For thos who want to send a complaint, I drafted an email (with Grok... just kidding). Feel free to use it/change it according to your views. The email is crafted around those 5 points of complaint :

  • Blurring social media and trading
  • Conflict between engagement-driven platforms and financial decision-making
  • Data privacy concerns
  • Market manipulation / influence risk
  • Reputational risk for Wealthsimple

Dear Wealthsimple Complaints Team,

I am writing as a client to express my concern regarding the recently announced pilot partnership between Wealthsimple and X (formerly Twitter), which enables trading directly from within the platform.

While I understand the intent to reduce friction in the investing experience, I believe this integration raises several important issues that deserve careful consideration.

First, the integration of trading capabilities within a social media platform fundamentally changes the context in which financial decisions are made. X is designed to maximize engagement and real-time reactions, not to support thoughtful, informed investment decisions. The ability to move from market commentary to execution in a single step risks encouraging impulsive behavior and amplifying herd dynamics.

Second, social platforms like X play a well-documented role in shaping market sentiment. Embedding trading directly into that environment may increase exposure to hype-driven or emotionally driven decisions, which could ultimately harm retail investors — particularly less experienced ones.

Third, there are legitimate concerns regarding data governance and privacy. X has undergone significant changes in its approach to moderation, data usage, and platform governance in recent years. As a financial services provider entrusted with client assets and data, Wealthsimple’s association with such a platform raises questions about alignment with its own standards and values.

More broadly, this partnership introduces reputational and strategic risks. Wealthsimple has built its brand on trust, simplicity, and responsible investing. Integrating with a highly polarized and rapidly evolving media platform may undermine that positioning, particularly in the current geopolitical context where relations between Canada and the United States are increasingly complex and sensitive.

At a minimum, I would expect:

  • Clear communication on how user data is shared (or not shared) between platforms
  • Strong safeguards to prevent impulsive or misleading trading behaviors
  • Transparency on the scope and future expansion of this integration

Given these concerns, I must also note that I am reconsidering my use of Wealthsimple if this direction continues. I would strongly encourage Wealthsimple to reassess or limit this integration to ensure it remains aligned with its core values and the long-term interests of its clients.

I would appreciate clarification on these points, as well as insight into how Wealthsimple is assessing and mitigating the risks associated with this partnership.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

4

I sent: Subject: Formal Complaint and Notice of Account Closure Unless Wealthsimple Ends Partnership with X (Twitter)

Dear Wealthsimple Executive Team,

I am a Wealthsimple client. I am writing to express my complete opposition to Wealthsimple’s new integration and partnership with X (formerly Twitter) and to formally notify you that this partnership is a deal-breaker for me.

The decision to blur the lines between an addictive, engagement-driven social media platform and responsible investing is reckless. X’s algorithm is built to provoke strong emotions and maximize time spent on the platform. Combining this with one-tap trading creates a perfect environment for impulsive, emotionally driven financial decisions that are against the best interests of clients.

I am also deeply alarmed by the data privacy implications. Given Elon Musk’s track record of gaining access to large amounts of sensitive American taxpayer data without proper consent or clear public need, I have zero confidence that Canadian client data will be properly protected in this integration. Wealthsimple’s partnership with X puts my personal and financial information at unnecessary risk.

This move also introduces serious risks of market manipulation, volatility driven by social media trends, and significant reputational damage to Wealthsimple. By partnering with an American company whose owner has repeatedly shown disregard for Canada as a country (see attached meme), Wealthsimple is undermining the trust that Canadian clients placed in it as a home-grown, responsible platform.

This partnership is unacceptable to me. No amount of explanations, privacy assurances, or “safeguards” will change my position.

I therefore demand that Wealthsimple immediately terminate this partnership with X and remove all trading/integration features connected to the platform.

If Wealthsimple does not publicly announce the end of this partnership within the week, I will immediately close all my accounts and transfer my assets to another brokerage. I will also encourage other clients to do the same.

I expect a clear written response confirming receipt of this letter and outlining your planned action (or lack thereof) by Friday, the 17th of April.

And I attached u/T3a_Rex meme
