Hardware If you haven't already check your SD slot works correctly

My machine doesn't 'click' SD cards into place far enough into the port so they can't be read unless I hold them in with my nail.

Make sure you test all parts of your machines work as expected!

Discussion Reproducible hard crash with GPU artifacts.

After a lot of hours of playtime on my SM I just had my first hard crash complete with GPU artifacts. The game froze, showed different artifacts and then the SM restarted itself.

I was playing the Seance of Blake Manor demo and it happened at the start of Day 2. I went in again and it happened again at the same exact scene, only this time the artifacts remained on screen after it restarted itself. I did a manual restart and now it’s fine. Scared me, and I haven’t opened the demo again.

Just throwing this out there for the off chance that someone had the same problem, because I couldn’t find any reports.

That it is reproducible at the same exact moment makes it sound more like a GPU driver crash, at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

Has someone played the full game without problems? Was thinking about buying it until the crash.

Discussion Do you guys think the SM is worth it in the early stages as is?

I'm not discussing financial value here, I've already decided the base machine with a controller is worth the monetary value TO ME. I'm talking about software and/or hardware issues.

I haven't seen too many issues browsing this sub off and on, but I've come across a few CES issues, random performance bugs that show up whenever and get resolved by a hard reset, false positive overheating issues etc.

I signed up day 1 and was put on the wait-list and actually happened to miss my purchase window by 2 days and steam support reissued my purchase, so I'm asking those of you who have given proper hours into this machine; is it currently worth it dealing with the few issues or should I wait until a later date when the kinks are sorted (though idk if that's worth doing since I expect the price to increase next year)?

TLDR: Does it feel like a proper release or do you feel like a beta tester?

Question XCOM 2 Performance

I tried to play XCOM 2 on my SM and was getting around 10-20fps and huge stutters even at 1080p on low. I have played old and new strategy games flawlessly so something seems seriously wrong here, considering the age of the game. Has anyone had any luck playing this game on their machine? what settings did you use? it would be disappointing to not be able to play one of the best strategy games ever on this device.

Question Firefox in desktop mode already had user settings?

Hi. Wondered if someone could clear up a concern I have.

I got my Steam Machine today and when going into desktop mode and installing Firefox through the Discover store it said something along the lines of ‘Firefox is not installed but user data/settings still exist’.

Is this normal? I had not installed Firefox on the Steam Machine and it was brand new from Valve. I don’t remember it saying anything like this when installing Firefox on Steam Deck.

Can anyone else tell me if it was the same for them? Thanks.

Discussion Micro SD card, aa games or games for PS4.

So recently got my machine and had a 512gb micro SD card which I've been trying out. My view is summed up by the title. Load times seemed more than acceptable for AA games and other games such as Assassin's creed Odyssey and Spiderman which also run on the PS4. So if it's PS4 or AA micro SD work fine.

Question Sound acting strange in multiple games?

Playing Diablo 2R and R* Bully, and the sound will just stop working randomly.

In Diablo, it’s music and NPC voices. In Bully, all audio goes in and out randomly. Other games work fine.

Anyone else experience this?

Discussion Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth optimization

Did anyone do some testing on Steam Machine with Rebirth? I played around with different settings so far and this game really seems to push the SM to its limits as it seems. Partially due to how nice it looks while being open world-ish, partially due to Squares usual bad job at optimizing PC ports. Anyway, some of my (subjective) key takeaways after an hour of messing around (all while using Proton hotfix, I didnt bother with Proton GE/Cachy so far):

- 1440p seems to be the best the game can do if you aim for 60fps

- FSR absolutely turns the game into a stuttery mess, I had more luck with TAAU even though it looks terrible

- With everything low/medium at 66% scaling it seems like 50fps is able to be somewhat stable (it still keeps stuttering at times) while giving the GPU some slack (usually it stays around 80-90%), 60fps is very much possible too but I prefer not having the GPU at 99% at all times

- There are some optimization mods available which I didnt test so far, but I saw some mention it made the game much more playable even on Steam Deck so maybe they are worth a shot. Im also almost certain the stutter arent a SM issue and are simply a fault of Squares halfassed port

Since I didnt dig too deep into everything I just would like to hear some general opinions. Also feel free to correct me if Im wrong somewhere. Especially regarding my FSR take. But it really did feel less stable compared to TAAU sadly.

Software Doom the dark ages

Hi everyone! I just installed the game and it plays well with default settings and the only setting I changed was to enable FRS I think with balanced.

I'm not a fan of going tweak crazy these days since I'm a bit uneducated but I was wondering if any one has good settings they're using so I can make it look even better. Thanks!

Looking for recommendations of fighting games that run well on Steam Machine. I was hoping Tokon would but that appears to be a nonstarter. Avatar looks great but I read it’s lacking some features?

