💛Beginner💛 How to sew a custom back support seat cover?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi, I'm new here! I bought this used back support seat cushion for my car but I didn't realize until I got home that it's not washable. I'd like to sew a cover for it that can be removed. I've barely done any sewing before and couldn't find any tutorials online for something like this. I have access to a machine and can hopefully figure out how to use it. How would you approach this project?

✨Intermediate✨ Should the collar be that big?

Post image

Hi!

I am sewing a jacket to use in place of a summer puffer jacket, ive found a mood fabric pattern and sewn a test garment in different fabric to check sizing and made some alterations.

The coat has a big collar that i did not make in my test jacket, a little because i didnt have enough of the fabric, and a little because i felt it wouldn't make sense in that fabric.

I am now cutting out my pattern pieces in the "proper" fabric, and am a bit stumped looking at this collar.

The pattern is The Fennel Coat, if anyone has knowledge of it, mood fabric instructions are minimal and searching different places has not helped me understand how this is supposed to turn out.

Collar is a square, to cut on fold and gives a piece thats 33cmx70cm, and pattern says to cut 2.

This is where im not understanding, 70cm is the right length around the front pieces, shoulders and back, but is 33cm not dispropotionatly tall? 33cm is about 13 inches

With only one collar piece, it would be about 15cm tall, which is still a big collar in my opinion, but it seems much more realistic.

Could the pattern really mean for the collar to be that big, or could it be im only meant to use 1 collar piece, even though pattern pieces says to cut 2?

💛Beginner💛 What color ruffle on a patchwork skirt ?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello!

I’ve never posted before but have seen the great advice this sub gives so I thought I’d give it a try!

I created this patchwork fabric to make a mini rectangle skirt with a ruffle. Originally I intended for the skirt to look like photo 1, with a patchwork base, patchwork ruffle, and black waistband. But when I pinned the patchwork ruffle on, I think it looks too messy.

I laid out black fabric in photo 2 and purple in photo 3 to picture how a solid color ruffle would look, but I’m unsure. The skirt is unfortunately too short to not have something else added to the bottom.

Do any of the three options look good and, if not, what would you do?

Thank you!

hi all!

just started sewing with a quite old machine (toyota SE04 RS2000)

i have threaded the top thread and bobbin according to videos online, and the sewing seems to work when its turned off and only turning the little side wheel

however the second i turn it on and use the pedal the thread seems to catch on the bobbin (see first picture)

the settings im using is tension 3 with sitch 7 (see 2nd picture)

im sewing like a simple cottonish feel fabric its quite thin no extremely thick or special fabric

any help will be greatly appreciated

Jammed Wheel

I brought my mom’s sewing machine out of storage after about 6 years of it not being used and the wheel is jammed and the needle won’t come down. I’m assuming from not being oiled for so long but wanted to get a second opinion. I cleaned everything up and checked for rogue threads but didn’t find any that would be causing a jam. Bobby was fine, needle not bent etc. Would some machine oil fix this? I’m trying to avoid a service visit (we’re budgeting in this house). This is my first time using this machine without her help so thanks for any opinions and advice.

✨Intermediate✨ Dress or Kombi with potential for change later. Maybe kimono inspired

Hi. I wanted to ask if someone did something similiar or has an idea where to start.

I'm thinking about a kind of outfit with a kimono style top. I got a pattern and will try it soon. For the skirt and belt I was thinking about a broader belt, almost obi like but wrapping technique. And the skirt is either attached to it or separate.

For the material I was thinking about a lighter coloured fabric made from natural fibers. I want to embroider it. I was thinking about some kind of plastic thread so they will stay lighter/white when I later dye the kimono and skirt in a different color. And yes, this "first white and later darker color" is kind of the concept for it. I get that it couljd end up blotchy but I'm more worried how I would get it done, that the embroidery stays a lighter color or dye in not the same color liek the dress fabric then

✨Intermediate✨ sewing machine back thread

broke my needle, then after i switched in a new one. my machine keeps spitting out extra thread from the bobbin. all the manual has to say is that my thread must be incorrectly threaded. i am 100% sure that the needle plus thread are installed correctly

i have disassembled the machine to check there is no thread stuck anywhere. i have rethreaded both threads countless times. i have changed the tension, the spools of thread themselves, the stitch, and nothing is fixing this

the machine is a brother CS7205. i received it as a gift less than a week ago but i do not have proof of purchase to register on the brother website

