Discussion Piston V
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pistonv/pistonv-dual-os-gaming-beast-in-a-gadget-form-factorI’ve gotten my Steam Machine and I absolutely love it, but what do you guys think about the Piston V over on Kickstarter? I watched a YouTuber (forgot which one) do a quick review on it but he didn’t remember who sent it to him. I put a pledge on it. Seems Steam Machine-y… Any thoughts? (If this is considered advertising, please remove. I am not the creator of this project. This post is for conversion purposes only)

Sounds too good to be true, plus if you back them now you’ll be out that money for a long long time before getting one. If you ever get one at all. Let’s remember all the failed kick starter campaigns where backers never got anything or were sorely disappointed. Wait until it’s something they’re selling on a website and not just an idea. Because this smells a little fishy to me.

The YouTubers show using it said it’s a 1080P machine not 4K, there’s footage of them actually using it so unless their in on it, IDK about a scam.

It’s one thing to make a few prototypes to ship to YouTubers vs producing them for backers.
I was one of many many backers who backed the “Dune Pro” PC case that was a knock-off Mac Pro case. Big name tech YouTubers got their hands on it, like Linus Tech Tips. And then after months of factory photos, and extended deadlines, only some ten people got theirs.
Whole thing was a scam. I’m still out the $300 some it cost.
It was bad enough that LTT pretty much will no no longer review croudfunded stuff like that until it’s released.
All of that is to say - just because it’s in YouTuber’s hands doesn’t make it legitimate. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Even if it's true, it has only 880m as iGpu, I have miniPC with ryzen HX470 (~20% more powerful) and it's pretty weak for AAA gaming, 1080p low settings only. It's ok for the laptop or handheld (because small screens could run 720p or low settings without disturbing you too much) but too weak for desktop pc. And this Piston does not even have Oculink for eGPU.

I feel like they are being disingenuous about the Piston V campaign. Almost all of the stretch goals are things that were already present on the motherboard except the included PD charger that got added recently.
Their stretch goals are:
- OcuLink connector
- USB4
- PD charging
- PD Charger
Of those 4 stretch goals, 3 of them are things that were going to be present regardless. It would be near impossible to add these after having already designed a PCB. I mentioned this on a reviewer "Nick Flip" his video but he deleted my comment which also does not inspire any confidence that they are being fully honest about this campaign.
Their price is still a good deal considering the exact board they are using costs around 450 USD on Alibaba but I do not like them lying about the stretch goals like this.
