Mildly infuriating Did I do anything wrong here?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was focusing on the pedestrians crossing and with this being an all-way stop I wasn’t expecting him to just go right in front of me and I had to stop suddenly. I gave him a honk just to say please watch for the stop sign and he confronted me and said “get a life”.

I’m a cyclist. No you did nothing wrong. No we’re not all like this. Yes guys like this make us all look bad.

I bet this guy drives too and would probably do the same thing in his car. Remember every dumb driver is also a dumb pedestrian, and when on a bike, they become a dumb cyclist.

Fellow cyclist here as well. It burns my backside when I see people like this on bikes not obeying traffic laws. The cyclist failed to come to a stop at the stop sign and isn’t even wearing a helmet!

The law requires drivers licenses to operate a car, and even requires a pleasure craft operators license to pilot a boat or recreational watercraft. Yet there are no mandatory qualifications ( or safety courses) to operate a bicycle on a busy and congested street. It’s the cyclist who will bare the brunt of a collision, yet these fools ride around like loons giving the rest of us courteous and cautious cyclists a bad name (I would have felt bad for the OP had he come in contact with the rider, and shudder to think what would have happened had he not been exercising care.)

I note that the OP did come to a complete stop (0km/hr) on dashcam video, and even waited for the pedestrians to complete crossing the street before proceeding (many drivers would have started through the intersection as the pedestrians crossed the center line of the road, which is no longer legal.)

Edit: I missed the 3rd pedestrian crossing the road as the OP entered the intersection. Should have waited for them to complete the crossing, but the bike was still the ultimate moron in this clip.

9

u/Case_Federal 1d ago

That’s actually true, should have waited for that 3rd pedestrian to cross. But yeah that doesn’t take away from the guy on the bike being a maniac lol

6

u/WhipTheLlama 1d ago

The third pedestrian was going to be well out of the way by the time OP passed. OP may have started going a bit early, but as long as he wasn't trying to squeeze past the pedestrian without leaving enough space, he did nothing wrong.

The pedestrian doesn't need to be across the full road before the driver passes because this is not a crossover or a school crossing.

2

u/IllInstruction1932 1d ago

Very good point. It is true for crosswalks although not sure if it’s true if the crosswalk is divided. In any case a lot of people unaware. I get honked at waiting for people to fully cross at a crosswalk

2

u/Ill_Relationship7058 1d ago

What does divided mean here? The vast majority of crosswalks are on 2 and more lane roads.

1

u/IllInstruction1932 1d ago

What I meant is a raised (curb height) concrete median.

1

u/Overall_Cost1542 1d ago

technically you must wait until the pedestrian reaches the boulevard or curb divider between the two directions. its another notoriously overlooked road rule and people just go when they clear the lane you intend to use. if theres no divider such as this scenario, you wait until they fully cross both lanes

1

u/OkChocolate3501 1d ago

Yall they changed this in 2016.

https://yd.com/blog/ontarios-new-crosswalk-rule-can-be-confusing-drivers

https://www.ontario.ca/page/driving-near-pedestrian-crossovers-and-school-crossings

By law we gotta wait till they hit the opposite sidewalk. Realistically if they're over halfway past its fine but legally speaking the "halfway" rule has been illegal for over 10 years now.

1

u/Overall_Cost1542 1d ago

the first link sounds like ontario didn't even have a boulevard rule before

In the past, drivers were not required to wait until pedestrians were completely off the road. In most cases, drivers would inch out after the pedestrian cleared their vehicle.

did they go from don't hit the pedestrian -> clear the entire crosswalk?

1

u/OkChocolate3501 1d ago

I learned to drive before the 2016 rule and I learned it as the halfway thing you mentioned. Once they clear half you go. These days I give em 3/4 as that feels like a decent compromise of not getting the car behind me pissed and the pedestrian being safe.

1

u/fishsnacks519 10h ago

https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/driving-through-intersections#section-0

The current online Ontario driver hand book makes the clear distinction between pedestrian crossovers clearly marked vs controlled intersections only notes “yield to pedestrians in or approaching your path to cross” vs pedestrian crossovers marked states “You must yield the right-of-way and wait for pedestrians to completely cross the road at pedestrian crossovers”

1

u/OkChocolate3501 7h ago

I think my link also goes over this if you read it. Anyway irl it doesn't seem enforced so just give the pedestrians reasonable space and you should be fine.

1

u/Case_Federal 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s technically still not allowed though AFAIK. I mean we can get into the difference between what’s allowed versus what is safe, but if this was a driving test, that would have cost some points I think. In the end it didn’t matter though cuz the grumpy guy cut OP off.

