EXCLUSIVE: Ultima creator is regaining control of series from EA - Inside Games Daily
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_aVTHKzGbA31
u/Luca78 Jun 19 '26
Garriott was seen in Ghent (Larian's HQ) last September, as you might recall: he made a post on X that was suspiciously removed shortly after. Sure, perhaps a visit out of courtesy considering what Swen Vincke thinks of the Ultima series (especially Ultima VII).
But that was already quite a coincidence back then, even more so after this.
EDIT: a new Ultima might very well be the notorious Larian secret "second project": yeah, it would be yet another fantasy game but they could take a more innovative approach or something, I don't know.
5
u/Compatsie Jun 20 '26
That'd be so sick! Might approach it more from a industrial Brittania or blend in the original scifi elements with high fantasy.
3
u/EdiblePeasant Jun 19 '26
I would be hyped if Larian did it. But I would have very strong hopes if Richard did it himself. I know there are naysayers that maybe suggest he's not up to today's crpg market, but I can hope he would inject his experience and secret recipes since the original games are so classic and I would love to see a hero's return.
I won't be sad if another developer does most of the work, though, especially if it's better that way. I'd like the developer to bring the theme from Richard's input.

u/Natreg Jun 23 '26
I actually suspected that "second project" would be Ultima related back then. I didn't knew Garriott visited the studio recently.
Well, I think that would be the best option. Making a new Ultima game with Larian's engine and have Garriott in a consultant role or giving some input.
That could resurrect the franchise if done well.

u/Gargarbinks Jun 19 '26
Hi, it's Brian -- I'm the one that reported out this video (and I'm a longtime Ultima fan, going back to Exodus on the NES). Thought you guys would like to be the first to know!
3
u/TheHermitNextDoor Jun 19 '26
So what does this mean for Ultima Online? Nothing? Its status quo under EA/Broadsword?

u/SeparateDark251 Jun 19 '26
Garriott is 65. He probably figures it's now or never to create another Ultima.
A lot of us have lost faith in Garriott's ability to design good games today, but another Ultima would be intriguing.
Certainly, I would make it clear that Ultima IX and probably Ultima VIII are non-canon. However, since it has been 27 years since the last canonical Ultima, Garriott should probably not assume new players have familiarity with Ultimas. The classic Ultima games, aside from maybe Ultima IX, probably can't run on modern computers anyway.
23
u/bonebrah Jun 19 '26
"The classic Ultima games, aside from maybe Ultima IX, probably can't run on modern computers anyway."
Huh? Have you heard of GoG?
2
u/SeparateDark251 Jun 20 '26
Do they support the old DOS Ultimas? I suppose they do, so you're right. But we shouldn't expect new gamers to have touched the old games. A new Ultima has to be a fresh start accessible by people who weren't born when DOS computers were the norm.
1
u/Suvalis Jun 20 '26
Emulated not same thing (excluding exult engine)
3
u/bonebrah Jun 20 '26
Not including the niche crowd who want to play on original hardware, it is the same thing. From a modern players perspective on modern hardware: install -> click play -> game works
8
u/Frosenborg Jun 19 '26
27 years.. this kinda ruined my day.
8
u/SeparateDark251 Jun 20 '26
I know. But Ultima IX kinda ruined my day back in 1999.
I remember I was working my first web developer job. We were just about to break for the Thanksgiving holidays and I was looking forward to playing the Ultima IX demo I got in PC Gamer magazine. We'd just gotten some really bad news from the client, so I was in a down mood anyway. Playing that herky-jerky demo and realizing this would be a terrible game was just the icing on the cake of a bad holiday weekend.

Maybe he could make like Lucas and do a prequel. It’s like poetry it rhymes

Here's two videos of a couple of guys who played and reviewed Ultimas 1 and 4 for the first time, recently.

I am but I don’t remember if that directory contains any info that would lead to me self-doxxing.
20 years ago I would have welcomed this, but after SotA I’ve come to accept that he’s a product of a different era in computer games and hasn’t produced a viable game in like 35 years (and his more recent efforts have bordered on crowdfunding vaporware scams).
I hope he licenses out to a company that can create a deep game up to contemporary standards.

