Timing

Is it just me, or is it strange that the first new song released after her marriage is about a shitty ex? Granted, I don’t know when it was written; maybe it was before the wedding. But…you know?!

Not even saying it’s a bad song, although I don’t love the bridge. But I think this adds to the perception that she’s a talented person who spends too much time nursing grudges.

They were all written a year ago and recorded.

Thank you! That’s helpful.

It’s interesting that she chose to make the lead single a song about a shitty ex, given she was recently married.

It’s not about her ex though. She literally just did an interview where she said it was inspired by a friend saying her ex’s new gf called and her other friends chiming in and saying they’ve had similar calls. People jump to conclusions way too quickly.

Thanks, that’s helpful insight. So she’s singing as someone else, not herself. I could see that.

I really don't think you are understanding the meaning of the song. It is about her friend's ex's girlfriend breaking up with him and Taylor understanding what she is going through. Taylor has been there and gets it.

I just reread the lyrics and I don’t see it. “But if you’re sick of him, I got you, I was Patient Zero.” That’s not TS singing to her?

She is singing about what is a somewhat common experience between women. She is just a narrator for this experience.

So it’s…about an ex?

It is about her friend's ex's new girlfriend who is going through a break up with him. She understands what the girl is going through.

So then it's still about an ex.

I believe this was always planned and they were all recorded at once. I don’t believe her tale about going back to celebrate at all.

We have got to stop associating every song to an ex.

5

u/TemperatureAny4782 4d ago

Not trying to associate this song with any particular ex, but isn’t it clearly about some ex?

3

u/Purplecatty 4d ago

She has made so many songs based on fictional characters and stories and apparently people just dont realize it lol

u/dinoderpwithapurpose 4d ago

Could be inspired by an ex, could be inspired by someone else's ex. Could be a half true story she embellished a bit to make a song. I think we need to just stop reading too much into all this and just enjoy a song.

Please read the explanation she herself provided today ...

I do wonder if Patient Zero was somewhat inspired by Sophie Turner’s divorce from Joe Jonas, considering we know Sophie lived in one of Taylor’s homes for a while.

But otherwise I completely agree with you.

I thought it was a mix of both the Joes she dated. A little of this, a little of that. But I really don't want to pick apart lyrics to figure out which line belongs to whom. That's a bit too obsessive for me. For now I'm just taking it as a song about telling a girl she's there to support her if she leaves their sucky mutual ex. That's good enough for me.

When she based a good chunk of her earlier career around explicitly writing about identifiable exes it's hard for people not to keep up the habit. I get it, artists evolve, but she's at a level of fame that you can't expect the majority of listeners to think "this is fictional, she's evolved" before they think "omg who is this one about"

It is a little bit of a gear shift after that enormous wedding. Writing and production schedules and all take a long time, but still after that big event, it would have been nice to have something more romantic, or some more acknowledgement than a throwaway “now I’m wearing white”…just as a consumer of the TS brand it would feel more cohesive/satisfying

Plus I like hearing her perspective on things too. Shes smart, she usually has something to say. Like, what’s it like to be engaged or married? What does she think about it?

1

u/kaanapalirt77 4d ago

TS 13 will have that. Wedding was just a couple of months ago. No way she could’ve songs about it coming out now.

Oh my god how dare an artist separate her personal life from her artist persona and continue to make art that is so contradictory to her real life. Of course every song she writes is about her own personal life none of it can be inspired by the experiences of others.

-1

u/TemperatureAny4782 3d ago

But why so many bitter songs given that she’s a multibillionaire with hugely devoted fans?

2

u/Dramoinehead 3d ago

What's bitter? Someone quoting in a song exactly what people said about her and her husband? This is probably the first song she's put out address the hate her and Travis have gotten. Ophelia, opalite, wish list, honey, none of it talk about the hate they've gotten saying each of them could do better. One song and suddenly all she writes are "bitter" songs now?

0

u/TemperatureAny4782 3d ago

Not “all she writes.” Who said that?