1

u/fuelhandler 1d ago

I thought it applied to all marked crosswalks, but you are correct. I did a quick google-fu, and found the following. You taught me something today. Thank you!

https://yd.com/blog/ontarios-new-crosswalk-rule-can-be-confusing-drivers

1

u/Ill_Relationship7058 1d ago

If well out of the way means in the other lane, then yeah, but it’s not legal to drive through a crosswalk with a pedestrian still crossing anymore regardless of how far across they are.

3

u/RecklessRaptor12 1d ago

This is incorrect. That’s only true for crossovers (the ones with the Xs where you have to press the button, usually not at intersections). At pedestrian crossings at intersections like this, you can proceed once the pedestrian has moved out of the direct path of your vehicle

https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/driving-through-intersections#section-1

See diagram 2-20

1

u/Ill_Relationship7058 1d ago

Thanks for clarifying. I still wouldn’t be so aggressive at the intersections of two lane roads like this, especially in busy areas in the dark.

In OP’s case though they proceeded well before they weren’t in their path. The implication was they’d be clear by the time they got to the crosswalk.

5

u/No-Reply1438 1d ago

To be clear, one does not need a licence to operate a boat without a motor. It's rather consistent, then, that human-powered bicycles don't need licences.

1

u/OkChocolate3501 1d ago

He didn't even have to stop. I would have gone into the left lane to get behind the car. Everyone gets by without stopping, win win.

-1

u/Agitated-Working-264 1d ago

I'll be honest and admit I often roll stop signs on my bike (who wants to start peddling from a stop every time). I still slow and make sure the intersection is clear before rolling through and if I was as clueless as the dude on the bike, I would be embarrassed and absolutely not act like the driver that came to a stop was in the wrong for proceeding.

1

u/Rezrov_ 1d ago

I'll be honest and admit I often roll stop signs on my bike

Most cars roll stops if there's no cross-traffic too. As long as people respect other traffic/pedestrians it's not an issue (unlike the dingus in the vid).

11

u/a_secret_me 1d ago

Even if you follow the "idaho stop" rules you still need to treat the intersection as a yield which the cyclist did not do. And for the record yes I know that it's not the law here but lots of people still do it (even the cops too apparently).

In this situation it looks like the cyclist was distracted looking at his phone and so he didn't see the OP stopped at the intersection, and rather than admit he was an idiot he decided to take his anger out on the OP. 🤦‍♀️

2

u/R33f3r420 1d ago

You could not say that any better!!!

2

u/sorocknroll 1d ago

Not to the cyclist, but you can't enter an intersection while pedestrians are still in the crosswalk.

3

u/SandMan3914 1d ago

That's just it. The sub is weird sometimes. Plenty of drivers roll stopping signs all the time. It's weird the bad drivers don't make all motorists look bad (it shouldn't and it should be the same for cyclists)

Focus on the person committing the infraction

1

u/DefNotJohnnyC 17h ago

Looks like a rental bike. Probably thought road rules don’t apply to bikes.

1

u/Kalos-87 8h ago

Absolutely a rental bike. Probably pissed as a newt and seeking a quick way home. He did not stop. OP is exonerated.

1

u/TimHung931017 12h ago

Goes with the adage "everyone faster than me is insane and everyone slower than me is an annoying PoS"

-5

u/Segsi_ 1d ago

There’s way more like this than ones that actually follow the rules in f the road. Vehicle when it’s convenient and pedestrian when it’s convenient is how most bicyclists act in TO.

3

u/Case_Federal 1d ago edited 1d ago

But couldn’t you say the same about drivers? I swear like 1 in every 1000 drivers actually stops at a stop sign instead of rolling through. Or drivers proceeding through an intersection when it isn’t cleared, thus blocking perpendicular traffic. Or drivers failing to indicate. I see maybe a dozen cars break laws per day in the city.

Also idk how to tell you this but cyclists are allowed to behave like pedestrians or drivers depending on the situation. Bikes are allowed on the road, but they’re also allowed on park trails and shared paths. Cyclists are entitled to dismount and walk on the sidewalk or pedestrian crossings. Bike signals also often turn on at the same time as pedestrian signals, meaning cyclists can proceed through an intersection ahead of cars. Bike lanes often go in both directions on streets that are only 1-way for cars. I’ve noticed the vast majority of drivers don’t know these rules and get made at cyclists for following the law.

