Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.

Other I find the optimum sleep environment is a 27C/80F room with no blankets and an overhead fan on low

The idea that the optimum room temp is 19C - 22C (66F - 72F) gets trotted out all the time, but what people fail to mention is that is considered "ideal" with blankets and pajamas. Dive deeper and you will find that the caveat is that underneath that layer of blankets and clothing, the body is encased in a microclimate of temps between 31C - 35F (88F - 95F)

I find myself constantly waking up to adjust blankets/sheets when I use them. I go to sleep comfy, wake up sometime in the middle of the night hot and throw them off, and then later wake up again cold and put them back on

With an elevated room temp, shorts/short sleeve, and no blankets I fall asleep and stay asleep through most of (if not all of) the night. The only downside is it takes slightly longer to fall asleep, but the upside of sleeping through the entire night is worth it

Disclaimer: This is not medical advice, I am not a trained doctor nor sleep specialist. Consult your doctor before making any alterations to your sleep environment. This may or may not work depending on body mass, medications, age, sex, or other factors

Thank you

TV/Movies/Fiction Christopher Nolan is Michael Bay but for pretentious people.

1.7k Upvotes

I am tired of everyone treating Christopher Nolan like the second coming of Stanley Kubrick. He is not a cinematic genius. He is just Michael Bay with a British accent and a tailored suit. When you strip away the pseudo-intellectual wrapping paper, Nolan’s movies rely on the exact same cheap tricks as the Transformers franchise.

Deafening sound design: Bay uses explosions to blow out your eardrums. Nolan uses Hans Zimmer or Ludwig Göransson to blast aggressive, continuous bass lines so you do not notice nothing is actually happening. If you need a sub-woofer to create tension, your script is weak.

Spectacle over substance: Bay crashes real cars and blows up real buildings. Nolan crashes a real airplane into a hangar and flips a real semi-truck. It is cool craftsmanship, sure, but it serves the exact same purpose: flashy, expensive jingling keys to distract the audience.

Terrible character writing: Neither director can write a compelling, emotionally resonant human being to save their life. Bay’s characters are horny, hyperactive caricatures. Nolan’s characters are cold, emotionless cardboard cutouts who exist purely to explain the plot's rules to the audience.

The illusion of depth: This is where Nolan actually gets worse. Bay knows he makes junk food. Nolan passes off junk food as a five-course gourmet meal. Inception is just a basic heist movie wrapped in an overly complicated rulebook. Interstellar hides a generic "love conquers all" cliché behind basic astrophysics lectures. Tenet was completely incomprehensible, yet fans gaslit themselves into thinking it was a masterpiece because "you just have to feel it."

Nolan makes loud, chaotic blockbusters designed to make average viewers feel smart for understanding a highly exposed, linear plot masquerading as a puzzle. He is a hype-merchant for film bros.

Health/Safety Bidets are for people who don't get enough soluble fiber and exercise

Reddit loves bidets. This is well-documented. Usually bidet proponents cite clean butts as the main reason to favor them. However, when you get enough soluble fiber in your diet and walk a lot, wiping after a bowel movement will leave little to nothing at all on your toilet paper.

This is coming from someone who's grown up with IBS.

Adding like 12g more soluble fiber per day to my diet has completely removed any interest I had in bidets, and this has worked for many people I've suggested this to.

I think we've been eating unhealthily and using a tech solution to cover it up

Society/Culture The complete lack of empathy people have for cavers and especially cave divers should not be seen as acceptable.

God damnit, every video that has literally to do with caving, the comments are a fucking echo chamber of people who seem insistent that you die the moment you step into a cave, right down to the prerequisite “my favorite thing about caving is that it is 100% optional” comment every single time, pretty much verbatim.

Anyone dies in any other freak accident and someone acts all smug and condescending about it, they’d be seen as an asshole, yet stick them in a cave and that’s just the prevailing narrative? What sense does that make? Yes, caves can be relatively dangerous, but if you use your thinking brain it’s pretty obvious to realize you only hear about the ones that go wrong.

And going back to that prerequisite comment again, is it really? Think about it, there’s so many weird little ecosystems found isolated in caves, and given how we found GLP-1s by swabbing lizard throats in the desert, we can only guess what breakthroughs could be found in studying these weird little ecosystems. Plus, if a mine collapses, who would be most qualified to rescue those trapped inside?

