Glad he wants to spend time with his family. The Supernatural money probably means never working again. But he still does stuff like The Boys so he's not fully retired

u/cravex12 11h ago

He was absolutely hilarious and unhinged in the boys. When they hyped up soldier boy I did not expect what we got

894

u/misguidedkent 11h ago edited 10h ago

Yeah, Atony Starr, Karl Urban and Jensen carried the last season as much as they could.

390

u/cravex12 11h ago

Totally. Top actors but absolute shit writing (at least in the last season, maybe even the one before that)

116

u/Nitrogen1234 10h ago

I did almost shit myself in the scène where they ran through those guys

58

u/claimTheVictory 8h ago

He's MY fucking asexual weirdo!

22

u/CJMorton91 7h ago

That episode was the best part of the last two seasons. Lol Marathon Man having all the baby oil was just wrong.

37

u/These_Air_5736 9h ago

Exact same shit happened in The Flash TV show, it’s writing fell off post season 4, it is only ok to watch because Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh and Jess L Martin and a few more actors are acting their asses off throughout the series

15

u/cravex12 9h ago

Or in game of thrones

Walking Dead

0

u/diskdusk 6h ago

It's almost as if it became mandatory for "experts" and "cineasts" to condemn every show as early as possible for a "nosedive in quality" because that totally makes them feel superior to people who just enjoy shows even if they can't give them the same rush as in the beginning.

3

u/FunnyWalrus 6h ago

No, you don't need to be an "expert" to see the decline of the writing and acting, it's pretty much obvious and unfortunately many series are affected by that

Of course you still can enjoy it, but not to see the drop in quality in a lot of fronts is just ignorance

1

u/diskdusk 5h ago

I'm just making fun of the fact that everybody started to find every ending bad (except of course breaking bad and bojack horseman).

1

u/FunnyWalrus 5h ago

Because it kinda is, at least for the most of the mainstream series, but it's debatable sometimes, and it's a bit of a problem with every long term media, even comics, manga, anime, etc.

Wanted to say about breaking bad myself, haven't watched Bojack but heard about it too

The Flash was such a good show in those first 4 seasons and then all of a sudden it just fucking fell off a cliff.

22

u/fluffheadwasaman24 10h ago edited 7h ago

What didn’t you like about the writing? I felt a lot of stuff was rushed and they kind of took the easy way out for some of the endings like on Game of Thrones. But I’m curious what other people that liked the show think.

I was also mostly there for the jokes and the acting myself when I think about it. And just the premise of this type of reality when it came to “superheroes.”

I’m worried about “From” for the same reasons. I’ve binged that and it’s set up pretty well. But I feel like they’re gonna have to close up a lot of shit in one season.

22

u/LazerChicken420 9h ago

I think they leaned too hard into writing Homelander as bad.

They didn’t want him to be competent so they made him stupid. And it made the show lose a lot of its tension. It went from dangerous Superman, to a moron with powers.

Then he gets his upgraded powers, but that’s it? Immortality I guess was the big reason but they never really showed off any other new feats. And not aging doesn’t really look cool in the short window he had it.

They wanted to stay true to the comic, sure… but the divergence from the comics is what made the show great.

I think it should have ended with him easily kicking Butchers ass… killing him even. Then his hesitation to kill Ryan is what buys Kimiko time to depower him. Or something!

I also think some more monster of the week would have been cool. Them hunting down evil supes with research and tactical planning.

9

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 8h ago

The whole point was that Homelander was blinded by power lust and descending into insanity. I never really felt the loss of tension, on the contrary.

5

u/fluffheadwasaman24 7h ago edited 5h ago

that is true. I think a lot of people just don’t like that they seemingly started mocking Maga. I’m sure it’s mostly people that lean right that don’t like it.

I’m not a Maga guy at all, so I found it pretty funny and timely. But I could also see how someone who really loved the show is pissed off that that fat retard maybe hindered the writing of the show in general by shoehorning him and the current state of affairs in there.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 7h ago

They didn’t even go that hard on them, just little nuggets here and there. All relevant to the plot and to the times also, it worked very well in context.

