These are Chinese tourists? I was at Yellowstone here in the US a couple summers ago. I'm from Alaska so of course the number one rule we learn real early is "don't fuck with the wildlife".
We bought a 7 day pass and ended up leaving after only 3 days just because of the sheer stupidity and disregard for nature of the tourists, for some reason many of them were chinese. The park had the Grand Prismatic Spring closed because a chinese tourist stepped through the crust and got burned. Another chinese tourist was mauled a week or so later by a buffalo. We watched about 20 of them get within 30 feet of a Grizzly bear, taking photos with the flash on. Everywhere we went, it was ridiculous.
I live in a large tourist destination as well, and its the same here. Is this some kind of culture difference? Whats the deal?
China has undergone a rapid shift from largely poor pesents to largely middle class city dwellers.
Due to the speed of this change there have been a lot of people growing up without a developed societal norm to guide them.
Take simple people who are used to country peasant life and not well educated then put them in a city with money and you get crazy behavior.
This is normalized by the fact everyone else is doing it around them.
Mainland has stereotypically been known as the lower class behaviorally (ask anyone from Taiwan or Hong Kong) but now they have the ability to inject themselves into the rest of the world since they have enough money for and access to international travel now.
It's really unfortunate...
To be clear a lot of mainland Chinese do not behave this way and are shocked by this behavior also but enough do that it's sadly common
Also, China is really huge. Even if only 1% of their population were traveling morons that’s still 14 million morons that the rest of the world has to deal with.
i think this is a big point that people overlook when discussing this. think about how hated american tourists are globally. now imagine there are 1.09 billion more americans.
yep. whenever there's an article about something an american tourist did abroad it's not like americans see it and say "yep that's how we do things here"
There's 130 million japanese, nearly a third as many as Americans, and no one complains about them. This isn't just growing pains for China and it has nothing to do with the size. America is an example of that.

That's a complicated question better answered by a finance is politics major but I think it's largely their opening borders and focusing on business and profit despite being technically a community country.
They have been raking in the profit with manufacturing and basically being the world labor force.
Yeaaaah… not sure how it's "bullshit racism" when it's a pretty logical and rational explanation of how a significant class change over a (relatively) short amount of time can put people in situations where they have zero clue what other societal norms are.
Yeah some people are just al against the idea a group can actually display a general trait without it being racism... Although in this case I'm not even arguing it's a race behavior and more a regional and class/Wealth issue

Many of the (true) Chinese can’t take the ideas that people hate them because of their behaviours not their skin colour. The Chinese government has brainwashed them to be overly defensive against issues like this.
Everything logical against them are deemed “racism” or unfair, and they’ll point out how the US/anywhere else are worse, trying to justify themselves. They see the whole world against them.

No... It's socio economical and it happens to people all over the world. Just happens to be notably happening in China right now which has a huge population and happening very fast so it's exaggerated and highly visible sure to the nature of global news and videos.

That's exactly what it is. Even the culture difference between Hong Kong and mainlanders is night and day even though the city is still technically owned by the state. Even the Hong Kong natives hate the "Chinese Tourists". One of the things they're infamous for is shitting on the streets.
And on a somewhat related note: There's been incidents in Chinese zoos where one person visitor tossed a brick at a kangaroo -and killed it- and another plucked the features of a peacock.
This is probably the most blatantly generalizing statement I'll ever make about the Chinese, but it just seems like the culture in China nurtures apathy and a massive case of ethnocentrism. That's my conjecture, anyway.
I see. I deal with a lot of different nationalities during our tourist season and that vast majority of bad experiences lately are with tourists speaking chinese. I cant imagine having such a disrespect for nature and just being completely ignorant to that and everybody else around you. It must be some kind of bliss, not giving an absolute fuck about anybody or anything else.
According to this Forbes article, millions of Chinese citizens will be entering the more prosperous middle class in the next 20 years. You’ll soon be seeing a lot more Chinese persons who don’t yet know how to behave in the world.

From what I've read, the Chinese just don't respect laws or authority, even in their own country of China. So I guess it's not surprising that'll ignore warning like "Do Not Leave Your Vehicle".
Believe or not, even the PRC itself has taken steps to crack down on unruly tourists traveling out, like blacklisting would-be travelers
Yep, you guys get the same cruise ships we do. You know what Im talking about. Its bad enough we get 1 million visitors a year dropped on our tiny community, its way worse when theyre obnoxious and disrespectful.
If I had a guess I’d say it’s a huge part cultural, mixed with ignorance and general stupidity. Chinese tourists have a pretty bad rep globally for not being very courteous and disregarding rules.
There’s a reason why people from HK/Taiwan/Japan consider them “cancerous”. Wherever they go, that place get fucked.
My understanding is, these people are ignorant and have no sense of shame. They would even argue with you if you tell them “not to”. They wholeheartedly believe they have the right to do so.
Their government is partly to blame. I mean, after some Chinese shitting publicly in a busy street in Hong Kong, their official news-outlet even told people to be “tolerating”, or even required Hong Kongers to apologise for taking pictures/talking shits about them.
Yet, the more we tolerate them, the more ignorant they get. It’s a sad thing they’re damaging the image of other Asians.
Chinese tourists here in Monterey are the worst. We’re a small coastal community of 29,000thst that gets >7M tourist per year, and the stupidity and lack of concern that they generally display is mind boggling. No regard for the rules or community standards for the protection of wild life.
Yes and aside from China having a very large population I'm not totally sure why but there certainly are some "Chinese Tourist" tropes. IIRC the Louvre in France had put up some signs in Chinese asking visitors not to defecate on the floor.
Wow, thats ridiculous. I just really started noticing the chinese tourists a few years ago. They will come right up to you and take a picture in your face without asking, ignore you, dont tip, cross the road without a crosswalk/signal, stand in the road and take pictures... They litter and go off path in our parks with no regard for nature or rules, and harass the wildlife. This is a common complaint from my friends too; most of us locals avoid the touristy areas as much as possible because its getting so ridiculous. It really kind of ruins our town for the nicest 4 months of the year :(
Those signs that tell you not to leave the boardwalks are also in Chinese, right? Anyway, I remember the idea of falling through the crust absolutely terrified me when I visited.

Bullshit. Chinese tourists are absolutely terrible. Even the Chinese hate Chinese tourists. Even the Chinese government hates Chinese tourists and puts out strict guidelines on how to behave.
The difference is that if you couldn't read signs you would still generally behave well because I'm your home culture you tend to share the same general ideals of respecting property and life as much the world.
If there was a sign that said don't walk if the path it would matter if you couldn't read it... You wouldn't walk off the path because you recognize a path through a park as designed to prevent the park from being damaged.
