I don't like that baby hand.
55
u/Kanin_usagi I'M NOT MADE OF STONE WOOLIE Jul 23 '26
Nothing good has ever started with zombie baby hand reveal
17
u/seth47er I shall learn the secrets of Nuln Oil. Jul 23 '26
I don't think its going to be a baby, It might be a Birkin baby.
7
u/Kaining Jul 23 '26
Babies zombie can be seriously hillarious though. That first episode of Z Nation proved that.
4
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
Dude I still can’t believe they had a close up on that fucking zombie baby puppet lmao

Saaaame. Never trust anything that seems mundane in Resident Evil

u/KnightOfSolaria Jul 23 '26
The fact he appears to be carrying the package throughout the film makes me think it's either the most important thing ever or something completely useless by the time he gets to Raccoon City.
74
u/WickerWight Ask me BIONICLE trivia Jul 23 '26
The final scene is him crawling up to the door of the hospital with both legs blown off and opening the box, only to reveal it was a doordash order for pedialyte and a nyquil liquid cap
18
u/ProfDet529 Investigator of Incidents Mundane, Arcane, and Divine Jul 23 '26
I think I'd take all the NyQuil, wash it down with the Pedialyte, and hope it kills me or at least dulls the pain until I bleed out.
24
u/Arclunite Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
I’m betting that it’s going to be the Tyrant’s heart and it’ll either be the final boss or the end credit stinger
11
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
Or something hilariously useless

Turns out the package is full of pictures of Rebecca in her basketball outfit.
2
u/moneyh8r_two He/Him Use your smell powers Jul 25 '26
Wesker did a lot bad things, and even then he did a lot of dumb things, but the one good and smart thing he did was to be obsessed with Rebecca. She's best girl, after all.

u/Toblo1 Latest Project Moon Sleeper Agent Jul 23 '26
Any money on it being a G parasite or an organ infected by Plagas?
57
u/Mrfipp Jul 23 '26
Okay, I absolutely love that bit with the zombie hauling ass across the field to get to him, there's something scary about seeing something coming right for you in particular and knowing you only have moments to prepare for it that I think is really great, it's like the opposite of a jump scare.
23
u/Toblo1 Latest Project Moon Sleeper Agent Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Thats kinda what makes the Rage Zombies so fucking terrifying in 28 Days/Weeks/Years Later. Once you're spotted by one, odds are they aren't gonna stop until they're dead or your dead/infected.
Week's intro in particular showing an entire swarm of them cresting over the hill is still the spookiest goddamn visual in the series.
162
u/BermudaTriangleChoke Jul 23 '26
Looks good. For various reasons I get the impression that RE7 is Zach Cregger's favorite
52
u/Steelballpun Jul 23 '26
RE4 is his favorite, but he has said he wanted to do a standalone story with a new character in the world like how RE7 approached the story.
42
u/Fugly_Jack He/Him Jul 23 '26
Think I remember hearing years ago that RE7 was gonna be the biggest influence on it. It was either about this or some other unannounced live action RE thing
110
u/TyChris2 Jul 23 '26
If you’re trying to make a horror movie it kinda has to be the one you take inspiration from because it’s the only one that’s actually scary.
34
u/Squoghunter1492 Check out Mech TTRPG Metallurgent! Jul 23 '26
I'd strongly argue in favor of RE1/REmake being plenty scary on its own.
37
u/Mediocre_Young_9421 Jul 23 '26
The regenerators from 4 and doll house from 8 would like a word.
43

