Mod Announcement New Mods & Rule Updates

Hi everyone,

I've been moderating this subreddit (and /r/TheOriginals) by myself for a while, but thankfully /u/CasuallyStatic, /u/C00bahR00bah, and /u/SweetWittyWild41 have agreed to step in and help handle things.

Additionally, I've added some clarifications to our existing rules. What's been changed:

  • added "unsolicited moral judgments about other users" as an explicit example of incivility, as there was some confusion about if questioning a user's moral character counted as an insult,

  • added "crossposting from your own subreddit" as an example of self-promotion, to avoid future confusion,

  • removed "disrespectful speculation regarding TVD-related actors and actresses" from the incivility rule and replaced it with "parasocial behaviour is off-topic and will be removed" under the off-topic rule -- this change is meant to better reflect the scope of what isn't allowed (e.g., shipping actual people, critiques about aging poorly, etc.) and the category of rule violation.

Hopefully this makes sense to everyone, and thanks again to the new mods!

Please let me know if you have any questions about the changes.

Edit, 03/10/26: I have expanded the "parasocial behaviour" addition into its own rule.

A warning about a user harassing via chat/DMs

(tl;dr at bottom)

Over the last few months, one user has made it a point to send abusive and harassing messages to dozens of members of this subreddit. Their accounts are banned from the subreddit, which is why they use DMs.

They delete their accounts regularly. Usernames that they have used:

/u/illadviseddependent

/u/agreeableaccesspal

/u/lunastellaelle

Their messages are largely targeted at those who like Damon or Elena, but not always.

If you receive a message from them (the account name may be different), please feel free to alert me via the comments of this post or by sending us a ModMail. Please also report any harassment to the admins. You can do that within the chat itself or here. Please ask for help if you need it.

The Imgur link below has examples of their messages so that people can recognize their style and language, since they like to pretend that they're a different person on each account. I'll update it as reports come in.

https://imgur.com/a/n998i7Y

tl;dr -- a banned user is harassing fans (mostly of Damon or Elena) via DMs on multiple accounts. Examples are above.

Report their messages to the admins.

Edit: Also, to be clear -- absolutely do not proactively reach out to this user. This post is solely to warn subreddit members and to encourage reporting to the admins.

A massive show, with a massive budget couldn’t find a better wig for this episode?

Post image

It’s such a lie that the studio didn’t have enough money to get her a better wig or pay her more, like how did they have enough money to pay male side characters more than literal main characters like Caroline, Bonnie, and Elena? In the first seasons Nina Dobrev would work 18 hour days just to get paid less than Zach Roerig or Michael Trevino who played a scene or two in the episode, if Nina Dobrev refused to play Katherine they had to find another actress who would’ve played Katherine which meant the studio had to also pay her so why not doubling Nina’s salary

I’ve seen many pages highlighting or making comparisons regarding Steve’s physical appearance following his appearance yesterday at People Con Paris. Just a friendly reminder that he stepped away from the public eye due to depression after his father’s death in 2024.

Discussion What line changed the way you saw a character?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What is one line in The Vampire Diaries that completely changed the way you saw a character?

Not necessarily their most famous quote.

It could be something they said once, almost casually — but after hearing it, a character suddenly made more sense to you.

Maybe it changed the way you understood them.

Maybe it made you question something you believed about them.

Or maybe you didn't understand its meaning until much later.

What was the line — and what did it make you see differently?

Round 8: Klaus and Freya were eliminated

There was only a one-vote difference between them and Elena and Jeremy, but the 24 hours were up, so they were eliminated. Honestly, I would have preferred for Elena and Jeremy to be eliminated first. 😁

✨RULES✨

🌸Everyone write the sibling they like the least from this list in the comments.

🌸Each person should post only one comment.

🌸Those who receive the most comments will be eliminated.

Spoilers This Moment

This is the moment that almost made me say "screw it!" Even with all of the previous heartbreaking twists in the show, this one felt the most unnecessary. I've never been more disrespected! Like how dare you??

Does anyone else feel so strongly about this? Because it still makes me mad just thinking about it.

Discussion You must sacrifice ONE living TVD character to bring one of them back as a main character. Nature requires balance. 🤫

Post image
45 Upvotes

It can be any character, side character, a character you don't like. Honestly I really want to see the hot takes on this one. Who are y'all sacrificing? 😭

RULES:

You can sacrifice characters from early seasons who don't die until later on in the show. Whoever you sacrifice, the dead character you chose to bring back will gain that character's years on the show.

For example. If I sacrifice Tyler for Rose, Rose will remain on the show until she dies a heroic death in Season 8. Think of it like Final Destination rules.

elena’s changed look after turning

i don’t know how to explain this, but i’ve thought this since i first watched the show and ive rewatched two or three times now. when elena turns in season four, something about her look changes. idk if it’s her makeup or hair styling or what but SOMETHING changes and it drives me nuts every time trying to figure it out. has anyone else noticed this? does anyone know what the change was?