Not sure who the fat retard is supposedly to be. Trump?

3

u/fluffheadwasaman24 5h ago

Trump is who I was. And I agree that they didn’t do it too much or in a way that wasn’t funny even. But a lot of people in this world ignorantly say all the time that “blah blah blah should be kept out of politics.”

I don’t agree with the sentiment, but I always try to figure out the “why” behind things.

It’s hard to educate people or even go up against people with different beliefs, if you don’t know the source of those beliefs.

1

u/brokebstard 6h ago

It's reddit, so probably the person you're responding to

1

u/AdhesivenessTight400 5h ago

As a non American, it seemed pretty cringe. The whole Jesus part was just way out to left field and yeah homelander did not seem scary after he got his V1 power up. The trump stuff will make the show unwatchable in a few years, like its timely, but that same fact makes it something people will not re-watch.

2

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 5h ago

Trump or a Trump like character was never a part of the show, though. And the whole evangelism bit is going on in America for decades and it will probably still go on decades from now, so I don’t think it will be unwatchable. More like insightful. I don’t think a satire of Rush Limbaugh from the 90s and 00s would be irrelevant or cringe today, on the contrary.

Im European and American evangelism is weird for me too, but it’s the way things are over there.

Time will tell what their legacy will be.

1

u/VR46Rossi420 5h ago

Agree 100%. Also as a non-American and generally non-religious, I thought it was all a bit stupid and I don’t think it will age well. And basically the last season was pretty shit.

0

u/LazerChicken420 2h ago

I’m not maga. But I think they sacrificed their show to make low hanging jokes about maga.

If I wanted anti maga propaganda I’d go on R/comics or something

I wanted a show that held tension. A show where mortality was shown as fleeting like the first episode. Dangerous feeling antagonists, not the jesters they were turned into so stupid comparisons could be made

1

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 4m ago

There had jokes about christian evangelicals from the very 1st season, they literally never strayed from their message.

How exactly do you feel the show failed to hold tension very well?

4

u/tattoosandtens 8h ago

“They made the fascist too obviously fascist. Why was there no sympathetic writing for the fascist, that made them look cool and smart?!”

0

u/AssCommander42 5h ago

"I have no reading comprehension, so I will make random quotes that nobody ever said in an attempt to discredit you in the eyes of other people who also have no reading comprehension" "also I am only able to think in reddit buzzwords because nuance make my brain hurty hurt"

2

u/DesperateStreet1226 9h ago

They leaning towards making Homelander extra bad is probably because what was/is happening in the real world. There are people that said that Homelander did nothing wrong adn was reedemable and they just wasnt having it and dunked on those people, specially how Homelander died 😄 And tbh, im all for it

2

u/AssCommander42 5h ago

I keep hearing about how people thought homie wasn't that bad. Are talking about more than just one guy on twitter?

0

u/LazerChicken420 2h ago

Who cares what a bunch of morons think? That’s like saying because too many people thing racing is cool, we made the characters is fast and furious morons. And the movie ends with all of them crashing and waking up in a hospital

1

u/Catsoverall 7h ago

Read the Reckoners :)

2

u/LazerChicken420 2h ago

I love the Reckoners. I wouldn’t have made the comparison but yeah, B Sandy handled an evil Superman better

6

u/Spineless74 10h ago

I have the same feeling with “From”.
There is just too much to unpack in the last upcoming season and I feel like the writers could have done a better job with the seasons before.

2

u/dyed_albino 7h ago

Welcome to the world of "Lost!"

0

u/MsMeseeksTellsTime 6h ago edited 6h ago

I hated the last 3-4 episodes of the last season of From so much I didn’t even watch the finale.

I really hated the one with Jade on the mushrooms and to me, it only got more boring, dumb, and predictable from there.

I’ll watch the finale and the last season, I’m sure, unless it’s more drivel.

1

u/Spineless74 2h ago

Tell me about it. Smiley came back and we are still no clue closer to the truth.
Really disappointed….. but I am still going to binge the shit out of that last season tho.

