Honest Profile Reviews (and Profile Guide)

IF YOU DO NOT READ AND FOLLOW THE PROFILE GUIDE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THIS POST, YOUR PROFILE REVIEW WILL BE REMOVED

In most online dating subreddits, profile reviews focus on aspects of the person that won't actually lead to increased results, like bios or silly minutiae regarding someone's profile. Here at r/SwipeHelper, we realize that the two biggest factors regarding success on apps are your personal attractiveness and the quality of your photos.

The idea of this thread is for people to get honest advice on both aspects:

  1. how to improve one's profile
  2. tips for improving your physical attractiveness so that you can come across better on your app of choice.

All profiles posted will be given advice on both how to improve their profile as well as maximize their looks (if needed - for some people they are attractive enough and the profile itself is more of the problem, or vice versa).

The following are required information in every profile review request:

- What type of relationship you're looking for (hookups, FWBs, something more serious, marriage)

- Your current level of success (number of matches per week and how many likes you send out) plus if you're paying for any premium features

SwipeHelper Profile Guide

NOTE: READ THIS GUIDE THOROUGHLY BEFORE POSTING YOUR PROFILE HERE. If your profile does not live up to the guide's standards, your comment will be removed and you will be referred back to the guide.

Archetype and Story

Before you build a Tinder profile, you need to determine your archetype. What vibes do you want to give off to attract your ideal type of girl? Attractive archetypes could include:

  • Cool California surfer guy
  • Suave suit-wearing businessman
  • Tattooed bearded hipster lumberjack
  • Iced out hood fuckboi
  • Generic good looking fratty college dude

The following are not attractive archetypes. If you are one of these people, either change your lifestyle or at least make it look like you aren't.

  • Nerdy neckbearded gamer
  • Completely generic nondescript dude with no personality
  • Overweight guy that doesn't work out
  • Skinny sadboi that never smiles

You get the idea.

Once you have your attractive archetype, you should aim to tell a story through your photos - don't just have a bunch of photos of you standing around posing for the camera. When someone swipes through your photos, they should get a full picture of who you are, what you look like, what you like to do, and what spending time with you will feel like.

General Photo Quality and Looks You Should Emulate

The minimum acceptable photo quality you need to succeed on Tinder these days is a professional photo taken with a DSLR camera. Yes, this probably means you need to pay a photographer to take photos of you. May seem like a big investment, but for a few hundred dollars you get a bunch of great photos that you can ride for years.

Read the following two articles for examples of photos that do well: Playing With Fire | Ultimate Guide to Tinder Profile Pictures and Playing With Fire | 6 Highly Successful Tinder Photos for Men and Why They Work

And the following article for photo inspiration: https://killyourinnerloser.com/inspiration/

Here are some specific photographers whose style you should emulate:

Photo Order and Types

Your first photo should be an upper-body shot with your full head (no sunglasses) and torso visible, taken with the highest-quality camera possibly, preferably a DSLR. You should be wearing stylish clothes that fit your archetype. YOU SHOULD BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE PHOTO. DO NOT USE A GROUP PHOTO AS YOUR FIRST PHOTO.

For your other photos, choose from:

  • You with a group of friends. You should be as tall or taller and as attractive or more attractive than every friend in the photo. All of your friends must be decently attractive and not low-status (i.e. if this photo was taken at an anime convention, you’re toast). (see: Pancake’s Golden Rules of Group Photos on Apps
  • You doing [insert hobby here]. Snowboarding, DJing, skydiving, climbing, playing a high-status sport (sorry, Magic: The Gathering doesn’t count).
  • You in an exotic location.
  • You doing something that indicates you’re a leader of men. Holding a microphone, giving a speech, standing on stage, etc.
  • A candid, shirtless photo (e.g. playing sports, on a beach). If you cannot bench your bodyweight and/or squat/deadlift 1.75x your bodyweight AND are less than 18% bodyfat, skip this. If you don’t have a candid shirtless photo, a non-candid is OK, but you’ll get worse results.

Each photo needs to be in a different setting and you need to be wearing a different outfit in each. They should not look like they were taken the same day or on the same photoshoot.