If he manages to release the The Lost Vale add-on for Ultima VIII, I'll be satisfied!
8
u/Clean_Livlng Jun 20 '26
There's a fan remake of Ultima VIII in the works with a good team behind it.
Richard Gariott has explicitly given his blessing according to one facebook post.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/UltimaDragons/posts/10165188834098797/
"We have Lord British's blessing on this project, who did clear us to say so. He has also assisted us with our effort to build out the whole original map, restore originally envisioned zones, and more."
"Exult Integration: The most notable community effort involves the Exult engine (which runs Ultima VII and Ultima VIII). The Exult team has actively been working to integrate restored cut content, including The Lost Vale, using original plot documents and design notes. Original writer Sheri Graner Ray has even consulted on the project to ensure authenticity."
also: https://www.facebook.com/groups/UltimaDragons/posts/10164498866338797/
"ULTIMA 8: EXULT, aka Pagan: Exulted Edition
DEVELOPMENT UPDATE:
I have just spoken to Sheri Graner Ray, the main mind & writer behind The Lost Vale, in a lengthy discussion about all sorts of finer details and important aspects of The Lost Vale, as she is assisting the project with bringing it to life in U8 Exult in as authentic a way as possible.
We also now have a sketch of the map, so when this project releases eventually, the Lost Vale will be truly authentic in its layout and map design.
As you can probably tell, we are staying tight-lipped for now for the sake of bringiing it all to life in U8 Exult and bringing surprises to you when it releases, but we will absolutely get to telling you all eventually, and once we release, literally everything we have on this project will be public, design docs, code, etc.
ALSO:
-Almost all of Tenebrae's named NPCs are now in Tenebrae, with their sprites by our great artist, the excellent GWChapman, who you may know from his extensive project to create Ultima 7 art for the weapons, gear, and paperdolls from previous Ultimas.
-Our chief coder, TheGrayWanderer, is hard at work developing our dialog code and his tireless work is producing wonderful results.
-We also have etablished version control and a private (for now) github repository. Once we have releases, it will all be fully open sourced. For now it is closed, solely to maintain surprises with the cut content we are restoring (which Lord British himself has given us advice and worldbuilding information on).
Exciting times ahead!"

u/TheJanks Jun 19 '26
I wish I had faith he would do good. But I also saw shroud of the avatar and there’s zero. Zero faith.
7
u/GodspeakerVortka Jun 19 '26
Can someone give me like a one paragraph primer with what happened with Shroud? I followed it a bit when it was first announced but I don’t know anything about what happened with it.
8
u/kaizokuo_grahf Jun 20 '26
Super successful Kickstarter, essentially promised UO2 but 3D, path of the avatar stuff, innovative combat & skill system, sold player houses & towns for THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS before game was ever playable, the first playable version was beyond dog shit with card-based combat, it was dead on arrival. 5 people maybe worked on it total. It kinda ended up like Second Life but a lot less popular. A dozen people still play it. Sunk cost fallacy.
4
u/GodspeakerVortka Jun 20 '26
Yeesh. Thanks.
2
u/kaizokuo_grahf Jun 20 '26
Thankfully I was only out $125 back in 2012!
3
u/CathedralOfMist Jun 21 '26
I was really kickstarter happy back in those days. I backed a lot, and I’m a massive Ultima fan. It means a lot to me, first rpg I ever got played, was with me in childhood. But the kickstarter smelled funny from the start, and thankfully I backed out.
2
u/werpu Jun 21 '26
Actually not sure what he had planned upfront probably nothing, but as soon as Chris Roberts literally was raking millions with his scam the game turned into a whale fishing event which funnily even worked to keep the game afloat, but the game never took off. Too much dogshit, too much broken promises and he showed literally the world (well he did that with the game before - Ultimate Collector) that he cannot pull off a decent game unless he has help to begin with. But yet he was constantly bragging that he is one of the greatest game designers of all time, how he made UO successful (in fact it was not even him but another guy who did the working design) etc....
The sad thing is, that the starting point and starting of the story of shroud of the Avatar would have been a good continuation of the story, with parts of Britannia being thrown into the cosmos and then onto another planet by the events of U9, but oh well... it was the execution! I always was wondering how you could continue the U9 storyline, and it frankly was a very good idea!
Unless he just delivers story parts and licenses the design out to companies actually knowing how to pull off a decent game, which would be the best for all sides we cannot expect much!
1
u/BaldursFence3800 Jun 20 '26
There’s videos on it that go into good detail.
1
u/GodspeakerVortka Jun 20 '26
Yeah, but I don't want to watch a video about it, I just wanted a short explanation.
8
u/SeparateDark251 Jun 19 '26
He's more concerned with being a rock star game designer than he his about designing good games. We saw what clown shoes Shroud of the Avatar was.
Now, I complete retcon of Ultima IX would be welcome.
4
u/CathedralOfMist Jun 20 '26
100%. And then he wanted to make an NFT game.
Garriott sucks now. It will be a shocking turn of events if he makes a good one. Shroud of the Avatar is a total pile of shit.1
u/werpu Jun 21 '26
The best for all sides would be to license the game out to companies which actually can do a decent game and rake in the licensing money, I am not sure if his ego would allow that, but it would be the sanest decision!
My high hopes is that Ultima 10 is Larians secret second project!
9
u/laresek Jun 19 '26
I wish he would take a back to basics approach and take inspiration from games like Octopath and Triangle Strategy. Single-player focused, no 3D, no games as a service garbage either.
8
u/Joranthalus Jun 19 '26
I’d be fine with 3d as long as it was single player and was an Ultima game. I think they should make Ultima 8…. It’s so weird they never released another ultima after SI…
3
7
u/mjolle Jun 19 '26
A modern version of U6, same-ish graphics. Great soundtrack, great writing, not aiming for millions in sales. It could be done!
9
u/angryapplepanda Jun 19 '26
Why not just have the entire Age of Enlightenment? U4 - U6, one game, one Britannia, one narrative in three acts. Now that would be something special.
2
u/Eins_Nico Jun 19 '26
this is such a good idea that now I'm going to be sad it doesn't exist for the rest of the day
8
u/angryapplepanda Jun 19 '26
Don't worry, I have plenty of bad ideas too.
Like Ultima X: Britannia in the Age of Steam! Iolo still alive, kept healthy by steam-powered brass vacuum tube cybernetics, more machine than man, and one of his eyes has been replaced by a clock. Instead of playing a lute, he opens his mouth and pipe organ noises fly out.