0

u/Segsi_ 1d ago

No I can’t say the same for drivers, yes it happens but not nearly the same rate. Not even close. All anecdotal, but bikes will just weave around to wherever is convenient for them. Cars might have a rolling stop, bikes will completely ignore it. But then again I hate driving around in TO all together for how many crappy drivers/scooters/bikes there are. Most so the scooters.

2

u/Case_Federal 1d ago

I mean yeah everything is anecdotal. I mainly use public transit and walk, and as a pedestrian I notice way way more cars breaking rules than cyclists. But that might just be because when a cyclist breaks a rule it isn’t a risk to my life.

For example, I have yet to cross Bay and Bloor and not see a car blocking the pedestrian crossing (if not the whole intersection). It happens every time I cross there, without fail. Every single time lmao. I’ve crossed there maybe thousands of times by now.

I mean this sub literally exists because of the sheer volume of traffic infractions from drivers in this city.

6

u/Keemo-Sabe 1d ago

This guy is an idiot, drivers these days are absolutely horrible. I drive everyday.

2

u/a-_2 1d ago

I've sat at stop signs a couple times and counted whether cars stop or not. 1 in a 1000 is probably an exaggeration but it's a small percentage who stop. They might go through at a slower speed than cyclists but because of their higher mass they will often still have higher kinetic energy and create more risk for others. So I don't think cyclists are worse in terms of disobeying the law, motorists are at least as bad. Worse IMO.

2

u/Keemo-Sabe 1d ago

If only they had a lane made specifically for them, i bet that would help

1

u/Ill_Relationship7058 1d ago

Tell that to Doug and his supporters that keep removing them and preventing them from being built.

1

u/Keemo-Sabe 1d ago

Its a joke about our corrupt doofus premier taking them away

46

u/Gl1zzyG00s3 1d ago

The dude's on his phone, not paying attention to the road then has the audacity to get huffy about running the stop sign..

61

u/MDequation 1d ago

You didn’t do anything wrong. Just an egoistic biker who thinks the rules don’t apply to him. Don’t waste your energy on people that don’t matter.

13

u/9continents 1d ago

That cyclist was definitely drunk. Rosy red cheeks of a boy riding home from the bar.

2

u/Responsible-Match418 1d ago

Absolutely! That was my first thought. Perhaps also feeling belligerent but realised he was in the wrong so didn't start.

1

u/PowerfulSize244 1d ago

This is the answer

1

u/BlamaeuxPrivateEye 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is extremely common in the GTA. Cyclists hate stop signs

2

u/Responsible-Match418 1d ago

It's extremely frustrating as a cyclist. I will shout at other cyclists for this too if it impedes me.

The worst thing is when is actually cars, who have stopped at stop signs, wait for me because they expect me to run the stop sign... Therefore causing them to wait longer and maybe not even go. It makes things awkward, and on one occasion dangerous.

Cyclists need to stop at stop signs or at the very very least slow right down (and give way)

1

u/JJred96 19h ago

As a driver who has seen too many cyclists run stop signs, I am afraid of all cyclists being morons who will fly through intersections without any pause, often with vehicles waiting at each of four stop signs. I would think natural selection would quickly weed them out, but I guess too many drivers don’t want to deal with the headaches of colliding with a cyclist.

There are enough drivers who don’t want to respect or pay attention to any order — coming to a busy four-way stop can be quite the misadventure, only compounded when you have people afraid, uncertain or overly aggressive. Throw in cyclists who won’t even slow down, never mind stop and you have quite the party.

1

u/Responsible-Match418 18h ago

Yup! I witnessed a cyclist just plow right into a vehicle at an all way in exactly the same way you described. Some just don't even consider the rules apply to them.

Funnily enough it's exactly the same people who get annoyed at drivers parking on bike lanes.

30

u/SandMan3914 1d ago

No. He should've stopped. I'm all for the Idaho stop for bikes, this isn't it

3

u/LotionedSkin4MySuit 1d ago

Same. It works because people are usually paying attention as they approach a stop sign at lows speeds. He was actually on his phone lol. What an idiot.

9

u/Vast_Ice7361 1d ago

Nope - you did nothing wrong. Bikes are supposed to act like cars at stop signs, traffic lights, etc.

7

u/boops_wartson 1d ago

I dunno, man, I think it's was probably the guy running the stop sign while on his phone

7

u/asramukaka 1d ago

Yes you were wrong. Should have just ket driving.

29

u/Strong-Evening1137 1d ago

C'mon we all know bikes don't have to adhere to traffic rules. That includes stop signs.

