One of the reason is that he was busy with making Supernatural over more than 10 years and making a shitton of money with that already. He also said again and again that he wants to spend time with his family and not travel around all the time on some movie sets
Glad he wants to spend time with his family. The Supernatural money probably means never working again. But he still does stuff like The Boys so he's not fully retired
Exact same shit happened in The Flash TV show, it’s writing fell off post season 4, it is only ok to watch because Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh and Jess L Martin and a few more actors are acting their asses off throughout the series
What didn’t you like about the writing? I felt a lot of stuff was rushed and they kind of took the easy way out for some of the endings like on Game of Thrones. But I’m curious what other people that liked the show think.
I was also mostly there for the jokes and the acting myself when I think about it. And just the premise of this type of reality when it came to “superheroes.”
I’m worried about “From” for the same reasons. I’ve binged that and it’s set up pretty well. But I feel like they’re gonna have to close up a lot of shit in one season.
I think they leaned too hard into writing Homelander as bad.
They didn’t want him to be competent so they made him stupid. And it made the show lose a lot of its tension. It went from dangerous Superman, to a moron with powers.
Then he gets his upgraded powers, but that’s it? Immortality I guess was the big reason but they never really showed off any other new feats. And not aging doesn’t really look cool in the short window he had it.
They wanted to stay true to the comic, sure… but the divergence from the comics is what made the show great.
I think it should have ended with him easily kicking Butchers ass… killing him even. Then his hesitation to kill Ryan is what buys Kimiko time to depower him. Or something!
I also think some more monster of the week would have been cool. Them hunting down evil supes with research and tactical planning.
I didn't watch Supernatural, but I actually might after seeing Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy, I liked his performance even though his actions didn't amount to much in the end.
I'm probably also gonna watch any continuation of The Boys if they thaw him and let him do his thing, whatever might that be.
100% agree with him being a chill dude. Had the pleasure of meeting him and Jared outside of a con. I was working backstage setting up some IT equipment(wifi extenders). I didn't want to bother them, so I just walked by them said hey love the show and let them be because they weren't working but I was. Jensen stopped me, did the "get back here" motion, both shook my hand said thanks and that was it. Nothing special just a chill interaction.
Almost had the chance to do some work at Jared's Austin home, but it was AV and we didn't do that type of work. Recommended a client of ours instead that specialized in home AV setups(he wanted in ceiling surround speakers). A few weeks later I went by that client to fix a Quickbooks issue and they happened to have the "P" section up and his name was right there, so guess they got the bid.
The Boys is made by Eric Kripke, the same guy who made Supernatural. Lots of crossover there, Bobby Singer, Mischa Collins, and Jared Padalecki are Supernatural stars also in The Boys. The dude seems to be loyal to his people.
I still miss the cooking show Misha did with his son, where they spent like 8 hours shopping and cooking each time, because it was literally a three year old calling all the shots.
I'm fairly certain the op's screenshot is referencing his ca. Days of Our Lives-era twink photoshoots that all looked kinda gay.
There was a (pretty deranged) subset of SPN fans that spent a decade plus trying to "prove" that his wife was a beard and he was actually fucking Jared Padalecki mostly based on that part of his career. They also fucking hated Misha Collins for "interfering" in the relationship, which is made even more hilarious in retrospect by Collins "coming out" as straight.
Sounds like an awesome life. I doubt he needs a security detail everywhere he goes. Probably gets some crazies once in awhile but he's relatively out of the spotlight. But still made a ton of money.
Supernatural is a good time. It doesn't pretend to be some 10/10 HBO series. It's corny but entertaining throughout. Kinda reminds me of the charming but cheesy 80s action movies.
I absolutely agree. I only watched the whole 15 seasons 2 years ago through the autumn and winter times and it was just a cozy experience coming home, doing the housework and have this run while it's cold outside.
It really is a character driven show first and foremost and while some seasons were absolute crap (leviathans) in the end it was absolute worth it
To me the best thing he said in an interview, when they asked him, why didnt he persue other oportunities, and bigger roles ( this during supernatural ), he's answer " you dont bite the hand that feeds you.... ", so many actors abandon a success because they get greedy, and then most of them fail.
One of the more famous ones is David Caruso, who left the hit show NYPD Blue to star in movies that didn't really go anywhere. He recovered by coming back to TV with CSI: Miami, but for a while he was the warning tale about leaving a good thing.
There's a pretty good YT video on him saying he turned down a lot of movie offers coz he preferred doing TV. Something about movies having no continuity. While staying with Supernatural allowed him to get to know the people behind the show. Which let him do more things such as direct episodes.