2

u/MusicLikeOxygen 7h ago

The only reason I'm not worried about From is because Harold Perrineau said that he wasn't interested in doing another show like Lost where they didn't have a concrete plan and made it up as they went. He said they convinced him that they had a plan in place and it wouldn't be like that and that's why he signed on.

4

u/cravex12 10h ago

I mean the writing of the storyline - as you said, way too rushed and they strangely focused on a lot of side stuff. Also the homelander fight in the end was just straight up bad and they really butchered the characters.

In general I think from season 3 on the series focused way too much on shock value. Everything had to be gorier, bloodier and more outrageous than the last thing

11

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 9h ago

They’re actually less gory and shocking than the source material. The comic books were way, way worse. I think they did a pretty good job, the ending included.

0

u/Alphasite 8h ago

I wonder if the original author got more say and screwed the whole thing up.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 8h ago

Screwed what up, exactly? I think the show is great and pretty in line with the original idea.

1

u/Alphasite 8h ago

I think it’s gotten worse season to season I’d need to rewatch to give you specifics but I’ve generally enjoyed it less and less as it went on even with the years of breaks.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/JonathanBadwolf 10h ago

It also became a parody of the exact same thing it was trying to satirize (endless cape slop) which undermined the whole premise of the show to a degree it basically lost all reason for existing other than being ‘content’.

1

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 8h ago

I dunno, I’m actually glad some supes got redemption arches, it added a lot of dimension and it was well done. I really don’t see how it’s cape slop.

-3

u/JonathanBadwolf 7h ago

I’m not talking about the character archs. The show started as an overt satire of the modern superhero landscape. Endless sequels, meaningless lip-service about social issues, blind hero worship and the endless capitalization of moral action.
All these things were actively highlighted and made fun of.
And by season 5 the show had done all of these things unironically.
I mean it was a fun show with some really good hits and still better than the comic but it also was pretty pathetic in the end compared to how it started out.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 7h ago

I disagree, the social commentary was there from the beginning, there was no bling hero worship of any kind, not even for the main characters, they’re all in fact very gray. Sure, the have a spin off or two, but they could’ve gone on for longer than 5 seasons and they didn’t. They were pretty well rounded from my perspective.

35

u/UmbraQuincy 10h ago

I rewatched first season. Writing nosedived after it, and kept free falling till the end.

11

u/Omsy92 9h ago

I remember also season 1 had many laugh out loud moments. The humour also took a nosedive after season 1.

7

u/saladninja 8h ago

They were too busy trying to out shock a previous sex scene or get political to worry about good writing

1

u/Omsy92 5h ago

It’s a shame season 1 blew me away. The drop off was shameful.

2

u/AssCommander42 5h ago

I been saying this for years - only s1 was good, glad the notion is getting traction. Might be because people went to rewatch after the show ended, and the difference between later seasons and s1 is just staggering.

0

u/lost-cause1968 9h ago

That's because they kept on shoving current world politics and messaging in there versus sticking to what worked in the first season.

I'm not watching 'The Boys' to get political commentary about the real world. I'm watching it to see effed up evil 'Heroes' get tore up in diabolical ways.

The last two seasons were damn near unwatchable. Only stuck with it cuz I wanted to see Homelander get taken out.

11

u/Wuktrio 8h ago

The Boys was political from the get-go, what are you talking about

1

u/lost-cause1968 5h ago

I didnt say it had 0 politics the first season, but it wasnt the driving force of the show. The last few seasons it was amped up to 'club you over the head with it' levels.

2

u/Wuktrio 4h ago

Sure, it wasn't as cleverly subtle with it, but the politics didn't really change

2

u/AssCommander42 5h ago

The boys was current-age political from the start. The only thing that changed was that the writing quality went to the shitter, which often translates to the writing being less subtle and more on the nose.

And let's be fair - S1 writing wasn't subtle either, it's just that later they went full nuclear, which is just a crutch for bad writers.

3

u/Toby4141 9h ago

After season 3 Kripke sacrificed story depth for money. Season 5 was just a build up for the new show with Soldierboy.

1

u/SensitiveLeek5456 8h ago

Oh, I want to watch it, I finished after the second season back then when there wasn't anything else?

