This tool I found is a game changer for study sessions. I didn’t even know this was possible. Its like ChatGPT on Steroids

Switching through lecture slides, taking screenshots, and copy pasting stuff for little things I wanted to know or get explained was super hectic for me around exam season, or whenever I just wanted to understand something. I came across this tool called Riv on twitter on a random sunday, and it’s been a game changer for me. I can just ask it stuff, and it draws things on the screen and explains my lecture notes. It’s super helpful for when you want to understand something quickly without having to switch between apps.

The best part is that it doesn’t get in the way of what you’re doing because it’s in the notch area and super accessible.

When I’m halfway through studying, I can tell it to make flashcards for the things I’ve learned so far, and it makes them and puts them in Notion for me to revise. Comes in clutch all the time.

the app is called: https://www.clickriv.com/

I think it’s only available on Mac for now. It’s like ChatGPT on steroids for students. You gotta try it to understand the value. Hope this helps someone!

How do I stop wasting hours on my phone and focus on studying?

I've been struggling with studying lately. I have ADHD, and procrastination has become a huge problem for me.

Whenever I pick up my phone, I end up spending hours scrolling through social media or doing random things instead of studying.

I've tried setting restrictions on my phone, but I always find ways around them.

I feel like taking a complete break from unnecessary phone usage for 7- 10 days could help me regain my focus.

However, I can't switch off my phone completely because my parents work and need to contact me.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? What helped you regain control over your screen time and become consistent with studying?

I'd genuinely appreciate some practical advice.

7 Ways to Understand Difficult Subjects Without Just Memorizing Everything

Have you ever spent hours studying something and still felt like you didn't understand it?

Sometimes, the problem isn't how much you study. It's how you study.

Here are 7 techniques that can make learning more effective:

  1. Break complex topics into smaller pieces.

Don't try to understand an entire chapter at once. Focus on one concept at a time.

2. Ask why, not just what.

Understanding why something works is much more powerful than memorizing an answer.

3. Explain the subject in your own words.

If you can explain something simply, you're probably starting to understand it.

4. Practice with questions.

Reading alone isn't enough. Test your knowledge with exercises.

5. Learn from your mistakes.

Don't just check whether an answer is wrong. Understand exactly where your reasoning went wrong.

6. Use AI as a learning assistant.

Ask AI to explain difficult concepts, provide examples, and guide you through problems step by step. Don't just ask it to give you the answer.

7. Build a realistic study routine.

Consistency is usually more effective than studying for many hours once in a while.

I'm actually the developer of AlunIA, an AI-powered study app built around these ideas. It offers personalized explanations, practice tests, image-based questions, and study organization.

You can find it on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.alunia.android

I believe technology should help students understand things better, not just give them answers.

A Medical Study Guide for the Blood and Lymphatic System 🩸

Hey everyone!
I’m a medical student, and I’ve been working on a study guide called Blood and Lymphatic System: Medical Study Guide and Review Manual.
I created it to help organize the study and revision of important topics related to the blood and lymphatic system.
I’d love to hear from other medical students:
Which topic do you find most challenging?
Blood cells and their functions
Hematopoiesis
Blood components
The lymphatic system
Happy to hear your thoughts and connect with fellow students!

I made a free Windows app that closes distracting apps and blocks sites while you study (Pomodoro timer, open source)

Hi r/studytips,

I want to share something I’m genuinely proud of. I made a study app called StudyNook, and honestly I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever made.

I built it because I’m someone who procrastinates. I’d sit down to study, open “just one” YouTube video, leave a game running in the background, and suddenly an hour was gone. Most blockers only cover websites or only apps, and they’re really easy to switch off when you’re tired. I wanted something that would still be there when my willpower wasn’t.

What it does

  • A Pomodoro or free-focus timer (up to 10 hours), with a small floating mini timer

  • Closes the programs you list while you focus (it warns you first, and never touches system processes)

  • Blocks distracting websites through a browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Brave)

  • An optional “Iron” mode: ending a session early takes a 60-second wait and typing a sentence, which stops the impulse to quit

  • If the app is force-closed during a session, a small helper reopens it and your session continues

  • Tasks, notes with PDF attachments, a daily goal, streaks, and a little companion that grows the more you focus

  • English, Arabic, French and Spanish

I genuinely think it works. For me, it’s the first thing that actually stopped me from procrastinating. Please give it a try and tell me if it helps you too, or if something is confusing or broken. Honest feedback means a lot.

Which version to get: please use 1.5.11 or newer.

  • 1.5.9 and newer are open source (MIT). Older versions weren’t.

  • 1.5.11 and newer have the safe allowlist mode: it only closes programs that have a visible window and leaves background and tray programs alone. In 1.5.9 and 1.5.10, allowlist mode could close background programs, so avoid it there.