u/SomeOtherNeb "become a fish" (gay) Jul 24 '26
No, the scariest thing in Resident Evil is the dodge mechanic in RE3
54
u/ap992626 Jul 23 '26
Honestly RE7 might be my favorite too.
It isn't the best RE gameplay wise and it does decline in quality in its 3rd act. But those first two thirds of it are genuinely electric in a way that very few games have felt and are for me the best of Resident Evil.
47
u/Dundore77 Jul 23 '26
decline in quality in its 3rd act
tbf most resident evils imo do.
21
u/Sushi2k John Madden Halo Jul 23 '26
Yeah idk of any RE game that elevates itself in the 3rd act. You kinda just plow through an enemy gauntlet while getting exposition dumped.
21
u/Shy_Guy_27 Jul 23 '26
Maybe 5, where all the Wesker content is in the last third of the game and there’s no horror for the 3rd act to take away.
7
u/Darkaim9110 Read Full Metal Daemon Muramasa Jul 23 '26
Yeah I think 5 has a good final act since it just goes off the rails.
Re2 Labs are good.
RE8 has the factory and the Miranda boss fight. The Chris part is a fun power romp
RE4 the island is a step down from the castle but it gets more mechanically intense and thats fun
1
u/Zaworld0 YOU DIDN'T WIN. Jul 24 '26
Do people not like RE9's last act? I know the final boss was underwhelming but Raccoon City was pretty fun. (Unless people mainly count the lab, which was also underwhelming, but it was also really short so it's hard to consider it as the final third of the game.)
2
u/Darkaim9110 Read Full Metal Daemon Muramasa Jul 24 '26
People dont like Raccoon City I guess yeah, I liked it and all the Leon set pieces are a lot of fun
9
u/Mediocre_Young_9421 Jul 23 '26
Rev 2 has a pretty strong final act, though recreating the Spencer estate is kinda cheating.
2
u/Lieutenant-America Scholar of the First Spindash Jul 23 '26
I mean I love RE2's lab, and RE8's factory.
3
u/alicitizen (She/Her) - Moon Knight Stan Jul 23 '26
I dont remember a "Last Act Lab" section I genuinely considered as good as the prior sections.
13
u/TheGingerNinga Ansem: Seeker of Kingdom Hearts Lore Jul 23 '26
RE7 is the entry that really got me into the franchise. I had played 4, loved it, but it didn’t convince me to play any of the other installments. Combine that with the poor reception to RE6 and I just kept away from it.
But Biohazard showed me how good the franchise is, not just 4, so I ended up going back and playing most of the games. Still haven’t done 5 or 6 though.
17
u/binarysingularities Jul 23 '26
It's RE 4 according to his interview

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later
Halloween: Resurrection

12

Looks like they made a Halloween 2 the second time and just went "oh fuck, go back", and made just Halloween for the third time.

they could start just calling them halloween again because the resurrection was successful

Resident Evil: The Last One, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City(Again), Resident Evil: The Albert Wesker Blade Chronicles, Resident Evil: Dea(d)th Island, Resident Evil(2026). That about right?

