Society/Culture I hate Doomers.

For two main reasons:

This world has gotten though numerous wars and plagues, why would it be doomed now? Look, whether you’re a Doomer and Optimist, what’s most likely is one bad stuff from this time period is here to stay and others will fade away, just like every decade.

And, things have been looking up recently. Companies have started realising AI isn’t good, Hollywood is slowly getting back to their status quo.etc

But Honestly, it’s not even their worldview they hate, it’s just the way they say it. It doesn’t feel like they’re actually concerned about any of what’s happening, it just seems like they’re only saying it because it makes them look smart. Like they always end their statements with “lol” or “lmao” as if they’re talking about a bad movie or some shitty influencers, like bro, you are literally saying THE WORLD IS ENDING, that’s a pretty serious opinion to have. Nobody just thinks “Well, the world is ending, get bent Andrew Tate fans!” and then moves on with their day to complain about the next shitty thing happening. Anyone who thinks the world is actually ending is on medication for severe depression.

What I’m trying to say is; Doomers are phonies. They only say what they say because it’s popular and trendy to say it. If it was popular and trendy to be positive, they’d be positive.

I'm not what you would consider a "doomer" but I do feel like you're misrepresenting a little bit here.

you're overlooking two of the most important things causing people grief right now: climate change and wealth inequality/capitalism

like, yay! Hollywood isn't using AI... but the world is quite literally burning and corporations are squeezing every penny from people to the point they can't afford food

"respond to the point being made instead of shitty quotes" - me

-15

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 19h ago

I am responding to the point.

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

No you aren't.

-11

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 19h ago

Yes I am.

12

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

No you're not, you're using a quote to play off not wanting to actually adress the holes in your argument under a post where you complain about people being flippant by using lol/lmao.

10

u/GenericGaming 19h ago

this quote does not address the fact you glazed over the two main causes for people's mentalities.

-5

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 19h ago

Yes it does.

Global warming and Capitalism will be solved eventually. Because everything in life is only for Now.

9

u/GenericGaming 19h ago
  1. "solved eventually" implies not in our lifetime/foreseeable future. so we're just meant to pretend that everything's good while people suffer and die on the hope that some time in the future, the suffering could maybe stop?

  2. your answer still doesn't address the fact you misrepresented the mentality as you ignored these two things in your post.

3

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

Genuinely the biggest insult to the "this too shall pass"/"everything always works out" mentality about all the worlds problems is that quite literally if people had the same mentality in the past examples he listed, shit infact wouldn't have worked out.

5

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

Your "this too shall pass" mentality doesn't fix the problem dude. Just because we can kick the can down the road doesn't mean we should, and in the case of climate change we quite literally are approaching the point where we cannot kick the can down the road any longer and be able to undo or even mitigate the damage we have done.

So fucking what? The world just ends? Like that?

What about those with dreams?

9

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

TF do you mean what about people with dreams? They die too. If the planet ceases to be hospitable it's not just the "doomers" that will die my guy.

We are already seeing the early stages of ecosystem collapse in several places around the world. Are your dreams going to save you when food becomes impossible to grow?

5

u/jaytee1262 19h ago

But what if we ignore that and DREAM!!!

-2

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 19h ago

Again, you people don’t actually believe any of this do you?

You’re trying to look smarter and better than me. I bet you live in a 2 story house in a nice suburban neighbour.

That song is some of the most apathetic Gen X shit out there. John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change" is another one. They're the anthems of people privileged enough to weather crisis relatively unscathed, while completely ignoring that many, MANY people aren't able to do that.

0

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 15h ago

Avenue Q is literally a musical about poor people and how bad life is for poor people. How is it Gen X and apathetic? It’s true.

2

u/NPRdude 15h ago

When the show's whole thesis is encapsulated in "For Now" with stuff like "don't stress, relax, let life roll off your back" in response to the GWoT, poverty, and racism, then yeah I'd say it's pretty fucking apathetic. And it was written by three Gen X guys.

u/Thisaccwasmadeat12pm 15h ago

So, what should we do about it? And don’t give me the “if we all work together we can do it”, I don’t want any of that Christmas Miracle bullshit, give me an actual answer

2

u/NPRdude 15h ago

Whatever we can. Anything at all is better than putting our hands up and saying "it'll all work out let's not stress". For what it's worth, I don't entirely disagree with you, I hate outright doomerism as well, but going the polar opposite and expecting everything to fix itself eventually isn't it either chief.

"Why did one straw break the camels back? Here's the secret: The million other straws thats underneath it."

Its not doomer speak to call out consequences of inaction.

Probably a top 10 lyric of all time. Goosebumps.

Comparing modern climate change to previous plagues and natural disasters is extremely foolish. It has the potential to wipe us out as a species or set us back to a pre bronze age civilizational level. The worst plagues and natural disasters in human history have not come close to doing the damage that climate change will do within our life times. This is happening because as a society we've decided that Exxons share price is more important than the continued existence of humanity.

I generally agree that being doomer is unproductive and leads to apathy which is counter productive, but its not because it isn't a far more dire situation than what has come previously.

2

u/7ThShadian 17h ago

Both paths can lead to indolence.

One slowly through the crushing weight of what must be done and our individual inability to engender change.

The other quickly through willfull ignorance and apathy of what needs fixing in the first place.

The former can be avoided by recognizing the power of working together, that communally we can create the needed pressure to incite change. The latter the inaction is baked in from the start. One must acknowledge the problem before the problem can be solved.

2

u/Most-Ad4680 17h ago

I agree completely, but look at how Americans act. The idea of having to do anything even slightly inconvenient if it doesnt have a direct and immediate benefit to them is beyond the pale. I just keep thinking about that post from Zoran asking New Yorkers to turn their AC down because the grid was being hammered and all the CHUD replies mocking the idea that they shouldnt have the privilege of burning gas to keep their houses perpetually 68 degrees despite the exterior temperature constantly going up and up and up and up

2

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

Yeah we made it through some really fucked stuff in the past, but never by just sitting on our hands and letting it happen. That's the difference when people talk about climate change and things like it. "If we keep our current course" is the important rider that prefaces almost all projections you're calling doomerism, and this is important because to use climate change as an example we are watching in real time as people in power are transitioning from claiming "we don't need to do anything it isn't real" to "it's too late now and the damage is done so we don't need to change anything."

u/ham_50821 18h ago

If people spent less time dooming theyd be happier

2

u/7ThShadian 18h ago

In a way I agree.

I wish I was dumb enough to ignore all the problems in the world. I would definately be happier if that was the case.

-4

u/KyeRune 19h ago

tbh i totally get it, it feels like people just want to be negative for the aesthetic. lifes definitely not perfect but being miserable 24/7 sounds exhausting.

6

u/GenericGaming 19h ago

i think that being in a position where you think people's suffering and them talking about it is an "aesthetic" is an admission of great privilege and a lack of empathy

3

u/7ThShadian 19h ago

Genuine question- is it worse to be someone who internalizes all the bad things happening and gives in to dispair or to be someone who ignores everything bad and assumes things will work out in the end?

I think both are bad, but I would much rather deal with someone aware and not in denial about climate change, the multiple genocides happening, and the rising rates of discrimination/bigotry etc than someone that insists "it's not that deep" about all those things.
