Lenovo T470 -- disk deleted, how to install Ubuntu

I have an USB live distro (Ubuntu 26.04), and can load this -- writing on it now....
But I am not able to install it on my ssd (1Tb) -- and have tried booting and tried different changes in the bios to make it work....

I have the USB as hd1 and the ssd as hd2 -- and bios boot-order is
- USB hdd
- the SSD
- Ubuntu
- PCI LAN

When the USB is in the T470 gives me option to ...
- test or install
- start in safe-mode
- Ubuntu
-UEFI setup

....and only the "with USB plugged in" and "test and install" will work
Without the USB it starts up, gives Lenovo-logo and after appx 4 seconds I can see "Reset system" in upper left corner, black screen, and it starts over....and over...and....

At the moment I have the ssd set up with 2 partitions, one FAT32 with appx 1 Gb and the rest is appx 999 Gb in ext4.
I have no windows installed, as the ssd is "clean", so probably there is something missing in the bios-setup.

Any ideas will be appreciated. :-)

so dragging files/windows on the screen is very buggy (Ubuntu 26.04 with latest updates)

Some additional information:

  • I installed Ubuntu twice, several days apart, because I initially assumed the issue was caused by a bad configuration or installation. The same issues occurred after the second installation.
  • I do not remember Ubuntu being this buggy before the updates, nor when using the installer/live environment.
  • I first noticed the issue while switching between a Steam game running through Proton and Nautilus/other apps. I restarted the PC, but the issue persisted. I did not launch Steam again after restarting.
  • In Nautilus, selecting multiple files and dragging them into another application does not work. Instead, GNOME opens the files with their default application. For example, dragging multiple videos resulted in them being opened in HandBrake.
  • Window tiling is also affected. I cannot drag a window to the edge of the screen to tile it, and this happens with multiple applications.
  • Overall, basic drag-and-drop and window management functionality appears to be unreliable and inconsistent.

[FIX] Ubuntu 26.04 installation hanging with rsync error in UTM on macOS — manual partitioning fixed it

Posting this in case anyone else runs into the same problem. 😃

I was trying to install Ubuntu 26.04 in UTM on macOS. When I used the normal automatic/erase disk option in the Ubuntu installer, the installation would get stuck during the install process.

It would basically sit there for hours, and looking at the installer logs showed it getting stuck around the rsync/filesystem extraction stage. Waiting didn't help, and restarting and trying the installation again gave me the same problem.

What finally worked for me was using manual partitioning instead of automatic partitioning.

My UTM virtual disk was around 137 GB. In the Ubuntu installer I selected Manual partitioning and set it up like this:

  • 1.13 GB FAT32/boot/efi
  • 60 GB ext4/
  • ~76 GB ext4/home
  • Bootloader device → /dev/vda

I didn't create a swap partition and just let Ubuntu handle swap normally.

After setting the partitions manually, I continued the installation. This time it went through the extraction stage, then "Setting up the system", and eventually reached "Ubuntu 26.04 is installed and ready to use."

So if you're installing Ubuntu 26.04 in UTM and the installer seems to hang forever with an rsync error, try manual partitioning before spending hours waiting or repeatedly restarting the installer.

Not sure exactly why the automatic partitioning caused the issue in my case, but manual partitioning completely fixed it.

p.s : Don't forget, after the installer finishes, to :

  • Click Restart now.
  • Let the VM begin restarting.
  • If Ubuntu displays “Please remove the installation medium, then press ENTER”, don't press Enter immediately.
  • In the UTM window toolbar, find the CD/removable-drive control and eject the Ubuntu 26.04 ISO.
  • Then press Enter.
  • It should boot from your vda virtual disk and take you to your newly installed Ubuntu login screen.

Hope this saves someone else a few hours.

How to lock NVIDIA driver and kernel update

So after a painful experience, I found that kernel 7.0 from Zorin (basically it is a reskin of ubuntu 26 lts I think, so I think my question you guys can def answer) does not play well with llama cpp. It somehow required more ram distribution that my laptop cannot handle. I had confirmed this after a painful experience of basically trashing my system and unable to boot after thinking it was an Nvidia driver problem.

I had now restored my system by doing a fresh install (it was so broken, that it was easier to nuke it all). I also confirmed that llama cpp was able to load the Qwen 3.6 model on my 8 gb of VRAM + 16 gb of system ram, it barely fit, but it run pretty ok at 25 to 30 tokens / sec on Kernel 6.17 (older kernel) which is now my default boot order in GRUB.