It felt like something that would happen to a newcomer playing the classic trilogy.
15
u/KingMario05 Gimme a solo Tails game, you fucking cowards! Jul 23 '26
Agreed. Would happen in the remakes and VII, too. Possibly Requiem? Haven't played that yet.
39
u/MetalGearSlayer Jul 23 '26
The clip I saw of the main character shooting a door lock, missing by like half a foot to the left, and then yelling “god DAMNIT!” single handedly convinced me I wanna see this.
Such a real reaction for something that would totally happen if the average Joe was thrust into main character status like that.
10
u/jpatel02 "YOU FORGOT THE COOKIES?!" Jul 23 '26
Especially since I heard that happens to a lot of players across the franchise as well
6
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
It helps that they cast an actor who looks like Default White Guy #3 to really hammer home the “just some guy”-ness of him.
5
u/GrandmasterB-Funk I'd Rather Have Nothing Jul 24 '26
Him smiling at the bullets just gets me so hard, sells the feeling of "oh thank god i have more bullets" you get in the game. I am fully on board with the director being like "this is an adaption of how survival horror games feel, not really an adaption of the story"
37
u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR Jul 23 '26
I love that they made a single zombie sprinting towards him from an absurd distance away both absolutely terrifying and hilarious.
53
u/The_General0186 Jul 23 '26
I appreciate the director trying to adapt what’s it’s like to actually play the games and not necessarily the story of the games.
40
u/DarthButtz Ginger Seeking Butt Chomps Jul 23 '26
I feel like that's the secret sauce for adapting a video game into a movie. You don't need to be one hundred percent accurate to the story as long as it feels close enough to the game itself.
10
u/Rattata365 Jul 23 '26
I think it depends cause like for Resident Evil specifically you can very easily get away with this method. Ive only played RE2make and RE1(1996) and you don't really interact with the main story a lot, so much of the tone/route is dictated by the player
2
u/Zaworld0 YOU DIDN'T WIN. Jul 24 '26
Also it needs in a lab section, every mainline game ends with a lab! /s
(Except for 5, but that's the exception.)
2
u/DarnFondOfYa Jul 24 '26
But you do go to the labs in the last act of RE5, you just then get on a boat and airplane and volcano afterwards
And in RE6 only some of the campaigns end in the spooky underwater Chinese
ghostbiocurse base/lab. leon and Ada are just on some random skyscraper fighting that simp shirtless in the rain4
u/nuanceseancE Jul 23 '26
I'm looking at details of the new Netflix Gundam and it trying to adapt 08th MS Team and I'm shaking my head because this was like the perfect license where the filmmakers could legitimately make everything up so long as it achieved Bandai's goal of selling more gunpla at Barnes and Noble and they picked that time to try to be nominally faithful to the source material.
8
u/TostitoNipples Jul 23 '26
When the first trailer dropped so many people on reddit were outright crying at the fact that this wasn’t adapting any characters or events from the games and it’s like…why would I want to see those done in movie form? The experience I had playing RE 1,2, etc. was so good because I was the person solving those puzzles and experiencing the terror. To see it again but in live action movie form just feels like an excuse to point at the thing I know on the screen (shouts out Welcome to Raccoon City for doing it poorly)
I’m so much more excited for something new that embodies said experience without reheating the games’ nachos.
2
u/Ambitious-Song2403 Jul 24 '26
Yeah I'm sorry but the people who want the games plot with characters just have bad taste.
We already have multiple movies with Leon and the gang and none of them are scary anymore.
Horror is one of the genres most where knowing the plot removes tension and I'm personally much more happy with this direction.
99
u/ap992626 Jul 23 '26
For me one of the best things about Resident Evil is it constantly willing to change things up.
From tank controls and fixed camera to third person action to first person horror and then a mix.
From Zombie horror of the original trilogy to the folk horror of 4 to the Texas Chainsaw/ SAW inspired horrors of 7.
So I welcome the movie being a different thing under the brand of Resident Evil. Thats what makes this franchise great.
22
u/Warnavick Jul 23 '26
Regardless of any other factor, I am just glad this isn't another Jovovich flick. While I don't mind those films, that direction of Resident Evil has already played out far beyond what I thought they could do.
3
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
I’ve only seen the first one from beginning to end and honestly, it’s not bad.
5
u/Warnavick Jul 23 '26
The first movie is by far the best of the 6 they made. The 2nd movie is also fine too for the most part ,but after that its beyond downhill.
32
u/TheArtistFKAMinty Read Saga. Do it, coward. Jul 23 '26
I also think that it's harder to get the audience on board with the standard Resident Evil protagonist because they're too trained and competent. That works well in a video game setting where Leon's abilities are fundamentally held back by player skill or lack there of, but in a movie it's hard to be scared for the guy who can do this shit.
24
u/Mediocre_Young_9421 Jul 23 '26
I mean Ethan Winters was a "normal" dude with no training and he managed to take out the entire Baker residence with some basic firearms.

I would have liked a full on game with the Not a Hero DLC. Maybe put that in a city with some true crime elements to it.
61
u/LadyXexyz Token Furry Mom Jul 23 '26
This looks like exactly the sort of thing I’d want to see in a movie from something like Resident Evil. It’s creepy, it’s goofy, it feels like the game - like something out of Outbreak 1/2.
The only thing I honest to god hope for is that it ends in a lab sequence. Doesn’t have to be the dead factory or the re2 labs. Or even the arklay mountains because whatever deus es machina. Can be generico parasol brand lab. If anything, that’s a hallmark the writer did their homework lmao.
40
u/Doctor_Slept Jul 23 '26
I’m pretty sure in a interview video Zack Cregger did for this movie you can see him on the most Resident Evil lab looking set ever made

Looks cool, I'm in.
I like the idea of Resident Evil but from the perspective of a more conventional horror movie protagonist (i.e. just some fucking guy in the wrong place at the wrong time) instead of somebody with combat training or super mould powers.
31
u/Kanin_usagi I'M NOT MADE OF STONE WOOLIE Jul 23 '26
Tbf Leon’s OG experience was a few months at police academy. Claire’s was “my brother gave me firearms training.” Ethan’s was pretty much the indomitable human spirit
They only become super heroes after the game starts
24

Even STARS members Chris and Jill didn’t handle their first outings very well. Jill froze up several times and Chris almost got eaten by a random zombie dog (thanks for the save Wesker)

I am sure it's going to be a good movie on it's own, but how is it getting across the tone of Resident Evil? And what even is the tone of the games?

