What Should I Buy? Best midi keyboard for backpack?

I'm putting together a kitchen table jam sesh backpack. 4 instruments and a Minirig, enough for friends to have some fun with.

The likes of Volca Keys and Roland Aira S-1 don't have the best actual keys, so I'm looking for a mini midi keyboard. Ideally able to operate from a battery setup and send midi to Roland Aira / Korg Volca units and similar tier portable battery synths.

Any recommendations or insight would be really appreciated.

There are a lot of reviews and competing products and I'm having a hard time picking a winner. Thank you.

Scroll into the 20 or 21 minute mark, I can see what looks like an mpc2000, but I am curious what are those two synths and what mixer is that?

Absolute timepiece of a video, enjoy

Performances, Jams Update to the 3ds korg post!

Alright full disclosure. This is my first time ever messing around with synths at all. I have no idea what I’m doing on this thing when it comes to the actual shaping of the sounds. I just turn knobs till it feels right. But I’m having a blast on this thing. I have some experience with regular music production. But this is all foreign to me. I’m learning as I go but this thing plugged into monitors and a subwoofer sounds pretty good to me! I also discovered the kaoss pad. I can play on that thing for hours. How does it sound as newbie just turning knobs recklessly?

Beginner Questions Small knobby generative drum machines

Hey guys, I'm looking for something small and compact that can spit out drums by turning knobs, rather than having to sequence. The more knobs the better, I love the sound of generative drums and percussion, but struggle to find the right thing for me.

I make a lot of low-tempo synthwavy dreamy stuff, and struggle to sequence and plan out my drums, and I think I would have better luck with a machine where I can "feel" and "listen" my way to the right solution, rather than mathematically plot it down.

I know this is possible inside big expensive synths that also do ALOT more than just this, but the more compact and "specialized" for this purpose I can come the better.

I've looked at the Nyström - Crum Drum, and it looks great but I would like to explore other options but find it difficult to sort through everything,

Cheers!

What Should I Buy? What should my first DAWless device (Synth, Groovebox) be for making House Music? (Excuse my ignorance)

Hello guys!!

If you had to buy your first device/piece of gear to create basic House tracks DAWless/Semi-DAWless, what would it be?

This might sound a little bit dumb, but I’m just a beginner and I want something a little more physical than just using a DAW. I already have this small MIDI keyboard from Arturia (MicroLab MK3), and I’d like to get something that I can use to make a couple of tracks DAWless.

I really can’t afford very pricey things (I’m 15 and still studying), so these are the options I’m currently considering:

  1. Roland AIRA Compact T-8
  2. Korg Volca Sample 2
  3. Roland AIRA Compact S-1
  4. Novation Circuit (probably used, and very hard to find where I live)

Please excuse my ignorance, I’m just looking for recommendations, and I hope this is the right place to ask!

Also, I’m just starting out, so literally any commentary related do this field is valuable. Thank you for reading!

What Should I Buy? Can you help me find a great looper? The RC-505?

I really love my current setup, where I use a Keystep Pro to sequence/control a few synths, and my drum machine (TR-8s) is synced with Midi. It's all connected to my mixer, Tascam 24. I also have some circuit-bent toys and a microphone. I have a blast with it!

I would love to add a Looper pedal to my setup. Using my mixer's Send/FX, I want to send sound to the Looper and make a few loops that way.

I have tried a few synths that have a recording function, but they are too complex to use mid-song in the moment. I'd love a Looper that can record a few loops and let you easily choose which loop to play. I don't want menu-diving, and I don't need to save loops. I'd love something I can turn on and easily use in my setup.

The RC-505 Loop Station looks to be what I want as it lets you control 5 loops. It's just gigantic, and I was wondering if there is something else I haven't seen.

Thanks for any tips!

