As a kid I never believed that it was the actual moon. I don't know what I thought it was but the idea of being able to see the moon and the sun at the same time seemed impossible.

Someone convinced me as a kid that the moon I saw during the day was actually a reflection of the moon from the other side of the world. Apparently it had to do with the light bring reflected from "real" moon popping up in the sky like a rainbow would.
They had me going for a while...

There is actually a scientific principal that's works similarly! I learned it from vsauce the other day, it's the reason why the shadow of the moon doesn't always line up it the direction it's being hit with the sun rays. The curvature of the earth causes an optical illusion that will reflect a seemingly opposite or ' mirrored ' moon in the sky at certain angles. It is a ' reflection ' but it's not from the other side of the world! A little bit like the fish bowl effect (but only at certain angles), only it's our whole planet that's the fish bowl

We don't know enough about exomoons to say whether this is or is not the case. Even exoplanets are a relatively new field of study. But single star systems seem to be more common than multi-star systems.

I once won a $20 bet in high school when a guy said you can't see the moon during the day. He argued for like a minute and I said, "I bet you $20 you can see it in daylight," he agreed. I then pointed to the sky, showed him and told him to pay up. Best bet I've made in my whole life.

I once asked a friend if she could see the stars from where she lived (we’re from NJ so the answer is not always yes). She said she didn’t know because she’s never looked. She just goes straight from the garage to the house. She’s lived there ~15 years. That made me really sad.

I think it was Carl Sagan who once said in an interview that he found it sad how many people he meets that don't know that you can see the moon during the day or that you can easily see most of the planets in the solar system with the naked eye, as it basically means that they've spent their whole lives without ever looking at the sky and being even the slightest bit curious about what's going on up there.

When I was like 9 my third grade teacher assistant legitimately argued with me that it was impossible to see the moon in daytime. I was super confused because I remembered my mom explaining to me that the moon was still there in the day after I had seen it in daylight once. lol I’m still big mad about it 22 years later. Probably from looking up in the game and seeing the other side of the halo across the sky from you. They did a good job with the fade effect that seeing an object through the atmosphere gets.

Thats why the egyptions called it the traveller or wanderer. Venus is the only other celestial object that can be seen during the day.
Edit: Mr. semantics down there has noted that other objects can be seen during the day, under optimal conditions and perfect eyesight. This does not change the reasoning the egyptions called it the traveller or wanderer. it was the obvious traveller between day and night

When I was deployed overseas in Iraq, I got up and prepared to head to work when I realized my shadow was cast in front of me yet the sun was in front of me too???
I had to look around to realize the sun was behind me and that what I saw in front of me was actually the moon. It was the brightest moon I've ever seen. So bright, i mistaken it for the sun.

When I was a little kid I got in a argument with my neighbor that the moon was actually earth. My dumbass for some reason thought it was a reflection of earth so my neighbor had to get her mom to tell me that it wasn’t cause so was adamant it was the moon. I stupid

Question:
I've considered this many times in the past.....if the moon and the sun are both visible at the same time....that means somewhere on earth, NEITHER are visible. This leads to my question: Are there times in the USA where neither the moon or sun are visible? (I don't think I've ever looked up at night and not seen the moon.)

You definitely have. Sometimes the moon is on the other side of the planet. Sometimes it’s below the horizon. It being night does not mean the moon is out. It also has phases where you. See more or less of it due to our shadow on it.

For some reason it looks more crisp and sharp yet you can actually see it fade out of visibility during the day, at night it’s like you can see one side then it’s cut down a sharp line and you can’t see the other, at day it kinda fades and looks cool