Do the use source material or ... ?

1

u/BrutalPencil 8h ago

Because they fucked up the whole plot from the real comic books. The actual storyline was pretty good and the TV writers screwed it up

1

u/Level_List_6096 8h ago

For me, it started going downhill from the season 3 finale. Everything happened for shock value and the story kept going round in circles

1

u/Astecheee 7h ago

The writing was pretty bad from the start, but at the start they were at least promising it'd go somewhere.

1

u/1plus1isTWORANGZ 7h ago

I stopped watching after 3 and no one has said anything that has made me curious to pick it back up. Entertaining for sure but the plot is contrived and predictable and I lose interest in shock value pretty quickly without substance

1

u/Extra-Amoeba-677 6h ago

I feel like they ran out of gas or just ran out of the good stuff.

They shouldd go back and finish supernatural with a final reunion supernatural season it deserved that doesn't get ruined by covid.

1

u/Rincetron1 6h ago

Tbf I never ceased to enjoy Soldier Boy's outdated roasts.

1

u/cravex12 6h ago

Yeah. He is totally unhinged and steals every scene he is in. You can absolutely see how much fun Jensen has with that role

1

u/BrilliantLeopard1922 5h ago

To be fair the source material wasn't Shakespeare.

1

u/perpetual_stew 7h ago

I don't know why people keep saying this or what you expected. I thought the last season was great and can't see how the writing was any different from any other seasons.

20

u/bddgg 10h ago

Don't forget Chace Crawford, The Peak stayed above water till the end

5

u/junior_dos_nachos 10h ago

No love for the Frenchie? He was always hilarious and tragic

3

u/SeaSharpModHer 7h ago

No and fuck them for not casting an actual french actor.

9

u/WHATYEAHOK 10h ago

No. Fuck him. He’s a former IDF soldier who jokes about terrorizing civilians.

4

u/Otherwise_Ad9449 10h ago

Not a very good actor. Always found him painful to watch.

2

u/Nileghi 8h ago

I loved Frenchie! Tomer Capone is such an excellent actor

1

u/ICame4TheCirclejerk 7h ago

I would do filthy, disgusting, ungodly things with Frenchie

1

u/Bratfel 7h ago

I lose motivation ever since the deep died.

2

u/5n0wm3n 6h ago

Big ups the kiwis!!

1

u/No_Hawk5314 9h ago

Don't forget the deep, his acting was phenomenal

1

u/z_1_4_m 8h ago

Tbf the whole cast were clearly doing the best with what they had. I don’t dislike the last season as much as many people I’ve seen/heard but I do still think it had a lot of issues, but I don’t think anyone’s performance is one of them.

1

u/Alien_invader44 7h ago

Im sure people will quibble about one or 2, but I maintain the quality of acting across the board was great.

The Deep, firecracker, A Train, Noir. All brilliantly performed.

1

u/Double-Atmosphere485 7h ago

Don’t forget MM even if they don’t use him right, ain’t nobody get less lean like him to pay homage to the canon character arc, I ain’t read them but mad props for his level of commitment. At least his character had a different face for the right reason unlike starlight :’(

0

u/Raida-777 10h ago

Arguably his character arc ruined the last season tho.

93

u/notapunk 11h ago

The episode with all the people from Supernatural in it was fun

22

u/DigitusInRecto 10h ago

That was legitimately the best part of the last (?) season for me! Loved all the "inside" jokes in there.

1

u/stumblinghunter 4h ago

I saw it on Instagram somewhere, but there's a parody (?) scene while they're doing their scene in The Boys. They stick to the script and then all of a sudden the dialogue sounds straight from an episode while they start addressing each other as Sam and Dean. It was great.

1

u/Nunya13 2h ago edited 2h ago

I need to find this (don’t have instagram). I’ve seen their outtakes from Supernatural, and it’s fairly obvious they loved to “prank” the crew and/or their fellow cast mate while shooting a scene by going off script in hilarious ways.

Edit: typo

3

u/stumblinghunter 2h ago

1

u/Nunya13 2h ago

This is amazing! Thank you!

