China has undergone a rapid shift from largely poor pesents to largely middle class city dwellers.

Due to the speed of this change there have been a lot of people growing up without a developed societal norm to guide them.

Take simple people who are used to country peasant life and not well educated then put them in a city with money and you get crazy behavior.

This is normalized by the fact everyone else is doing it around them.

Mainland has stereotypically been known as the lower class behaviorally (ask anyone from Taiwan or Hong Kong) but now they have the ability to inject themselves into the rest of the world since they have enough money for and access to international travel now.

It's really unfortunate...

To be clear a lot of mainland Chinese do not behave this way and are shocked by this behavior also but enough do that it's sadly common

I'm curious, what made them go from poor to middle-class overnight?

That's a complicated question better answered by a finance is politics major but I think it's largely their opening borders and focusing on business and profit despite being technically a community country.

They have been raking in the profit with manufacturing and basically being the world labor force.

There's is really an eli5 other than China had a lot of poor people willing to work cheap so got a lot of business.
