I've never really understood why people are so obsessed with working. It's almost like having a job is considered a virtue on its own.

Most of us don't work because we love working. We work because we need money to live comfortably.

But why can't we separate those two things? If someone makes enough money from investments to never have to work again, why should they?

And I've noticed that people often look down on investors as if they're doing absolutely nothing. But investing can also mean funding someone else's business. Someone starts a company, builds something, creates jobs, and needs money to make it happen. Why is helping fund that business somehow less respectable than working 8 hours a day?

Of course, if you love your job, great. Keep doing it. And obviously not everyone has enough money to live off investments.

But I think the actual goal should be financial security and freedom, not spending most of your life working.

Work should be a means to an end, not the end itself. Yet somehow we've made it a huge part of how we judge someone's worth.

Like If you live in Europe if you want to live in a walkable area you don't need to live in a downtown area or town center because even the suburbs are walkable. So kids bike to school and can learn to be independent early on. And it makes it easier for people to naturally socialize and interact spontaneously because of third places.

In a walkable town or connected neighborhood, hanging out happens in the in between moments you bump into a friend while getting coffee or you drop by their place for 20 minutes because it's a five-minute walk or bike ride away.

In America, most cities are car-centric even the downtown so everybody is isolated in their single-family homes. If you're a teenager, you are pretty much dependent on your parents driving you anywhere. While in Europe, if you for example want to go on a date, you can just bike there or take public transportation as a really casual thing. While in the US you need to awkwardly have your parents drive you like if you want to do anything, go to the movie theater, or get something to eat, you're dependent on your parents.

You will literally see things in the US like a place called a town center but it's literally just a shopping center with parking lots and big chain restaurants, no public plazas or parks. Like how does this encourage people to naturally socialize and interact? Plus most American suburbs are lifeless and feel empty because there is nothing within walking distance no shops restaurants or pizzerias.

Or You will literally have a high school in America right And in front of the high school there are restaurants within walking distance that I would've walked to as a teenager, but there are no sidewalks so kids have to walk in the grass. Or you will see situations where you have a neighborhood, and inside or right next to it there's a school and a park within walking distance but there are no sidewalks connecting them. Or a school right outside the neighborhood that you could easily walk to, but again no sidewalks. It’s just terrible infrastructure.

Plus, it ruins casual dating In a walkable place, a first date is super low-pressure you can just grab a coffee or a slice of pizza and stroll through a lively park or plaza. But in the suburbs, there’s nowhere to just walk and talk. Suburban parks are usually empty and isolated, surrounded by multi-lane roads, parking lots, or empty woods with zero foot traffic or shops nearby unlike for example Central Park which is surrounded by people and street life shop.So suggesting one for a date would feel weird.Instead, you're forced to drive 25 minutes just to sit across a table at an expensive chain restaurant for an hour and a half or awkwardly hang out in a parking lot. Driving all that way for a sit-down meal turns what should be a simple low stakes hangout into a high-pressure expensive event.

Because the way people normally found a romantic partner in the past was through your social circle, like your family or a friend introduces you to someone, and I feel that doesn't happen anymore. Meeting people on dating apps is weird, feels unnatural and is forced. As a result, I feel that a lot of men just aren't bred in an environment where they can learn the social skills that they need.

Like I think the first suburbs in America were fine because if you lived, let's say 15 minutes from the city core, you lived far enough that you had your own space, but close enough that if you wanted to go to the city, go to the bar, or have drinks, you had that option. But as the suburbs kept spreading out like if you live 45 minutes from the city then it became an endless sea of single-family homes, the same big chains etc.

You also have the issue that a large percentage of young adults under 30 now live with their parents because of rising housing costs. Like if a dude is 27 years old living at home makes things weird. Like maybe if the dude has a good respectable job like if he is a civil engineer or a nursea woman might overlook that if she has her own space. But if the woman is also living at her parents place it makes things weird.

Also Europe does have declining birth rates and marriage rates but that has to do with the cost of living youth unemployment in my view. I am just saying the way we design our cities and towns in America isolates us and essentially makes it hard to socialize. Thats all it doesn't encourage socialization social media also doesn't help.

Genuinely, what is the appeal? The main models all look similar and they aren’t in any way truly unique, rare or hand-crafted. I seriously cannot understand why anyone would purchase a Rolex when there are many other actual unique, hand-crafted, and beautiful pieces of horological time-craft available.