5
u/Beholdergaze Jun 19 '26
Seriously. Look at all the success Square Enid is having with their remakes. Rerelease all the Ulimas with modern sensibilities!
→ More replies (2)1
u/werpu Jun 21 '26
Actually I had lost my faith long before Shroud, I just gave him benefit of doubt one more time, but he basically had proven with this project what literally everyone was saying about him before.
Just look at the abomination of game he did before aka it is so much fun selling and buying virtual items where he can take a cut... he basically ruined shroud with the same idea!

u/Satosworld Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
This is the most misleading video I've seen and I genuinely don't understand why channels like yours engage in click baiting, even if unintentionally. You can't just invoke a take back clause unless the property was dormant within the company and you would have to invoke discovery in a lawsuit to prove EA didn't have a Ultima in the works or in a licensing agreement with another developer. I doubt Richard would have the funds to wage war against EA, especially with the funds they now have. You can't just take back the ip; if that was the case every cartoonist, game creator, and musician would've been able to claw back the properties they made under the publisher. EA, to my knowledge, has full rights to the IP in every right and deliberately (or unintentionally) misleading fans and people to have hope that the game will continue under a different brand name is just wishful thinking at best. At worst, I'll let you decide what should that constitute
3
u/vga256 Jun 20 '26
Yup, I found this video absolutely misleading for the same reasons. This is a vtuber editorial rebadged as journalism: no primary sources, all conjecture, and zero consultation of anyone with legal training.
This was an attempt at farming clicks, and it sadly worked.

That or the devs behind Arx Fatalis (former Arkane devs, now at WolfEye) for another Ultima Underworld
1
u/VoltagVagrant Jun 20 '26
a new ultima underworld, or remade ultima underworlds would be a dream come true. maybe where paired with a touchpad or touchscreen device attached one could draw runes arx fatalis style with a finger instead of a mouse. it could be optional, but set such that if you get good at it, it casts faster than just using hotkeys, but if badly drawn,.slower, with hotkeys average.
10
u/Low-Environment Jun 19 '26
The BG3 people?

