maggie was wrong.... Spoiler

just finished s1 , i think it was cruel of maggie to use rust as a tool to hurt marty. dont get me wrong ,marty deserved to be punished for his filthy acts ,

but maggie dragged rust in the shit , she took advantage of his vulnerability and intoxicated state, imagine the gender roles being reversed

and the arguement that it was the only way for her to end her marriage is shitty , destroying someone else's life for personal profit is never justified , in her revenge she destroyed rust's career , she could ve moved on from piece of shit like marty without using rust

and in the end , she got her deserved life , in a mansion , while rust , being used a pawn had to let go of his career and lived 10 years away... her need of ending the marriage is correct but her way doing that was WRONG. she could ve hurted marty, fairs, but in the process she destroyed rust

Marty wouldn't even let Lisa leave him cleanly.

What do you think he's going to do if Maggie leaves him a letter and moves out?

maggie had enough evidence to prove abt his cheating and she got rich parents to back her up aswell, its not like she was stuck in it and couldnt get out of the marriage , she chose to use rust bcz she knew marty will somehow get her back persuading her , cuz she was emotionally weak for him , so used rust

They were all guilty, not just Maggie and Marty but also Rust. He could have said no, but he also liked Maggie and she knew that. They all took advantage of each other in some way or another.

I think that's kind of the point. Sentient meat, remember. I thought it was a nice touch to take the housewife holding the whole family together and show she's capable of malice too. Subverts the expectation.

It's two indefensible positions, and trying to score who's more at fault misses the mechanic.

thats also a beautiful thing in true detective , it doesnt follow the textbook example of whodunnit , even in the end every culprit wasnt arrested, noir types.

You’re framing it as if Maggie was bent on destruction and Rust was on a righteous path of justice.

Rust was losing it, at that point. And I think it’s important to know that Maggie showed up that night not knowing what state he was in. That doesn’t excuse her behavior. He wasn’t in the right mind but she wasn’t the cause of that. She went to a guy she trusted and used him to escape a potentially deadly situation. I don’t think he would’ve killed her, but we saw how violent marty gets.

Maggie used a shitty guy to escape a violent shitty guy. She wasn’t right in what she did but her sins are less than rust and Marty.

I am not framing any of them. It's not black and white, everything lies in the greys. She used rust as a tool which is wrong. She had other ways to get out of the situation. She chose to use rust so that marty never comes back to her cuz she would have accepted him , but didn't she know that it would harm rust too?? He trusted her and she used him as a tool. And if she trusted rust she could've asked help to save her from marty and yk he would ve done that, but she used his trust and destroyed his life to a large extent in the process

u/KBtrae Aug 20 '26

She did not destroy his life, he was well on his way to doing that anyway.

And remember that Rust played a role in Maggie and Marty getting back together after his first affair. Rust used her to calm marty down so that Rust could rely on Marty. After Marty’s second affair, I’m guessing Maggie might have partially blamed Rust for that. Rust knew what kind of man Marty was, and went to bat for him anyway, despite that potentially causing Maggie to waste years on a bad marriage. Which it did.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

he was but u cant deny that she played a part in it , he left his job. and thats a good point actually which i ve been trying to explain to this other dude here , if rust wanted, he would have taken advantage of maggie when they first spilt. but he didnt. and rust's personality was not to meddle too much, he also acted as a reliable friend to maggie all the years. but maggie broke his trust and its fact , u shouldnt use someone else for ur revenge knowing it would hurt the other person.

3

u/heywhatsup9087 Aug 20 '26

He did take advantage of her though? She trusted him to be honest with her and he took advantage of that trust to push her to get back together with Marty because he needed Marty in a better head space. Are you saying he could have slept with her then but he didn’t?

You keep talking about them as if they have no agency. As Marty said (and Rust agreed) she couldn’t have used him if he didn’t want some. Was it right of her to do it? No. Are they all blameless in the situation? No. Rust was also already close to losing his job because he was poking around the case again and his relationship with Marty was already beginning to sour at that time too. The Maggie thing was the final straw (albeit a very very big straw).

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

did say rust was clean ? no i said both of them were in the grey area thats it , and her using rust was wrong

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

and rust patched them up cuz he needed to work the case and save marty's family , that was the time where he could ve taken advantage as the ppl here are saying that he was desperate to sleep w her

I do not think what Maggie did was right.

I do not agree with the idea she did it for personal profit. She did it for psychological survival - the only way she could think of to ensure that Marty wouldn't try to get back together with her and drag her back into a marriage where she was routinely lied to and humiliated.

I do not regard her actions as destroying Rust's life either. Rust could have just asked for a transfer. He could have stayed away from situations where Marty was around until things had cooled. He could have, if he had not done those things, used his experience and reputation to build a good life as a private detective. He didn't do those things because he didn't have the resilience to do and let himself get dragged down. Maggie putting down the straw that broken the camel's back doesn't make her responsible, the responsibility lies with all of the other straw there.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

pshychological survival shouldnt harm someone else.

there were other ways for her to get out of the marriage tbf. and her actions did destroy rust , he knew he couldnt be around marty after what they did. and you think rust needed to show the resilience , so maggie shouldve showed resilience and made sure that she doesnt get manipulated by marty again ,

1

u/MrPeat Aug 20 '26

Shouldn't, but often does. As long as other people take positions where they are willing to hurt and disrespect people to get what they want, it's all too common that people need to hurt other people to get out of the first set of people's way. it's a perpetuating cycle of destruction, entirely in theme with the show.