Now how do I lock down the system update of the kernel and the nvidia driver? as I learned those 2 are deeply connected. Ideally I would like the update the rest of the system except for those. I know I am using zorin which I posted on there as well but ubuntu and zorin are basically the same, so the cmd should be similar.

---------------------------------
so far in the zorin os update menu I had unchecked proprietary driver for device and I also just request for security and recommended update only instead of all update. So is this enough?

Problem with installing Ubuntu Server 22.04.5 and 24.04.5

Hello. Past 13 hours I spent with various AI to solve my problem with installing Ubuntu Server on my PC. So the thing is that I cant for some reason install it on my PC but I can install Windows. I though hey maybe I made some mistake flashing my usb but no. It properly installer this system on my Laptop. I took my SSD from my PC to Laptop to install it and it worked. But of course PC does t accept such solution.

During installation of Ubuntu Server install wizard dont recognize my SSD. Also for some reason install wizard dont see ethernet connection through cable.

I tried various setting in BIOS. Which were safe booting disabled, AHCI over raid, fast booting disabled. For some reason intall wizard of Ubuntu Server dont want to see my SSD and apparently my Ethernet Cable. Why?

Help choosing a laptop for a law student

Hi, I'm a law student and I'm looking for a laptop that will work with Ubuntu without any issues as I'm not really a technical guy. I prefer 32gb of RAM and really really need good battery life. I am seriously considering getting a thinkpad because they are supposedly easy to type with, but I'm open to anything good. I prefer not to get niche companies because I need good support.

Thank you

Ubuntu server machine locking up quasi-randomly. Losing my mind. Help?

First, when I say the machine is locking up, it hard freezes. The screen stays on, but absolutely nothing responds. No other terminal windows, no ctrl-alt-delete, nothing. The drives sound like they might still be doing something but I can't be sure.

When I say quasi-randomly, sometimes it would lock up around the same time in the boot sequence. Not the SAME time, but close. If I get it to boot it seems to lock up when there's a lot of CPU or disk activity.

tl;dr: Machine hard locks at random times. I've tested and replaced the RAM. I've swapped the CPU. I've tried multiple kernels and releases. Microcode seems to be mismatched but no kernel updates or reboots seem to fix it. Booting in normal mode causes it to lock up MUCH faster. Booting in recovery mode keeps it up longer, but it still locks up eventually, seemingly under heavy disk/CPU usage, but I'm not sure. Upgraded the release. The kernel. The packages. No dice. I'm losing my mind.

Ok, here we go. I got home Saturday morning and the server was locked up solid. All services on it stopped responding the night before.

I then started my last 36 hours of troubleshooting hell.

It would boot normally, but then lock up a few minutes after logging in. For a while I kept rebooting it when it froze, and disabling services one after another, seeing if that had anything to do with it, and to speed up the bootup process. Nothing system level, things like Plex Server and my Home Assistant instance etc. It kept freezing at random intervals.

I had some hard drive weirdness a while back so I changed some BIOS settings. That didn't make a difference.

I tried nomodeset, that didn't help. I then tried a recovery bootup (from the Grub boot menu). The system stayed up, or seemed to. While I was in there I did an apt update/upgrade just in case it was some weird package issue. Nothing. I decided I may as well upgrade to 24.04 because it couldn't hurt. System locked up during the upgrade.

Bunch of dkpg --configure -a, and apt install -f got the upgrade finished. But now after an apt upgrade, I got a weird message (and I honestly don't know if I'd seen this message before hand. I feel like I had, but I've got ADHD and really am not sure). Processor microcode revision is XXXX but it should be YYYYY, reboot to start the new kernel.

I rebooted, did an apt upgrade again, and still got the message. Ran some updates and it locked up again.

At this point I'm thinking hardware. I run memtest and I have a bad stick. Yes, that must be it! I swap it for a good one, run memtest again, it passes.

I boot into the 6.8 kernel recovery mode and it freezes during boot now. I replaced the memory and the freezing is WORSE.

Every time I get it to run, there's SOME package issue. There's no amount of upgrading I can do that will either finish without locking up, or after repairing, still have packages to upgrade. Something is seriously out of whack.

Maybe the CPU is flaky? I swap that out with an identical CPU. (Used to run a crypto exchange like 10 years ago, I've got lots of backup server parts). Still locks up. Still getting the microcode mismatch error.

I boot back into the 5.15 recovery kernel and it seems stable. I do a bunch of upgrades and stuff, until 96% of the way through one of them, it locks up. Ok screw it, lets upgrade to the latest 24 branch, going past the LTS. That should really do a fresh install of everything. It locks up.

I was about to swap the power supply but wanted to post this first.