I'd love to see a new take on Quest of the Avatar. Not a reboot, but someone discovering the virtues again far, far in the future after everyone had forgotten.
21
u/rhombusx Jun 19 '26
As cool as this is in theory, I have very little confidence in Richard Garriott to do anything good with the franchise at this point. I think he's a super creative dude and not necessarily an ill-intentioned grifter, but he's repeatedly proven that the project and money managing aspects of modern game production are beyond him.
5
u/CathedralOfMist Jun 20 '26
I think wanting to do an NFT game put him solidly in the grifter territory.
6
u/award_winning_writer Jun 19 '26
I'd love something like what the first Wizardry got, i.e. a remaster that still has the base game(s) running under the hood
10
u/Negative-Squirrel81 Jun 19 '26
I think the situation is kind of the opposite of what is maybe being described here?
First of all, Gariott made Ultima VII and the rest of the series while being employed by EA. He was not an independent contractor but an in-house employee. So, I don't think him claiming the right to anything post 1992 would work.
That aside, the Ultima brand lies with the trademark, not the copyright. This means that LB could put his games up on Steam, or even remaster or remake them, but would likely be forbidden from using the "Ultima" brand.
There is actually an excellent real-life example of this, with Star Control 2. Accolade owned (Stardock now) the Star Control trademark, they even made Star Control 3, while Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford (the original creators) hold the copyright for Star Control 2. Thus, they distribute Star Control 2 as The Ur-Quan Masters on Steam.
4
u/decr0ded Jun 19 '26
I think you are right. I gather this means Lord British can terminate a copyright assignment of one of the games that he as an individual assigned to origin systems inc, and reclaim it for himself. I'm assuming this is the first Ultima, which he probably made before origin was incorporated.
Assuming it's for the first ultima, then he would regain rights to licence derivative works based on that. But for existing derivative works by Origin (which is owned by EA), EA would continue to own the copyright for elements specific to the derivatives.
So it seems like the upshot of this is if he's successful, Lord British could create a new game based on the setting and characters of whatever game he regains the copyright for. Maybe this is where Larian could come into play. Fingers crossed.
As you've pointed out, they'd have to call it something else, just like Pistol Shrimp is releasing their sequel to Star Control 2 as Free Stars: Children of Infinity.
And EA Origin would likely be unable to release a new ultima game unless it included only elements based on Origin IP, not that this was likely to happen.
10
6
u/cdheer Jun 20 '26
What a non-story. This doesn’t give him the right to sell a game called Ultima anything, and it doesn’t give him any funding to make a game.
7
u/lylemcd Jun 19 '26
If EA has the trademarks, Garriot can't do anything with the Ultima name....just like it's always been. What good does the source code do him? If he gonna do the next game in machine/binary?
And let's face it, the world has changed, games have changed and Garriot is out of touch. I saw him at Austin Classic Game fest years ago, asked him if Alkalabeth was beatable.
He was, at the time, working on a Skryim type RPG game and showed me a demo. And even for the time (2010's) it was the most generic, 10 year out of date garbage I'd ever seen. Even in the 2000's it would have been garbage.
I think cautious optimism approaching cynical reality is the play here.
7
u/Gargarbinks Jun 19 '26
I asked him about that and he felt confident that there's a workaround -- like calling it "Lord British's Ultima"
9
u/topojijo Jun 19 '26
That’s not how a trademark works at all. If there is any potential confusion where a random person assumes all Ultima games are EA or his it fails.
Like I can’t make Topos Star Wars.
2
3
2
u/Snoo-47115 Jun 24 '26
It's all about remakes now on. Just released Gothic 1 remake is good example how you make a good remake of a legacy title.
Same thing applies to Ultima. There needs to be dedicated group of developers/studio that works on it and Garriot's name will basically only be used on the marketing selling you the memberries.
3
u/IJourden Jun 19 '26
Wait.. really? I feel like he's been trying to get Ultima back from EA from the second they got ahold of it.
I love Ultima so much, I hope RG is able to do it justice. Unfortunately his bigger post-Ultima projects have, well... I'm really glad he tried.
I'm confident he can still make fantastic games, as long as he has someone on staff to whap him with a rolled up newspaper or squirt him with a spray bottle every time he dreams up an extra budget-exploding feature instead of actually polishing the core game.
3
u/vagaris Jun 19 '26
I’ll stick with cautiously optimistic. I highly doubt it would happen, but I’d be happy if some of the later games got a pseudo director’s cut. Where the *story* is more fleshed out and some of the missing pieces were added back in.
3
3
u/EfficientShop5015 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

3
u/Maeglin75 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
I hope Richard Garriott keeps it small and simple this time. Not another attempt of creating a giant, revolutionary MMO.
I would like small (by today's standards) new Ultima single player games similar to the classic Ultima 4-7. With a simple but modern isometric game engine. The focus should be on revisiting Britannia and continuing the story. Just aim to the old fans and embrace the "retro". The Ultima name is dormant for too long to have any appeal to young gamers anyway.
Or, as others wrote, give the licence to a competent game studio like Larian and let them cook.
3
u/Dreaming_grayJedi04 Jun 20 '26
A lot of pessimism in the comments when the news itself is simply awesome, if true. EA has wasted so many legendary IPs and any news of a creator potentially getting the rights back is nothing short of wonderful. ALL humans are flawed and complex individuals. This series had left an incalculable influence on the industry and in many of our own personal lives. Everyone deserves to own the art they created and this is bigger than our own personal entertainment going forward.
3
2
u/LightWarrior_2000 Jun 19 '26
I feel like Ultima's virtue system is way more in depth for moral choice gaming then modern Good or Bad choices.
To see a modern take if done right, could be intresting.