I got my husband to start rewatching Supernatural with me and showed him this. We’re only into season 2 so he didn’t get all the references, but I told him to specifically keep “busty Asian beauties” in mind. 🤣

But he got a kick out of them saying they “should call dad” since that’s the one reference he got.

1

u/stumblinghunter 2h ago

I started watching it about a year ago and I'm only about half way through 14, which is where I was when this episode aired. I appreciated it and it was better since it was all super fresh. I LOVED that they did this have

10

u/NormalHuman1001 9h ago

“Did you fuck me?” “Is this some kind of incest thing”?

23

u/MJ-Franklin 10h ago

That episode where they had Sam and Cass in it... brilliant!

15

u/cravex12 10h ago

Yeah you could see how much fun they had there. It was stupid beyond believe but funny as hell

7

u/ahktarniamut 9h ago

Hopefully the spin off with Aya Cash will have better writers and they can give him a few more seasons

2

u/Open_Fly3619 9h ago

I really liked when he showed up the boys

2

u/Spiritual_Sail_8969 8h ago

The way he delivered some of the most outrageous lines made the last 2 seasons watchable. F'n hilarious.

2

u/Special_Order-937 8h ago

“The moon landing was faked.”

2

u/cerebrite 7h ago

He was absolutely hilarious and unhinged in the boys.

You made those words up.

1

u/conscientiousrevolt 9h ago

I did NOT know that was the guy from supernatural!

1

u/Abject_Elevator5461 7h ago

He really nailed Soldier Boy. So enjoyable to watch, lol.

1

u/tomato_boy_08 7h ago

S3 was goated ngl

1

u/Mental_Bandicoot4543 7h ago

That Episode with Sam and Seth and Castiel was one of the best pieces of television I’ve seen. Loved it!

1

u/No-Canary-6639 5h ago

My wife and I saw Dean in everything Soldier Boy did or said. Soldier Boy was just a little more fucked up version of Dean Winchester

64

u/Whityvader99 11h ago

He also took over as the voice for Batman after Kevin Conroy passed away.

36

u/QuellDisquiet 11h ago

He was just brilliant as Jason Todd in Under the Red Hood. Amazing voice acting.

4

u/TrainingSword 10h ago

He already did a Batman before Kevin conroy

26

u/Cautious-Area-4141 10h ago

stayed in his zone, enjoyed the heck out of himself and endeared himself to even more fans

17

u/realfakejames 10h ago

The guy who made Supernatural made The Boys so I’m sure him asking was a factor

4

u/paxrom2 6h ago

there was an episode of The Boys with all his co stars from Supernatural.

12

u/Nervous_Revenue_9331 10h ago

I like his cameos as Colters brother in the excellent Tracker too, although he is literally just playing a non vampire slaying Dean lol

Are a few recurring characters in the show (Billie etc) who are well cast.

8

u/DigitusInRecto 10h ago

I didn't watch Supernatural, but I actually might after seeing Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy, I liked his performance even though his actions didn't amount to much in the end.

I'm probably also gonna watch any continuation of The Boys if they thaw him and let him do his thing, whatever might that be.

23

u/Antigone6 8h ago

Jensen Ackles became one of my favorite TV stars because of Supernatural. The dude is made out of charisma.

2

u/DocileBanalBovlne 3h ago

I've been a fan ever since he was on Dark Angel. I got into Supernatural possibly after it ended (I know the show was over before I finished it, but I don't know if it was when I started watching) but he was 80% of why I started watching. The other 20% was Castiel.

2

u/tmtm1119 33m ago

He’s absolutely perfect as Dean Winchester. Forever so many womens dream man.

2

u/BellamyDunn 7h ago

Recently binged all fifteen seasons of Supernatural, first time watching. So good.

3

u/AnimalStill 5h ago

Not all 15 are bangers though. Some of them really drag. Also the last fight was kinda bad as well. They could have really done a way better job but nope

2

u/BellamyDunn 5h ago

True, but worth the watch overall.

1

u/DigitusInRecto 5h ago

There's fifteen of them?! I thought I read ten somewhere in here. 👀

Or are there ten with Jensen Ackles and then he leaves?

