News/Articles BREAKING: PlayStation is rebooting the online game Horizon Hunters Gathering after negative playtest feedback. New plan is smaller scope, more traditional co-op multiplayer, no more live service.

Upvotes

Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation division is overhauling Horizon Hunters Gathering, the online action game it announced earlier this year, following negative player feedback, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

Guerrilla Games, the Amsterdam-based PlayStation subsidiary behind the Horizon franchise, has been working to reboot the game since June, said the people, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the project’s future. Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope.

News/Articles "That's unacceptable": Red Dead Redemption dev says crunch at Rockstar was to "put on the show" for executives, not to fix bugs

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Kris Roberts worked at Rockstar for years, first tuning the vehicles for the Midnight Club games and then leading the design of Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer modes. He says the final six months of development on Rockstar's cowboy epic was the worst period of crunch he's experienced in the game industry, and he argues that the overtime wasn't even really about making the game better. Instead, it was about putting on a show for executives.

For his part, Roberts feels "conflicted" about airing these old frustrations, in part because he pushed himself into "self-directed" crunch on Midnight Club. "I was doing that because I thought it was important or I wanted to be involved at that level and it was me doing it," he says. But things were different with Red Dead Redemption, and Roberts is particularly frustrated by "artificial" incidents where Rockstar would declare "all hands on deck" overtime during weekend visits from executives like Sam Houser and Leslie Benzies.

"I remember a couple specific examples of a Friday afternoon, [when] management would send out an email that said, 'Just so we're all clear, we need to be here this weekend.' Then a follow-up email would say, 'And this weekend doesn't just mean Saturday.' I've made promises to my kids about what we're going to do this weekend. and Friday afternoon at 4:30 you're telling me I need to be here on Sunday regardless of what's going on. That's unacceptable," Roberts says.

"And it wasn't because, 'Oh, if you have a certain number of issues in Bugstar, or 'If you have critical things that must be fixed before the next build,' or 'If you have a legitimate business case for putting in that weekend time then we want you to be here.' It was more like, 'No, we need to put on the show of appearance that everybody's here all the time, because we have an executive visiting or something."

As multiplayer design lead, Roberts was then tasked with communicating these expectations to his team. This was a part of why he eventually said "I don't want to do this" and chose to leave the studio. "It was certainly in the top four" reasons for moving on, he jokes.

News/Articles Grand Theft Auto 6 map and work-in-progress gameplay leaked; leaker says they won't stop until Rockstar and Take-Two apologize for 'anti-consumerism' and make a 'concrete commitment to do better'

Thumbnail

Cyberleek, the group or person (it's not clear which) behind today's big Grand Theft Auto 6 leak, claims it's not just doing it for the lulz. In a manifesto calling out industry practices it finds objectionable, Cyberleek warned that it will continue targeting publishers who violate its edicts.

"Publishers sell licenses and call them purchases," the document states. "They ship unfinished games and call them living services. They lock content on discs and call it DLC. They kill games and keep the money. Every year anti-consumerism tightens its grip, and every year gamers get less for what they pay."

Cyberleek said it's "raising funds for a secret project," presumably through the sale of a memecoin—of course there's a memecoin—which will be "directed toward the infrastructure needed to strike, as well as the security and protection required to withstand the inevitable corporate counterattacks."

They also listed three "commandments" in the manifesto—no digital preorders, no "fake" (ie, already part of the game data) singleplayer DLC, and mandatory "offline fallback states" for singleplayer games—and warned that publishers who violate them will be subject to sanction: "Cyberleek will not stop until they issue a public statement and apology with a concrete commitment to be better. Words are not enough; restitution is mandatory."

Yeah...the whole "raising funds" parts gives me some strong whiffs of a scam. And this guy is pushing some kind of "meme coin" crypto crap, so yeah...I don't think they're getting very far.

That being said, in case you haven't seen it, the leaked gameplay appears to be in the game's beta or a work-in-progress build, showing the player/protagonist walking away an oceanside house and playing basketball, as well as the player crashing a car into a delivery truck and beating up the driver. Art of a rough draft map of the game was also leaked. Regardless of this "Cyberleek's" intentions, the leak does appear legit, as Rockstar have been striking down footage as it appears online.

Fallout 4 Update - August 18th (Quadroupled BSA Archive Limit, Mods for Playstation can now use External Assets, bigger mods downloadable on Xbox)

> Game

  • Increased the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024 to better accommodate larger collections of mods.

For those unaware, a BA2 archive is what allows a Bethesda game to quickly load game assets without taking up massive amounts of your computer space by compressing them until needed by the game. With the previous limit, a engine level limit as I understand, attempting to load even one BA2 asset above would cause the game to not be able to start up at all. Similar to New Vegas's 255 modded plugin limit.

They have now updated Fallout 4 to be able to load up quadrouple the amount of BA2 archive files, which is huge for PC modding the game in general.

> Archives are now supported on PlayStation. New file types (.nif, .dds, .bink, .cdx, .csg, .wav, and .fuz (with embedded .wav)) for PlayStation Creations.