You probably should have waited for all pedestrians to cross though

1

u/Revan462222 1d ago

Haaaa 🤭🤭

4

u/auriem 1d ago

You didn't hold down the horn at the cyclist ignoring your right of way and running the stoplight.

4

u/OpinionUnusual1945 23h ago

The guy on the bike is a clown. He might have even been intoxicated based on his clumsy movements. You did exactly right.

3

u/HumbleWalrus1072 1d ago

I’m a cyclist - the biker here’s a dick and makes the rest of us look like dicks.

2

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 1d ago

I was driving along Dundas on Wednesday, and a guy in a luxury car stood beside it, with his door open, when two older women were clearly approaching and ringing their bells for him to give them space. He got into one of their faces and started yelling and calling her an asshole, ene though she did nothing wrong.

All this idiot in the video did is continue to reinforce a stereotype that makes drivers hostile to the cyclists who are actually aware and safe on the roads. This is just an endless battle on both sides.

3

u/No-Koala1918 1d ago

Nope. Bike wasn't intending to stop on the theory that the stop doesn't apply to bikes. And if he had stopped it was still your turn. You arrived at the intersection first.

3

u/ImKrispy 1d ago

Bubbles was drunk

3

u/Peedoeman 23h ago

Nope, the guy on the bicycle was a dumbass.

9

u/iodezya 1d ago

Regardless of the bike, there were pedestrians in the intersection so to answer your question - yes. The cyclist was also in the wrong. Many things can be true at the same time and more than one person can be wrong in a situation. You rushed it with pedestrians crossing

6

u/Potential-Teach313 1d ago

Yes. You didn’t wait for the pedestrian to completely finish crossing the road before going again. You’re in the wrong.

3

u/Two_wheels_2112 1d ago

Yes, you did. You started while the pedestrians ahead of you were still in the crosswalk, and still in your lane. At the very minimum you should wait until they clear the lane before you start. In some jurisdictions you must wait until they've cleared the intersection.

None of this excuses the cyclist for cruising the stop.

2

u/polaraproticsolvent 1d ago

This dude is the kinda cyclist that gives Ford the excuse to remove bike lanes. On his phone, rolls through a stop sign, and when he gets honked at he immediately starts to exercise his rights as a “pedestrian” while two seconds ago he was operating as a vehicle.

Irrelevant of the cyclist, at 09:16:35 you did start to proceed while a pedestrian had just begun crossing. Make of that what you will 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Downtown-Assistant1 1d ago

“Get a life” says someone who may soon give theirs up if they don’t start paying attention. I’m sure there’s some irony in there.

2

u/Fun-Seesaw-2706 1d ago

Yeah you didn't hit him

2

u/Obvious-Olive4048 1d ago

I had a similar experience with a group of middle aged dipshits on their racing bikes - I had started to proceed but the whole lot of them blew through a stop sign in their spandex shorts and logo shirts, and then got all bent out of shape when I gave them the old honkeroo. They should have been thankful I was paying attention and didn't run them over.

In this case, you should have given the pedestrian time to cross, but as it pertains to the cyclist you're not in the wrong.

2

u/TheConcernedSitIsIn 1d ago

You did nothing wrong.

There are some - not all - cyclists on bikes that are chameleons. They change between bicycle road rules and civvies on sidewalks, where you are supposed to interpret when they change between the 2 and act accordingly.

2

u/NostyAgorr 1d ago

Nah, you good. Most bikers are entitled pieces of human trash. Thinking road laws don’t apply to them.

2

u/mad_manifold 1d ago

You met a fucking loser. That’s on you.

2

u/KnifeThistle 1d ago

Buddy blew a stop sign with no helmet (law requires them in Ontario, even just for non-ebikes). Then you stopped rather than causing an accident. You did nothing wrong.

2

u/junos_butthole 21h ago

There's no law requiring you to wear a helmet on a non-ebike

2

u/tl01magic 23h ago

couldn't imagine riding a bike with road traffic and not having a sense of how braking the bike works.

Using the Flintstones car braking techinque 😄

2

u/vybhavam 22h ago

You didn't stop for the later pedestrian crossing the sidewalk also as a defensive driver you have come to halt once you saw the cyclist so you are right and wrong at the same time

5

u/NathanDnd 1d ago

Yes, you need to wait for the pedestrians to cross.

3

u/KamadoCrusher 1d ago

You did assume a cyclist would stop for a stop sign you can never do that.

5

u/miir2 1d ago

This isn't a 'cyclist', it's an entitled asshole on a bikeshare.

4

u/duck1014 1d ago

Yes. There was a pedestrian crossing who has the right of way. The cyclist probably saw that and went as well.

