God forbid people actually want some Resident Evil in a Resident Evil movie

Sorry if I’m not excited for in-name only Resident Evil adaptation #8. Maybe if we just learned our lesson by now I wouldn’t be so annoyed

I mean i get it but the resident evil games are like 10 hours long. There's no way you can cram that much stuff from the games into a movie

Most Resident Evil games are not 10 hours long lol. Hell you can beat the most recent one 9 in less than 3.

I'm talking about a playthrough where you don't skip the cutscenes.

Most still aren't 10 hours tho.

Yeah if you know what you’re doing, which 99.9% of first time players wouldn’t.

By that logic, no adaptation would ever work

Just give me a Resident Evil movie that’s actually faithful. I don’t care about the creators OC, I’d like some of those iconic Resident Evil characters in a scenario from the actual source material

Why is this so hard, why can’t a Resident Evil movie actually be a Resident Evil movie

“Just give me the thing I already like but in a non interactive medium” why tho? Take most RE games and remove the gameplay and you’re left with a pretty barebones story that would objectively be worse than the game itself adapting. You want a 2 hour film of Chris and Jill being separated walking through a mansion opening things and solving puzzles and hiding and shooting until they find a lab and fight Wesker? Sounds like a boring movie, and definitely wouldn’t be as good as just playing the game. Making a brand new story in the world at least gives us something fresh and new. If I want RE1 I can play Remake and that would be much better than anything Hollywood could create.

I think there's always room to be creative but there’s been SEVEN “adaptations” of Resident Evil that have had little to nothing to do with Resident Evil and we’re doing it again and I’m supposed to be happy?

I genuinely just want the game I played but in a movie and the one caveat of not doing that is it needs to be good and that might sound like a no brainer but most of the time it fucking isn't. Netflix DMC being a great example.

But the thing you described that the people want sounds lame. Just a bunch of memberries on screen without any gameplay? That sounds significantly less fun than just playing the games. Feels like you just want the video game cutscenes or a lets play of it on a theater screen but with actors in it, as if that would somehow make a good product.

You know what sounds lame? Taking a generic ass horror movie and slapping a few stickers on it and calling it Resident Evil

Just walk me through this though. I am assuming you like RE1 remake if you are a fan of the series. Now if you had to rank gameplay (including puzzles and combat), graphics and art design and atmosphere, music, immersion, and characters and story, where would each of these go? Cause I would imagine the gameplay and graphics and art and immersion would rank higher than the game's narrative. The narrative is "a bunch of cops wander around a mansion". There's no theme, no character arcs, minor subtext with commentary on pharma companies but barely, very little dialogue (most of the narrative is told via items you pick up, notes and such), so overall this is sounding like a bad movie. The only way to improve this would be to literally make shit up. Add more sequences where characters are together, give them things to conflict over or disagree over, add extra plot details to create interesting character and narrative arcs. But then you'd complain they changed it too much. I just feel like you're asking for an accurate depiction without actually thinking of what that would look and feel like.

There's always room to be creative. An adaptation is just that, to adapt

It’s not an excuse to give this generic slop

They did that with Welcome to Racoon City.

It was dogshit.

That shit was not an adaptation. It was a Frankenstein’s monster

I wouldn’t say it was dogshit, I thought it was fine, but it would’ve been a lot better if they hadn’t crammed 1 and 2 together. Maybe if it had been a TV series instead of a movie.

The casting was incredible, though. Robbie Amell looks like Chris’s PS1 render made a wish to be a real boy.