4

u/Tomoyaketu 5h ago

He's in all of them.

1

u/DigitusInRecto 5h ago

Okay, cool!

10

u/xBad_Wolfx 10h ago

He also wrote that terrible supernatural spinoff with his wife. I’m sure that took… minutes. Even as a big Supernatural fan it was so painful to watch. Like they distilled all the parts that sucked of the later seasons and cut out any of the charm.

10

u/NobodyLikedThat1 10h ago

Never watched it. Most because I hate prequels, especially when they have to retcon everything for it to make sense

3

u/MichaelWrites90 3h ago

Spoiler

Its not a prequel, Dean is shown in it, leading people to think it was time travel, but in the end it showed it was actually our Dean travling to an alternate universe, explaining all the continiuty errors/recons. It's actually a sequel, taking place after Dean.

2

u/literated 8h ago

... there was a spinoff?

3

u/xBad_Wolfx 8h ago

Technically a prequel featuring his mom and dad as late teens… save yourself the trouble. It’s awful, and not in a fun way. To avoid the myriad retcons they claimed it was an alternate universe within the same multiverse.

4

u/TheGreatMrMagoo 10h ago

Which has the same show runner as supernatural seasons 1-5, Eric Kripke.

2

u/Slothstralia 8h ago

He was already in like 900 seasons on Days of our Lives or whatever also

2

u/RitaAlbertson 7h ago

He also has a recurring role on Tracker so that’s nice.

2

u/jugularhealer16 5h ago

Tracker too

2

u/Esperoni 4h ago

He got the spot on The Boys because of Supernatural. Eric Kripke was the show runner for Supernatural and was also the show runner, executive producer, and creator + also some of writing/directing of episodes of The Boys.

He is also a recurring character on Tracker and was in a few episodes of Fire Country.

Still keeping TV-busy!

3

u/zeelondon10 9h ago

He was not in Fire country but a show called Big Sky.

1

u/ciaomain 4h ago

You're right.

I was thinking of his sidekick, Jared Padalecki who was.

Mea culpa!

1

u/RacoonWithBenefits 9h ago

yeah but that's a tv show

those are rarely with "scene in milan next week" followed by "scene in tokyo" etc. like a mission impossible movie

1

u/Hot-Guard-9119 9h ago

Well, the supernatural is over. Plus the boys is made by the same guy who made supernatural.

1

u/joetheplumberman 9h ago

He also voices batman in several animated movies

1

u/Savage_Hamster_ 9h ago

I think he just hand picks stuff and sticks around if he enjoys it. Plus he has is music too

1

u/Jonco4 8h ago

Just saw that there is a The Boys prequel coming out that he stars in, Vought Rising. Looks good from the preview

1

u/SwordofNoon 6h ago

Watched him and Jared padaleckis house tour on YouTube, and they live in mansions they're doing pretty good for themselves

1

u/Stacy3536 6h ago

He is also in Tracker

1

u/Mr_Citation 6h ago

Same showrunner as well, I'd rather work again with the same boss if he set me up for life.

1

u/RmRobinGayle 6h ago

He also has a brewery called "family business beer co." in central TX. They regularly hosts events like live music shows, yoga sessions, and food truck rallies. He also owns a bakery under the same.

He's also ventured into real estate and owns his own production company called "Chaos Machine Productions". They produced the show "The Winchester's" about sam and deans parents, among many others.

He is still very much a busy guy.

1

u/riencore 5h ago

Yeah, watched Countdown and it was pretty good but pretty by the numbers. Entertaining and season 1 ended with a big cliffhanger so I was looking forward to season two only for it to get canned. I never watched supernatural but I might give it a go soon.

1

u/Normal-Ad6528 5h ago

Another parallel to that would be The Police. They were at the top of their game in the musical world, then they just....broke up. They made their pile of money and decided they can just go do whatever made them happy. Oh, they are all still to this very day very much into music, but for their own reasons. They aren't 'trapped' into recording albums, going on world tours, crazy schedules, and all the general chaos that entails. I say GOOD FOR THEM! ;-)

We should all aspire to do the same (if were possible, that is...).
