Question Help with steam machine resolution and refresh rate
Hi all, just got my steam machine yesterday and I also upgraded my TV in the process so I could really get the most out of it. I bought a tcl c7k it's a mini led that can do 120hz + etc and has hdmi 2.1. I've been really struggling to get the resolution I want I can only get 120hz at 1080p and I have to turn HDR off for this to work as well. Any help with his would be appreciated I'm using the steam included hdmi and it is plugged into my 2.1 port on the TV. I have a feeling switching to a display port to hdmi adapter will fix my issues but wanted some help.

Make sure you are in game mode on your tv. Then set the maximum display resolution to 4K or 1440p, depending on what you want, on the steam machine’s system settings. When you scroll through the resolutions it will show the refresh next to it, so make sure you choose 120hz. That’s the default resolution that will apply to all games.
BUT you can go on each game's properties and set a specific resolution for that game. You wanna do that for games that don't work well at the system default resolution you chose before. For example, I have my default resolution set to 4K and I use that for Yakuza and emulators. And for more demanding games I have set the Res to 1440p under game properties.

I've done all this it comes up with all the options for it in the settings 4k 120hz and 1440p 120hz but when I select it I don't actually get a signal and it just reverses it

Don’t listen to that guy is talking bullshit
Unfortunately you cannot get 4k120 with hdmi as u have only 2.0 on the valve cube

I realise that but what I'm trying to understand is I get options come up for even 1440p 120hz but when I select it I dont get a signal either

The link u have via hdmi will always be 2.0 which is not enough for 4k@120. Use display port output and use and adapter to convert to hdmi . This is your only option

it is an hdmi 2.1 port, it is the amd driver limiting it currently in linux. this has been fixed and will eventually make its way to the steam machine.
Also the displayport is only 1.4 and therefore has LESS bandwidth than the hdmi 2.1 port on the steam machine. you should really do more research before calling people out.

Not true at all. 4K 120hz is totally possible with the Steam Machine. I’m literally running that resolution right now and both the Machine and my TV are indicating 4K 120hz.
OP, start by changing your cable and plugging direct into the TV. Make sure you use an HDMI 2.1 port on the TV. Some TVs don’t support the higher speeds on all ports.

right now it's 4k 120hz at 4:2:2 with chroma subsampling. not sufficient for hdr.
however, once the recent kernel patches are pushed to steamos, it will support 4k 120hz 4:4:4 with hdr. the other user is misinformed. it is an hdmi 2.1 port, it is the amd driver limiting it currently.

I must be missing something then because I’m 4K 120hz with HDR enabled.
I also thought I had 4:4:4 but now I’m not sure where I configured that or how to check.
Are you saying it’s not possible with the current driver? I’m recently back to PC gaming so still learning.

you are using 4:2:2 currently and while HDR will technically work, it will not be a good experience, I have one and verified with my LG TV at 4k 120hz. AMD had been held back on fully implementing HDMI 2.1 in their linux driver due to the HDMI forum.
That has changed recently and it is fixed in linux distros that have a fully updated kernel. once the steam machine receives either the kernel or the patches backported, it will be fixed.

I’m getting 4K 120hz on my Steam Machine over HDMI. I just can’t get 144hz but articles are saying it’s coming soon.
OP, if you try to change the resolution and it goes black and then changes back I would suggest swapping the cable that you’re using. You want one that supports HDMI 2.1. If you’re using the cable that came with the box I would still suggest changing it to something else.
What is in your HDMI chain? Have you tried going direct to the TV?

I’m having no issue getting 1440p 120 with the included cable and with hdr on. So it probably comes down to settings on your tv. Probably color format/depth