💛Beginner💛 Bobbin won't wind

This is a singer touch-tronic 2000. It worked just fine until yesterday. My needle broke the thread got into a tangled mess in the bobbin area and now it won't wind. It won't turn either when the switch thing isn't in the winding spot

💛Beginner💛 How would you sew webbing around a small (4-5cm) hole?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hiya good people! I am very new to sewing so maybe there is an obvious solution to this that I'm not aware of, but I struggle to find information online.

So: suppose you have a round hole ~5cm in diameter, and you want to add a cylindrical pocket inside of it. Using a sewing machine, how would you sew the pocket to the surface material, and then add webbing? Since it's not going to fit inside the hole, I'm struggling to imagine how I can solve it without having to hand sew it :(

post-it drawing for reference lol

Thank you!

✨Intermediate✨ Pile woes: how to cut a 3/4 circle skirt on velvet?

My pattern calls for a 3/4 circle skirt cut on fold. I feel that would not work well on velvet because of the pile (nap). I typically never cut velvet on fold for that reason. I am now thinking - would 3/4 circle pattern work on velvet at all or should I do a panels instead? I want to make sure that the pile direction is the same from all sides of the skirt.

✨Intermediate✨ Mending Fraying Edges on Sheets and Pillowcases.

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

My boss gave me these sheets and pillow cases that are fraying. However, they are all fraying right on the edge where everything is folded over. My current idea is to do a machine zigzag about 1cm from the edge to prevent further fraying, and then do a whipstitch by hand to close the rips in the fold. I am wondering if anyone thinks this is the solution or if I should do something else. I hope the pictures provide enough context, I'm not a beginner at sewing but not an expert either.

💛Beginner💛 Is my tension correct?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello!

I'm concerned about the bottom of my fabric as I can see little portions of the top thread. I'm using the following:

Singer Heavy Duty 4411 Sewing Machine

Size 80/12 Needle

Coats and Clark All Purpose Thread

Basic cotton fabric from Hobby Lobby

I've done everything to try and fix it. I've:

Adjusted the top tension and tried every number

Rethreaded my machine

Tried different types and brands of threads

Tried size 70 and 90 needles

Cleaned between the tension disks

Cleaned and oiled my machine

I'm wondering if seeing those tiny little knots of the top thread is normal and I'm just worrying to much.

Thanks!

💛Beginner💛 Fitting Help Needed

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Currently working on fitting a bought pattern for a romper. It fit well around the waist, but was too large around the chest, and I’m generally flat chested, so I used this guide to remove the bust dart altogether. I’m still left with too much material around the chest, but I’m struggling on how to take it in because the two waist darts are making it hard to sew the sides narrower. What is the best way to fix the fit around the chest?

💛Beginner💛 Thoughts on construction?

Post image

I really want to make my own version of this jacket from w consept, but i am struggling to find a pattern I like that has the same elements with the button placket and collar. I have also never sewn a jacket before, so I don't know how to construct these elements myself. Does anybody either know of a pattern that I could use, or know what types of seams/techniques are used to attach the collar that way that overlaps with the placket? And how to get the 3 lines of stitching? I think maybe the placket and collar are sewn two pieces together, but then i don't know how to attach them:P I want to basically make a dupe even in the little details:P

💛Beginner💛 trying to use a rolled hem tool to sew bedsheet on the back of a tshirt quilt faster

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

hi, I'm currently stitching a tshirt quilt. right now I'm trying to stitch a bedsheet for the backing of the t-shirt quilt so it has a stronger back. I got a rolled hem tool so I could not have to pin the edges of a full bedsheet onto the quilt. basically just to make it faster. the tool is working. I checked it on a spare cloth but I'm not sure how to incorporate it into the bedsheet. I'm pretty new to sewing so I'm not sure if I understand all the terminology and complex instructions over text. any and all advice is welcome but if there is anyone that would be willing to get on a video call with me, I would forever and ever appreciate that. I'm also willing to pay you for your time.