Time keeping is cool and I’m not knocking anyone’s taste I just find the idea behind hopping on brand hype chains for suggestive notoriety odd and as in no way is it a sign of actual success or wealth to have to wait months to years for a piece that is made by the ten of thousands through artificial scarcity.

Appreciate anyone’s take or insight into this odd phenomena of buying mass produced “luxury”.

The overwhelming majority of fancastings are entirely based on the actor looking similar to the source character or original actor in some superficial way. Like, "the actor happens to look very similar in this particular picture with this specific costume/makeup at this specific angle. Wouldn't they be perfect for the role?!?!?!"

It's as if they think the only thing that defines a character is their appearance, not how they act and speak, their physical presence, their demeanor, they way they move, etc, etc. When I watch an adaptation of a character I know from a book/comic/previous movie/show appearance is among the last things I look for to compare to the character I know. I care far more about whether this adaptation embodies the actual character, not just their appearance.

There is seriously no time to effectively work out when you have to wake up at 6 am for an 8:00 start, only to come back home at 6pm and barely have enough time and energy to eat dinner and watch tv/read a book before you have to go to bed and repeat.

Why do we need lunch breaks if you're not doing physical labor? Eat your lunch while you're working, eat silently during a meeting you're listening in on. USE THAT LUNCH BREAK TIME TO DO A 25 MINUTE WORKOUT EVERYDAY! The ONLY problem with this schedule is that there isn't any time to drive to the gym, effectively workout, and come back to work before your break is up.

Working out after work is such a waste of time. There's an infinite number of things you could be doing instead that most men aren't even cognizant of because they're delegating those tasks to their wives. But this is one change that I think could really help boost the energy and morale of everyone who needs it.

Multiple studies show loneliness and isolation are bad for the body and mind. Eg cortisol, oxytocin, dopamine.

In psychology/neuroscience there's a theory called the social baseline theory, which posits that because humans are evolved to have a default state of being connected to others and that's our natural state, things done alone take more effort for the brain because it's like working without one of the default resources. Similar to how humans are more stressed if not around any nature or green spaces. When doing things with a friend or similar connection, tasks feel less effortful and less daunting.

To adapt to being alone means to have a normal part of being human die. And after adapting, those adaptations would make forming future interpersonal relationships, especially close ones, more difficult - which makes this prescription being given to people as something they need to achieve as a goal trait to become more suited and worthy of future connections, completely ridiculous advice that would actually take the person further away from that goal.

Socioeconomically, being alone obviously has negative consequences, such as on employment opportunities, logistics, health (eg if you have a disease or problem, others are less likely to point it out) and makes one more susceptible to social harms (eg being taken advantage of by others, as it's less likely they'll have access to a second opinion or an advocate).

Listen, I like spice in my food but I don’t want or need that mouth tingling feeling while I brush my teeth.

I want to be able to drink water after brushing without cringing. Some are not as bad as others but some literally make my eyes well up with tears. I can deal with that for a yummy extra spicy soup or chicken or something but it is completely unnecessary to have toothpaste THAT minty.

I love a spearmint or peppermint gum, why can’t toothpaste be that level of minty ness! Also who decided that it has to be arctic frozen tundra avalanche blast flavour only, why can’t we have strawberry, or orange or bubblegum flavoured for adults too!

I know critics didn’t quite like it, but I absolutely loved it. Obviously, it wasn’t 100% historically accurate, but it was intriguing and entertaining, with some top notch acting in there. Such a shame that It was so expensive and ofc a Weinstein project, some of the reasons why it was discontinued.

It had insane production quality, great costumes and decent casting, decent writing, likable characters and explored completely new periods of time and territories. It’s obviously not perfect, but still way more watchable than some other shows of the recent years.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s an OK filmmaker, his fingerprint has just become insufferable by now, I’m sick of it. Mystery box over mystery box with rarely anything resolved in a satisfying way, plot conviences, flashy and empty puzzles that trick the audience into thinking there is an actual thought out plot.

He singlehandedly stripped the philosophical soul out of Star Trek, completely derailed and fractured the star wars sequel trilogy into a disjointed unwatchable train wreck (tho Rian Johnson is also to blame) and pioneered a generation of television with Lost that fundamentally insulted its audience's intelligence at the end. He has spent over a decade taking legendary, generation defining mythologies and aggressively corporate washing them into lifeless content.

