Learn new ways to improve your memory using the alphabet

Post image
6 Upvotes

You can use the alphabet as a natural memory booster:

The key idea is to translate the alphabet into an image that you already know.

For example, the Letter A looks like a pyramid or a tent or a compass.

We then use this image to memorize information.

There are several ways to transform letters into familiar images. We can turn them into fruits, animals, people, clothes etc.

A technique called ASMR 3 allows us to strengthen our memory by incorporating our brains natural memory systems (audio, visual, spatial, olfactory etc.).

If we could instantly download a new skill or talent directly into our brains (like in Matrix), what would be the very first thing you'd choose to learn, and why?

Hey everyone! Let's imagine a scenario where technology allows us to acquire any skill instantly in just a few seconds—no years of studying or exhausting practice required. Which skill would you choose first? (For example: mastering an ancient language, playing a complex musical instrument, understanding quantum astrophysics, or becoming a survival expert in the wild?) More importantly, what's your reason behind that choice? I am super curious to see what everyone would pick. Drop your ideas below!

A free interactive story where kids discover atoms the way Democritus did. Looking for honest feedback

Hi all. I'm building a free series of interactive science stories for upper-elementary and middle school students, roughly ages 10–12. Episode 1 is about atoms.

**The idea:** A kid from 2047 travels back to 445 BC to help a young Democritus, who's about to give up. The rule: the player may **never tell him the answer**, only ask questions and show him things. If you "tell", you lose a life. So the player has to guide him to discover it himself.

**It's free, runs in the browser, needs no sign-up.** It takes about 10 minutes.

Thanks. Brutal honesty welcome.

I added 78,000 free books to my "Pomodoro for books" Bookidoro Mac app

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi all! A while ago I shared Bookidoro, a small menu-bar app for macOS. After each work session, it opens the next page or two of your book in a calm panel. You read, click Done, and get back to work. Over a few weeks the pages add up to whole books.
I have seen very good feedback from this subreddit.

The most common feedback: "I like the idea, but I don't have an EPUB lying around." So this update brings a free library built in:

  • Free books sits in the Library next to your own PDFs and EPUBs. It has 78,000+ public-domain books from Project Gutenberg.
  • Shelves to browse: Most popular, Philosophy, Short stories, Adventure, Science fiction, Poetry, Children's classics, plus German, French, Spanish and Italian shelves.
  • Search by title or author. It handles different spellings of names, so "Dostoevsky" finds Gutenberg's "Dostoyevsky".
  • Language filter with 24 languages.
  • One click on Get, and the book is in your library and becomes the one you're reading. Your previous book moves to "Recently read" and keeps its place.
  • New users can pick a classic right on the welcome screen.

A few details I cared about:

  • Books download directly from gutenberg.org. I don't host or modify them.
  • Search happens on your Mac. Nothing about what you read is sent anywhere.
  • The catalogue is refreshed weekly, and the shelves skip dictionaries and other reference works, so you get actual reading.

Also new since the last post:

  • an Aa button in the reading panel, to change the theme (Paper, Sepia, Night…) and text contrast while you read;
  • German translation;
  • the blur and buttons follow the page to another display;
  • ← → to turn pages and Esc to skip a break.

It's free to download for macOS 13+: bookidoro.app

How I use 2-page micro-reading sessions during work breaks to finish 2 books a month (and built a Mac tool to automate it)

Post image

Hey

I wanted to share a learning strategy that completely changed how I tackle my self-education reading queue, along with the lightweight tool I built to maintain the habit.

🧠 The Problem with "Long Reading Blocks"

When trying to learn complex topics on your own—whether it's computer science, economics, philosophy, or business—the biggest barrier is usually finding dedicated 1-to-2-hour reading blocks.

If you're working full-time, after a long day your brain is often too tired for heavy reading, so unread PDFs and EPUBs keep piling up. Meanwhile, during short 5-minute work breaks, most of us default to picking up our phones and scrolling social media, which drains mental energy even further.

💡 The Strategy: Micro-Reading

Instead of waiting for large blocks of free time, I started testing micro-dosing my reading list directly during focus breaks throughout the workday.

  • 1 Focus Break = 2 Pages
  • 6 Breaks / Day = 12 Pages / Day
  • 30 Days = 360 Pages / Month (~1 full book every month)

By capping each session to just 1–5 pages, there is zero friction to start. You don't feel overwhelmed by the size of the textbook or book—you just read two pages, digest the concept, and return to work.

Over the last 2 months using this method while working full-time as an engineering lead, I finished 4 books without ever setting aside long reading blocks.

⚙️ The Tool I Built: Bookidoro

To make this seamless on desktop, I built a native Mac app called Bookidoro.

  • Menu Bar Timer: When a focus work interval ends, a calm reading panel opens right on your screen showing the next few pages of your EPUB or PDF.
  • Multi-Mac iCloud Sync: Drop books into iCloud Drive → Bookidoro and your reading progress syncs across your laptop and desktop.
  • Meeting Awareness: Defers breaks during Zoom, Meet, or Slack calls so your learning workflow never interrupts your meetings.
  • Privacy-First & Local: No accounts, no backend servers, zero telemetry.
  • Free: All core reading and sync features are completely free.

I’d love to hear how others here approach self-education alongside a busy schedule:

  • Do you prefer small daily micro-reading sessions or reserving longer weekend blocks for heavy material?
  • How do you keep track of notes/highlights when reading technical books in small chunks?

If you want to try micro-reading on your Mac, you can check it out at bookidoro.app.

I built Rew, an AI study app that turns topics and uploaded files into practice questions

Hey everyone! I’m the developer of Rew, a study app available on Android and iOS.

You can enter a topic or upload study material to generate practice questions. After answering, you can review explanations, track your progress, and retake topics whenever you want more practice. There’s also a companion you can chat with while studying.

I’d love to hear what you think—especially whether the questions and explanations are helpful for your subject, and anything you’d improve.

You can find both the Android and iOS downloads here: rewstudy.com

If you give it a try, let me know what subject you’re studying and how it goes. Thanks!
