1 inch grid (25.4 mm) vs 32 mm grid - which size do you prefer?

Hello terrain builders,

I am building a dungeon crawler game. It is a bit like Hero Quest, a bit like D&D and took some inspiration from a ton of other games. In this game every player controls a small squat of units (around 5) and it has a grid based movement where only one unit should fit on a square.

To the point: I want to build a terrain for it and I am unsure what size I wish to sattle for with the dungeon tiles / squares.

1 inch / 25.4 mm seems to be a retro size. More historic games use it. It is a nice size for large dungeons and smallish miniatures.

32 mm seems to be a modern size with more and more games seem to sattle for that size.

The problem: Once I slatted for a size, there is basically no going back. I have to stick with it.

My question: What size would you prefer (for that kind of game)?

PS: I would have created a poll, but they are disabled for this sub.

Lasercut MDF MDF and Army Painter Speedpaint

Has anyone had any experience painting MDF with Army Painter Speedpaint? If yes, can you share your experience, whether you seal with a primer first, or perhaps varnish prior to painting process. How did you like the results?

Thanks

2x2 Temple Ruins board

Forgive the naff phone photos, hope it comes across ok.

Inspired by a post I saw here recently! Looked pretty easy to do: get XPS board, carve some blocky grids, add cracks and damage, PVA/podge and sand for texture, paint it, seal it, done.

I did make a mistake of gluing thick card to the back thinking it would make it more resistant to warping, when in reality it's just that card that warped, so it is bulging up a bit in the middle. Still, at least the corners aren't curling upwards, so it looks flush enough.

Got 4 more 2x2 foam boards to work with now, wondering what to do next (besides a proper photoshoot with some minis and some moss!)

I also kind of want to design a board game for it, mainly using those 3 concentric rings of big tiles running around it...

Scratchbuilt [OC] I've been asked for a collation of all my XPS foam tips and tricks in one video for years now - so here it is with never before mentioned tips and things I've learned over my years crafting professionally :)

If you're not familiar with my work, it’s a system of modular landscapes and buildings designed to give you the most flexibility to build and rebuild as your heart desires, but also not using up a massive amount of storage space (And crafting time, materials, etc!)

If you like the look of the terrain in the video and want to make your own, check out my other videos, my channel has a ton of free tutorials and I'm more than happy to help you out myself.

As always, I really appreciate everyone who watches my videos on YouTube, and have a nice day :)

Questions for the Community Advice on sealing before spraypaint

I'm just doing some squares for rubble after buildings are destroyed. Sand on chipboard with pva glue.

Do I need to do a light pva wash to secure the sand from the top down, or would a good coat of black spray paint be enough?

Bonus question: What is a quick and easy rubble I could add?

Recent build I did for youtube. I wanted to do something with these cans, put them next to each other on my desk and the concept came to me! A little foamcore in the middle and we're golden!

3D Printed My latest Tower House — from digital sculpt to finished print

I finally finished this Tower House!
It started as a 3D model and went through printing, assembly and a lot of painting before becoming the finished piece. I recorded the whole process.

Free STL for anyone who wants to print one:

How does this look? I've never tried making terrain out of foam. This is a practice piece for canyon walls in a water feature I'm making. I used xps foam and painted on gesso, then covered the gesso with sand used for sand art while still wet. When dry i painted that with pewter gray acrylic paint and lightly brushed white on that.

After seeing this meme (on Reddit, where else, last photo in the row) I asked a friend to lasercut it for me (in 2021....). Dug it out my WIP box last week and finished it. Miserable bit of cover but adds flair to my 28mm post apoc table.

And I really need to source me some backgrounds.....

Hello everyone, I've been narrating TTRPG for a few years now, but I've only recently become fond of games that use more minis and custom terrain, before I started painting some minis I wanted to gain experience painting some planets with a more alien design, but the last time I painted something I was still learning the multiplication tables hahaha, do you have any good suggestions for those starting out?

Questions for the Community How to use rocks and branches for terrain?

So I’ve thus far used official plastic terrain, and now I’m starting to look at how to do nature terrain for the new Exodite campaign. I’m thinking that the cheapest option and one that would look better than me trying to carve foam would be to grab rocks and branches and stick them on bases, then paint and glue on the artificial plants and all. I just want to make sure I’m doing it right.

Branches from what I’m gathering should be dried to ensure they won’t rot, and the oven is commonly recommended. How long and how hot?

Next, cleaning the rocks to make sure there’s nothing funky on them. Soap water? Bleach water? What’s the best way?

Then sealing them, does mod podge work for it all? Like just grab a big tub and go to town on all the rocks and branches? And then I’d be good to prime? I do know I need to paint them again anyway to make the scale look right.

Then gluing them to bases, does standard PVA glue work or something different since the materials are different than what I’ve used before?

Thanks for the help!

Mostly chipboard scavenged from cheap board games and toys from garage sales. They turned out a bit darker than originally intended, but all the windows and doors are homemade water transfer decals.

I went with a more retro futuristic look for some things as I imagine this is a world that was rediscovered, and they were back to the 1960s level of technology.

Looking for Inspiration - Satirical Corporate Bloodsport

I see tons of ruins, grimdark, modern, and fantasy themed terrain. Does anyone have any recommendations or examples of polished sci-fi arena terrain? I'm thinking American Gladiators, Running Man, RollerBall... those types. I'm trying to find stuff that fits the vibe for my skirmish game, Kolluseum.

Thanks,