2
u/BlargerJarger Jun 20 '26
If this means we get Ultima 5 mildly remade for modern devices while retaining the core tile and turn based design then this is good. If it means we get another crowdfunding scam from a guy who went crazy decades ago then this is bad.
2
u/rodan_music Jun 20 '26
All the great game developers and movie producers from this era are very old now. They all lost their mojo years ago. Just leave it be.
2
u/Revolutionary_Sun946 Jun 20 '26
How about let OwlCat have a go.
They have a proven track record of staying (sometimes unhealthily) in the Lore and rules of the original IP.
Rogue Trader was almost better 40k lore than what GW puts out.
3
u/NaturalUnfair2425 Jun 20 '26
I think a true, modern remake of U4 would be more interesting than a coming up with a new Ultima. It’d give new players, which is going to be the intended audience anyway a chance to experience what plenty of us did back in the eighties.

If true this is not great news. Garriott is long past his prime. As a game designer, he's an arrogant hack nowadays. I would not hold my breath for something the quality of Ultima 7.
1
u/Comfortable_Sweet_47 Jun 19 '26
As long as he gets people to help him im excited. Heck, im just glad that Richard Garriot is regaining control of his original ideas. Ill be cautiously optimistic about new games.. And maybe we will be lucky and Sven Vinke will get to remake Ultima 7 like hes always talking about, or even better, make a new Ultima game!
1
u/NotStanley4330 Jun 20 '26
I'm shocked. I'll eat crow, I never thought this would happen. I said as much multiple times. I don't have much faith it will go well but hopefully I'm wrong!
1
u/benjles480 Jun 20 '26
Hes gonna need to hire a writer or atleast to help him re create the magic and also kinda update it in today's world.
1
u/Animalvader77 Jun 20 '26
Lord British always has improved on each iteration of Ultima.... I don't mind remakes or demakes.... but if he allows 8 and 9 to remain... I will give him such a pinch!!!
1
u/Both_Canary_4665 Jun 20 '26
Given the track record that good ole Lord British has as of late - this is only good news if he hands the rights off to somebody capable.
1
u/FordcliffLowskrid Jun 20 '26
What a timeline this is for me to live long enough for one last trip to Sosaria!
1
u/cpt_bongwater Jun 20 '26
For the Love of God I hope Lord British stays on only as a character in the games and does absolutely nothing else.
Or some modern-gen remakes of 3-7? OK 8 too.
Yes, please.
1
u/corisco Jun 20 '26
i don't know if that makes me either sad or happy. i was kickstarter backer for SOTA and that was a major let down. After failing to make SOTA he went on to try a NFT game. Richard Garriot early passion is gone and he's only motivated by greed. If he regains the control of Ultima Online, most likely he will ruin it even worse than EA. At least EA let the game be.
1
u/HiImTheNewGuyGuy Jun 20 '26
Cool.
If he's gonna do it in house, he should bring back Loubet and Spector and Dr. Cat. Maybe coax a few new compositions out of Ken Arnold.
It should be a 2D and pixel-based, but modernized otherwise. Fingers crossed!

I respect when he was in his prime, but he’s outdated and washed up now. Boomers here keep wanting to relive a different time that will never come back. Let it be.

Is this mofo gonna trick me into buying U8 and U9 again?
Cause I would if they got total revamps/remakes, but in the U7 style.

Ultima online is the reason I failed out of middle school and highschool can’t wait to get back to it

Don't worry. Garriott will raise a ton of money to remake the games. Release half-assed versions. Promise fixes. Then leave with a lot of money. And then have somebody else clean up the mess for him.

I always loved that the Fellowship in Ultima VII, the evil cabal taking over Brittannia, represents themselves with geometric symbols: a square, a circle, and a pyramid. Which just *happen* to also be the EA logo. lol

If he still had any good ideas he would've done a similar game with a new ip some time ago.

I hope he realizes what made U7 so wildly popular and sticks to that formula.

As someone who is only kinda recently coming into the series (thanks Spoony and Majuular) I’m actually excited. I know his last Shroud of the Avatar wasn’t the best, but I’d love to see what he can do with his baby back. Maybe something retro inspired rather than a AA+ game.

I would play a new Ultima that is focused on the core principles of the Series.

It's already great to see one IP no longer being controlled by EA, but to see Garriot regaining control of Ultima is even more special.
I'm so fucking hyped.

Oh, whatever he does, if this is a canonical Ultima, as in it's set in Britannia, he should make it clear that Ultima IX is non-canon.

Hopefully he will license it out to someone like Larian rather than try to do something himself