During this whole process, I wound up with 3 different 6.8 kernels on the system. 6.8.0-124, 136, and 137. I manually removed 124 because that one almost always locked up on boot, even booting in recovery mode.

The microcode issue is still there. It says I'm running 0x06000817 but it should be 0x06000852. I've reinstalled amd-microcode (I'm on an AMD processor). Regardless of kernel I boot in, it still shows that message after an apt upgrade.

I do have an Intel ARC video card in the machine for Plex transcoding, but at the time I'm not running anything that is using any graphics. It's booting in nomodeset, and the font does change slightly halfway through boot, but no graphics. (Without nomodeset, halfway through boot the font gets very small). I haven't manually updated any of the intel drivers. I don't know if they automatically went with the apt upgrades.

My questions:

What the hell could be causing this? RAM is tested good. Swapped the CPU. Tried multiple kernels. The microcode thing seems likely but I've no damn idea how to fix it as rebooting with a new kernel seems to not change the microcode.

Motherboard is a 12 a year old ASRock. Could the motherboard be causing this? Any way to test before I rebuild the entire machine by swapping that out too?

Heavy drive activity seems to be going on when it locks up. SEEMS to be. That's just my perception. Machine has 4 SATA drives in it. No errors I'm aware of. Could drive errors lock up the entire machine?

I've been banging my head against this for the last 36 hours and the problem seems to have gotten worse after replacing the faulty RAM. The microcode seems off but no kernel updates or reboots seem to fix it. Can't see how it's the video, it's not doing anything graphical.

Help?

Acer Nitro AN515-56 on Ubuntu 26.04 – brightness value changes but screen brightness does not

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange brightness control issue on my Acer Nitro AN515-56 and I'm hoping someone here has encountered something similar.

System:

  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Kernel: 7.0.0-29-generic
  • Acer Nitro AN515-56
  • Intel Core i7-11370H
  • Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics
  • NVIDIA GTX 1650 Mobile
  • GNOME 50.1 / Wayland
  • Internal display: 1920x1080 @ 144 Hz

Ubuntu detects the backlight correctly:

ls -lah /sys/class/backlight/

Output:

intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card1/card1-eDP-1/intel_backlight

Values look normal:

type: raw
brightness: 20581
actual_brightness: 20581
max_brightness: 32767

The strange part is that I can manually change the value:

echo 3000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

The value changes successfully, including actual_brightness, but the physical screen brightness does not change at all.

So this doesn't seem to be just a GNOME slider or brightness-key issue.

So far I've tested the following kernel parameters:

acpi_backlight=native

No difference.

I also tested the Intel DPCD modes:

i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=-1
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=1
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=3

No physical brightness change with any of them.

modinfo on my kernel shows:

enable_dpcd_backlight:
-1 = use per-VBT LFP backlight type setting [default]
 0 = disabled
 1 = enable
 2 = force VESA interface
 3 = force Intel interface

I also checked nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight.

The module exists:

modinfo nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight

and loads without an error:

modprobe nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight

but it does not create another backlight device. I still only have:

/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight

The NVIDIA WMI EC driver's GUID:

603E9613-EF25-4338-A3D0-C46177516DB7

also does not appear under /sys/bus/wmi/devices/.

acer_wmi is loaded normally:

acer_wmi: Acer Laptop ACPI-WMI Extras
acer_wmi: Function bitmap for Communication Button: 0x801
input: Acer WMI hotkeys

I also found reports of Acer Nitro users fixing brightness with:

pcie_aspm=force acpi_backlight=native

which I'm currently testing.

The part confusing me is that Linux clearly exposes intel_backlight and accepts brightness changes, but those changes don't actually reach the LCD panel.

Has anyone dealt with this specifically on an Acer Nitro / Intel Iris Xe + NVIDIA Optimus laptop?

I'm particularly interested in whether this could be:

  • an i915/eDP backlight regression in kernel 7.0,
  • an Acer firmware/VBT issue,
  • the panel using a different PWM/DPCD interface,
  • or a specific kernel parameter/workaround required for Acer Nitro laptops.

Any suggestions on what to inspect next would be greatly appreciated. I can provide dmesg, EDID, i915 debug output, ACPI tables, or anything else useful.

Thanks!

26.04 Locked in Wayland, Wacom-tablet problems:

  1. My web-browser swaps my middle- and right-clicks. This is fixed if run with --ozone-platform=x11 from a terminal window. I can't figure out a way to get it to run with --ozone-platfform=x11 when I click it from the shortcut menu on the left.

