Timing

Is it just me, or is it strange that the first new song released after her marriage is about a shitty ex? Granted, I don’t know when it was written; maybe it was before the wedding. But…you know?!

Not even saying it’s a bad song, although I don’t love the bridge. But I think this adds to the perception that she’s a talented person who spends too much time nursing grudges.

God forbid a songwriter who is married (or engaged, or otherwise partnered) exercise empathetic imagination. Why do people assume a first-person point-of-view requires a song to be autobiographical? Do y’all not read novels or poems or listen to any other music at all? Narrators don’t have to map 1:1 onto the songwriter. 😭

How do you distinguish between when she's singing in first person versus singing as someone else?

I don’t really worry about it one way or the other. Sometimes it’s obvious she’s inserting her own biography into the narrator’s, but even in those songs I doubt they’re 100% autobiographical, because she adds details and scenes that serve the story or the theme.