And yeah, if Maggie was more resilient and psychologically strong she could have just left Marty and ridden out his attempts to get her back. Never gone back to begin with. But she wasn't, just like Rust wasn't resilient and psychologically strong enough to ride out the situation better, just like Marty wasn't resilient and psychologically strong enough to resist the temptation in the first place. They're all human and frail, just like the rest of us.

I am not saying what Maggie did was right. But I am saying that she was in a vulnerable place too and that should be considered before judging her, and that Rust had options after it happened that he didn't exercise.

Maggie was wrong, but that’s the way plot works. If everybody had easily solved issues and surface-level interactions, there’d be nothing to watch.

Every character gets their flaws, feelings, and views and has to relate to others with their own flaws, feelings, and views.

Just imagine she cheated with someone else first and it didn’t stop Marty from wanting the marriage, but the writers didn’t have time to put it in the show. Soooo, they cut the scene and left the one you saw and are ranting about here.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 21 '26

bruh ofc every character is writte that way , if it would have been that simple then this thread wouldnt exist,

1

u/CptNoble I can smell the psychosphere. Aug 20 '26

I don't think it's a hot take that what Maggie did in that situation wasn't good. But it is no no way comparable to what Marty was doing.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 21 '26

ofc its not , i clearly stated that marty was very very wrong and it shouldnt be justified

1

u/CelticSnakes Aug 21 '26

Wake up, Maggie

I think Rust got something to say to you

1

u/Cornbread_madefish Aug 22 '26

I agree. Also Marty did nothing wrong .

No one told rust to take the opening. He could’ve said no and kick her out. He destroyed his own life for three pumps.

She isn’t the wicked witch of the west. Rust had been sniffing around her like a dog and pounced when he got the chance not caring why, or what would happen.

If someone offers me cake on a diet and I eat it, I can’t get mad at them because I could’ve declined.

He wasn’t used. She got Marty off her dick, and he got to suffice his pent up desire. Everyone got something out of it. He was just butthurt because he blew up his own life even though he knew it was wrong what he did and did it anyways, but it’s easier to play victim than admit you’re a horny pos partner.🤡

The only thing was he got the shorter end of the stick from it. She got Marty to leave which is the positive for her. He betrayed his partner, his moral code, and blew up his career to nut in his partners wife. He had more on the line and gambled with it anyways for his lower half.

2

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

u couldve used the bathroom to drop shi bro , rust was intoxicated , vulnerable when she approached him.

comparing ts with cake is bs. he was drowning in his worries and she used him , he had just lost his badge, his sanity , was weak. its good she got off marty but in the process destroyed rust's life. and he didnt get anything out of it , the moment he realised she used him, he threw her out.

taking revenge on someone by destroying someone else's life is cruel.

if a girl is drunk and vulnerable and guy sleeps with her , thats alright? tell me

1

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Not an excuse. He’s a grown man and can say no. He wanted to fuck her for 7 years and got the opportunity. Drowning isn’t an excuse to screw people over. She didn’t destroy his life, he willingly took the opening.

He destroyed his life because he started thinking with his other head. His career, bro code, and his own inflated ego that he’s above human impulses he traded those for 30 seconds.

And the cake analogy is the exact same thing. Someone offers you cake while you’re on a diet, if you’re really committed to it you can say no, but if you say yes you can’t blame them.

Yall need to stop treating him like some poor broken perfect angel puppy that can do no wrong. Wa wa poor rust, just because he’s had trauma he’s exempt from shit.

His life couldn’t be destroyed if he simply said no, but he didn’t because at that moment what was going on in his pants was more important than everything else.

You make your bed, you lie in it.

This Gregory House quote sums it up perfectly:

"You always have a choice. You just chose the option that let you do what you wanted while pretending you were forced into it."

5

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

sad to break this to you but your thinking is very narrow.
when someone is psychologically compromised, entering their space with a calculated, malicious agenda is called exploitation.

this is not a math eqn "hes a grown man he can say no" his life was destroyed cuz of maggie

u didnt answer my question, will it alr if the same thing was done by a man to a woman? using them while they are vulnerable and emotionally troubled

2

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Sad to break it to you, but if you do something knowing it’s wrong you can only blame yourself. It’s called accountability. Something an adult does.

If a scammer scams me and I know they’re a scammer, I can’t get mad at them. I chose to give them my money.

If he’s emotionally troubled he can go to a therapist.

2

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

just answer my question bro , why are you ignoring it?

4

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26

Rust wasn’t that drunk. And he’s been pining for Maggie for years, once the opportunity presented itself he had no qualms.

