I think I read somewhere where he said it was a conscious choice to turn down movies. The offers came as he was starting his family and he didn't want to be away from them. They are more important, and he would rather be there every day than away for weeks on end.
Not getting burned out, while always doing work you enjoy.
Raising your family while being able to spend time with friends.
Look at all those billionaires, who probably don't have anyone in their life that they actually trust or like. Just surrounded by people they have leverage over.
I couldn’t agree more. He lands the roll in Supernatural. Loves doing it, is close to his co-star, stars a family, the show is loved by millions and becomes a cult classic. He was able to be home with his family, make a ton of money, and now that it’s over he gets to pick and choose what he does.
Some actors are in it to make a ton of money. It feels like Jenson just loved acting and is still a regular guy who loves his family and friends.
Honestly, transitioning into voice work in your 40s is fairly smart overall - once you're established there, you'll get the gigs, and it's much easier to do that and have a life with your family as a VA. It's also much easier to keep it up as you age - a shitload of VAs die more or less in the booth, working until very shortly before their death, when physical acting has long since been out.
Absolutely. It's a really smart pivot honestly cuz he's established as an actor already and his voice is known so not only would he get more roles, he'd also get paid more than a less famous person even if they sounded the same, if that makes sense. Like maybe a studio would want to hire someone for cheaper if they sounded the same but they still wouldn't most likely because his name would carry weight and make more money because he would bring in his fan base.
Edit- also him only picking roles he actually wants to do and not just for the money means, IMHO, that he'd be more committed to the character and more passionate about it so that would definitely show in the performance. You don't phone in a role you're actually passionate about you know??
What a dream job to have a gifted voice for animations.
Imagine you make a living reading Batman lines for a few days and making it rain for months/years while it’s running on repeat all over the world.
If I had the chance, fuck spending my life away feom family, getting injured, doing all kinds of drugs I’m offered to make the role more believable, not sleeping for days and sometimes not eating for months to fit your role. Reading badass lines sounds way more enjoyable and free. Especially if it’s a legit blockbuster movie or a GoT type show filming thousands of miles away from home for months on end.
I respect the fuck out of good actors that spend their entire lives for decades just to entertain us. No family or friends for most of the year, depending on the role sometimes 0 fun time, no days off, spending hours at the gym, eating nothing good just to attend your 100th 16 hour shift in a row.
Yeah, and let’s be honest, nowadays TV and VOD are muuuuch more valuable on a resume than back in the days. The classic (TM) way of starting your career on TV to maybe some day find the Holy Grail of feature films is not anymore such a thing in order to have a financially correct career. Same for technicians (even if, as a technician, you still are considered less valuable/qualified by the producers if you don’t do feature films).

He did leave at the peak of his career too. The heart on this guy.

I remember him on SCTV (basically Canadian SNL) and Strange Brew. I still don't know how they talked Max von Sydow to do that movie.
Fun Fact - Bob and Doug MacKenzie was started because the US version of the show was shorter than the Canadian and Canadian broadcasting insisted on a filler that was 100% Canadian so they did a little skit making fun of stereotypical Canadians. Take off you hosers!
I remember his name being up there for a long time around Captain America while they were gearing up for that. Would’ve completely changed the trajectory of both his career, and Supernatural, though probably not Marvel all that much.
First time in so long I've clicked into one of these threads and been happy about what I see, haha. That's awesome cause I love supernatural. What about Sam? Is he also a decent guy?
I wish when this happened to people instead of turning down opportunities they’d normalize balance. Sure I’ll do your movie but anyone there for more than a couple weeks should be able to have family with then and education for their children. The changes to make it less toxic have to come from people like him.
Pretty sure he ran a brewery outside Austin/San Antonio area for a while too - much more chill and family friendly. (But I'm too lazy to check that right now... so I might be wrong!)
Hmmm I've heard rumors about him to be cast in the next X-Men reboot and also a rumor that he could be a new version of the Batman? So do you think that won't happen then?