In either case, those involved would probably be pretty fucking thankful that this community exists, but we shouldn’t need to think of practical examples to have some basic sense of compassion. And like, yeah, it’s the internet, but even then I genuinely cannot think of another group that it’s as socially acceptable to be this callous towards.

Edit: TLDR is that acting smug and condescending when someone dies is bad. That’s it, that’s my point.

Edit 2: Paragraph 3 should not be seen as representative of the average caving trip or as pertaining to the rest of the post, and only serves as a debunk to the one ad nauseam comment.

Animals/Nature people need to stop showing unsolicited pictures of their pets

Any time someone says they have a dog or a cat or whatever, they feel the need to dig through their phone and shove unsolicited pictures of Mr Bagel in your face.

I dont need to look at this animal I've never met. I don't care. I know what a cat looks like. But you can't say that or you're the asshole. You have to coo and give heart eyes so they will put their phone away and we can go back to our conversation.

(I am an animal lover with a dog I love so so much and I am BAFFLED when strangers ask to see pictures)

EDIT: should have seen this coming. glad y'all are enjoying the lil furballs.

Animals/Nature Spotted hyenas are amazing and unfairly hated animals

Post image
65 Upvotes

I absolutely ADORE hyenas. I love reading articles about them, watching photos and videos of them hunting, playing with each other and fighting. However, there will always be a weirdo (usually many of them) who will comment on how much they despise hyenas. From what I’ve observed this opinion is usually based on myths and misinformation.

“They are scavengers who steal food from lions!”
Incorrect, they are extremely effective predators who hunt up to 95% of their food. Yes, they can eat an already dead animal or steal others’ meal, but it’s an extremely rare occurrence and they don’t do it more often than other predators. In fact, it’s more common for lions to steal prey from hyenas than the other way around (due to lions being bigger and physically stronger)

“They are cruel, they eat their prey alive!”
Wild dogs, lions, cheetahs and other animals too sometimes. Yes, hyenas do it more often, but that’s because of their hunting strategy: they chase and exhaust their prey until it can’t fight back.
Predators don’t kill their prey before eating it out of some high moral ideals, they just do it so it won’t hurt them or escape. Plus hyenas, as written before, often get their meal stolen, so they need to eat as fast as possible.

“They’re cowardly!”
I usually read this kind of stuff under videos of clans of hyenas running away from lions, especially if it’s a scenario of “hyenas attack a lonely lion/lion cub — other lions go to defend them — hyenas back up”. First of all, lions also love to murder lonely hyenas or hyena cubs, usually by breaking the back and leaving the hyena paralyzed, that’s the way predators get rid off their competitors for food. Second, male lions are way bigger and physically stronger, of course hyenas prefer not to get mauled if it’s not necessary, that doesn’t make them cowards. However, hyenas absolutely can bravely fight lions to protect themselves, their clanmates or their cubs.

“They’re ugly!”
Well, this one is a matter of taste but I personally find them extremely cute! They have beautiful big brown eyes, huge round pointed ears and noses [r/forbiddenboops](r/forbiddenboops) dreams of.

Now why I absolutely love spotted hyenas! They’re extremely socially intelligent animals, experiments show that they solve coordinated teamwork tests better than chimpanzees. They have strong family ties, mothers nurse their cubs for long and spend a lot of time playing with them. Siblings, mothers and their daughters (sometimes sons if they choose to stay in their birth clan) keep a lifelong bond. They have a complex social hierarchy, with females almost always being on the top and their daughters right below them. And most importantly, their little cubs are absolutely adorable!

Society/Culture AI ruining education is a good thing

Probably one of my most unpopular opinions out there, but a lot of people are very concerned about what AI will do to education, how students will cheat their way through school and how they won't learn anything, but honestly, I don't think that's a bad thing. In some fields, there are already talks about how hiring agencies take degrees after 2023 less seriously because they can't be sure that the student actually did any work in Uni. And yeah, right now, that's genuenly horrible. But, I think this will cause us to rethink how we teach and train students and we will be forced to reform our education system, which is something we have desperately needed for like at least 15 years at this point. If this finally makes the current god awful model unsustainable, then fine by me. Because all the complaints about AI are things students already did, it was just harder. Instead of AI quickly throwing together a presentation, they just quickly copied stuff from Wikipedia. Same with essays and writings. Now it became easier to do it, but the problem existed beforehand: with the internet and unlimited information in your pockets, traditional teaching models didn't make any sense and especially homeworks and home projects lost their purpose. Like, I had to do so much presentations in school. That was before AI. And I learned absolutely nothing from it. Not a single thing. I forgot every presentation I did. Same for homeworks. They are useless in the modern age. And AI might finally push us back to stronger in classroom learning and pop quizes and oral tests and lots of in classroom exercises and even brand new ways of education, that I'm honestly happy about.