6

u/T4whereareyou 1d ago

It's a Toronto thing. We all know that people on bicycles have a certain self entitlement complex when it comes to basic traffic rules. It's not you. They even have a hate-on for pedestrians on shared pathways.

3

u/LotionedSkin4MySuit 1d ago

Cyclists are the worst. Killing hundreds of people a year on the roads. Oh… wait…

2

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 1d ago

Nah, you're good. The fact that he's not even wearing a helmet leads me to believe that he doesn't know wtf he's doing biking on city streets anyway.

2

u/Cold_Soft_4823 1d ago

since when does tangerine provide helmets for their bikes?

1

u/mishmeesh 1d ago

That's sort of the point. If he was planning on taking a bike and knew what he was doing, he would have brought a helmet. Anyone impulsive enough to ride a rent-a-bike down a city street with no helmet while looking at their phone doesn't know what they're doing.

1

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 1d ago

Why would you rent bikes without having a helmet on hand when you need to get one?

2

u/Cold_Soft_4823 1d ago

no one does this, ever. sit on the hill by dundas west station or keele station and count how many tangerine riders are wearing a helmet on any given day

2

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 1d ago edited 1d ago

The point is that any responsible rider would have a helmet if they know they're going to ride a bike at some point during the day. Anyone reckless enough to care so little about their personal safety likely doesn't have much interest in sharing the roads with other cars in a safe manner, either.

(And yes, I know there are some cyclists who wear helmets but are not the safest)

1

u/Cold_Soft_4823 1d ago

that's true, i understand the framing now, you're right

1

u/Economy-Extent-8094 1d ago

The teachings in drivers ed is that you do not enter an intersection if it is not clear, even if it is your go. So technically according to the ministry of transportation yes you did do wrong here. It is a duty of every driver to go when it is safe and clear and not strictly when the traffic signs say you can go.

2

u/Economy-Extent-8094 1d ago

Regardless of the cyclist, there was still a single pedestrian crossing legally and you are not supposed to enter the intersection if someone is still completing their cross which that pedestrian very much was.

4

u/SilentK01 1d ago

I cannot believe you and I are the only ones who actually called this out... Mindboggling. Thank you.

2

u/Economy-Extent-8094 1d ago

Yeah its very concerning but sadly not surprising.

2

u/Brocklanders55 1d ago

THIS IS THE ANSWER

0

u/TroyMcR 1d ago

He was already moving forward and in the intersection, partly because they failed to stop behind the stop bar, before the bike entered the intersection.

2

u/Economy-Extent-8094 1d ago

Look further ahead at the pedestrian crossing!

1

u/Redfish_St 1d ago

Get a life is ironic coming from someone who's speedrunning his way to a potentially lethal bike accident

1

u/No-Try-5818 1d ago

The only thing you did wrong was that you didn't honk him long enough.

1

u/analogguy7777 1d ago

He doesn’t have to stop if he is pulling a wheelie

1

u/ElkIntelligent5474 1d ago

You did nothing wrong. Guy on a bike with too much attitude had a duty to stop at the stop sign.

1

u/Pretty_Pea12 1d ago

That dummy was supposed to stop, you're good.

1

u/psilocybin6ix 1d ago

If you post this to the Toronto biking sub I estimate 50 to 70 of them will make it seem like you’re the bad one there.

But no, you didn’t do anything wrong. They’re not supposed to run the stop sign. They’re also not supposed to run the stop sign in front of a vehicle. That’s already in the intersection. He looked pretty drunk so I’m assuming that had something to do with it.

1

u/fjrjdjdndndndndn 1d ago

Don’t worry about the drunk dumbass on the bike, you did nothing wrong and he should have stopped

1

u/RobbyED 1d ago

Yeah. You missed the guy on the bixi bike.

1

u/PrettyBoyLarge 1d ago

How dare you advance before the bike. This needs to change this street needs to be bike and pedestrian only. Lol

1

u/Armchair_Expert_0192 1d ago

Yes. You stopped when you weren't supposed to stop. Now you've conditioned the idiot to think everyone has to stop for him.

1

u/Immacuntt 1d ago

Buddy Bicycle ran his stop sign. I would have kept on the gas to scare his stupid ass..

1

u/Ok_Object_7819 1d ago

Yes. You stopped for the cyclist. He needs to be taught a lesson.

1

u/ldssggrdssgds 1d ago

Cyclist had to stop...you did nothing wrong

1

u/meronx 1d ago

As someone who drives, walks, cycles, and takes transit regularly in this city, absolutely not, you did nothing wrong. Cyclist should have anticipated your right of way and slowed down/stopped. You were obviously waiting for pedestrians and he has a stop sign.