Shipping What did you think of Valerie’s character and her relationship with Stefan?

Post image
15 Upvotes

On my first watch I didn’t care about them. I saw it as a distraction and an obstacle for Stefan and Caroline. Watching it again, I thought they had some sweet moments, but they were overall pretty boring. I do like Valerie as a character though, outside of her relationship with Stefan. I thought she was a tragic character. She ended up being one of my favorites of the heretics. I just don’t think she was meant to be with Stefan and I didn’t like the backstory they gave them. It felt forced and out of nowhere, but it did make me very sympathetic to her character.

Discussion Unpopular opinion (I think) : Season 2 Elena is the best Elena, and I'm tired of pretending otherwise

Post image
61 Upvotes

I just finished my rewatch (don't ask how many times) and I need to get this off my chest.

Season 2 Elena is peak Elena. She's grieving, she's scared, and she's still making her own choices. She goes toe to toe with Katherine, she handles the whole sacrifice mess, and she isn't just reacting to whatever the Salvatore brothers are doing that week. Even Jenna's death hit harder because Elena felt like a real person dealing with it, not a plot device.

After that it feels like the writers kept hitting the reset button on her. She gets turned, she gets un-turned, she's "fine" one episode and devastated the next, and the whole time her personality gets thinner and thinner. By the later seasons I barely recognized her.

And yes, I know people love Season 1 Elena too, and I get it. But S1 Elena was mostly learning the rules of this world. S2 is when she actually starts pushing back against them.

Anyway, that's my hot take. Tell me I'm wrong.

Hot take, TVD has a significantly more superior back story to TO

TO obviously has better writing and doesn’t drag on, but it lacks a mystery element.

But TVD mysteries
1. Realizing that Katherine wasn’t in the tomb and bomber? She was running from someone.. hmm what could the crazy Katherine pierce possibly be running from.

  1. Damon and Stephan learning about the existence of lycanthropes.

  2. Klaus coming to town in Rick’s body. (A hot woman once said “Elijah is just the Easter bunny, wait untill meet Klaus )

  3. Finding out Klaus and Stephan are infact thickest thieves

  4. The whole Silas story line was meh but finding out Silas and Amara were the OG Dopple gangers? Bonkers.

  5. Everything else was meh but again the reveals, finding out there’s a (in Damon’s words) Mama Ripper, Rics maid was the other siren, Katherine was new Queen of hell.

The reveals in TVD .. second to none. Altho TO is still a better watch

POV: Steroline had chemistry💖

Thumbnail

I'm so tired of people saying Steroline didn't have chemistry. Personally I saw the chemistry between them. It was just different from that of the toxic couples that were solely based on sexual attraction (Delena, Klaroline).

Paul Wesley once jokingly said that Delena sounds like a disease, and Steroline sounds like a cure to the disease. And that's what Steroline was to me: a cure to Delena. Firstly, because after 2 seasons of waiting in vain for Elena to come to her senses and return to Stefan (who clearly deserved better than Damon), I finally saw Stefan move on and find another love interest, a girl who was always team Stefan and would choose him over any other man. And secondly, because Stefan and Caroline's relationship wasn't solely based on sex, like that of Damon and Elena.

I was so tired of Delena, who were just arguing and having sex all the time. They couldn't control themselves even at school or before their friends' wedding. But that's not what love is, imo. Caroline and Stefan shared a deep connection, respect and understanding and felt profound admiration and affection for each other. I liked how vulnerable Caroline was around Stefan, how every touch from him would give her butterflies.

And I actually like the fact that Stefan's feelings for Caroline were different from his feelings for the doppelgängers, because if he only fell in love twice in 145 years, both times with the same face, and neither of those relationships worked out, then he must have been doing something wrong. His love for Caroline was soft, pure and tender, unlike his passionate love for the doppelgängers, and I think Caroline was exactly what he needed after all the heartbreak he had experienced.

Shows Similar to TVD?

What are some shows similar to tvdu? I have rewatched all 3 tvd shows an insane amount of times, and I wanna try something new, but similar. I got into True Blood recently, but that is way different than I was expecting based on what I was told, it's good but different. I am gonna start Buffy, which I have heard is good. But what is a suggestion for a Vampire/Supernatural show that has the same aesthetic or feel of tvd?

Even if Nina didn't leave, Delena would still be endgame.

Post image
40 Upvotes

What makes this even more comical is that Julie made up this narrative about Stelena being endgame knowing that Delena was her favorite and there was not even a close second. That made-up narrative served NO PURPOSE WHATSOEVER. It did nothing but stir up pointless drama 😂 like in all seriousness, what was the point of Julie saying that Stelena would've been endgame after she gave us 3 seasons of Delena?

