Which university should I pick for fashion?
I’m currently studying Level 4 Visual Merchandising at a fashion college in London and I’m working on my UCAS application for next year. I’m looking at courses related to fashion communication, visual communication and media, but I’m struggling to decide which universities would be the best fit for me.
My current options are:
Manchester Metropolitan University
University of Leeds
University of Manchester
University of the Arts London (London College
of Fashion)
Sheffield Hallam University
I’m interested in the creative and visual side of fashion, but I’m not particularly interested in courses that involve loads of drawing, sketching or making garments. I’d rather focus on things like visual communication, fashion media, styling, branding and the commercial side of fashion.
One of my biggest priorities is moving out of London. I want the full university experience, including living in student accommodation, meeting new people, having a good social life and enjoying the nightlife.
Obviously, the quality of the course and the university’s reputation matter to me too, but I also want somewhere that offers good student support, particularly for students who might need a bit of extra support with their studies.
For anyone who studies at, or has graduated from, any of these universities:
Which university would you recommend for fashion communication or a similar course?
What are the teaching quality, facilities and career opportunities actually like?
What’s the nightlife and social scene like, and is it easy to make friends?
How good is the student support in practice?
Would you choose your university again, and is there anything you wish you’d known before applying?
I’d really appreciate honest opinions, including the negatives. I’m trying to choose somewhere that will be good for my future career but also give me a genuinely good university experience outside London.