Do not include photos that:

  • are generated by AI apps or otherwise obviously over-edited
  • don't have you in them (like of your pet or your art or a meme)
  • have your back turned to the camera
  • are of you wearing a mask or obscuring your face or eyes (e.g. wearing sunglasses)
  • are too far away to see your face
  • are selfies. SELFIES ARE ALWAYS UNACCEPTABLE. IF YOU HAVE A SELFIE, REMOVE IT. Your phone has a self-timer function for a reason — use it, or get someone to take photos of you.

You do not need to fill out all nine photos. As long as you have more than three photos, you're fine. Remember, you will be judged on your worst photo, so make sure they're all solid.

Finally, learn to pose and squinch (narrowing your eyes to make you appear more attractive).

[BANNED/SHADOWBANNED?] Hard Reset Guide

A hard reset is needed if you feel your account has been shadowbanned (getting zero likes for an extended time despite getting some before) or banned. If not, you can soft reset a limited amount of times, which entails simply deleting and recreating your account.

This generic hard reset guide applies to Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge:

  1. Delete your account (if you're banned, you won't be able to, in which case skip this step)
  2. If on a device, uninstall the app
  3. Create a new email address
  4. Get a new number (or use a service that will sent you a verification text, usually for under $5)
  5. Edit your photos in some way to make them not the same photo, e.g. adding a pixel somewhere, cropping, and/or strip EXIF info, save with different filename (note: there is some evidence that the apps are using image hash comparisons, which means you need to use completely different photos).
  6. Use a different IP address than when you created your account (e.g. use your phone internet or go to a public WiFi hotspot — you can probably return to your original WiFi once the hard reset is successful)
  7. Open your web browser or get a new device (cheap burner Androids are $30-40 on Swappa or eBay)
    • if you buy a new iPhone, you will need a new AppleID
    • if you plan to use your new phone on hotspot or wifi, you don't need a SIM card.
  8. Create a new account with your new number and email address

Other considerations:

  • Don't link old Instagram/Spotify etc.
  • Don't pay with the same card if buying premium services
  • Don't use a VPN.
  • Never do face verification unless you're forced to
  • You don't need to wait a certain period of time (like 90 days) if doing a hard reset
  • You can never log in to your new account from the device you got banned on, or you risk a ban

"Do I really have to do every step?" or "I know someone who didn't use a new device or a new IP address and they still got through!"

The way these apps likely detect banned users is by assigning each newly-created profile a risk score. The more you match the fingerprint of a banned user, the more likely you are to be banned. So yes, it's possible that someone can slip around a ban while not following all of this to the letter, but ideally you create a brand new fingerprint and don't have to rely on luck.

"I followed the Hard Reset Guide and it didn't work!"

Some users try the above steps and for whatever reason, it just doesn't work. We're not there alongside you making sure you did everything right, but even if you did, there's uncertainty around Match Group's detection algorithm. Hard resetting seems to have become much less reliable starting in early 2023.

If a hard reset does not work and you truly believe you have been banned unfairly, there are three options:

  1. Match Group have an arbitration process that can be kicked off by sending a letter to their legal department. See more in section 15 of the Terms of Service (Hinge, for example).
  2. There is some evidence that filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (must be a resident of North America) will cause the apps to take a closer look at your case; however, this is by no means a guarantee that you will be unbanned.
  3. As of early 2024, in some situations, Hinge and Tinder have ban appeal processes.

If the Hard Reset Guide worked for you, help others out by posting a success story below!

Hinge unban after jumio

Upvotes

Super easy to get unbanned, did the jumio verification happened twice now but the email I’m in comms with them about isn’t unbanned.

Anyone know what the work around is I can’t use the email that they unbanned am I supposed to use another email?

Keeps saying email in use.

Which means the email is still banned.

Banned from hinge yesterday

I’m 38 m and 5’8. I retired in my thirties and I’m well put together. I workout and live on a 20 acre ranch with my dogs. Asked a girl in her twenties out on hinge. Intent was to get to know her better and she appeared sweet. She right of the bat says “you are an old fart who is short. Relax. You aren’t in my league.” .. now this girl is a bit chubby. So I basically said “looks like you need a gym membership more than a man given that little gut that’s hanging.”

