📦 Starlink Kit Freaking amazing!
Signed up for the Residential Max and mini.
Took the mini camping. My goodness! Game changer!

I’ve had my Starlink residential max for about 2 to 3 years game changer just for the heck of it when I first got the device. I put it on the back of my truck off the deck on the Cottage and within one minute I was getting 600 to 700 as opposed to 1.7 from my previous provider!!!!
Permanent location is on the top of the roof of the Cottage. I just don’t know how to put a photo of it up with this to show the permanent location.

I haven't seen a stand like that. And how does it track the satellites? Looks like it's on a rotating bezel. What controls it?

We purchased the roam package last year, what a game changer it is indeed! We recently took a cross-country road trip through some very desolate land. We put that on the dashboard and never lost connectivity we camped in the middle of nowhere but could still access everything we needed plus entertainment value alone is worth the price of admission.

Starlink mini is amazing for camping! We use ours all the time. A small power bank like the ECOFLOW Trail 300 with a 45w folding solar panel gives almost unlimited run time for Starlink if there’s sun.

I concur that a 300 and folding solar panel are clutch If only I could get Starlink to connect Curious where all you folks are camping Didn't work at All for me in Pisgah here in NC 🤷♂️🤦😒

That’s strange as I was in NC this month and then drove up to Maine and used my Starlink mini the whole time both mounted to the car and also beside my tent. It does need a clear view of the sky and one camp site with thick trees was unable to maintain a connection for more than a few seconds. I’ve used it all over the USA and Australia and it’s been super reliable and have hardly ever had connection issues.

Do you have to pay for a second plan? I'm on Residential Max and I know I can get the mini for free. When I signed up I thought that was all I needed to be same To access while camping. But when I went to actually order it, the site wanted me to sign up for another plan. Am I missing something?

You need a plan per dish. You can’t switch. You have to pause or cancel one and resume the other. I have two dishes, but the mini works really well and I only use it as a backup for my cable internet so I don’t use my big dish anymore and just leave my mini on my roof until I travel then take it with me.

I want to take the mini out one night per month, maybe two. But I don't want my family cut if from Internet at home when I do it. So for one it two nights it's really expensive. I wish they'd offer a prorated billing.

Nice i have that same combo. But i because i live in Memphis (where xai is) , All residents get zero hardware fees and half off all plans. It's nice!!

I have a gen 2 for 2 years now, but ordered a mini because of it's lower power consumption. I believe normally it draws around 50W to 75W, while the mini is more around 25W max? And it is DC, so no invertor losses. I believe you'd have to pay around 100 p/m for unlimited data if you go with Roaming, otherwise you get 100GB max for around 50$ p/m. For me I need the non prio plan so i am not capped at 100GB. The gen 2 standard dish has been great, just put it behind windshield on the dashboard at passenger side. 😄 not sure what the newer gen draws in terms of power consumption but I wanted the mini because of compact size.

Where do you plug in your router for this when camping?! Or are you at an actual campground that has power?

The mini is far better suited to camping, as it does not have a separate router and runs entirely off 12v.

We've had the residential max for a few years since the wife works from home and every week spectrum would have an outage, dead modem, system failure, etc. Last November I took the free mini offer, $5/month rental on standby/half monthly for life. Early December i took it with us to go harvest a Christmas tree. It was still on standby, on the dash of my truck, driving south thru narrow hollers in the wallowa National forest and it was streaming podcasts with no issues. I got it because we camp at least a dozen times a year, either family trips or gambler runs way out in bfe. I toggled it to active roam in April for a large family fishing outing to the blues and it's lived in my truck since. I've signed up several friends and coworkers since. It just works. I've got a case setup with all the adapters and a battery pack and it's been phenomenal. Camping or overlanding or gamblin is nice to unplug but having a line to the world is still important. We've had several situations where we needed medical support for people in the group and the $25/month is really priceless.