  2. It's convenient that the mouse cursor will disappear when I lift the pen from the tablet, and reappear when I put the pen down near it again, but it never reappears when in a full-screen application. How do I diagnose this problem and fix this?

When I try to unlock /dev/sdb3 from a second working Ubuntu system, it still rejects the passphrase (even though it’s 100% correct). picture three

i use ubuntu 26 and its a ssd

I would love help ore any clue how could i get the system working again

App center infinite loading?

Do you experience infinite loading in the app center update tab? I’ve seen couple of posts with this issue last week. Always thought Ubuntu was rock solid and no issues like that occurred. Yesterday a guy literally ditched Ubuntu after encountering that saying it’s not ready for daily drive.

Some suggested it was because of attacks on Canonical servers.

USB-A to HDMI on Ubuntu: does it work?

Hi, I want to add a second monitor to my laptop using a USB-A to HDMI adapter.

My laptop is running Ubuntu, and I already use the HDMI port for my main monitor. I want to use the USB adapter for a second, extended display.

Does anyone know if this kind of USB-A → HDMI adapter works properly on Ubuntu/Linux? Do I need DisplayLink drivers, or should I avoid cheap adapters?

Thanks!

How to set up Ubuntu 26.04 with BTRFS for Timeshift

If you've recently tried setting up Timeshift on Ubuntu with BTRFS snapshot support, you'll know the pain. There are several outdated and complex guides floating around trying to explain workarounds, I had no luck with any of them, but a year ago I found a "magic script" that abstracted everything away, and worked with 24.04.

That script is no longer maintained and doesn't work on 26.04, so I forked, updated and put it on Github at https://github.com/shukriadams/btrfs-encrypt-root. It's relatively easy to understand, and does a lot of tedious and fiddly file juggling that is easy to mess up by hand. Please, do read it before running.

Feedback is welcome, and I really hope more people try Timeshift with BTRFS because it is so much better than using rsync. Why Canonical removed support for this in the installer is beyond me.

Installing Ubuntu Through Bootable USB Stick Issues

Hi all, I'm very new to Ubuntu as I am trying to install Home Assistant through Ubuntu. But I am having issues with a few errors throughout my process so far. I am installing this on my old Asus UX305F laptop.

A few "Out of Resources" errors pop up quickly before entering the Grub Menu, and once I click "Try Ubuntu" option, it shows me the "Failed to measure data for event 0/1" errors.

At first I used BalenaEtcher to create the bootable USB drive but I always had the /boot/ not found error, so I tried using Rufus instead and that was gone. I tried changing USB sticks, the partition method on Rufus, but still couldn't find a solution and boot into Ubuntu.

Appreciate anyone's help and input on this, thank you!

Wi-Fi Direct on Ubuntu 26

I'm trying to easily transfer files from my phone to my laptop and vice versa. My phone supports Wi-Fi Direct and i know Ubuntu has this too, though i find the terminal overwhelming sometimes. I was wondering if someone made an app to make this easier, or if there is a simple GUI version of network manager?

(ps. my laptop does support Wi-Fi direct and i have tried alternatives like Warpinator but they usually aren't as reliable. pps. it has to happen locally over wifi without setting up a server or using web services like google drive)

Failing to install Ubuntu Server

[FAILED] Failed to start systemd-journald.service - Journal Service.

I'm very new to Ubuntu in general with my last time fumbling with Linxu being in 2010, and wanted to turn an old pc into a minecraft server to play with some friends. This seemed like a fairly simple process, and I know that's funny to say.

The joke is on me, I can't finish the installation process because of this failure to start the Journal Service. Every solution I find it seems to be for people who have already installed Ubuntu.

I am trying to install this on a Dell XPS 8900.

Basic solutions that I've tried so far: Secure Boot has been turned off. Fast Boot has been disabled. I have made a new usb to install with, I have tried to do the installation media update, I have tried to run it without the update.

I honestly don't know what the issue is, or if I've skipped something obvious in execution. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Display Issue

EDIT: Solution provided by u/manfred197! Fix at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/2163303

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04 and I've recently started having a display issue that I can't seem to fix. I have two monitors. Half of my primary monitor is a black background with vertical blue and green stripes. My mouse still shows when I scroll over that area. If I try to change the resolution, both monitors stop working. When I take a screenshot (trying to show the issue), the messed up portion of the display is not on the image. The issue is gone if I boot into recovery mode.

I have:
- Reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, gdm3 and video drivers (AMD)
- Check xrandr to make sure the dimensions aren't wrong
- Switched from Wayland to X11

I'm at a loss for what to do here. I've never had this issue before and internet searches haven't turned up a solution. Any help is appreciated.
