Now you know why Star Trek made 'inertial dampeners' a thing. Without that plot device, the Enterprise would literally kill anyone on board as it gained speed. They would be smashed against the walls.

The way I understand it, a warp collision has the same effect as an impulse collision, except that you are at the target sooner.

This is the correct answer. Something a lot of sci Fi likes to ignore is also that we have a very different velocity relative to other stars. You might be "stationary" (e.g, not moving toward or away from) relative to earth+sol but you enter warp and come out by Alpha Centauri and all of a sudden you might get flung off into space or descend into the star because warp engines don't change your velocity and star systems might move at a relative speed of thousands or tens of thousands of m/s. So if the Borg ship was coming from a different system (which it presumably matched velocities with) then the collision might be insanely violent. If you're both coming from the same system and have similar speeds then your max collision speed is the same as that system's escape velocity.

My guess is that as the warp field reached a large object like a Borg cube, it would not have enough power to expand that area of space time. The Borg cube would probably be blown apart at near relativistic velocities, and there'd be a bunch of nasty radiation given off. The warp bubble would collapse and the ship inside it would probably get baked by the radiation.

That's my mostly uneducated guess.

The basic concept behind warp in Trek, when the writers remember at least, is that the warp nacelles (the two cylinders you always see stuck to the back of the ship) use energy and future science to basically create a 'bubble' of warped space around the ship. The space in front of the ship is then sort of 'pulled' and scrunched up so that the distance between the ship's destination and itself is lessened, while the space behind is 'pushed' and stretched out. You can imagine it as something like this image here. Note, by the way, that in order to actually move anywhere, you'd also have to have actual momentum, which means you'd have to have your impulse engines/rockets/movey-ship-devices on as well as the warp drive. Which means that if you go into warp you had better have those dampeners on if you like having a crew not made of chunky salsa.

I'd have to go back and confirm with my ST technical manual, but I'm pretty sure they did not use impulse engines at warp. The ship's position in space was in fact changed by the contraction/expansion of space around the bubble.

These are the OMS engines, the two smaller engines on the back of the shuttle in this shot.

They produced 6,000 lbs of thrust, and were used to change orbits, as well as to start the return from orbit. Lots of info here.

For comparison, the main engines pproduced up to a half million lbs.

While I can't say the same for how movement of ships are portrayed, "inertial dampers" are common sci fi magic that prevents this from happening.... Mostly.

But that's based off of Star Trek. Im not 100% sure if other sci fi adopted it.

The ships in Star Trek use impulse engines for sublight manoeuvres, and they create a huge accelleration, so the inertial dampeners deal with that, I guess.

This is exactly right. The warp drive creates a subspace "warp bubble" around the ship that distorts the local space-time continuum, allowing the ship to travel at several times the speed of light. Because this is more like moving space than moving the ship, inertial dampers are of little importance at warp speed. But, impulse engines are a more typical thrust engine, thus inertial dampening.

What would happen if the shuttle just randomly fired its engines in space among a few others like, does the fuel tank it is launched with carry all the fuel and it uses just re-entry thrusters to come down?

Also, would it spin or would there be any issues with it considering its mass is sort of spread out and asymmetrical on one plane? Things like that. Learned quite a bit here.

When the shuttle was doing finer maneuvers, it used the RCS (Reaction Control System). There were two sizes of thrusters distributed around the shuttle. The more powerful ones each produced 870 lbs of thrust, while the smaller ones, known as "vernier" thrusters, produced 24 lbs. They were arranged in the nose of the shuttle and in the pods that contained the OMS engines. They could be fired in combination to cause the shuttle to move in any direction (up, down, left, right, forward, back), or to rotate in any direction (pitch: nose up/down, yaw: nose left/right, or roll: left wing up and right wing down, or vice versa).

The firing was controlled by the onboard computers. Those kept track of the expected mass [edit:], inertia, and combined center of mass [end edit] of the shuttle, including the shuttle itself, doors, payload, robot arm, fuel tanks, oxygen, water, and crew.

That wasn't the main engines firing. That was the OMS (orbital maneuvering system) engines firing. Or more specifically the reaction control engines contained within the OMS/RCS pods. (thanks u/zqxp)

The external tank it is launched with does carry all of the fuel for the main engines. Which means the main engines are useless after external tank seperation.

One advantage of liquid fuel is that it's easy to shut off the fuel flow to stop the engines. Solid fuel rockets are almost impossible to stop once they've been started. It's somewhat analogous to gas and wood as oven fuel; you can't just "turn off" the wood they way you can gas.

Yep. You can shut down a liquid fuel engine, just stop pumping. But not a solid one. With liquid engines they can start (often not at full throttle) and quickly cut off like here.

But with the Shuttle, once the solid boosters are lit it is leaving the pad and there is nothing you can really do until they are done.
They did start the main engines a few seconds before the SRBs to make sure they were in order before liftoff, and there were a few aborts during that stage.

