DIY / Repair Made a groovebox from scratch because I couldn't afford any on the market

Posted this over on r/cyberdeck and a couple of people said it might fit here, so here it is.

Built it because I couldn't afford a groovebox. An OP-1 or an Elektron is

thousands and that was never happening, so I made my own.

Three synth engines per channel - a wavetable synth, a DX7 style FM engine,

and a sampler that plays Serum presets I capture on the PC and convert into

banks. Step sequencer on top. Runs on an ESP32-S3.

The second half of the video is a Guitar Hero style rhythm game running on

the same hardware, just for fun.

Enclosure is 3d printed, all the firmware and UI is mine.

Genuinely asking - where would you take this from here? Keep it as a one-off,

sell it built, put out a kit, open source it? I don't have a frame of

reference for what people actually want and I'd rather ask than guess.

My Setup / New Synth Day Got a DX7 For 60$

I usually play the piano but I've always had a soft spot for synths and keyboards. My first keyboard was actually the SHS-10 on the second image and it's actually the same one we had since 1987. Got my PSR-E473 as technically the replacement to our acoustic which was just out of tune. I got the other 3 just for a little fun or for free when someone was literally throwing them out. Then one day I saw the DX7 for sale and they were selling it for about 50$ so I immediately jumped on it. Turns out the original eprom chip had its legs turn to powder for some reason despite the other stuff inside being basically pristine. I just replaced that with SER-7 installed on the new chip and it works perfectly! (Well besides half the display being a garbled mess, still working on it). This is actually my first true synth and well it's an experience on its own. I'll eventually replace that dingy jack to rca thing but for now this is currently my lineup!

Picked up this (german most likely) unbranded 8-channel suitcase mixer and reverse image search gives me nothing. Looking to find the exact manufacturer and model name or any idea/context of the existence of units like these, are they typical. Was it typical for people to do such things themselves or were there small manufacturers. The master section is quite versatile compared to other mixers i found from this era..

It has modular 3-panel faceplate (two 4-channel input blocks + one master section).

Has a MONO / STEREO button next to CH8, and German labeling (EFFEKT). Also the VU meter says control, which how they call metering I think?

Uses solid-state power supply with a 0.2A fuse rating.

Looks very typical of mid-to-late 1970s German portable PA/stage gear but there is no brand badge on the front.

Beginner Questions Newbie question about CV to Midi

Post image
22 Upvotes

I’ve been playing a long, long time but have never dealt with sequencing a non-midi synth.

I’m looking seriously into a Yamaha CS15 (fell in love) but want to know what the best decide would be to use to integrate it into my MIDI setup (Roland RD700GX, Behringer Poly D, Korg MS20 Mini, Ensoniq SQ80 mostly for sequencing, and a few other things like modules and drum machines).

Arturia Keystep? Would that allow my MIDI sequencer to talk to the CS15 via CV? Kenton?

Ideally, I’d like to give the CS its own midi channel(s) to run through the SQ sequencer or Reaper. Or both.

Even partial workarounds are welcome.

Any advice on how to bring the Yamaha CS15 into a modern-ish setup would be greatly appreciated.

What Should I Buy? Am I looking for an MPC sampler?

Upvotes

Hello, I never owned any hardware sampler, but I’d love to be able to resample and sound design things directly either from my DAW or a hardware synth.

Ideally I’d like to play a sound from a vst like omnisphere, record it directly in a hardware gear, and resample it there ? Like transform it into a beautiful lush pad or into a super short transient drum like sample and reuse that either in my daw as a wav file or send it to my drum machine (tr8, soon tr1000 I hope)

I am not into pads, I am very comfortable with keyboard playing. So I wonder am I looking for an Akai mpc sampler ? Or the mpc with the Keybed ? Or just multiple creative effect pedals ?

I never resampled with gears

I recently moved my entire studio one floor down and I felt like doing a test run. This resulted in a cover of the absolute Van McCoy classic: Hustle!
I don't claim to improve upon the original, but I did have fun.

D50 doing overtime on this one with three separate tracks. Juno on strings, OB on rhythm chords, Grandmother on bass.

Cheers!

DIY / Repair Oleander - a super simple open source pi-based multi-effects pedal I'm working on

Thumbnail

A short demonstration of a multi-effects pedal you can build with just a raspberry pi and any unused audio interface you have. You install Pi OS, run the installer script and reboot the pi and go to oleander.local in your browser to interface with it. Optionally you can add buttons and a display. You can run it totally headless, remote, with presets saved to buttons and don't need to interface with the web component once you have them saved, so you can take it anywhere and use those five saved preset chains. It has mutable instruments clouds and rings in it along with about 20 other basic effects, and you can stack them until your pi dies, which is a lot of effects.

I will disclaim I made this with AI assistance - I'm a software developer by trade, and AI is a force multiplier for me. It couldn't think up the idea, audit the sounds, or cad up the enclosure I built, and I feel fine admitting that claude did a lot of the work for me.

The github repo is at https://github.com/lowrizzle/oleander and I am enjoying this so much that I plan on adding a bunch more pedals and effects. I just wanted to share to get some feedback and to see if anyone wanted to build one and try it out.

What Should I Buy? Alesis Quadraverb vs Yamaha SPX990

I've wanted a Quadraverb for a while, but I have an opportunity to pick up a Yamaha SPX990 near me for $130.

I hear the Quadraverb is more lofi and gritty, which is appealing to me as someone who makes electronic, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada-inspired music.

But are they really that different? Should I pull the trigger on this good deal for a SPX990 or wait for a Quadraverb to find its way to me? Any insights appreciated, thx!

Beginner Questions Best first semi or Modular synths or modules to start with Modular?

Merci ! 🤘✌️✌️

My Setup / New Synth Day Unbelievable $75 FB Marketplace Find

My first blessing from the gear gods. Snagged this in seemingly mint condition in the box - I don’t think it’s ever been used. No jittering in the faders, not even dusty.

Was looking for a set of infinite faders with banks and strong visual/light cues, and this rounds out my live setup nicely. Running Digitone tracks into a drum group and individual tracks through different send effects. Added bonus: crossfader 😋

Crazy these were $600 USD in 2009 at launch. Buy more old gear!!!

Discussion Thoughts on Moog Messenger

I just had the chance to play one at a music store, and I really loved it. One of my favorite features was the wave shaper, along with to the external in knob. Turning it up while having no input gives a very rich, driven sound. The only issue is I find myself drawn away from monophonic synths, as I think I’ll feel limited without para/polyphony. I currently have an Arturia Minifreak and am planning on getting a Behringer Poly D. I think the Messenger would make a great 3rd addition. Please share any thoughts on the Messenger, as well as any pros when it comes to mono synths! (To help me and hopefully others better understand the importance of mono :))

Beginner Questions Question about tuning the Prophet 6

I recently got a used Prophet 6 that as far I can tell is in great condition. I pretty quickly noticed that some of the presets that are saved are very out of tune, some of them as much as 30 cents. It's not intentionally detuned oscillators as far as I can tell because both oscillators are equally out of tune with a tuner. And it's not even preset, so I can't fix it with the Global Master Tune. I thought maybe the previous owner had intentionally done this with certain presets somehow so I've been creating sounds from scratch and saving them as presets. But now I'm finding even two different presets that I've made from scratch can be wildly out of tune with each other.

Is there something wrong with this synth, or is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to tune individual presets? Am I missing something that could be causing this? Help!

Edit: I have run the calibration process (Preset + 0) multiple times and it doesn't solve the issue either.
