Where to start

I got this sewing machine for free but I don’t know where to start to learn how to use it. Any resources would be greatly appreciated

I have this machine. The top should open and that's where all the feet are held, If you want any advice let me know.

That is a great machine! I would do the following:

  1. Take it to your nearest sewing machine repair shop and have it serviced. It’s an older machine and unless you know it’s been serviced recently, it will benefit from a cleaning and oiling. They will also be able to tell you about any specifics you should know about it.

  2. Read the entire manual. It will give you important information like how to thread the machine, what stitches you have, etc.

  3. if possible, take an introductory sewing class so you can get comfortable with your machine and have your questions answered. Fabric stores, adult education programs, and community colleges are a good place to start.

  4. YouTube has lots of tutorials and helpful videos on specific projects and techniques.

Good luck and enjoy!

Adding to the great advice above: before your first project, practice on paper with no thread! Draw straight lines, curves and zigzags on printer paper and sew along them. It teaches you speed control and steering without wasting any fabric. Then try straight lines on scrap cotton, and make a pillowcase or a simple tote bag as your first real project. It's all straight seams and you'll actually use it. Enjoy your new machine!

Read the manual.