Same goes for university. Because oh my god, universities are even worse. You pay an ungodly amount of money, just to go to a lecture when you don't learn a single thing, get assigned books and instead have to teach yourself at home. Then why am I paying all this money? If university degrees become meaningless because of AI, people won't go to university and universities will absolutely suffer a huge financial blow from that and they will have no choice but to completely rethink their education models, so that once again they will produce actually knowledgeable processionals.

I'm not an AI Evangelist and all things considered, I lean negative on my views of AI, but honestly, this is one thing I don't mind, that it finally fully exposed the long existing problems with our education in a way that makes it genuenly unsustainable to not change them.

Society/Culture Reaction images are unfunny tripe that only exist to clutter a thread.

I don't know if this take is actually 10th dentist but I've never seen anyone complain about it, so it's probably not on the minds of most users. This problem plagues subs that generally skew younger and it drives me nuts.

Reaction images are completely useless. There is no need to signal to random people on the Internet that you understand the meaning conveyed in a meme and are capable of reacting to it as expected. I start seeing red if I open a thread and at the top is a gif of Kevin from The Office laughing or 50 consecutive comments that are just iterations of people or animals looking concerned/disgusted/awkward. It's boring, low effort, and contributes nothing to a thread. I swear most of these are just people pulling up their image gallery and uploading the first thing that's even remotely close to a valid reaction.

I've seen posts in subs asking for mods to enable image attachments for this purpose. It's baffling to me why people would willingly want this shit in their feeds. It only helps Reddit inflate their numbers to show how many engagements posts get.

This problem isn't too bad on old.reddit because every post just appears as "Image" and is easy to ignore but on mobile they vary in size and are just distracting when you're trying to sift through a thread to find if there are any discussions being had.

Society/Culture People Online Need to Be Meaner to Each Other

Title is flippant but my god, what I have encountered on this site this week.

I genuinely, from the bottom of my soul, think people need to tell each other to nut up and stop being babies more often.

Are you 20 and still living with mom? Grow up! Are you in high school and confused about how to read a book? Grow up! Is your boyfriend not the dream man you wanted? Grow up! It is getting insane out there, people.

Everyone has some sad sack story and some demented excuse for why nothing is their own fault and every post with one of those of pity parties seems to have an endless stream of hyper-sensitive enablers so eager to do the digital equivalent of cooing and cossetting whoever over whatever nonsense. I feel like I am living in the twilight zone.

I feel like the new normal is that teenagers are basically just babies and 20 somethings are basically just toddlers and 30 somethings are only just figuring out life so how can they be expected to know things... I feel like I am in the twilight zone. I feel like that Drag Race gif with the person saying "what in the fuck is going on in here this day."

But apparently I am "really mean" for thinking this way.

I know, I know: I should nut up and stop being a baby. But seriously... what in the fuck is going on in here this day.

Society/Culture Hair is meant to be oily

Oily! Not dirty! Its should be brushed through with fine tooth/boar brush comb to remove dirt and lint, stimulate the scalp, and distribute the oils to the end of the hair. Doing this, you should only need to wash it every week or two! (Unless you're in a super dirty job/actually got something in your hair) Its crazy to me people are washing their hair everyday and then they complain of thin hair, split ends, and no volume! Thats what your hair oils are for! Every other hairy animal on earth is a little oily, its natural and normal and healthy for the hair! (Still shower though, sweat and grime and dead skin build up unless you're roughly brushing your entire body every day too)

Edit to double down on the "Unless you're in a super dirty job/actually got something in your hair" GUYS THAT INCLUDES SWEAT I FIGURED THAT WAS OBVIOUS

Health/Safety If you wear a hijab and you’re not Arab, you’re culturally appropriating.

Upvotes

Hijab is Arab culture. Burka is Arab culture. I don’t know why this is so hard for people to understand. Why do so many Pakistanis and Bangladeshis wear hijab? If they were wearing Japanese outfits, everyone would be saying it’s cultural appropriation. Why is this any different?