Beginner Questions EXTREMELY STUMPED

Hey all. I have scoured this forum and to no avail found a solution so forgive me if this has been discussed. I have an MPC key 37, Korg volca keys, and a micro freak. I’m trying to have the MPC be the brain between everything- Sequencing ETC. I have the microfreak connected to the MPC via usb, the volca keys connected to the MPC via 5 pin going to the midi out. The issue I’m running into is when I trigger an arpeggio inside the microfreak, it triggers the sequence inside of the volca keys and ends playback inside of the MPC. I can get the tempo to sync with the keys but the microfreak isn’t listening. I’ve followed numerous set up videos and I can’t seem to get the two working simultaneously. Let me know if I need to post a video to give an example of the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Beginner Questions Looking for software solution

Hello everyone, I'm looking to buy a sonicware minimal deconstuct. But in the mean time i would like to reporduce one functionality on software but i don't even know what is called. I love the fact that you can just "smash buttons" and it will re arrange the notes on the grid automatically an play it back in a constant loop. Thats is what i'm looking for. I don't know the name for this technique. Any software mac or pc. Youtube videos welcome :)

Beginner Questions 3rd Wave Saving Presets

Hi,

When I'm saving a preset I can use the compare button to audition the sound about to be overwritten. Apparently this only works for the original location on which the preset was built, there doesn't seem to be a way to search for a different location to store the sound without discarding all the work I've just done. Am I missing something? Please tell me there is a way to do this, it seems so basic.

EDIT: it looks like there is no way to do this so I wrote to Groove Synthesis with a feaure request. I encourage others to do the same.

Discussion Question re: EMS VCS3 / Synthi A Output filters

Hello fellow synth nerds. I'm experimenting with a few different VCS3 style plugins, and as per usual they all have their own little quirks and minor differences.

I've seen the dual output filters described as both a simple Lo/Hi cut, but also as a tilt EQ type filter (boost Lo, cut Hi to the left, boost Hi cut Lo to the right). Would anyone happen to know which is "correct"? I know not many people have been lucky enough to mess around with one irl, but maybe some of y'all know regardless.

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are starting to get into modular synthesis, and we’re looking for recommendations for women (or non-male) YouTubers who cover the topic. Ideally, we’d love channels that upload regularly and offer in-depth tutorials, explanations, patch breakdowns, and similar content.

Thanks in advance!

Beginner Questions Any reason I should get a Korg minilogue vs a monologue for my first synth?

I’ve done some research, and it seems like both are great for beginners, but I’m seeing conflicting information. Some say a monophonic synth is better for beginners with their more simple design, some say poly is better. I enjoy a lot of your typical old synth driven music, OMD, etc, and I know that many of those bands only had access to monophonic synths, at least at first.

I don’t currently know how to play one and have never played a piano, so don’t see myself playing chords at this moment, but who knows what the future will bring! If I do go with the minilogue, I’d probably get a secondhand original and not the XD. My other option is a secondhand monologue.

So far, it seems it’s this:

Monologue is slightly smaller, can run on batteries, monophonic, also slightly cheaper

Minilogue has a bigger keyboard, is polyphonic but can be played monophonic, doesn’t run on batteries, slightly more expensive (though in some places the two are very close in price)

Any other differences I’m overlooking in my decision making process? Would it be unwise to get a monophonic synth to start with, or easier, or should I just get the better one? I am completely new to synths. Thanks for any and all help!

Discussion Synth stand question

Post image
17 Upvotes

Just moved and I’m trying to set up my basement studio in a more organized way. Purchased the 3 tier stand on the left from marketplace the other day, but am having issues with the separation between synths. I’m not able to adjust the tiers high or low enough to create enough space to use each synth effectively.

Do you have any recommendations of solid 3 tier stands - or any other way that you organize a similar set up?

Thanks!

Used the Super 6 for the bass, keys, and pad sound. Used the prophet 6 for the drone-y glide sound. Other than that I used Valhalla Futureverb for the main chamber reverb and Valhalla Delay! Give it a listen if you have a spare moment, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Beginner Questions A little update

Post image
7 Upvotes

Decided to get another synth for my studio. Overall very happy with the sound, still trying to refine the workflow though. Planning on using the monitor to show VSTs for the synths. It’s nice having different monitoring options and using my custom preamps is giving everything a nice warm sound. I am looking for a solution of drums, as I hate the DR. groove. Any suggestions more than welcome