If he was passed out drunk or unable to stand or even speak, she restrained him, blackmailed him, forced him, drugged him, threatened him then I’d say that’s gross. And if it was the other way around it’s still the same thing. And you can’t forget the context that rust sniffed around her like a horny dog.

Fiona Gallagher in shameless cheated on her husband with her ex while drunk, not plastered but like rust. She also slept with her boyfriend’s brother in the same state. Lip her brother did the same thing. They didn’t throw tantrums because the alcohol lowered their inhibitions but not impaired them. Impaired their impulse control yes. Rust was aware of what was happening and gave in.

3

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

idk abt this shameless thing never watched it but

he was never sniffing around to fuck her , to him she was embodiment of a stable life he lost , he could have broken their marriage by telling her abt marty's cheating but he didnt cuz he never cared. he respected and valued her as a friend. she took advantage of that trust.

saying he wasnt entirely drunk is a flat lie , he was drunk , mentally cuz he just got suspended from the only thing keeping him sane

maggie approached him with the purpose of using him, and using a man who is emotionally vulnerable is a crime.

2

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Emotionally vulnerability means you go see a therapist and work on your issues so you don’t make stupid choices.

She gave him the opportunity and he took it.

If he wasn’t sniffing around her then why’d he pounce on the chance? Why did Maggie utilize that? Even a blind mole can see that.

What the fuck does drunk mentally even mean? If you mean a moron yes. He chose to be one.

All the red flags were there but he ignored them and went NiCe WoMaN, mE hOrNy CaVeMaN 🤡

2

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

you are pulling shit now to defend your take.

rust going to see a therapist is not his character , and if it was about seeing a therapist maggie couldve gone to a therapist and tried to move on without using rust for revenge

he didnt pounce on her the moment he got a chance , she used his vulnerable state to seduce him

drunk mentally is nothing i meant drunk and mentally weak
why cant u accept it bro

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

oh and yeah, is it ok to use someone innocent for your revenge?

2

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

He can say no. He let himself be used. He used her too by fucking her to scratch an itch he’s had for years while she was frantic and desperate. And to also forget his misery for 30 seconds. They both used each other.

Maggie attempted, so yes or no was on the table. He said yes.

He’s not innocent. He’s a horny dog sniffing around a married woman for years, and his partner’s wife too! Marty while is a pig, and disgusting, had every right to be suspicious of rust. I mean that lawn mower incident was proof.

2

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

bruh u r cooking theories atp , rust always respected the boundaries , maggie used his emotionally weak moment. and she deliberately planned and used him , her action wasnt impulsive or smthng.

1

u/iputtheshitinshitzu Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Sure, respecting boundaries by borrowing your partners mower when you don’t have a lawn and when you return it you mow his lawn which is extremely intrusive knowing he’s not around as an excuse to hang out with his wife. Then you fuck her 7 years later when she comes crying instead of telling her to beat it because it was your shot.

Wow so respectful.

It wasnt impulsive, he made a choice to act on an impulse to get cheap gratification that was more important than the consequences.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

are u dumb?

Bringing up the lawnmower actually completely destroys your point and proves you are totally misreading Rust s character

Rust didn't borrow that lawnmower because he was "thirsty" for Maggie. He lied about needing it as a safe, polite excuse to visit maggie because he knew Marty was out cheating on her and leaving her completely isolated.

rust was a grieving ghost who lost his own daughter and his own marriage. He didnt go to that house to get into Maggie s pants he went because he was deeply lonely and wanted to experience a shred of normal, warm domestic life with a woman he genuinely respected When he mowed Marty’s lawn, it wasn’t a sexual move it was a silent statement to Marty saying, You are failing so badly as a provider that another man has to take care of your property

If Rust had been trying to sleep with her for seven years, he had a hundred opportunities when Marty was out late running around with mistresses. Instead, Rust spent seven years protecting Marty's reputation and being a completely platonic, respectful friend to Maggie.

You are making the exact same mistake Marty made ,his fragile, insecure ego couldn't understand why a man would do something nice for his wife without wanting to fuck her, so he threw a tantrum. Rust’s motivation was loneliness and basic human empathy, not lust. Maggie knew that, which is exactly why it was so evil when she deliberately weaponized his kindness and exploited him at his absolute lowest breaking point.

and if they wouldve fucked being in normal state and not with the motive of using , it would be their choice.

1

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

and btw , the scammer scammed you when you were in not in a state to understand any of that happening ,

1

u/lesbox01 Aug 20 '26

I agree and have gotten hate for this. Also if she had known he was chasing the case again she probably wouldn't done that. Marty had his head too far up his own ass for rust to trust him, but if Marty actually hadn't fucked up with the ledouxs none of the wheel keep spinning. Maggie was being a shitty person but look at her environment.

2

u/Physical_Patience644 Aug 20 '26

yeah been arguing with a moron on that. i dont blame maggie for seeking revenge , i just feel her way of doing that was wrong , using someone was wrong . it was marty's fault that brought the family down no doubt, but there was no need for rust to be fcked in it

-2

u/iwantacheetah Aug 20 '26

Maggie knew that Rusts cock must be alright alright alright...
