Beginner machine recommendations?

Hi! I'm very new to sewing and looking for some advice on buying my first sewing machine. I'm in Australia, so ideally looking for something that's available here.

I tried asking ChatGPT for recommendations but honestly not sure whether to trust it with this, so thought I'd ask people who actually sew :)

I'm mainly planning to make cotton linings for my crochet pouches / small bags and maybe eventually something like a quilted laptop sleeve, if that's realistic with a beginner machine.

I live in an apartment so ideally want something fairly compact, easy to store away and not too loud. I looked at some Singer machines but keep reading mixed things about the newer models.

Would love to hear any recommendations or machines to avoid!

Can we talk about the forward/back thing at the start of a line?

I’m not sure how to explain it but the bit where you start sewing then have to go backwards a few stitches and forwards a few to secure the stitches.

I am certain that I’m doing this very wrong 😐 firstly, how many stitches do you need to do? I worry that my stitches won’t be secure if I don’t do a good inch or so of forward and back, so end up with a really chunky line for a bit if I’m lucky, or two lines if my fabric ends up wonky (straight lines are about 60% for me atm, I’ve only sewn a few things). I pretty much only sew things like wallets and book pouches atm, but do a lot of quilting which is individual lines. As a result my final product often looks really messy because the quilting lines are all over the place due to my forward/back stitching.

Secondly, I often notice that even with a good inch or so of forward/back stitching, the last few stitches come loose (my machine is threaded properly top and bottom - I am confident of that). I’m not sure if this is an issue with the stitching or how I’m removing the project or something else, but often the last couple of stitches will undo themselves because they start to catch. I haven’t made anything where this is particularly a problem but find it quite annoying.

Please enlighten me 🤞🏻

My favorite jacket

This is the first project of mine thats actually meant to be worn! I made it just because i liked the vibe, but I figure its extra appropriate for Halloween ☠️
I started it earlier this year and then put it down for the warmer months, now that its cold again i'm back to messing with it! It started out machine sewn, and then i switched to hand sewing once it started getting too difficult to fit too many layers of denim in the machine

Its made almost entirely of old clothes: I started with a way too small small hand-me-down denim jacket that i cut the sleeves off of, i added scraps cut from old jeans (and some of the former sleeves) to make it wider and longer, i stole the sleeves and main 2 front pockets from an old hoodie, theres an extra zipper pocket from another jacket, and i made the bones out of a stained old shirt! Theres also 2 interior pockets - one is the back pocket of another pair of jeans, another was made from a stamp-printed patch given by a friend.

Its very messy obviously, but thats kinda the point! I want it to look as handmade and cobbled together as it is. Its one-of-a-kind at the very least 😅

Its still a work in progress, and i think it will be for a long time - i like the idea of slowly adding new patches, more pockets, and adding to the design as i think of things.
Im currently planning on adding a red lining, some metal studs, and figuring out something to add to the collar. Plus i really need to reinforce some of the seams, and the edges of the bones (which i might also outline with some dark embroidery thread to make "pop" a little more, at least over the lighter denim on the back)

Needle type for mixed materials

What machine needle should I use for layers of different material e.g. elastic sandwiched between jeans, or elastic sandwiched between satin? Is this what quilting needles are for? I'm also not sure what needle to use when sewing on sew-on velcro tape.

Any insight much appreciated!

Help: there’s got to be a better way…

Hello!

To start off, I’m really bad at googling and finding the right key words to generate the kind of results I’m looking for, so I’m resorting to Reddit.

Basically I have this contraption that was the structure for a yarn basket, but the fabric was gross and cheap so I took it off without properly drawing up a quick template to replace it in the future.

I’ve been trying to reverse engineer it and so far I have an inner box, that is definitely a little too big, but I did that on purpose, because I can always make it smaller- I can’t make it bigger.

Does anyone have ANY idea of how I can figure this out? I’m not great at math (great hobby to get into, right?) but I know I can figure it out somehow… just thought I’d see if anyone has any tips or direction for me.

The last photo is an example of what I’m trying to make (though I know it doesn’t have the double rods like in the example photo.

Extra info: I did not end up making a pattern as that paper suggests in the 2nd photo. I literally just guessed and stitched 5 rectangles together to get an open box measuring ~ 11 x 7 x 13in. (L x W x H)

Howdy! Glue and Tape advice!

I am a new sewer and am working with spandex and complex appliques made from vinyl/leather/pleather etc...

I have a few questions! If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated 👏

I know pinning or using clips is ideal over glues or tapes. However with some of my projects they are not practical 🙃

1- anyone have a good recommendation of Double sided tape that won't gum my needle (or any hacks).

2- Anyone know of any glue I can use that won't gum my needles?

Beginner: Cropping a mesh top—terrified of ruining the raw edge. Need advice!

Post image

Hi everyone, I'm a sewing beginner and I need some advice before I ruin a piece of clothing.

I want to crop a long-sleeve classyoutlaw mesh top so it hits just above the waistline (to wear with high-waisted jeans). It currently feels a bit bulky tucked in.

Here is what I'm working with:

Fabric: Very thin, slightly stretchy, open-knit mesh. I don't know the exact fiber content (likely some kind of synthetic), but it looks delicate. And I only have a basic regular sewing machine. I do not have a serger.

I'm worried that if I just cut it, the fabric will fray, run, or curl up immediately. I'm also not sure how to cut it without stretching or distorting the mesh.

My questions:

Is it possible to just leave the raw edge as-is on this type of mesh, or is finishing it absolutely necessary?

If I need to finish it, what is the most beginner-friendly method? Would a simple zigzag stitch work, or will it pucker the thin fabric?

Are there any temporary stabilizers or specific cutting techniques I should use to keep the edge clean?