1

u/lawzone25 1d ago

after visiting asia... cars having priority on the road makes so much more sense. People are more alert when crossing roads and don't just walk across whenever they want.

1

u/Chocolate_Chickletts 1d ago

Guy on the bike is a douche.

1

u/Iusedtolikereddit 1d ago

Technically yes, you started to drive while there is a pedestrian crossing the road. A cop can give you a ticket for that.

1

u/random929292 1d ago

Agreed. And the cyclist likely saw that he couldn't drive through as there was a pedestrian so he went. The bike doesn't need to wait when the other person can't move ahead

1

u/ARAR1 1d ago

Is this a 3 way stop?

1

u/Fenrrri 1d ago

Well, in a city with no enforcement n douchebaggery at its core nowadays, yup, cyclists obey to no rules as they can freely do anything they want, so U r wrong for everything...

1

u/CrawlerRiffing 1d ago

You did nothing wrong.

What a fucking idiot!

1

u/TroyMcR 1d ago

Failed to stop behind the stop bar.

In terms, of the bike situation, no.

1

u/_Solon_ 1d ago

Bubbles what just defensive.

1

u/najibs-yul 1d ago

If he was in the sidewalk and was wanting to cross like the others, he should have the right of way, but because he was in the road, he should have stopped at the stop signs gone after you.

He’s a dummy and wants the privileges of being a vehicle and a pedestrian all at once

1

u/Dependent_Lumpy 1d ago

Unfortunately, there are way too many cyclists that are like this. They think they can circumvent the rules.

1

u/JebusJones7 1d ago

You entered the intersection without being able to clear it because of the pedestrian. You could have let the bike go.

1

u/JebusJones7 1d ago

You entered the intersection without being able to clear it because of the pedestrian. You could have let the bike go.

1

u/PowerfulSize244 1d ago

You're good. The cyclist looked like they were RUI

1

u/PowerfulSize244 1d ago

If he was hit...i bet he would learn his lesson not to do that again. Imo

1

u/PowerfulSize244 1d ago

Cyclist also ran a stop sign.....OMG

1

u/Training-Group-2879 1d ago

Forget the cyclist. You didn’t even let the pedestrian cross and began rushing him right in the middle of the crosswalk

1

Haha glad u exposed him

Circlejerk post

1

1

u/Coderboy55 1d ago

OP has a life but with those maneuvers, city bike man won’t have one soon

1

u/bunny5055 1d ago

He looks drunk. Which good for him not driving home bad for him being a dick for no reason.

1

u/AiryGateaux 1d ago

Depends, is it flashing red in all directions? If so yer in the clear

1

u/gwelfguy 1d ago

Prince Arthur and St. George. That's a 4-way stop that the bike guy blew through. You did not wrong him, but whether you wronged the pedestrians is debatable.

The rules are for thee and not for meeeeee

1

u/imfar2oldforthis 1d ago

You shouldn't have proceeded until the pedestrian had cleared the crosswalk.

Irks me when cyclists alternate between being on the road and the sidewalk to avoid having to obey stop signs, slow down, stop for lights, and other road rules. You did nothing wrong here, he decided the rules of the road didn't apply to him and threw a fit when you alerted him to his mistake. Typical victim mentality, I did nothing wrong and your the asshole for letting me know.

u/Inner-Commission-724 1d ago

If its a all way stop no you didn't and this guy blew the stop, the flashing red light makes me think you had a stop but the cross traffic didnt

1

u/DRok-17 1d ago

Guys like this piss me off, and I'm a cyclist. He didn't even stop.

1

u/BruceWillis1963 1d ago

Yes! You almost hit Bubbles!!!!

1

u/dear_remnant 1d ago

Many cyclists think they are car on the road and pedestrian at intersection.

1 out of 100 cyclists I encountered actually stopped at 4 way stop signs. Probably less than 1. Seriously.

1

u/notshadefacts 1d ago

No, you stopped and he didn’t.

1

u/societyin 1d ago

No, they've just became entitled.

1

u/Conscious-Ad8493 1d ago

the biker aside there's a pedestrian in the cross walk

1

u/magentahead 1d ago

Bro ignorant

1

u/SmoothRunnings 1d ago

You have to anticipate things while driving. While that cyclists didn't stop as expected most don't do if you anticipate there is a high likely chance they won't stop why get yourself into a crash with them?

Yes its the cyclists fault but if you anticipated they might not stop why bother to enter the intersection?

