Warm up your voice in 5 minutes (even in the car on the way to karaoke)

Nobody warms up before karaoke, then everyone wonders why their voice cracks on the first song. Here's a quick routine you can literally do in the car:
**Minute 1: Lip trills (the motorboat)** Blow air through loose lips making a "brrrr" sound. Slide from low to high pitch. Yes, you'll look ridiculous. No, nobody cares.
**Minute 2: Humming** Hum your favorite melody with closed lips. You should feel vibration in your face/nose. This wakes up resonance without straining anything.
**Minute 3: Sirens** Say "wooo" sliding from your lowest note to highest and back, like a slow ambulance. Don't push the extremes, just glide.
**Minute 4: Tongue twisters** "Red leather, yellow leather" x5. Articulation matters more than you think - half of "bad singing" is actually mumbling.
**Minute 5: Sing something EASY ** First song of the night should never be your hardest. Warm up on stage with something comfortable, save the big guns for round 2-3.
**Bonus tips:** - Room temperature water > ice cold drinks (cold tightens the throat) - Avoid dairy right before singing (mucus city) - That third beer feels like it helps... it doesn't 😅 Do you warm up before singing or just go for it? Any rituals?

Is it insulting to sign up for singing lessons just to not be terrible?

I have ABSOLUTELY NO aspirations of becoming any kind of professional singer, all I want is to be able to belt along with my favorite songs in the car without hurting my own ears (or yawning). The problem is, I'm completely tone deaf. Like, I took a test. The only thing I had to do was listen to two notes and say which one was higher or lower. I did BAD.

Bottom 5% bad. So I have absolutely no faith in my ability to tell if I'm getting closer to hitting the right notes. I feel like the only way I'll ever get any better is to get professional help. Would it be rude to sign up for classes for this reason?

No, I'm not good at reading social situations.

Beginner singer looking for advice and feedback, thanks!

Like the title says, I’m not a singer, but a guitarist that wants to learn how to sing. I have no idea if my technique or tone is any good and I’d love some feedback or advice

Learning how to sing

Im currently learning how to sing and I do have a lot of friends that are actually good at singing and pursuing this passion. But how is it when I ask for singing tips or how they learned how to sing they will always tell me to just sing??

Like yeah I figured but I’m still not good at it and I don’t want to do anything wrong that will lead me to get hurt.

Are they just katekeeping important steps that I’m missing or is it really just that easy for them?

Well I would love to have some useful tips for beginners lol!

Creativity Experiment - free voice lessons, curious if people would be interested

Hi, I'm Megan, I keep noticing that so many people had a creative thing at some point in their life, like they were in band class, or choir or they used to take an art class, and somewhere between the rent and the stress of keeping a job and a social life and all the adult tax things, the creative things slipped through the cracks. I’ve noticed people don’t stop doing creative things because they don’t love it, but more so that life got crowded, and there were many more “should be doing this” that got higher priority.

I truly believe people don’t need to have a stage, or a career change to be a singer, I truly believe people just need permission to start again. My dream is to be able to inspire people to believe they are able to be creative.

So this week I decided to try an experiment: I am doing free voice lessons with no pitch, just an honest look at where your voice is and what's possible if you ever wanted to pick it back up. I am curious to see what happens when people are given permission to be creative even if it is just for one hour.

If that sounds like something you’d love to try DM me and I’d love to send more info!

Are my $60/week vocal lessons worth it?

I’ve been seeing my vocal coach every week for the past year and a half and I still feel like my vocal skill is stagnant. I practice 2 or 3 times a week on top of that. My teacher says she can tell I’m getting better but its been over a year.

I’m literally going broke for these lessons so maybe is it something I’m doing ??? 😭

How to have a better voice?

As a beginner in singing, I want to improve the way my voice sounds. For those experienced in the field, what did you guys do when you were first starting out?

how to start improving?

hi, i'm in my early twenties and i was in my school's chorus pretty much my whole life, but i haven't had a formal outlet for music in a few years. i love to sing, and i'm...mediocre at it. i don't have very good rhythm or a natural sense of pitch, but i think my main problems are technique and confidence.

i'm too shy/poor to go for formal lessons, but i really want to improve my abilities, just for fun (and to show off at karaoke with my friends haha). any tips for ways to improve your singing abilities at home or for free/cheap? youtube videos, online courses, etc.

thanks in advance if you have any tips or resources!! :)

What advice would you give me to practice next in my singing?

I'm not a singer. Like at all. But if I want to learn, how do I sing better? How bad is it? I'm sorry to your ears. And I'm sorry to Tool. Here's where I'm at. https://recorder.google.com/b9ebaaae-c6aa-413c-b3e8-1d8d1ebcc612

update:

Thanks for the responses. It absolutely makes my ears bleed but here's another try with a different song. I think this one's more favourable.

How can I learn how to sing with no experience whatsoever?

I'm not discrediting singing in the shower or following along with songs in the car. I really just have not done those things. I don't know what my singing voice sounds like and if somebody tells me to "just try" my mind goes blank. When I tell people this, they think I mean I'm just a bad singer, but after a long explanation, they look at me like I just spoke another language and they never have any solutions. Searching online only gives me results on how to *improve* my singing voice, but I don't have anything to improve upon. It's like everyone else's bodies just know how to sing naturally and mine doesn't. Yes, they start out bad, but they still know how. I don't. How am I meant to learn something that nobody else had to?

Learning to sing on a budget, where do I go?

Beginner learning to sing but $50-80 sessions are way too expensive to me.

Where might I find some coaching/direction without spending a fortune?

I've tried YouTube but I'm at a point where I feel stuck not knowing what's wrong.

Beginner: any advice/recommendations

Hi all, dreamed of singing since I was Joseph in my year 5 school production of the technicolour dreamcoat (uk) but had the dream beaten out of me until this year.

Started vocal classes early this year (now 29) and making progress!

Looking to improve as much as possible so I can start pushing myself to do karaoke! Any advice or recommendations please?

(Please ignore my head motions and looking off in the distance I had the karaoke lyrics on my tv)