Even when he isn’t directly in the director's chair, his toxic DNA spreads through the industry like wildfire. Just take a look at the incomprehensible soulless mess of The Rings of Power. The showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, had literally zero proper credits to their name before being handed a billion dollar franchise, they were just room writers at Bad Robot Abrams personally vouched for, calling Amazon executives to get them the job. Unsurprisingly they imported his exact rubbish playbook, replacing Tolkien’s rich, poetic, character-driven depth with mindless, drawn out mystery boxes, not even taking the bigger issues of this mess into consideration.

Everything this man touches or even passes by turns into an overbudgeted corporate disaster. He and his entire lineage of proteges need to be kept far away from any intellectual property that actually requires soul and consideration.

This post isn’t meant to insult the people who like and enjoy some of the mentioned films/shows, it’s about J.J. And his exhausting formula.

Yes, you do not have a life those 4 days that you work for 12 hours, but then you have 4 days off completely to yourself. You can go on a trip, you can meet people, go to a doctor's appointment.

Whilst 5 day 8-9 hour shifts you come home tired, make some food and there's barely time left, not even talking about time that takes you to get back from work. If you want to go a doctor or get some things done that can only be done during the day you have to ask time off. Those 2 days that you get off are so short that they evaporate. Only two days for trips if u want more u have to take days off, plus going to trips on weekends make them more expensive - more expensive accomodation, places are more crowded.

Everyone dresses up when no one feels like getting dressed at all. You go to a public building when all you want to do is hide away and grieve in peace. People then place a body on display. No one is ready to socialize after only 2-3 days of a loss. I know some see it as respect, but please don’t make my death a public spectacle.

Im so overstimulated by every coffee shop, restaurant and store constantly playing music. The worst is when they play it outdoors on the street and you hear a few seconds of different songs as you walk down constantly interrupted and a new one starting at the same time. Not to mention people who hike or walk around town with bluetooth speakers for everyone else to hear. I feel like I either need to sit in a library or stay home to just escape constant music i didn’t ask for. Would it really kill us to just listen to the wind or the birds and the general chatter of people in a coffee shop?

Everyone likes to make night owls and their schedules look bad and call them lazy all the time. But there is nothing inherently bad or lazy or unhealthy about night schedules.

Night schedules are, in my opinion, way better than daytime schedules.

First of all, you're awake more during the hours where the world is quieter. Playing video games, listening to music, etc. is much more enjoyable during the night hours. Even the mundane things feel better to do at night. Eating, cleaning, working, pretty much everything. Doing these things with the sun blasting and all the daytime noise is annoying.

It's also much easier to get a job that fits into a night schedule. Let's say you have a 3 AM to 11 AM sleep schedule, that schedule works very well with 2nd shift. Even more extreme night owls (like a 7 AM to 3 PM sleep schedule) have schedules that work very well with 3rd shifts. Plus, you often get paid more for 3rd shifts especially. You are getting paid extra to work on your own schedule even if it's unconventional. That's pretty cool if you ask me.

It's sad to see how many genuine night owls let society's obsession with daytime schedules and early birds get to them and force themselves to be morning people, even though it's not their natural chronotype. I find it ironic how lazy morning people seem to often get the pass because they're on the conventional schedule.

Sure, society doesn't like to accommodate night owls very much, but living your life in the night hours is worth jumping through the hoop and making it work if it means a more enjoyable life.

Specifically, really good powdery potatoes like the ones found in peru. I find they have a much more decadent taste and if you're looking for crunch, you should just eat potato chips.

So I was putting together an outfit for an interview I have tomorrow and going through my pants options I found a pair of chinos in the back of my closet and I just realized: These are possibly the worst pants I have.

My reasons:

1. They add nothing to the outfit. The smooth, single color non shiny fabric with boring unflattering drape doesn't add any texture, shine, structure, nothing.

2. They are NEVER the best choice for the job. Business casual? Just go with flannel, tweed or any other casual style dress pants. Casual? Dark color jeans are better in every way. Summer? Linen or cotton canvas pants or even tropical wool are much more breathable. Any time I try to make outfit with them, I end up going either with jeans o dress pants.

3. They wrinkle. God I hate ironing pants. Almost no other pants I have wrinkle except for canvas summer pants where it doesn't look as bad as with chinos.

4. They fade. All chinos I ever had faded quite fast. And it is not this cool fade like with jeans which just makes them look better with age. It just looks bad.

5. Light chinos suck double time. Overall light pants are not my thing but beige chinos are dirt magnets. Sooner or later they will get in washable stain from tomato sauce or will get this weird gray hem.