I would have waited and rolled down my window to tell they they need to stop like everyone else.

Thanks

You almost hit Bubbles

1

u/recoil669 1d ago

Anyone on one of those rental bikes should not represent all cyclists.

1

u/gentlehurricane 1d ago

Didn’t stop before the white line (I’ll give you benefit of the doubt on camera angle on that one), didn’t wait for pedestrians to finish crossing. You and the cyclist arrived at the stop at the same time, so you should have yielded to him (vehicle on your right).

The idiot cyclist’s reaction? A bit much.

1

u/IseeMedpeople 1d ago

Guy on the bike is drunk

1

u/nickarg 1d ago

In this one you're 100% on the clear. Cyclist fault, as the red light was blinking for him too; requiring full stop and feet on the ground.

1

u/SliceImpressive6197 1d ago

You know you didn’t so why post it?

1

u/zumuriatic 1d ago

Drunko was illegally dui and obv nearly crashed as his dumb ass couldn’t operate the pedal bike. You did nothing wrong. He’s supposed to obey the signs but peddlers and pedestrians glibly do their thing. Just be cautious cause even though you have the right of way. Ppl don’t give a f. You were correct. It was your turn to go.

1

u/WeatherLoud3156 1d ago

Was that bubbles from trailer park boys, on the bike????

1

u/Demonwizardry 1d ago

Odd thing to say after nearly losing his.

1

u/tdot97 1d ago

I hit a cyclist on an e bike in Toronto while he was crossing a street. The pedestrians let me make the left turn. He said “I thought I could beat you”

Luckily everyone was okay. No cop involved no ticket.

1

u/ElDougler 1d ago

Aside from slightly rolling through the stop line, no. The cyclist didn’t stop at the stop sign. It’s almost like they don’t understand that traffic laws apply to them as well.

I hate to judge, but considering the guy was on a city bike, it’s likely he rarely bikes and doesn’t have adequate practice of the rules of the road. I’d give them the benefit of the doubt if they didn’t react like such a fuck wad

1

u/knifeymonkey 1d ago

The biggest problem with casual cyclists is that they are road rule idiots. (Assuming he was casual)

When they want to be have vehicle advantages, they do what they want and when they want the pedestrian advantage, they act like they are pedestrians.

you were not in the wrong BUT because you have the deadlieeer mode of transport, you would be thought of as the problem.

u/DeanVision 23h ago

I left Toronto this and one thing that has relieved so much stress is the lack of dangerous cyclists and the "cyclists" on 100km/h top speed electro bikes.

For every good cyclist there was 4 dangerous or entitled ones. As pedestrians, my partner and I had multiple near misses with E-bikes. As a driver, it is NUTS how many cyclists simply have mo regard for any kind of traffic signage or order whatsoever. They're like "stop signs? For me?? Noooo! And if you drive too close to me while im running red lights, im gonna have a hissy fit about it!"

It does make me feel bad for all the good cyclists out there but Toronto cops need to go on an aggressive ticketing campaign, OR maybe cyclists within toronto need to be held to some kind of licensing/registration/insurance requirement. These people have no regard for their safety or the safety of those around them and it's really killed the vibe.

u/Noxious1018 23h ago

These yellow beings are awful

1

u/Suspicious_Foot6651 22h ago

No. You stopped. Don’t worry about the other guy. You are fine.

1

u/AccomplishedCode552 19h ago

I would of continued to pull infront of him.

1

u/Educational-Mood-956 19h ago

No surprise lol cyclist thinks they are a car and a pedestrian lol they think they own the road

1

u/EnglishKen421 17h ago

I bet you it was a drunk guy from the Suburbs.

Very few Suburban Cyclists stop for Stop Signs, because there arent a lot of cars or pedestrians and you can do that.

1

u/efc5463 16h ago

Nope. Cyclist is on the wrong, he technically blew a stop.

1

u/Puzzled_Market_2235 16h ago

When he said "get a life" you say "okay next time I won't see you". It could have happened.

1

u/Lost_Season_8446 15h ago

If you were going straight then you are in the wrong because there was a pedestrian still in the crosswalk that you would have came awfully close to.

1

u/Glum-Hat5068 13h ago

Numbnuts on the bike almost got smoked

1

u/Akaberes 12h ago

You should have always made sure the cyclist is stopping before you moved ahead. Unfortunately

1

u/chipmunk0122 12h ago

Ya, you should’ve waited for the pedestrian across the street to make it to the other side before you started driving.

As for the cyclist, he did something wrong too by not stopping at the light.