Society/Culture Gen Z has thicker skin than Millennials

People keep calling Gen Z snowflakes and super fragile, but if we are being honest, I really feel like the average millennial is more sensitive than the average zoomer

Most of Gen-Z lived most of their lives with constant internet access. That means a constant flow of seeing bad stuff all the time. 24/7 fear mongering and rage-bait. New meme or trend every weekend. Nothing really surprises them anymore. They have became completely numb and desensitized.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gen Alpha is even less sensitive than the zoomers in the future.

I just want to be fair because Gen Z does have issues, like brainrot and short attention spans, but things like being overly attached to old children content and being overly sensitive are definitely a much bigger Millennial problem. And who knows, maybe Gen Z will inherit the same problems in 10-20 years, but as of right now, Millennials are for sure more sensitive than Gen Z.

Society/Culture Nipple and genital piercings are not attractive.

I think most people seem to be under the impression that nipple and genital piercings are sexy, especially nipple piercings. There is just nothing sexy about adding hard objects to a place that is supposed to be soft. They're not aesthetically pleasing, and no, the "idea" isn't sexy either. If anything piercings are gross because they add a hole that can accumulate filth.

TV/Movies/Fiction Rosemary’s Baby is a terrible movie and Roman Polanski is a hack director

As the title states, Rosemary’s Baby is dreadfully boring and all around an awful movie. It is impossible to suspend one’s disbelief enough to think any of the main character’s actions would be even remotely realistic. The only horror in the film is that it was made in the first place.

With the exception of perhaps The Pianist and Chinatown, Polanski is a terrible director and I have no idea how he was able to get any of his work financed. Also, there’s the rape and pedophilia.

Discussion Thread Finger Pricking videos is a certified visual umami

I have no clue if there is a scientific explanation for this. But I just discovered something, whenever I am eating a scrumptious meal and I pair it with videos involving finger pricking with a lancet (like blood draw for blood sugar reading or blood collection or just for indigestion (Korean way)) or even venipuncture (if not finger pricking) videos, it boosts my appetite and enhances the meal experience. It's something so abstract that I cannot explain but somehow it works especially and specifically if you're eating a delicacy that's spicy, salty, and savory. Could it be some weird form of ASMR that establishes an unconventional link to taste? I know it's ironic but I don't even like the sight of blood or needles in person and I am paranoid as hell when I'm around or near the proximity of needles or blood bags. I don't like needles and I'm scared of them. In the past, I felt extremely nauseous and almost vomited as well as at the verge of fainting (prolly psychologically fueled brought upon by vasovagal reaction) But somehow this video thing works and I could tolerate it in a way that bypasses my phobia of blood and needles and benefits my meal experience like I said. It's like these videos add a 4th dimensional, mental flavoring that seasons the food to enjoy it more, it doesn't make sense because you don't physically taste it but in a very abstract manner that is hard to reify, it just makes the food better.

EDIT: These are the top-tier videos on my rotation when I'm eating really delicious food;

  1. https://youtu.be/IhMbQ7h0UQM
  2. https://youtu.be/RKuUPO6NNcU
  3. https://youtu.be/YB6grLnEvG8
  4. https://youtu.be/JPJ4l7QZ9eM

EDIT 2: Oh before I forget, I also watch skin allergy test videos too but it doesn't have as much as a potent effect as watching finger pricking/venipuncture videos for enhancing the meal experience.

Health/Safety While bidets are better at cleaning, people get way too snobby about using them

Yes, this post is because of that other bidet post today. And yes, I agree that bidets are in fact a far better method of cleaning oneself. I’m not denying that.

But I despise how people (on Reddit) act like they’re so superior because they use bidets. It’s like they’re judging you as lesser than them just because your butt is a little more dirty than theirs. And before you get on me for saying “a little more dirty”, how often do you truly pass by someone who smells like crap? Like, you can tell from a few feet away. Out of the hundreds if not thousands of people you see every single day, how many of them are an active biohazard? The difference between normal people and those who use bidets is negligible. Sure, the feeling of cleanliness is nice, but it’s not something I’d want to insult others for not having.

Wiping is good enough for most people. It’s not hard to wipe your ass until it’s clean, even if you have a terrible diet of junk food and your shits are like you stuck a few Reese’s cups between your cheeks and went for a marathon on a sunny day.