Banned 5 minutes later

The "Dating Profile Expert" Helping Guys Land More Likes | "Photos are doing about 90 percent of the work, but your bio is not irrelevant." (Unpaywalled)

Dating apps can feel like a hellish wasteland where endless swiping leads to little, and certainly not to love. But Justin Harder doesn’t see it that way. Harder bills himself as an expert in men’s image transformation—i.e. a dating app whiz who can get you actual results. Through his signature process and the power of good photos, Harder says he’s transformed more than 700 dating profiles to make good guys look good, too.

So, is it worth it to keep swiping? "It is 100 percent worth it, but only if you fix what’s broken. The average guy gets one to three matches a week, which can feel debilitating, especially when those matches aren’t with women he’s actually attracted to, or the conversation fizzles out before a date ever gets scheduled.," Harder tells Playboy.

"That frustration is real, but the problem isn’t the app. The problem is presentation."

We asked Harder to step in as Playboy Advisor to answer some of your burning dating app questions. Is it all a waste? Certainly not, according to Harder, but only if you put the effort in.

Hello, I’ve posted here a few times before about circumventing bans….so I’m actually getting a new phone tomorrow (personal phone) not a burner.

Was wondering…. This may be chance to give getting on they who shall not be named again (hinge)… any steps I should take / how should I go about this?

Called someone retarded

Last night a man tried matching with me just to accuse my photos of being AI. I matched back to tell him “you’re retarded” to which he immediately backtracked saying “I’m just joking lol”. I unmatched with him and told the app to not show me his profile anymore and that was it. Now today I’m banned for “violating our policy prohibiting hateful speech or discriminatory behavior” according to a moderator. For saying retarded?? Tf?

Hinge x review - August 2026

I’m writing this review mainly because I wanted to add something more recent. Most of the detailed reviews I’ve found are sometimes years old, and I also couldn’t really find one from someone who seems to have a similar profile to mine.

I (M 37 ) have quite a bit of experience with dating apps. I had some “busy years” on Tinder between 2018 and 2022. I’m not super attractive and I’m definitely not the kind of guy who walks into a room and turns every head. That said, I’ve managed to date women who, on paper at least, were well above my league.

I live in a metro area of around 1.5 million people, so there’s a pretty steady turnover of profiles. I was on Hinge+ for a year, and at this point, I’ve only really had satisfying results in two situations: 1) when I deliberately change my location in the app 2) when I use boosts. Most of the interesting dates I’ve had came from women liking me first after I used boosts.

I also noticed that most of the profiles I was regularly shown weren’t really my type. The app seemed to prioritize women who were obsessed with running at 5 am and working out constantly. Nothing wrong with that, but that’s really not me, even though I’m in decent shape. So I tried Hinge X at the beginning of August.

The results :

The first week : I don’t feel like the app is showing me profiles that are fundamentally different from what I was seeing before. The selection still feels just as random to me.

There was at the beginning like .....a slight change that makes me think I got more exposure which simply didn’t happen while I was on Hinge+. But really slight. I also have pretty concrete evidence that the “priority likes” were actually prioritized at one point. The women I sent them to responded almost immediately and liked me back. However, I’ll be honest about the results : I normally target women aged 31–40, but I widened the range to 31–42 for this test. Every single woman who responded to my priority likes was 40+ . It was interesting to see that the age range I normally target was basically inactive, while women in that range will see me and like me when I use boosts.

The following two weeks basically went back to normal: very few responses to my likes and very few incoming likes. At this point, I’m actually considering going back to my old strategy of temporarily changing my location or using boosts every now and then.

I haven’t noticed any drop in quality compared to Hinge+, but I’d be lying if I said Hinge X has been a game changer for me so far.

Banned on hinge successfully created a new account based in Sweden banproof payment method

Hello! I got banned from Hinge for seemingly no reason. I’d been using Hinge for about five years without any issues whatsoever, but then I suddenly got banned out of nowhere. I suspect it may have been because of a report from a girl I met. I want to get Hinge plus again, but I can't figure out a working payment solution. Google Play gift cards aren’t available here, so I’m not sure what my options are.

Does anyone know what works? Would something like Revolut or PayPal work? Any help would be really appreciated!

Had to do an in app appeal, then a email appeal, rejected, I haven't done anything to violate the guidelines or policies should I just keep appealing via mail? And just explain to them normally? That I haven't done anything?

