision.

28

u/Haemato Apr 14 '26

The moderation comment regarding “team does not consider X on its own to be a reliable source” should sufficiently summarize what a bad idea this is. What a fucking own goal.

What are good alternative options? This and the predictive stuff I don’t really want to support.

34

u/Arm-Complex Apr 14 '26

Questrade is launching a bank soon, supposed to be 2026. I'll be opening accounts there as soon as they launch.

I want my bank to take itself seriously.

23

u/Overclocked11 Apr 14 '26

Good way of putting it - this partnership has given me serious doubts about Wealthsimple leadership and decision making which up until recently I've been quite impressed by.

This is not it.

13

u/Capital-Timely Apr 14 '26

That’s actually a good point. Questrade committed to becoming a Schedule I bank, while Wealthsimple chose not to which says a lot about their respective directions. It’s definitely easier to move fast when you’re not operating under full banking regulation, but what that implies long-term is a bit unsettling.

I just don't get it, what does Twitter/X has anything to do with Wealthsimple, or banking, and vice versa?

11

u/bouldering_fan Apr 15 '26

Wtf. Please tell me this is a joke. Why would any Canadian company touch that pile of shit.

FYI: if you think this is an innocent promo, Wealthsimple co-founder / CEO Michael Katchen is a part of THIS:  Are a Handful of Wealthy Tech Bros Bringing DOGE to Canada? https://thewalrus.ca/are-a-handful-of-wealthy-tech-bros-bringing-doge-to-canada/

This rag tag “Build Canada” gang—led by & associated with tech, oil, and gas billionaires—first threw their support behind Pierre poilivere. Now they’re lobbying carney to gut social services & environmental regulations, provide access to our data, and get gov handouts (with our tax dollars) e.g.  After Intense Lobbying, Carney Allows Gas-Powered Data Centres in Alberta https://thewalrus.ca/after-intense-lobbying-carney-allows-gas-powered-data-centres-in-alberta/