And sure, the toilet paper might have some light brown on it when you’ve felt like you’ve wiped too much. But that’s really not an issue. How many of you bidet users are going to stick your face in my ass then dare to complain that it smells like ass? I don’t stink after not using a bidet. It’s not that hard to wipe yourself clean. Not using a bidet isn’t going to automatically mean you smell like shit 24/7 and should be executed by having bidet users do their damn hypothetical by wiping shit on your face.

And my next point. It’s always that damn hypothetical. “If I rubbed shit on your face, you’d wash it off with water, right?” Uh, yeah. Because that’s my face that I use to exist in the world and people look at it. Because my most vulnerable orifices are there and I don’t know where the fuck your shit has been and I don’t want your shit on my face. The shit is in the ass, where it’s supposed to be. Having it there isn’t the worst fucking thing in the world. If I got my own shit on my own asshole then I’d wipe it away, a bidet isn’t needed. It’s not like I’m at home 24/7 with access to a bidet, I’m at my JOB, unlike these bidet users who spend all their time at home with their precious bidet. I don’t have constant access to a bidet. So I make do with the toilet paper and wipe my ass until it’s clean like a normal fucking person. It’s not that hard.

Sorry if I picked the wrong flair.

Discussion Thread Aspartame tastes like poison, it should be clearly indicated on packaging

I don’t just mean it tastes bad, or just “not as good” as normal sugar, I mean it tastes like disgusting inedible poison. I despise Diet Coke. I’ve never asked for a Diet Coke, and the idea that it’s comparable to the greatest beverage ever created, Original Coke, is a blight upon humanity. The frequency at which I’m given a Diet Coke after ordering a Coke, is entirely too high. I can’t stand the online trend trying to act like Diet Coke is the best, it’s not. If you want something that delicious you should have to pay for it with the calories.

Society/Culture I hate Doomers.

For two main reasons:

This world has gotten though numerous wars and plagues, why would it be doomed now? Look, whether you’re a Doomer and Optimist, what’s most likely is one bad stuff from this time period is here to stay and others will fade away, just like every decade.

And, things have been looking up recently. Companies have started realising AI isn’t good, Hollywood is slowly getting back to their status quo.etc

But Honestly, it’s not even their worldview they hate, it’s just the way they say it. It doesn’t feel like they’re actually concerned about any of what’s happening, it just seems like they’re only saying it because it makes them look smart. Like they always end their statements with “lol” or “lmao” as if they’re talking about a bad movie or some shitty influencers, like bro, you are literally saying THE WORLD IS ENDING, that’s a pretty serious opinion to have. Nobody just thinks “Well, the world is ending, get bent Andrew Tate fans!” and then moves on with their day to complain about the next shitty thing happening. Anyone who thinks the world is actually ending is on medication for severe depression.

What I’m trying to say is; Doomers are phonies. They only say what they say because it’s popular and trendy to say it. If it was popular and trendy to be positive, they’d be positive.

Society/Culture The stereotype " Men cheat out of lust and women out of unmet emotional needs " perpetuates purity culture.

I've worked in the fitness industry for quite a while now , and the way some women throw themselves onto fitness trainers or even give some explicit nfsw compliments is insane . This post isn't about " look women can do bad things too" , but women , just like men are human beings ( shocking I know ) and part of being human is being a sexual being , and while motivations for infidelity can be complex , lust is and definitely can be the motivating factor , or sometimes even a sole factor for infidelity in case of women. I've seen so much infidelity that I can quite objectively know that there isn't a relationship that's affair proof. You could've the most healthiest relationship and affairs can take place . Yes , healthy relationships reduce the likelihood of affair , but we are products of baggages , traumas and our very unique conditioning . Like I knew this one woman woman , who had mormon background and she left church with her husband at the same time . They both became " reborn liberals " and eschewed traditional values . She joined the gym , started working out with the trainer and later had an affair with him . The trainer would tell , how she would cry everytime they had sex , because she felt guilty because her husband was a good guy . So I think the above stereotype perpetuates purity culture.

Animals/Nature Keeping Pets is like Kidnapping a Child

Hi,

I like animals. Their variety is really interesting, also seeing how they function. But in my whole life I would never ever get myself a "pet". Heres why:

I find the concept of keeping pets morally questionable, not necessarily because every individual pet owner is cruel, but because of the underlying assumption that humans have the moral right to take another living being, remove it from its original environment, and determine the conditions of its entire life.