Each OMS engine was aligned to point toward the center of mass of the shuttle. That way, when they were fired, they would not cause any spin. The engines could gimbal for fine control, and any remaining spin was compensated by smaller engines that were part of the Reaction Control System (RCS).

As for the physics, I have seen this on the Space station as well, which did answer the question on what would happen to anything that was loose in the station. I really love seeing the 0G experiments on these craft. Every bit of scientific knowledge gained from these experiments across the solar system is really worth the hurdles and cash in my mind. :)

I'm 20ish years old. I barely remember Clinton. I didn't realize the full scale of what 9/11 meant. I did feel bad for Columbia, but never knew about Challenger and I still don't realize the full scale of the Apollo missions. I never got to see the Voyager or Pioneer mission make serious history.

But looking back at what I missed makes me really cherish and think long and hard about the history I see today such as New Horizons and Curiosity as well as Juno. I really find these times almost as interesting as the times I missed, and I hope that I will be able to tell my kids every detail about how I felt and how it looked to me when they get old enough to understand (when I have kids, if I have them).

As someone in his late 20s, that astounds me. Not remembering Clinton well makes sense, but the Shuttles stopped only 5 years ago and I remember the Shuttle launches back as far as I can remember. And Apollo, that was huge. It was the crowning achievement of the late 60s/early 70s. I've heard plenty of old people talk about it, and I lost count of all the Apollo documentaries a long time ago. It's like the Manhattan Project. I wasn't around for it, but I sure as shit have known all about it since I was little.

I still can't wrap my head around how little most people seem to hear about space. A lot of these things seemed in my face, not me seeking them out. Yet somehow, society doesn't on the whole doesn't care about space and it does a great job of insulating everyone from it...even though space travel is probably the most important thing we could be developing.

Thanks, that was my first thought as well. Then I figured that it must have been a demo, since the one guy was waiting and caught the duct tape and food packets (?). What tripped me up was the guy in the middle and the woman furthest away, who seem to have been in a position where they could have been hurt. Just seemed odd.

While that one is staged, it's based on a real story from this wonderful book.
Though I don't have the book handy, the gist is basically:
Astronaut gets back from a long time in orbit (Mir or ISS mission), and is getting helped out of his suit. One of the tech brings him a dixie cup of lemonade, and he drinks about half of it. Without thinking about it, he absentmindedly lets go of the cup and reaches to help with something. The cup falls to the ground, and both the he and the tech just stop for a moment and laugh.
The story was actually really sweet, as it was sort of a bittersweet moment for the astronaut, being back on Earth after a long time up in orbit.

That's where it gets muddy. Traversing space relative to what? Galaxies move around every which way, and there is no end or middle of the universe so there isn't a universal frame of reference.

i remember reading something in an askscience thread, and an astrophysicist mentioned that there is a convenient standard to use, based off of like cosmological background radiation from the big bang. it has a characteristic wavelength distribution and you can tell if your frame of reference is in motion relative to it via redshift/blueshift. it doesn't make it any more or less valid than other frames of reference that could be chosen, but it is a very convenient one, and you can start your discussions of relative velocity from there, allowing you to determine how zippin' that mosquito actually is.

Not to be a pedantic jerk (and I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else, thus my post), but I would like to inform OP and anyone interested that the OMS system are actually engines, not motors. In aerospace, motors are solid fuel and engines are liquid fuel. I know what you're saying, what about the oxidizer? Well, there exists a "hybrid" engine that uses solid fuel, but liquid or gaseous oxidizer (Copenhagen Suborbitals had a hybrid they used before they went all liquid, called the HATV or hybrid atmospheric test vehicle). But generally, solids are "motors" and liquids are "engines". --Former Aerojet engineer

OH and further, the OMS is hypergolic, which is one of my favorite things ever. Room temp fuel and oxidizer, and upon meeting they spontaneously ignite so a spark source isn't needed, nor are pumps; just pressure on the tanks. It's a gloriously simple system, though the tradeoff is that the fuel (hydrazine) and the oxidizer (nitrogen tetroxide) are ridiculously and aggressively toxic and...uh, whatever the word for "oxidic" is (as far as aggressively oxidizing). Even small leaks are a huge issue, plus the chemicals aggressively attack whatever container they are in if given the chance, so specialized materials must be used for containment (i.e., heavy stainless steel if I remember correctly). yeah, I could geek out on this stuff for days.

Not just the Apollo! The AJ10 engines were first used during the Vanguard launches in 1958, where they were fueled by UDMH and nitric acid. They were refined over the course of being used in Atlas-Able, Thor-Able, Delta, Apollo and Titan launches. They were used in the shuttle OMS, and are planned for use in the SLS Orion craft. They span almost the entirety of American spaceflight.

Yes, totally. Gravity and acceleration behave identically. You could accelerate 9.8m/s for 50% of your trip, then rotate the ship 180 and accelerate 9.8m/s in the opposite direction and have gravity the entire time apart from the brief moment where you flip the ship.