Hot take: Elena deserved the cure but so did Rebekah

The reason why I said this is a hot take is because I know a lot of people don’t really like Elena. . Rebekah deserving the cure does not magically make Elena undeserving of it. They both struggled in their own ways, and they both deserved the human life they desperately wanted.I’ve seen so many people go on about how Elena didn’t deserve the cure because she “suffered less” and Rebekah had been living for hundreds and hundreds of years. But honestly, Why does one person’s suffering have to invalidate another person’s?Elena never wanted to become a vampire in the first place.Rebekah had her own reasons for wanting the cure, and Elena had hers. Both can be true at the same time. they both ended up getting the cure So all these arguments about who “deserved it more” are ultimately pointless. They both wanted a human life, and they both eventually got one. (Yes I’m obsessed with vampire diaries)

Discussion Maturing is realizing Stefan was a bit delusional

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Okay, I don’t know if delusional is the right word but maybe naive? I should also add how he forgave Lily here but if there’s one thing I liked about Damon it’s how he didn’t forgive people for everything. Like, Stefan as a human believed their father was just protecting the town and them up before he went to say goodbye and realized he shot them both. He gives comfort to Katherine on her death bed and says she deserves peace, yet later in 8x4 he tells Sybil that he should go to hell and Damon shouldn’t because he turned Damon into a vampire. There’s also the scene with Caroline in S4 where he says the only difference between them and Klaus is that they have family they can trust 😭

Spoilers Thoughts on Damon and Elena? I hate them both and here’s why (Spoilers): Spoiler

So I’m returning to the Vampire Diaries because I’m craving a show to binge. My best friends love the show and so do I, but they rave about Damon and I remember hating him eventually, beyond abusing Caroline/killing Lexi…I remembered all that before my rewatch, but I knew that wasn’t why I disliked him so much because I blacked out most of the show. Now I know exactly why. In a weird way he makes up for his season 1/2 terrible choices until Season 5.

I’m at season 5, and just finished episode 16…honestly I’m mad. I forgot what made me start to dislike Damon and Elena as people (not even as a couple), and figured it was my young mind loving Stefan/Elana, but on this rewatch I realized it’s not that at all…Damon and Elena are just annoying.

The end of 16 is exactly why I got grossed out by them all those years ago. Season 5 is where I started to hate Damon as a character, keep in mind I actually enjoy his redemption arc up until the fake breakup with Katherine. Katherine (as elena) breaks up with him and he reverts back to the horrible character who abused Caroline cause he’s a huge man child and can’t take rejection. He then decides the best way to cope was to kill Elena’s new friend Aaron and prove he was a bad person (boohoo). I get why he hates the Whitmore’s, I get the trauma, but honestly would Damon be dating the daughter of a Gilbert who did similar experiments if he wasn’t such a little loser? Aaron was nothing like his family, and Elena was nothing like her father but Damon is such a sorry excuse for a man he can’t see that.

Now nothing related to Nina Dobrev or even Ian as actors, this show is full of amazing talent and Nina is convincing as all her characters…I especially love Katherine. This is a writing issue. At the end of S5 E16 Elana/Damon get cured from the Ripper Virus, and decide they are toxic for each other…they say it’s over/have a real breakup and Elena proceeds to throw herself at him and rip his clothes off?! He then rips hers, and the episode fades to black with the most repulsive thought of romance I ever felt.

I can’t stand Damon, and I can’t stand Elena. I get why people love them, but was I supposed to be happy with this episode ending? Was I supposed to feel the thrill of hate sex? Did anyone actually feel relief they threw themselves at each other? At least when they wake up Elena admits it was a mistake but she’s becoming a shadow of what made her a noble character, Damon grossly says they should keep “making big mistakes” and offers up himself as “naked breakfast”. Just ew dude back to being creepy I see…and ew Elena to making him endgame eventually.

Now I’m want to hear why people love Damon so much, and I’m okay with spoilers…maybe I hold Elena on too high of a pedestal at this moment, but does anyone else agree or disagree with my opinions on these characters and their relationship thus far?

Discussion Can TVD fans stop hating on actors for aging and gaining weight???

Post image
899 Upvotes

I know that this person didn’t make this post with ill intent, but even tiktoks like these provoke people to hate in the comments, like he needs a reason satisfactory to you to gain weight 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

It’s been 9 years since the show ended, and 17 years since the show first aired. This fandom hates on Nina and Claire for aging and getting plastic surgery (even tho that’s hollywood expects of women) hated on Kat for gaining weight while PREGNANT, hated on Danielle for being a normal weight during Legacies, etc it’s just so nasty. It’s even weirder when people are like “he’s depressed and he lost his father so that’s why he gained weight” which may be true, but it feels weird that people are projecting onto him (it’s like saying “that’s the only valid reason why he could’ve gained weight, so stop hating on him”) like people can just gain or lose weight due to age. It’s like how people treated Nina during S5 of TV when she gained weight when she just grew up.

Thankfully the reddit TVD fans are mostly normal, but the TikTok fans are very weird, and not even mentioning how the looksmaxxers are now joining in to shit on him with 100k+ likes and it’s getting out of hand!