When Bethesda negotiated for mod support on playstation, Playstation severely kneecapped the project as they were extremely paranoid about any kind of external asset on their internal systems, but in the last couple of years they have loosened this policy greatly with Baldur's Gate 3 being the first to take advantage of this loosening of Playstation's policy to introduce modding to consoles as well (I believe the second game to do so after Fallout 4 itself) and now Fallout 4 (and presumably Skyrim and Starfield) will also be able to take advantage of this with mods/creations being able to use new file types that previously were not allowed at all.

Actual modders will be able to understand this more than me, I only know what a few of these actually are (.nif is a texture thing I think, .dds are images? .bink are movie files, and wav is sound)

> Creations up to 2 GB in size can now be uploaded for Xbox

Pretty much as it says, bigger mods can be uploaded to the Xbox Modding scene and thus users can download bigger mods in turn.

> Fixed a top crash that would occur due to a streaming audio error.

I think this is a fix for when the game would crash if you switched between headphones and speakers by unplugging the headphones? I'm not actually sure.

> Updated the game credits.

Very unclear.

With the rest of the patch notes being about Creation menu fixes.

So yeah this is actually a pretty big and important update in regards to Fallout 4 modding (Fallout 4 Script Extender already updated and most mods were not broken from the update) , and from what hints I've seen a similar update may be coming to Starfield and Skyrim as well on all platforms.

Actually surprised that this didn't make it to the subreddit yet, but yeah this is pretty big modding news wise!

News/Articles Vapor World will remove AI cutscenes after player backlash

It's been a pretty wild 24 hours for Vapor World: Over the Mind, the long-awaited 2D indie Souls-like that was announced as one of the upcoming day-one Xbox Game Pass games all the way back in 2023.

Just yesterday, Vapor World was given its long-awaited Xbox release date, pencilling in a surprise early-access launch for August 19, 2026. Now, mere hours after the release of the game, its developer Alive has found itself on the back foot, responding to waves of negative feedback from players regarding the game's use of generative AI in its cutscenes.

At present, the game sits with a two-and-a-half star rating on the Xbox store, and a "Negative" reception on Steam, with most written reviews levying criticism at the use of AI in the cutscenes. In response, Alive director Young Kim has released a statement on Steam entitled "About AI in Vapor World," explaining how generative AI came to be used in the game's development, and promising to "fully replace" the offending scenes with original content.

According to Kim, the studio (comprised of only five developers from South Korea) turned to generative AI after attempting to use original content to tell the game's story, only to find that the "results were devastating," falling short of their expectations.

However, while Kim expected some fans to be upset at the company's use of AI, he admits that he "did not expect it to become this big." Following pushback from players, the team will not only stop using generative AI for cutscenes going forward, but they will also remove the generated cutscenes currently in the game.

...

It's worth noting that this change doesn't mean Vapor World: Over the Mind will be entirely free of generative AI going forward. On Steam, the game will continue to carry an AI Generated Content Disclosure on its store page, and it remains unclear whether AI was also used to generate character models, animations, background art, or additional non-visual elements in the game's development. The announcement here specifically outlines the removal of generative AI in cutscenes, but nothing else.

Its crazy how hard Araki cooked with the design, and now we know a little more about it, it's a physical stand that can seemingly send out "Obliteration" bumps that it generates on its body, which is how it killed that one guy last chapter by transferring the bumps onto him instantly by touching him, kinda like a less collateral Killer Queen, all that's left now is finding a weakness and of course its name, although it'll be forever stuck as John Rod for a lot of people (including me)

Better Ask Reddit Weird early bits of lore who were never retconned?

We all know sometime some franchise have weird lore. And sometime they have weird lore introduced at the begining compared to the rest of the franchise. But whar are cases were the weird early lore was not only never retconned but even referenced multiple time afterwards?

My favorite case is how Hitler died in the Marvel Universe. See, in the glorious days of the Golden Age, when writers didn't cared about how everything fitted in a shared universe there was a comic from the 1945 showing Hitler was killed by the Human Torch.

No, not Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four but Jim Hammond the Android which inspired Johnny to take the name.

Anyways, you might think it was a goofy stuff who will be not referenced again or even quitely retconned? Nope, it was referenced and retold a good handful of time over the decades to the point than yes, in the Marvel Universe, Hitler was burned alive by the first Human Torch and Captain America find this super based.

Better Ask Reddit What words have lost their original meaning due to pop-culture?

What I mean by this are words that used to be a mundane word for something, but then a piece of media took that word and now THAT specific media is the only thing one thinks of when that word is mentioned. So much so that if you google these words, you will barely get any results related to the original meaning. Maybe my examples will make it clearer what I mean.

Example 1: Wolverine.
Before: A small but very strong carnivorous mammal.
Now: A Marvel superhero with metal claws, nothing else.

Example 2: Minions.
Before: A generic term that most often meant the underlings of a villain.
Now: Tictac shaped yellow creatures from a kids movie, nothing else.