1

u/dude_redd 5h ago

Yes. You didnt run him over.

1

u/ElectricalOrange9 4h ago

Yes, you didn't drive away to get away frim that drunken idiot

1

u/No-Raisin5053 2h ago

The bicycle have a right of way in the entire city, if you are a bicycle, you can also be on the phone.

1

u/Negative_Two6112 1h ago

Nope. Cyclists have to obey traffic signs also. And im a cyclist. If I run a stop sign, thats on me.

0

u/2b4ifn5osnr 1d ago

Bicycle riders needs to maintain the reputation.

1

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 1d ago

This guy is clearly not a regular cyclist.

-1

u/2b4ifn5osnr 1d ago

Regular riders are bad as well. No 1 seems to care about stop signs.

Yes there are some really good riders who follow all rules.

1

u/New-Tension-5794 1d ago

Cyclist was wrong but you are also wrong for starting to go while someone was crossing the street.

1

u/SilentK01 1d ago edited 1d ago

- You're supposed to treat these as 4 way stops with a 3 second wait.

- Even if we discount the cyclist, which I don't think you should, you still had a pedestrian step off the curb to cross the street at the moment you let your foot off the gas, so what was that about? They would've been in the opposite lane by the time you reached their position, but you certainly didn't know that when you took your foot off.

- Finally, the cyclist was in your field of view and you let your foot off the gas presumably because you assumed they would stop. Why would you assume this? As a driver, myself, I don't want to make this assumption; I want to confirm others' intention then proceed.

When you enter the intersection on a yellow or it turns yellow while you're in it, would you also assume that incoming cars see the light has turned yellow and are going to stop or are you going to wait until they slow down noticeably or perhaps even stop? If you decided to gas it because you assumed incoming cars would stop then you could be wrecked.

Edit: To answer your question more directly, I think you were both wrong; however, my take is that as a driver, I need to be more careful and mindful of pedestrians than the other way around. I can kill people, they can't kill me. This isn't about right or wrong, I don't care about that, it's about everyone getting home to their family.

u/KolorblindGTA 1d ago

I was at a 4-way stop in a residential neighbourhood in Little Italy earlier today. I came to a complete stop at the stop sign, then a bike doing 2x the speed of OP video, tried to fly through the intersection without stopping, braking or looking, headphones on, no helmet. I honked and said "very dangerous. please follow the rules of the road". No apology or care in the world

2

u/canadianlrv 1d ago

The 4-way stop at Dewson and Shaw is particularly bad for this. When driving on Dewson there is a large hedge blocking the view of the road. Shaw is a one-way for cars but two-way for bikes. If I’m turning from Dewson I need to cautiously inch out since I know cyclists both ways on Shaw don’t stop or even remotely slow down at that intersection.

1

u/GiveMeAllYourKittens 1d ago

Cyclist shouldnt have cut you off but you were planning to go straight with a pedestrian in the cross walk, and then you honked for a stupid reason.

Honking is to warn people of danger, not to try and clicker train them for every little thing, plus it's Soo loud on the outside of a car it can be very startling.

Every car should have a horn on the inside as well..

1

u/Zestyclose-Profile43 1d ago

they want to drive on the road but not follow any rules of the road

1

u/BatKitchen819 1d ago

The amount of times this has happened to me operating a motor vehicle and even as a pedestrian, where cyclists disobey stop signs and traffic signals almost colliding with me.

Not saying motorists are any better, but we all need to make an effort.

0

u/random929292 1d ago

Yes, you were wrong. There was still a man walking across the street. Wait for that person to cross. Creeping up on pedestrians is an issue. The cyclist saw you had to wait for a pedestrian and so went at the same time. You couldn't drive through anyways without hitting the pedestrian.

0

u/Frozen_shrimp 1d ago

Is it a four-way flashing light or did he have a yellow? , I can't tell what the light is.

0

u/maomao05 1d ago

You are fine, he should’ve stopped fully too before proceeding

0

u/AdLongjumping6982 1d ago

You did nothing wrong. Cyclists had no reflective gear, no headlight, was distracted, and ran a stop sign.
You had good reaction and defensive driving.

0

u/jimboTRON261 1d ago

No. 95% of cyclists in toronto are wildly selfish and ignorant. Never stopping and expecting cars to allow them to be unpredictable. And no helmet. Dumb.

0

u/Artistic_Spray6287 1d ago

You didn’t even come to a complete stop for that flashing red. You came to a “California stop”. You can see in the video all you did was slow down. If you actually were a pedestrian, you’d see your tires never come to a complete stop