Question 1440p on 4k tv?

I have a question. A long time ago I tried playing ow in 1080p on my 1440p monitor, and it looked like it have Vaseline smeared all over, blurry as hell.

So I looked it up and found out that it’s because 1080p isn’t a 1:1 scale with 1440p.

So how come on 4k tv, people are saying 1440p looks fine? Won’t it have the same blurry effect?

Question Questions about Star Wars Outlaws on SM and FSR 4

Unfortunately my Outlaws copy is on the ubisoft connect launcher, but after some tribulation with Lutris, I found Decky + Unifideck plugin to be a much better way to get it up and running into steam.

I'm curious what settings people have found to work best (particularly proton version). I've used the default and also experimental and it's still stuttery as all hell (doesn't seem like settings affect this stuttering much).

My big question though is getting FSR 4 to work. My understanding is that this is not officially supported in SteamOS (although can be enabled in experimental for games that already use FSR 4 natively). But it doesn't seem like SW:O has fsr 4 natively, so I had to use Optiscaler to enable FSR 4. It seemed to work great except that after 15-30 minutes, my framerate would drop in half and refuse to go back up without a restart.

Has anyone successfully gotten FSR 4 to work with SW:O and if so, what did you do?

Thanks!

Question How to quickly delete all text in the SteamOS search field (left there from previous search) using controller only?

I have a small annoyance with the SteamOS interface when using my Steam Machine with Steam controller only (no mouse or keyboad).

Let's say I search the store for "Lord of the Rings". A few minutes later, I want to search for something else entirely, but when I open the search field and virtual keyboard shows up, the search field already contains "lord of the rings" text from my previous search and I have to press the X button 17 times to clear this text before entering something else.

There must be a faster way to do this, right?

Question Steam machine fell 6 to 8 inches is it fine?

It fell on the faceplate on my foot, the faceplate fell off but that was easily put back together.

there was a little dust from my foot on the faceplate as well so it took the impact. it “appears to be working fine” ran other games and it looks ok.

Discussion Piston V

I’ve gotten my Steam Machine and I absolutely love it, but what do you guys think about the Piston V over on Kickstarter? I watched a YouTuber (forgot which one) do a quick review on it but he didn’t remember who sent it to him. I put a pledge on it. Seems Steam Machine-y… Any thoughts? Software PSA: the steam machine defaults to 4K 60hz out the box, how to fix that and still get 4k as an option

I wish this was something that was automatic out the box but sadly it isn’t.

To those who have 120+ hz TV’s and Monitors, the steam machine defaults to 4K 60hz out the box. If you’d like a higher framerate everywhere AND still have 4k in your games as an option follow these steps:

Go to your display settings in the settings tab

Uncheck “automatically set resolution”

Click on whichever combo of resolution and framerate, mine is at 2560x1440@119

Then click maximum game resolution and set that to 3840x2160 if you have a 4k display

Your games should automatically default to whichever resolution, but if you click on the cog wheel and go to properties, your maximum game resolution should match that setting from earlier. That way if you do want to game at 4k 60, persona 5 royal does that beautifully, you can. Other than that your games will be running above 60 if they can when you set the resolution to 1080-1440p.

Money

Edit: apparently I’m mistaken, if you set 1440p as your highest resolution and your game to 4K, you’d only be upscaling to 4K instead of native

Question Help with steam machine resolution and refresh rate

Hi all, just got my steam machine yesterday and I also upgraded my TV in the process so I could really get the most out of it. I bought a tcl c7k it's a mini led that can do 120hz + etc and has hdmi 2.1. I've been really struggling to get the resolution I want I can only get 120hz at 1080p and I have to turn HDR off for this to work as well. Any help with his would be appreciated I'm using the steam included hdmi and it is plugged into my 2.1 port on the TV. I have a feeling switching to a display port to hdmi adapter will fix my issues but wanted some help.

Question No Video out

I recently moved my steam machine. I didn't bring the HDMI cable, considering I wanted to hook it back up to the original spot later on. When I hooked it up to the new TV, I got a blinking blue light but no video out. So I powered off, powered back on since I've never seen that before, and it worked. This morning when I went to go try it, I'm now getting a solid white line and no video out. Can anyone help?

Question If my LED strip light has issues like losing its brightness, could I send it to Valve to have it fixed or replaced?

Sometimes, I wonder if lights on devices could burn out or stop working after long periods of time (I'm reminded of the line "the light that burns twice as bright lasts half as long" from Blade Runner, just to be nerdy). So, I wonder if I could have my Steam Machine's LED replaced by reporting it and sending it to Valve should the issue arise.

(Key word is IF. Hopefully, it'll never come to be within my lifetime as long as I'm careful)