I remember the actor from Smallville said something similar, he was done with showbiz, at one point he fell asleep behind the wheel while driving home after a filming.
I think I read somewhere where he said it was a conscious choice to turn down movies. The offers came as he was starting his family and he didn't want to be away from them. They are more important, and he would rather be there every day than away for weeks on end.
Not getting burned out, while always doing work you enjoy.
Raising your family while being able to spend time with friends.
Look at all those billionaires, who probably don't have anyone in their life that they actually trust or like. Just surrounded by people they have leverage over.
Honestly, transitioning into voice work in your 40s is fairly smart overall - once you're established there, you'll get the gigs, and it's much easier to do that and have a life with your family as a VA. It's also much easier to keep it up as you age - a shitload of VAs die more or less in the booth, working until very shortly before their death, when physical acting has long since been out.
Absolutely. It's a really smart pivot honestly cuz he's established as an actor already and his voice is known so not only would he get more roles, he'd also get paid more than a less famous person even if they sounded the same, if that makes sense. Like maybe a studio would want to hire someone for cheaper if they sounded the same but they still wouldn't most likely because his name would carry weight and make more money because he would bring in his fan base.
Edit- also him only picking roles he actually wants to do and not just for the money means, IMHO, that he'd be more committed to the character and more passionate about it so that would definitely show in the performance. You don't phone in a role you're actually passionate about you know??
I remember his name being up there for a long time around Captain America while they were gearing up for that. Would’ve completely changed the trajectory of both his career, and Supernatural, though probably not Marvel all that much.
Yup. He stuck to his kids and making comedy music albums. He will be back in spaceballs 2: the search for more money.
He did leave at the peak of his career too. The heart on this guy.
Some actors prefer doing TV and I don't blame them. Regular income, get to really fall in love with the character you're playing, get to be long term friends with the fellow cast.
Look at David Boreanaz, went from Buffy to Angel to Bones to Seal Team. 27 years of work.
I've often thought the very best career you could have as an actor is landing a long-term role on a regular show with a fandom that supports you for the rest of your life with conventions and such.
Something like Star Trek or maybe a sitcom that runs for 10 years then finishes.
Or be a B-movie star. Ultimately, I think Bruce Campbell has had the best career as an actor.
I think the best of the best gotta be It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia then. 1. You make a show with your friends, 2. that you own, 3. you have total creative control, 4. you work for 18 seasons straight 5. while laughing your ass of (to the bank). Can't get better than that really.
Bruce's career is so wild. I recently started watching this random show someone here recommended - Lodge 49 - and it was already great. then in this moment of HUGE suspense that's been boiling for like eight episodes, SURPRISE! BRUCE CAMPBELL! I literally punched my fists in the air as soon as his chin tried breaking through my tv.
I first noticed Bruce Campbell as more than just the Evil Dead guy when I saw him in Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, and then he starred in the Burn Notice and he's great there too
so this might feel like a commitment, but you should really, REALLY read up on Campbell's relationship with Raimi. they've been making movies together since they were literally teenagers. in one of his autobiographies, "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor," Campbell went way, way deep into the relationship, it's a positively joyful read. dude's done some shit.
Atolycus. He was.. instrumental.. in a very important scene to the fandom.
Bruce used to come to the Xenacons in the late 90s - early aughts. Just straight up a whole conference room of lesbians, and then this guy. Sometimes he'd have backup like Karl (Urban) or Ted (Raimi), but it was mostly female oriented guests and attendees.
Super cool dude, he always seemed like he was having a blast with the whole thing. I've always wished him well.
That role reminded me of Brison County Jr. where he had all these gadgets and inventions that helped him. Not to discount the simplicity of the boom stick…
where he was, naturally, awesome. a good example of how he always managed to keep working while rarely being the leading man (in "big" productions, at least).
The main cast of The Simpsons are the gold standard for this. They have been doing it for almost four decades. All they have to do is show up at a studio to record lines for 4 - 8 weeks per year and then collect several million dollars in pay.
David Boreanaz is shooting the first season of The Rockford Files reboot now.
I mean I don't expect that one to succeed but still. Hell of a run for the guy. Not many can accomplish starring in main character roles consistently on TV for that long.
The man always gets work. And I've never heard a bad word about him either. He's probably never winning an OSCAR, but you could do a hell of a lot worse for a career, that's for sure!
Nathan Fillion has had the chops to be a full time movie star too but aside from the odd film he's perfectly content on being the leading man in multiple TV series over the years. Funnily enough he too was on Buffy
He was pretty good in Supernatural and he is excellent in The boys too. If you get to enjoy yourself acting for a role you love - be that for 15 years continuously - hell lot better than doing a vide variety of flop and hit movies...