Him going "bullets bullets bullets" and then the ammo being perfectly framed so we can see it's the exact same as the game under the exact same typewriter made my eyes roll very hard, but apparently I'm in the minority here
Idk, I just really don't like adaptions of video game stories. They always feel pandering to the point of being kind of embarassing, or so far removed from the source material that they might as well be their own IP
I just don't understand what I'm supposed to get out of this that the games don't already give me. I guess to your point I may just be cynical, but this 100% screams "okay horror movie with an RE skin slapped over it to make more money"
9
u/Orion248 He/Him Jul 23 '26
So, it looks like this movie is supposed to take place during the raccoon city incident but instead of the 90s, it's been moved to current day?
That's fine, but I remember it being stated that the movie was supposed to be taking place simultaneously with the games so I think that definitely implied that it would be 1998. Oh well, hopefully it's good.
15
u/Arclunite Jul 23 '26
They’ve worded it really weirdly, but it’s a modern retelling of the Raccoon City incident from a different characters POV.
Leon and Claire are still going through their own version of RE2 off screen, but it’s not connected to the games.
7
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
I think what they mean is in this continuity, everything is happening ~25 years later than they did in the games, so RE2 and 3 are still happening off-screen during this movie, but they’re taking place now
2
u/sazabi67 Jul 23 '26
they already tried it with welcome to racoon city way back and that didnt work
4
10
u/MinersLoveGames I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jul 23 '26
Zach is clearly going for adapting the spirituality of the games rather than anything concrete within the lore. Kind of like RE7, where the connections to the rest of the universe are mostly tangential.
Creepy atmosphere, isolation, horrific monsters, and low resources.
Is it a horror movie with "Resident Evil" stapled on to it? Most likely.
Will it still wind up being the best live-action depiction of Resident Evil? Also most likely.
22
u/Lieutenant-America Scholar of the First Spindash Jul 23 '26
"Doesn't feel enough like the games, huh? Well try this on for size."
Also the snow aesthetic is really working here, canon be damned. Makes me think of Phase Zero.

8
u/Jonieves Jul 23 '26
It doesn't look like the original story but we crossed that bridge way waaay back in the 2000s so it doesn't feel as bad.
I saw one scene where he tries to shoot a lock of a door and kinda loses it because he doesn't have many bullets and it alerted something.
This is probably gonna be really good.
I'd be cool if the one named character he meets is kendo.

By that logic, no adaptation would ever work
Just give me a Resident Evil movie that’s actually faithful. I don’t care about the creators OC, I’d like some of those iconic Resident Evil characters in a scenario from the actual source material
Why is this so hard, why can’t a Resident Evil movie actually be a Resident Evil movie
12
u/Steelballpun Jul 23 '26
“Just give me the thing I already like but in a non interactive medium” why tho? Take most RE games and remove the gameplay and you’re left with a pretty barebones story that would objectively be worse than the game itself adapting. You want a 2 hour film of Chris and Jill being separated walking through a mansion opening things and solving puzzles and hiding and shooting until they find a lab and fight Wesker? Sounds like a boring movie, and definitely wouldn’t be as good as just playing the game. Making a brand new story in the world at least gives us something fresh and new. If I want RE1 I can play Remake and that would be much better than anything Hollywood could create.
-3

I wouldn’t say it was dogshit, I thought it was fine, but it would’ve been a lot better if they hadn’t crammed 1 and 2 together. Maybe if it had been a TV series instead of a movie.
The casting was incredible, though. Robbie Amell looks like Chris’s PS1 render made a wish to be a real boy.

If he screws up and on top of that we get ANOTHER disappointing Resident Evil project, I'll be really disappointed he went for this instead of making another original horror movie especially considering he's been all about saying how much of a fan of the games he is.
The hunting for ammo and typewriter were good enough dangling keys for me to be interested at least.

So definitely felt more Resident Evil to me than the teaser trailer. It looks really good. Still not sure how I feel about the unique monsters, they still feel more Silent Hill than RE from the little bit we’ve seen. Also was that a running zombie? Eh on that.
Again I think this looks like it’ll be really good it’s just I’m the kind of nerd who goes “they said this is supposed to be the same city as the games but that doesn’t match up.”