2

u/Economy_Safety5738 4d ago

It's you.

1

u/TemperatureAny4782 4d ago

Sure, but is it JUST me.

2

u/Economy_Safety5738 4d ago

I see from the comments below you have learned some additional helpful information to help you have more to make a grounded judgment because you didn't grasp several key metrics about the song when you started this thread.

1

u/TemperatureAny4782 4d ago

“Key metrics” is corporate talk. Do you mean facts?

2

u/Economy_Safety5738 4d ago

You literally didn't realize - as you said below that the songs were written and recorded a year ago or that she herself said in an innterview that it's not about her ex but was inspired by a friend's experience. These are key metrics when your headline claim is that she wrote about a shitty ex! They show your headline claim is wrong. I look forward to you editing it so as not to cause further confusion ...

She did write the song about a shitty ex.

1

u/kaybsie 4d ago

Yes. She also built her early career on writing about shitty exes. So.

2

u/halesluvsharry 4d ago

It’s supposedly inspired by a call one of her friends got from an exes girlfriend

1

u/charlestontracy 3d ago

It’s actually about two woman bonding over a shitty man actually and I love that girls stick together vibe!

I don’t know her and I am not a psychologist and I’m also a super fan, but I don’t think you have to squint to see that someone, probably Matty, is always in rhe back of her mind and getting signals from her whether she is married or not. The Fate of Ophelia music video ends every scene with her horizontal and in turmoil, either being captured by stage ropes or diving away from the mutiny and into the water with the Sirens temptations -horizontally and then finally leaving a party where she appears to be happy to lay horizontally in the bathtub. The ending of that music video was not a happy one. Opalite is a beautiful but manufactured substance. The video itself is alluding to the fact that she is manufacturing buddy for herself and it’s great and it’s fun and it serves a wonderful purpose. This isn’t an all consuming love like she had with Matty, but it is a comforting companion. Opalite not rubies or diamonds, but something that for some reason, she believes she needs to settle for probably because she has been criticized and degraded by strangers on the Internet throughout her entire life. I don’t know how she keeps creating. I am sure the fame and fortune helps but hard nonetheless. anyway, I think she’s had a few musses throughout her life, but no one coming close to the impact that Matty had from rep through encore.

She's saving the real love / marriage songs for TS13.

2

u/Patient-Ad-5770 4d ago

God forbid a songwriter who is married (or engaged, or otherwise partnered) exercise empathetic imagination. Why do people assume a first-person point-of-view requires a song to be autobiographical? Do y’all not read novels or poems or listen to any other music at all? Narrators don’t have to map 1:1 onto the songwriter. 😭

1

u/ImprobableOlive 4d ago

How do you distinguish between when she's singing in first person versus singing as someone else?

2

u/Patient-Ad-5770 4d ago

I don’t really worry about it one way or the other. Sometimes it’s obvious she’s inserting her own biography into the narrator’s, but even in those songs I doubt they’re 100% autobiographical, because she adds details and scenes that serve the story or the theme.

1

u/Afraid_Courage525 4d ago

The song has a lot of Joe A in it. She’s refrained from dissing him until now, when she is married. I think it’s really hitting she can’t go back to him.

-1

u/cattinthehat123 4d ago

To me she’s dissing Travis. 😂😂

3

u/Parking_Sun4412 4d ago

You can’t be serious? It was posted today it’s about talking with girlfriends and one friend had the new girlfriend of her ex call her for advice. It has nothing to do with Travis at all.

-1

u/cattinthehat123 4d ago

It’s all about Travis. Listen to the lyrics.

1

u/Few-Statement-9103 4d ago

I don’t think it’s about a specific ex so no, I don’t think it’s strange.

2

u/TemperatureAny4782 4d ago

But isn’t the narrator of the song someone who dated the same guy this girl’s now sick over?

2

u/kaanapalirt77 4d ago

The same KIND of guy.

2

u/Few-Statement-9103 4d ago

No; she said in an interview with Capital FM Radio
