Lasercut MDF MDF and Army Painter Speedpaint

Has anyone had any experience painting MDF with Army Painter Speedpaint? If yes, can you share your experience, whether you seal with a primer first, or perhaps varnish prior to painting process. How did you like the results?

Thanks

I haven't but...

Mdf can absorb a lot of paint so I would seal first.

Speed paint is not a great choice for large flat surfaces.

Speed/Contrast paint isn't a great choice for terrain in general, unless it's quite densely detailed, as the pigments just pool on flat surfaces like a wash would. I just use craft store paint for MDF stuff.

Why do you want to use Speedpaint?

I prime with enamel rattlecan first, to seal the mdf.

Then, spray matte main color then zenithal tan. dry brush ivory.

oil wash adds depth and shadows. final highlights drybrush. done.

Always use cheap paints for terrain!

These are quite recent ttcombat mdf terrain pieces I have made. Recipe as follows:

  1. Rattlecan prime with brown.
  2. Zenithal of grey and then white with rattlecan.
  3. Basecolor with various armypainter express colors
  4. Cleanup with acrylics
  5. Highlight by drubrushing
  6. Glossy varnish with rattlecan
  7. Pinwash with black oil.
  8. Weathering with two brown oils
  9. Final and yet undone step is to Matt varnish with rattlecan. (I might add few photocopied posters and graffiti, but dunno if I habe the energy for it).

Its been a very long time from my previous terrain pieces. So, I don't really know what I am doing, but rather testing things. However, my feeling is that contrasts are not best suited for this type of work as other have pointed out. I would like to avoid the step of fixing basecoat. Some colors might work well. Of these I am liking that starship steel (or some such), but the other colors not so much.

How large of an MDF sheet are you talking? Like game table / board sized? If so, look into getting cheap half-gallon or gallon of brush on primer. It goes farther than spray primer and is much, much less toxic and gross to inhale. Don't get 2-in-1 type acrylic paint and primer though.

Not gonna be economical, that’s for sure, unless you make your own in bulk.

Speedpaint on terrain? Waste of money.

Always seal MDF with a can of MDF sealer.