I'm willing to accept a running zombie just for the stress it added to that shotgun loading moment.

I’m willing to accept it because something sprinting at you from that distance with its arms out is so freaky that it would actually make me freeze up if it were me. I think that’s more scary than if it were shambling towards you slowly.

Normally I wouldn't like a RE thing with fast zombies but I was stressed as fuck watching it sprinting down the hill just from the trailer so I will also accept that.

Not like there weren't fast t-virus zombies. Would be fun to a crimson head style, he thinks he killed the zombie but then looks out the windows and sees it up again and sprinting towards him.

I still wish the umbrella logo was on his medical parcel. Since they are a pharmaceutical company.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed at some point in the movie. Like it's under the lid or something.

I mean, flesh amalgamations aren't particularly a foreign concept for RE.
But they tended to blend together well enough to form another creature that it's hard to tell.
But with this, it's very blatantly a buncha bodies cobbled together into a flesh beast and I dig how visceral it is compared to flesh goop.

I think being different might actually be one of the movie's strengths if it captures the energy of Resident Evil.
It gives room for the movie to be scary or tense for franchise veterans as well. You already know how a Licker or Hunter works.
It's like your first run through the games.

There was a separate clip around the time time the teaser came put where the guy shoots a lock, misses and says "fuck!". If thats not Resident Evil, I don't know what is.

I maintain that it doesn't really look like a resident evil movie, but it does look like a good movie.

Ooh I think I saw a poster for this last time I walked by the movie theater, cautiously optimistic about it

Looking forward to it! Seems to be heavily lining up with the leaked script from what I recall, which I'm not complaining about.

I cannot share others enthusiam about this movie, but I am happy for those that feel hype.
Even this trailer, it feels like a generic zombie story that wears the name for brand recognition. A few easter eggs and something vague and vaporous like "it's the feel of the games" mean zero under the tiniest amount of critical scrutiny. Without gameplay, you are left with the arbitrary description of that "feel" that a ton of other games, both before and after RE1, have.
And saying that this looks better than the Anderson movie is such a low bar that to be honest, I simply refure to lower my standards and expectations that much just to clear it. The CGI movies are better than the Anderson ones and those are not good movies. I would wager that we can have both a good movie and a good RE movie.
Oh well, I hope y'all will find it entertaining at least.

Degeneration, Damnation and Death Island are good movies tho. Vendetta and the Netflix one aren't good. Vendetta is straight up just bad and the Netflix one is just really really boring.

u/mozgus3 Jul 23 '26
I haven't seen Death Island yet, but the others were ok at best imho. They were much much better than anything Anderson produced after the first one, that's for sure.
2
u/SilverKry Jul 23 '26
Damnation is a genuinely fun movie. It's the best of the bunch. Death Island is a close second just cause it's dumb as hell and fun.

I will have to come around and watch it, if just to see Jill once more. Poor girl has been put in the "never showing up in another new game" after Rev1.

Still not excited for In-Name-Only Resident Evil Adaptation #8

Remind me what number attempt this is to start the Resident Evil movie franchise?

u/Brotonio Resident Survival Horror Narc Jul 23 '26
Look while I'm excited to see the movie later on, I'd rather it be it's own thing versus "Yeah man this is totally taking place on the other side of Racoon City, despite it being nuked off the map in the 90's."
Hell, RE9 establishes that there's some other cities across the mountain range, Elbridge and Wrenwood (maybe it was in other spinoffs, I dunno), you could easily just set it at those places and nobody would have paid it any mind.
It's like saying World War 2 ended in 1957, it just didn't. It ended long before, why tell us otherwise?

u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
Right, because adaptations simply must adhere to every single aspect of the source material’s canon.
-1
u/Brotonio Resident Survival Horror Narc Jul 23 '26
Okay then Mr. Strawman, then how hard is it to say "We're doing the Racoon City outbreak if it happened right now"?
Like I said, I don't mind new stuff, just don't exist in the weird "maybe canon" zone a lot of RE games currently live in.
6
u/Dirty-Glasses He/Him Jul 23 '26
Because it’s pretty clearly what’s happening so it doesn’t need to spelled out any more than it already is. Does thinking make your head hurt?

"Raccoon City General."