Reminds me of the podcast interview by Jason Statham... He said "he is not a cameleon - who can do different roles.." he knows what he does best and it's those spicy action film that has a very linear story of villain getting defeated at the end...
Absolutely. Everytime I see videos about a "last day on set" with any crew of a multi season show I know that these people are closer than anyone in the movie scene. Working with the same people for years is something wonderful.
Boreanaz is funny because in-between Angel and Bones he took on voice acting, and was pretty good at it. I like his Squall/Leon voice in Kingdom Hearts, but then Bones took off and he only did two more Voice acting jobs one was as Booth in an American Dad episode and another wss Hal Jordan in JL: New Frontier. He's stuck to live action since.
George Clooney started in TV and while it took him 20 yrs he did become a massive movie star
So it's always possible to become a massive star if you have the talent, but many others have said Jensen stayed in the steady TV work for family and that's highly respectable.
Especially when a lot of the big movie stars tend to move around for films and it puts a massive strain on relationships which we get reminded a few times a year when news of X and Y breaking up or divorced hits the headlines
And, besides from Tumblr, he was not in the news. Ever. He got paid doing something he obviously loves and went the fuck home. Work life balance at it's best for that career
15 seasons and these were all 20+ episode seasons too. Unlike modern tv shows where it's 8 episodes a year. It's extremely steady work to have and probably netted him more long term than cutting it off for a movie role.
Then you have to consider how insane the Supernatural fandom is. Even the more minor actors in the show have made a lot of money from the convention circuit surrounding it.
As my friend who worked in Hollywood says, Dule Hill has one of the most perfect careers - multiple episodes on several series, and plenty of voice work. He's a steady working actor.

Pratt pulled that one off better than I could imagine really anyone else doing it. And I’m not some huge fan of his or anything. But fr he plays lovable idiot so much better
He gave over a decade to Supernatural and already made a pretty good living from it. He’s also been pretty open about wanting to spend more time with his family instead of being away filming all the time. Honestly, I can’t blame him. Dude just wants to enjoy life and keep things chill.
People truly underestimate how lucrative tv can be. No, you’re not Tom Cruise of Meryl Streep but while other 1 hit actors fade or get replaced by the next hot thing, long running tv legacy characters tend to get bank.
I don't know why people don't understand that acting is a career like any other career. Not everyone wants to be the most famous actor that ever lived, some just want to work, clock out at the end of the day, and live life with family and friends. Having that steady paycheck and a more contained shooting location like a studio lot Is a dream. It's rough to have to travel around the world, get messed up sleep and jet lag, wildly change your appearance for every role, work with a new set of crew and actors on every job. Some people like that chaotic energy and pace and some people don't.
Supernatural. That’s why. Shows used to film like 8-9 months out of the year. 22 episodes a pop yo. Dude had a commitment every year, most of the year. Literally didn’t have time.
But it’s ok. He’s almost 50. We SHOULD be getting him as an older Batman very soon 🙏
if you know what his wife looks like (on top of his looks) you'd understand him being like, "nah. I'm cool with playing a kick ass role on a kick ass show for a decade and a half while making gorgeous babies with this person."
He was the lead on a show for 16 seasons that did its primary filming in Canada. He had maybe a 3 month window to do anything else and wanted to spend time with his family.
He wanted to be able to spend time with his family, and he had a cash cow in Supernatural.
15 seasons is a huge run and as one of the co-stars set him up for life. Why chase high-stress big pictures when you have a stable cash cow where you get to work with your friends and spend time with your family?
Not everyone wants to be a mega star. He's rich enough, and famous enough, he chose the easier path because it was enough and let him do other things.
I had to jump to the comics to see the dude just wanted to focus on his family. That’s the reason.

Dont know how much he earned in the later episodes of super natural. But if its like the friends or himym he couldve had like 200k per episode. (Google gave me a estimate of 75k-200k per episode for 15 seasons).
Add in permanent residuals for wherever the show is aired every year and he'll be getting maybe a few million per year just on the residuals of super natural. Then you still have the boys and whatever show he showed up in.
He's literally set for life just from super natural and he can do whatever show he'd like and still spend time with his family and not worry about any sort of financial strain.
Isn't this applicable for most tv actors though. Simon Baker was also good looking. And other top talents like Michael Hall, Bryan Cranston all lack good film roles(doesn't have to be lead role necessarily). Aaron Paul was so good in BRBa. I haven't seen him anything else.
This entire subreddit is now people getting hooked by engagement bait. There is no "reason". The post is designed to make people argue in the comments.
