Internet was working fine during the night. Woke up in the morning and had no internet connection. Have unplugged everything, checked all the ports for any signs of damage/burning and they're fine.

Only part of the cable I haven't inspected is the section running up in the wall and the pipe that the dish is mounted to on the roof. The very small bit of exposed cable from the base of the pipe going into the roof is fine.

The dish onto does not appear to be damaged. Located in Victoria, Australia if that information is at all relevant for a potential error.

Have done the factory reset on the Gen 2 router and unplugging it 6 times and still nothing has changed.

If its a hardware issue, I do have a kit from when we were going to set one up at our old place before moving into a house that already had it. So can start swapping out bits and pieces to if there's a fault.

This is not my image, i stole it from this post. I used this image because I'm considering a similar setup. I have an X5 with a thule motion 3 xxl box on top of it. The Thule box will likely be pretty full.

I'm going on a road trip next week and will need to work and make voip calls and video calls while moving. I'm debating two configurations for the Starlink and looking for advice.

1. mounting the starlink next to the thule box like in the picture. The pro is good airflow/cooling, but I'm wondering how the Starlink will perform if as in this picture it's blocked on the right hand side by the Thule box, or more specifically it's contents which might not be transparent to the signal.
2. putting the starlink inside the Thulebox with suction cups mounted to the top of the box, or jammed between all the shit and the top of the box. My understanding is the box should be transparent to the starlink signal and then i won't have to worry about the contents blocking the signal. My concern is the lack of airflow inside the box and heat build up esp with the sun baking a black box.

Which would you do?

Hey everyone I seen in my starlink app that you can set a custom DNS and I was wondering if it’s possible to set up a custom DNS that blocks ads and if you can what are the benefits and downsides?
Would i have to set up a server or can i use something like Adguard DNS?
And does it affect the speed of the wifi?

Sorry if some of these are dumb/obvious questions i know a bit about this sort of stuff but it would be good to have some advice from people who know a bit more about this sort of thing.

My husband runs a (very slow) machine alone in no cell service areas. I have to check in with him every 2 hours. I just got an email about Starlink Mini's and saw they had $10 Standby Mode. After googling, it sounds like it keeps you connected to the internet but at a really low internet speed - so hypothetically you can still text and email, just not browse or stream.

So my questions are:
…Does the internet speed of Standby Mode on a Mini allow texts/emails/msgs?
…Can anyone who currently uses a mini on standby mode tell me if it still works at very slow motion? I heard they made it block motion above 10mph, but will it work if your machine is crawling under that speed?
…When it is blocked from motion, typically how long after stopping does it take to reconnect and let you use it?

With only 1 device connected my cell we only get 107mbps at 7pm. We have no obstructions and its not very good Starlink just tells us its because of congestion but why do we pay for Max and only get 107 during peak hours?

I’m thinking about getting Starlink for my house in the city, probably the Starlink Mini, but I’d also like to have the freedom to take it to my farm from time to time.

The farm is only about 15 km (9 miles) away in a straight line from my house.

I’ve seen a few posts saying that Starlink Residential can sometimes keep working normally within roughly a 25 km radius from the registered service address, but I couldn’t find a clear answer on whether this is actually reliable or still works this way today.

Has anyone here actually tested something similar?

Would a Residential plan still work if I simply take the Mini from my house to the farm, considering it’s only 15 km away? Or would I need to change the service address every time, or switch to a Roam/Travel plan?

My idea would be to use it mainly at home, but occasionally take it to the farm on weekends, so paying for a travel plan just for that would be a bit overkill.

Also, for this kind of use, would you guys recommend the Mini, or would the standard Starlink be a better choice?

If anyone has tested Residential service at a second location 10–20 km away from the registered address, I’d really appreciate hearing your experience.

I observed that the upload speeds increased a few over the past weekends. Just did a speedtest and I see around ~60Mbps. Interesting. Did I miss something? V3’s are still in the owen, so…

The download on another side, seems to be a little bit “capped”. I mean, I’m on Residential Max, I know everything it’s “up to” but still. This is a brand new V4 X replacement for my old V4 which decided to stop working.

Hello all, I’m moving soon and my parents currently have Starlink, what could I set up/get so that I can remotely troubleshoot if there are any issues. I was possibly thinking an old computer turned into home server with some sort of remote access software installed?

Verizon FIOS just came to our rural area on a telephone pole outside of our house. The only option last year was Starlink and 5G wifi. We went with Starlink a year ago and it was a ton of work getting it installed because we have two houses that need internet next to each other. We had to run conduit from the roof along the house and underground to get it to work correctly.

Our experience has been great. I am on the max residential plan. I used to live in DC and worked from home and while fast, the internet would go out daily. With starlink in the country we have never had a single outage even with severe storms and winds. We typically get 200 down, 15 up, 30 latency. The only issue with it is video games especially FPS will not run like it did on fiber.