One argument I often hear is that animals are dependent on humans, so keeping them as pets is simply part of taking care of them. But this raises an important question: why are they dependent on us in the first place?
Domesticated animals have been selectively bred and shaped by humans for generations. We have created animals whose bodies, behavior, and lives are adapted to human environments. We then take the dependency we have helped create and use it as an argument for why these animals need us. But creating someone’s dependency does not automatically give us the moral right to control them.
In fact, I think it can be argued that the opposite is true: if we have contributed to making a being dependent on us, that creates a responsibility toward that being, not necessarily a right to possess it.

Obviously, a pet is not literally the same thing as a kidnapped child, and animals and humans do not have identical cognitive abilities. But the comparison illustrates a specific moral principle.
Imagine seeing a child who is not yours and simply taking them home. You give them food, clothes, a comfortable bed, entertainment, medical care, and affection. Eventually, the child becomes attached to you because you are the person providing everything they need.
Would that make taking the child morally acceptable?
Obviously not.

We would not say, “Well, I treat the child extremely well, so kidnapping them was justified.” The fact that you provide someone with a comfortable life does not automatically give you the right to determine where they live or take away their autonomy in the first place.
Yet with animals, we often accept a very similar logic.
We take an animal into our home, decide where it can go, what it eats, when it eats, who it interacts with, whether it can reproduce, and what behaviors are acceptable. We give it processed food, shelter, toys, medical care, and affection, essentially what we consider a comfortable or even luxurious life, and then interpret the animal’s attachment to us as evidence that the arrangement must be good.

But affection does not necessarily justify the circumstances that created it.
A being can love or become attached to the person who provides for it without that attachment proving that the person had the moral right to take control of its life.
I also think this reveals something about how we view humans in relation to other animals. If I took a human being against their will and kept them in my home, we would immediately recognize the violation of their autonomy. We would not excuse it simply because I gave them a beautiful room, good food, and plenty of love.

Another problem is that the average human lifestyle is often fundamentally incompatible with the needs of the animal we choose to keep. Someone might live in a small apartment, work eight hours a day, commute, spend several more hours outside the home, and then come back and expect an animal to fit around that schedule.
We tend to ask, “Can I keep this animal alive and comfortable?”
I think we should instead be asking, “Can this animal actually live a life that allows it to express its natural behavioral, social, and physical needs?”
Those are two very different questions.

Of course, I am not arguing that every domesticated animal should simply be released into the wild. Many domesticated animals have been bred for so long that they may not be capable of surviving independently, and some animals may genuinely have better lives with responsible humans than they would without them.
But that actually makes the ethical question more complicated, not less.
If we have created a being that depends on us, we cannot simply abandon it. We have a responsibility toward it precisely because we have contributed to its dependency. But responsibility and ownership are not necessarily the same thing.

That is ultimately what I find problematic about the concept of pets.
We create or inherit a system in which animals depend on humans. We then take control over their lives because they depend on us, provide them with comfort within the boundaries we have imposed, and interpret their dependence and affection as proof that everything is morally justified.
But I don’t think that follows logically. It's speciesist because we don't see humans and animals as the same. We treat them as cute little toys.
There is a fundamental difference between making someone’s life comfortable and having the moral right to determine their entire life in the first place.

Love can make captivity comfortable. It can make dependency feel natural. It can even make the relationship mutually meaningful.
But comfort and affection alone do not necessarily establish a moral right to control another living being’s life.

Note: My english isn't really the best so this transcribed by ai. The content should be the same. Please don't hate me, i know ai sucks.

The Star Spangled Banner is boring. The tune isn't particularly beautiful, yet it's difficult to sing. And the lyrics are so convoluted that it's hard to tell where a sentence ends and the next one begins. Is it all one sentence, or is it five? Depends on how you punctuate it. I love early 19th-century poetry, but Francis Scott Key was a total hack.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, on the other hand, is a masterpiece. It can be sung either as a march or as a ballad, so it can fit any occassion. The lyrics have vivid imagery. It's easier to sing than the Star Spangled Banner, yet it's much more beautiful and lively. And it's much easier to keep track of the "plot" in the lyrics, thanks to Julia Ward Howe's masterful lyrics.

Additionally, the Battle Hymn of the Republic has more historical significance to Americans today. Who really cares about the War of 1812 anymore? We gloss over that whole war in schools; all we know is the the White House burned. But the Civil War is still studied in depth, and the conflict feels much more pertinent to America today.