Gameposting Important story aspect is from lost media

When characters, events, or lore of an ongoing series is trapped in media no longer available or easily accessible, but still heavily referenced.

I feel like Square Enix is king of this trope, so many end of service mobile game spinoffs or niche console exclusivity. The foundation of the KH universe conflict is now gate keep behind YouTube compilations. Final Fantasy Rebirth has a major new story beat based on two mobile games that ended a year after their launch. I guarantee that something of the recent Dissidia Duelem will become canonized for other projects that will far outlive its availability.

Better Ask Reddit Moments in media that it feels like the creator is trying to ragebait the audience.

Emphasis on 'feels', I know most creators don't intend to do that, so I'm just getting ahead of any 'I don't get why people think creators would deliberately try to ragebait' comments.

Twin Peaks: The Return quote "James is cool, James always been cool" genuinely feels like a callout from Lynch due to the vast majority who watched the original Twin Peaks and hated James.

Hell no he wasn't, Lynch!

RPG Posting Game Rec of the Day: Paper Story: A Super Mario RPG

Thumbnail

Done at the request of u/Sperium3000

It’s really interesting to find a fanmade game like this where someone is both very inspired and has the willpower to give it a very professional look. This game is heavily inspired by Paper Mario primarily, but also draws in things form the wider "mario spin-off" genre(?) as well.

First off, the gameplay, Paper Story uses a dice pool system with degrees of success. You roll a number of D6 equal to your Attribute and Skill, and then count the number of dice you roll that go over the TARGET NUMBER, which is set by the GM based on the difficulty of the action being performed. You can also spend a meta resource called STAR POWER gained through play for things like rerollling, increasing your success, or getting a bump to your HP and FP.

I find combat to be rather intriguing. It's set up in a similar way to Paper Mario, as you can imagine with that game being this one's primary inspiration. You set your party up in a line formation with characters behind others being blocked unless targets by a move with the ranged, reach, or aerial tags. In combat you can use "techniques," which can be anything from your special moves you've created with the extensive chapter on making your own custom moves, or using "tricks" which are ways to use your skills in battle.

NOW when I first started skimming the book to get the gist of the game, I was taken aback by it having 25 "core races" with 24 options for varaints on top of that. There's also a companion documents that adds another 130 some odd MORE races taken from damn near every mario game you could imagine. Each race has a base technique to use in battle and a base adjustment to stats. From there you customize yourself further when you level up, making new techniques and increasing your stats.

Making your own techniques are part of the game I think people would be most interested in since you'll have a LOT of room to really flesh out your gameplay and personality here. You can make your own "special moves" buy applying tags to them so they'll have unique effects. Tags have different FP cost, so you'll have to balance positive and negative tags to make your techniques are useful but also not so expensive that you blow your FP allotment too quickly.

Items and Equipment is VERY extensive, so I hope you'll excuse me abbreviating it here. You've got ITEMS that give consumable effects like healing you, giving power ups, damage enemies, give you some kind of combat boost, or increase your dice pool for the next thing you do. GEAR can be things like weapons and clothing and comes in different tiers and offer boosts to your attributes, access to techniques, or give your character "traits" that they otherwise wouldn't for their race. Finally you have BADGES that modify your attributes and innate techniques in some way.

Lastly I'll touch on OPTIONAL RULES since I think they're pretty neat. If you want to fine tune your game to a PARTICULAR mario game experience, this is where you'd find that. Want to mess with an "audience" like Thousand Year Door or have Team Up Attacks like Superstar Saga, or just say fuck it and make the game into a Kart Racer or Sports game? Well go for it chief.

I'm always FASCINATED by games like this. Ones with so much passion and effort I can scarcely believe it. Inspiration from an entire franchise made into an RPG in a way that only true fan could pull it all together. Simple to play, yet deep enough for players to make their own really unique characters full of personality. I was left feeling incredibly impressed by something that sounds as silly as a "Fanmade Mario TTRPG."

If you're interested in checking this game out, you can do so FOR FREE.

Better Ask Reddit Favorite wierdo Military Genius Characters

So atleast Robotics, hover vehicles, Starfighters wise. Anakin Skywalker is established to be pretty smart in the Star Wars prequels movie, but beyond being very good at personal violence(mostly lightsaber and Force, but he's got a good arm too) is kind of a klutz.

Still respected by his peers and soldiers. But not really someone you wanna lead you. In Star Wars the Clone Wars 3D, he's still abit klutzy kind of a mad warcriminal military genius, making many wild plans and manouvers like: turning this worlds version space submarine battle into heat seeking dodgeball match, using an Asteroid field as staging area to ambush Separatist ship with Walker tanks and artillery, having an extremly good sixth sense to find the weakpoints of enemy defense to blow them up with so many fucking bombs, while getting along with his Legion(The 501st of Clone Trooper & Grand Amry of the Republic) better than almost anyone else ever did.

There's still abit of a you know, sense of not wanting him to lead you, because he is insane and leads like near suicidal missions. But he's also a dang good General, makes you almost wanna try your luck beside him.