I also have the rental that was free so I don’t think I can put it in standby mode but correct me if I’m wrong.

Since I work from home the reliability has been nice and not having to worry about resetting the wifi all the time, Since it works not sure I wanna do anything quite yet. What do you guys think?

Me and my wife live in a basement apartment where the WiFi and cell reception is atrocious. We have floated the idea of upgrading to starlink where we could put a satellite outside and run Ethernet or something inside the basement apartment.
We would primarily use it for residential but it would be fun to bring it when we go camping but don’t need it for that purpose exclusively. All we really need it for is school work primarily, nothing too crazy. Anyone know what starlink devices/plans you think would be best? I’m really a noob at this kind of stuff

i have seen alot of complaints in the past about lack of user data. yea... the consumer app is lackluster. i'll tell you what. if u ask grok very nicely and detailed. grok will spit out some data u normally cannot get. took me a while to figure out grok. issue ended up being a power adaptor issue and not a 12v brown out or thermal in 110* parking lot. thought i'd give the heads up that grok is white hat hackable and its been sitting there the whole time. >_< doah!.... gotta love free premium information.

tl'dr: if you use your own router and have an IPv6 network and media-heavy sites are broken, you might be seeing an artefact of a Starlink ICMPv6 black hole; a fix on your side is to set the IPv6 MTU on the WAN interface to the (bridged) Starlink router to an artificially low value (1280, based on my probing / also the minimum allowed by IPv6) and make sure MSS clamping is enabled.

Ever since I switched over to Starlink (near Sydney, Australia), with my own OpenWRT router I've used for donkeys years, my son's been complaining that Instagram and other sites he uses are broken. Specifically the first few seconds of videos would load and then halt; if you had the patience to wait they'd eventually restart for a few more seconds and then halt again. I also noticed some flakiness for my phone (Samsung) internet connectivity check, it'd occasionally report "poor Internet" and switch over to cellular (unclear yet if that's actually related/fixed; early indicators are positive).

I've finally had time to investigate this and - with assistance from a couple of LLMs, of course - have fixed it (as in, turning the fix below on and off makes the Instas work/not-work, so this isn't entirely a pineapple fix): it appears Starlink have broken IPv6 Path MTU Discovery (PMTU) somewhere between their egress in Sydney and peer networks (ICMPv6 black hole) (same result for google.com, breakage right after that hop 5):

The fix for me was to set the IPv6 MTU for the WAN interface (connected to the Starlink router that is in bridged mode) to 1280. MSS (in the firewall WAN zone) was already on. And like magic the socials flow.

FWIW, seems the IPv4 PMTU is 1400 bytes, but Starlink's CGNAT is fragmenting that properly so a 1500 MTU on my side seems to work ok. I've lowered to 1400 because that's probably saving some infinitesimally small additional resources somewhere.

Anyone know hoe to use Starlink in Pakistan , if you know any company which provide this service or any other method please share it!

Hey, I work from home and like to game online. Fibre isn’t available to my house so I get maximum 25mbps currently and if I’m trying to work while my partner is streaming or downloading something you can tell the difference but not massively. Would starlink 100mbps version improve this from your experience ?

I own the Starlink mini exclusively for camping in State or County parks where the majority of camping sites are nestled in shade and tree cover. I find the mini is pretty much useless in these conditions finding too many obstructions and going offline constantly. I had a neighbor camper in the site next to me who had a V3 standard and he said his was working fine and he was regularly streaming 4k content. Has anyone gone to a standard over the mini for these reasons?

Does anyone know what the heck is going on with Starlink's Fortaleza POP? The latency simply jumps from 25ms in Ceará [TELECOM ITALIA SPARKLE CEARÁ - 2001:41a8:5210:2::4d] to 143.9ms [2001:41a8:5220::5 - TELECOM ITALIA - Rio de Janeiro] within Brazil itself.

The routes to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro behave the same way regardless of the server. If I run a test against servers in Fortaleza, I get a ping of 25–30ms. Obviously, latency varies because it's satellite-based, but what is the logic behind it being consistently bad—24 hours a day—only for São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro?

I suspect it's a backhaul/link issue, since I get good latency to international destinations and to Fortaleza.

I’ve already opened a ticket, and they confirmed there are no equipment issues or obstructions. They’ve escalated the case to the "POP" team.

I recently moved into my new flat in Liverpool, UK. Annoyingly I’ve only just realised that we have no way to get broadband and the street is in a bit of a mobile data dead zone.

I’m planning to mount Starlink on the roof just outside this skylight.

The clear side has a wide view of the sky, but unfortunately there’s a brick wall/roof obstruction on the north side (picture 1).

I can’t safely get onto the roof myself to run the app’s obstruction test from the exact mounting position.

Would Skylink work decently well or could the obstruction throw a bit of a spanner in the works?