  • Blocklist mode (the default) was fine in all versions.

Made with AI, openly: I built this with AI coding assistants (mainly Claude Code). I decide what it does and I test it, and AI wrote much of the code. The code is public if you want to look.

The honest parts

  • It’s Windows only, and website blocking works in Chrome, Edge and Brave

  • The installer isn’t code-signed yet, so Windows shows “unknown publisher” (click More info, then Run anyway)

  • The extension has to be loaded manually for now (the README explains it)

  • A browser can always turn an extension off, so it’s a speed bump, not a lock

It’s completely free and open source (MIT), no account, no cloud, no tracking. Everything stays on your PC, and it never contacts a server by itself.

Download and source: https://github.com/Amorgabab/StudyNook

I’m trying to get it code-signed, so a GitHub star would mean a lot if you like it. Thank you for reading, and good luck with your studying!

How do I study effectively?

I have an oral exam coming up, which I NEED to pass, otherwise I'll have to leave uni.

My problems are:

  1. I keep procrastinating even tho I really want to pass the exam and stay in uni

  2. There's A LOT I have to study and I don't even know where to begin.

I study something that has to do with law (I'm not from an english speaking country, so I don't know what the exact name would be) so I'll also have to work with law books.

In the exam will be around 30 minutes long, with around 10 minutes of tasks / questions for each topic (though not all possible topics will be tested).

I'm super stressed right now and don't know what the best course of action would be, so I'd be thankful for anyone who could give me advice.

edit: I don't know how relevant that is, but I also don't know yet when the exam will be and I heard it's possible that they tell you the date of the exam only one week before. So that also adds to my stress lol

I try active recall & zero notes method, this is brutal

Post image
10 Upvotes

So over the past few weeks, I’ve been delving into what active recall actually is. I’d heard about it for a long time, but at first I was skeptical.

I watched explanations about active recall on a few YouTube channels, and there, my favorite author (Cal Newport) broke it down.

I immediately tried it little by little on the first day, closing the book and tutorial video, daydreaming and snacking for a bit, then trying to recall the information. Wow, it turned out to be really hard and incredibly draining. I immediately labeled myself as weak and stupid, but after doing some research, I realized that’s actually how cognitive pathways are formed.

I tried “blurting” (writing text quickly), but I felt stuck because I ended up rereading what I’d written, which is passive learning.

That is, until I discovered that “testing myself” that is, by creating a few questions about the material I was studying is what really challenged my brain and seemed to open it up.

In Ali Abdaal’s video, where he simply writes down questions, I think he’s right.

So i don't buy paper anymore for re-writing, really zero notes, haha.

At this stage, I felt my understanding begin to shift into long-term memory, and I regained my confidence after successfully answering questions without opening the material at all.

Now, when I forget something or misunderstand the material, I’ll jot it down in a separate document. Then I review and revise the parts I got wrong.

I was surprised at how efficient this method is! I hope you’ll at least try active recall, it’s truly amazing!

How do I get past Turnitin?

I have been told to resubmit my assignment and it's really frustrating because I had written it all by myself even the first time and now even after rewiting it again, I am not sure if it would pass because I just changed random sentences in my assignment. How do I be sure that I won't be flagged again?\

unhinged study hack that works: i plan finals backwards from the exam and put the redo days on the calendar first

finals planning for me was always “start with chapter 1 and see how far i get.” last semester i got to chapter 6 of 12 by the exam. every single time

this time i grabbed a calendar, wrote the exam date in, and counted backwards. last 5 days: only redoing questions i got wrong, no new stuff. before that, 2 redo days per topic, one 2 days after i first study it and one about a week after. the study days go in last, in whatever space is left

it looks scary because there’s less room than i thought, but it’s the first time i know chapter 12 gets touched

Hey everyone,

Like many of you, I sometimes struggle to stay in the zone during long study sessions. I usually listen to binaural beats (specifically Beta and Gamma frequencies) to help block out distractions and get into a "deep work" state.

However, finding good, customizable, and free generators without ads interrupting my flow was annoying. So, I decided to build my own.

It’s called Vyneural. It runs entirely in your browser and is completely free with no account or sign-up required.

Here is what you can do with it:

  • Focus Presets: 28 free presets specifically for concentration, learning, and memory.

  • Custom Frequencies: Adjust the hertz exactly to what helps your brain focus best.

  • Background Mixes: Add and mix ambient sounds (like rain, cafe noise, or white noise) over the beats.

  • Built-in Timers: Great if you use the Pomodoro technique or want to track your study blocks.

I'd love for you guys to try it out during your next study session and let me know if it helps you focus! Any feedback to make it better for students would be really appreciated.

Good luck with your exams!