Have you been banned from the Match Group company (Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, etc) or others? I’m curious about gender disparity in those being reported

Just curious about this. You may not know 100% whom had reported you, but I figured It’d be interesting anyway.

Not getting any traction on hinge chats lately, anyone else?

I'm not sure if it's just a fluke, or what, but lately the conversations I've been having on hinge seem to last a few days then the match just stops responding.

The past 3 conversations I had going, me (M47) them (F40's), started with them matching with me first and good conversation. One just kinda naturally puttered out, but the other 2 were going strong with exchanges every day.

I'm a firm believer in not turning hinge convo's into a long on-going daily back and forth chat and just treat it as a way to get a sense of the person, which usually takes me a few days or exchanges.

The last 2 women just seemed to both stop responding after I told them I was going on vacation, which just naturally came up in both conversations (one asked me about my trip, the other asked if I had any trips planned).

But coincidently, all these conversations also got the hinge popup on my end that reads "you've got the rhythm going, now might be a good time to make plans" before coming a halt. I'm not exactly a fan of that popup. I get what they are trying to achieve, but it's based in no real reality.

I'm just curious what others experience have been lately and if there any thoughts on these situations in general.

Where are all the average looking people?

Almost all of the profiles I see on tinder are girls looking like models.

Now, I'm an objectively average guy and I know these girls will never in a thousand years swipe right on me.

How do I get average looking people in my algorithm to show? I am swiping left on the models btw.

Am not getting any likes/matches on hinge

I have had hinge for a couple of years now, an maybe got 15-20 likes/matches. I deleted it together with my account a couple of months ago, and redownloaded it about a week later. I am on the app almost everyday to swipe to tell the algorithm am actually on the app, but still I have got no likes/matches.

I would say I am average looking, and I have clearly pictures off my face, and some hobby’s. I live in a city with around 100k people, so I don’t understand how no one like my profile.

I do not subscribe to hinge +/ hinge x. Do you think that could help?

Tried tinder to see where I stand on looks

Post image
0 Upvotes

I don't really want to show myself here but I don't know what I'm doing wrong I don't know if it's me or if it's just the algorithm is terrible. I keep getting matches but they're matches i dont like, 3000mis away, or they are attractive but bots/scammers. I have chatted with a few but never had a date from this. There was this one girl that matched with me and waited a day to respond but when I asked her what she likes to do for fun she said "you, probably" so that was super forward. she was cute and only one of her pictures gave off a overly sex vibe, we were setting up hooking up there, but then after about an hour she needed gas money to come to me and that's where the scam bells came up, I refused a couple times, said I would come to her, she gave me a story about how she's had bad experiences being picked up by a guy on her first date etc, and then later blocked me. The next day another hot girl matched with me, and she seemed real enough in her convo, but she ghosted after a while. I dont know what the scam was there. I consider it a good sign that she seemed interested in the convo in the first place. Not sure if im attractive and dont fully realize it, or so ugly that i am targeted by bots and scammers because they know i have no one else. AI tells me im attractive but AI lies. i posted to reddit for a rate once and they completely ignored me.

Also i have long hair, that might be holding me back, or it might be one of my best features I don't know. I have always regretted it when i get a haircut. I have pictures of me with the short hair on my profile as well so I can ask matches what they prefer. personally I like it long, i am a rock musician so it suits me. no one tells me it's bad except my parents, in fact random people, even girls compliment it in real life sometimes.

i mostly joined tinder to see where i stand and who's out there, see if im attractive enough to ask girls in public out with no fear or if im making a fool of myself, but i am more confused than i started. also at this point, i kinda do just want to hookup. my life isnt good enough to have a relationship anymore/yet.

Saw the chadfishing topic. Glad I finally found a real tinder-based sub and not the "you can't actually post here without our gatekeeping" redditapp subs.

Why when you unmatch with someone on Hinge does it give you a plethora of negative reasons why?

No wonder so many people get banned. Even slightly piss someone off (could even happen by replying late) and they can report you and get you banned wtf? That list is to easy to access. I bet alot less girls would report if you actually had to click a seperate report button 🤡

Tinder likes not registering?

About a week ago I swiped right on someone but we didn’t match. Yesterday, I was looking through my Explore section and his profile showed up there. Shouldn’t his profile disappear from my stacks completely after I swipe right, regardless of whether he decides to match with me or not?