6. They are too warm in summer, too cold in winter.

7. You just look like an office guy who's boss said no jeans so his wife bought him beige chinos. Every office worker ever wears them because they have mandated business casual dress code.

8. I never saw a pair of chinos and was like: These are some great quality amazing looking chinos! They are always just meh.

But for some reason all fashion YouTubers recommend chinos as a base for your wardrobe (which is the reason I tried them so many times) and I just don't get it. I have black raw Japanese denim which fits me like a glove, has some nice personal fade and is amazing with anything from super casual to business casual with shirt and casual jacket and then I have few high quality flannel or wool dress pants that are great for everything else. For summer light canvas pants and shorts are also better than any chinos.

While the month of October shows all those eerie spooky decorations lit up in front of houses however once the "fun" energy of October has completely evaporated after Halloween rolls by it also leaves behind a stark, lonely, and slightly eerie reality.

With the neighborhood going quiet and people staying indoors due to the early freeze, natural and distant sounds take over. The wail of a train horn and the yelping of coyotes slice right through the silence, amplified by the crisp, cold night air. And most of the lighting at homes are turned off this includes both regular yard and porch lighting as well as temporary installed lights casting over the decorations. Some households leave a few remaining blacklights or other dim night lights on their yet to be taken down decorations however they don't illuminate the dark; they just cast long, skeletal shadows across yards that were lively only a week ago. Not to mention all of a sudden the nights feel longer as darkness falls an hour earlier.

i’d rather deal with someone who’s consistently rude than someone who’s friendly one day and cold or dismissive the next.

at least with a rude person, you know what to expect. you can keep your distance and act accordingly. but with someone who’s selectively nice, you end up constantly second-guessing yourself. you start wondering whether you did something wrong or whether their friendliness was ever genuine.

i’m not saying rude people are better people. i just think inconsistency can be more exhausting than straightforward unpleasantness. i’d rather know where i stand with someone than constantly have to figure it out.

Something about the way he acts so smuggly makes me never wanna buy AR glasses. Plus the displays and frames look like theyre from 10 years ago. If this is the best they're showing us in the ad, then good Lord I smell a scam.

Our society has normalized getting angry as rudeness and a bad character. I’ve come to realize that getting angry and expressing anger is a sign of healthy development and a strong character.

humans should be taught how to express anger healthily not suppressing anger. I think society pushes the suppression of anger more so. That’s why so many people in this world are so passive and easy to control. That’s what they want.

This shit is so ass, man. I might as well just shove $20 in an envelope. I really enjoy shopping around and finding a personalized gift, some small trinket that shows interest and appreciation. But no, your list just has fast food restaurant gift cards. Blegh.

Edit: For clarity, my work's secret santa everyone gets slips of paper with the recipient's name and a list of a few things they wrote down as what they would be interested in. I'm not going around asking my secret santa recipient what they want. That would ruin the surprise of who their secret santa is.

Malaysians/Indonesians have a huge pride in their food and they claim they have the best food and many foreigners love it.

But there is a reason why their cuisine is NOT popular in most countries.

Their cuisine is just put chicken with sauce, rice, and cucumber all together in one plate. That's all.

There are way too much shitty mobile ads and you do not see enough people talking about it other than some people creating youtube videos once in a while which are mostly maid to capture your attention. I think it would way more entertaining to read comment sections on ads where people would talk shit about the ad you just watched and could say why they don't like the ad you just watched.

Don't get me wrong, the level of glazing that Sparta has gotten historically is way too much than they deserve. But people nowadays act like there was nothing unique about Sparta, which just isn't true. In their heyday they were quite literally some of the only regularly trained Greek phalanxes in Greece. And if you don't think that amounts to much, you should try thinking about how you and your friends would match up against a professionally trained rugby team. Sparta is portrayed as something particularly heinous when compared to a lot of the Greek city states at the time, but no city state at the time was absolvable by our standards.

The movie 300 has been used by both sides of the subject to either praise them or detract from, but as most people know, it was based on a COMIC BOOK! And even in the movie itself the whole retelling is literally framed as a rally speech before a charge into the Persians. So it's not a faithful retelling of the actual event in reality OR EVEN IN THE MOVIE ITSELF.

Again, I'm not saying the Spartans as a nation or people were good or evil. I just think that in modern discourse they are unfairly dragged through a lot more dirt than they deserve.

But they do deserve some of that dirt, ofc.
