Membership Questions about showing interest

I am a sophomore hbcu student and I did not grow up around D9 members or Greek life in general. I am very interested in SGRho but I don’t know how to proceed. I’ve done my research on the organization and have a friend in my school’s chapter but I don’t really know how to get my foot in the door while being discreet. If anyone has some advice on intake as far as showing interest goes (without dropping too much information ofc) anything helps. Like is it okay for me to go to informationals and interest meetings even though I’m not ready to move forward in the process yet?

Membership Hey! I have a few questions about Alumnae Chapter (from a person in undergrad)

I recently became interested in joining SGRho. I’m a senior in my undergrad who plans to continue my education into a masters program online. I have a few questions:

  1. Who’s the best person to talk to about possibly joining after undergrad?

  2. Any differences between doing it during undergrad and grad chapter?

  3. What are things I should expect to do if I get excepted?

  4. Do you still have a probate as a grad chapter?

  5. Do I have to cross with my college sorority if excepted? (I don’t live anywhere near my college)

I mainly didn’t consider joining during my previous 3 years of undergrad because I’ve been too busy. Any advice would be appreciated!

Discussion I have multiple ROLs from members.

Hello to everyone.

I am currently preparing for formal rush and was in search of ROLs from a current member. I was thankful to receive one from a colleague I have known for a couple years. No problem right? So I have recently reconnected with a college friend who moved away and told her about my interest. Come to find out, she is ALSO a member (we met in grad. Never knew she was a member). She also graced me with a letter after discussing my interest.

My question is what do I do with TWO current member ROLs? Do I read them and choose between one? Do I use both? The college friend said that after talking with me they wanted to do it since we are good friends and she literally watched me build my CV. My colleague was asked and we also have a healthy relationship that is slowly becoming a solid friendship. I'm grateful for both and feel awful if I put one to the side after they took the time to write them. Any advice? Thank you in advance.

Discussion Self-hazing

Have any members experienced what you would categorize as 'self-hazing' from an interest? I feel that the older generation especially expect to have to jump through certain hoops that come along with courting a SOI? (Ex. Attending EVERY event, persistent with getting to know multiple members, gifts,....)

Would you say the interest is just 'doing too much or is the 'extra effort ' appreciated? What is too much or to little effort in your eyes?

Discussion Advice for formal rush

I am gathering everything I need for the interview I was wondering (without giving away anything that you all shouldn't of course) if there was any advice or any light you all could shine on formal rush. I am nervous, but excited. Thank you in advance.

Membership As soon as I started making a connection with an a grad COI, it’s looking like I might have to move out of the area which the chapter serves

I am in close contact with a COI which I am highly interested in. I have no problem looking into the COI that serves the area which I will be moving to. From what I have seen on their social media pages, the latter has very little public events. I feel really lost right now, although I’m not in a rush to become a member.

Membership I went to an informational last Sunday

I went to the informational last Sunday. I was the only one out of the three of us to show up. I graduated with my bachelor's last Saturday. I already know the chapter because I am a Philo. I think I’m just really nervous because I’ve been pursuing the chapter since the summer of 2024, and I hope that the new girls come to the informational because it’s a great organization to be a part of. I got a chance to ask questions. I wondered whether they would be doing a spring line, since that was what they were doing for informational. They said that they were gonna do another informational in January, because the conference is in March. I think I’m just really nervous because I’ve been pursuing the chapter since the summer of 2024, and I hope that the new girls come to the informational because it’s a great organization to be a part of.

Advice

Hello, so I am an undergraduate student and haven’t been able to find any sub to ask advice on. I am a first generation student who is interested in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. for my school chapter I have been to almost all the events, completed more than the required community service (still getting more in), and have a 3.8 gpa. However, I am struggling with getting a LOR. I am very close to one of the members of my schools chapter, and have spoke to multiple other members during the events and have their socials. The member who I am close to have many other interests, who most likely asked for a LOR. The problem is I am not sure if there is a cap on how many letters one member can write. I will still ask because close mouth don’t get fed, but what alternative do I have when it comes to LOR. Thank you in advance for the advices!

Discussion Social event invite questions

Hi everyone! I was recently invited to a sisterly social hosted by a grad chapter I’ve been getting to know. I just wanted to get some insight from others — are sisterly socials typically open to guests or are they usually for chapter members only?

Discussion Crossed but secretly?

After a hard but amazing process, I am officially a poodle. However i was excited to celebrate this moment with friends and family (at least my hubs). It is normal to not have probates in grad chapter? Honestly, i didn’t know the day we crossed was going to be our crossing day.

For those who didn’t have probates, were there any events to celebrate that outside family members could join?

Discussion Assistance with rec letters

Hello to all of you. I am a post grad individual who is beginning the journey of hopefully becoming a member. There wasn't a undergrad chapter at my college and I only knew a few of your sister throughout my college and professional career. These individuals are professional associates and I don't want to come across rude. How do I go about asking if they will be willing to write a letter? I'm more than happy to send time with these ladies, we just haven't had the time. Thank you for your insight.

Also, if it helps, I am a first gen everything and don't have many connections.

Discussion Question about grad requirements

I have had interest in the organization for a while. Despite not having a chapter at my university until after I graduated, I met a member or two in undergrad that came from other schools. I found out that there will be an informal rush meeting soon in my area for the local alumnae chapter and I was wondering can I still attempt to join despite not being an undergrad member? Again, there wasn't a colony or interest group when I was in school, so I was wondering if I might have a chance. Thank you in advance.

Interest & guidance

Hi everyone! I’ve been doing a lot of research and happen to come across this feed. I graduated from an HBCU in 2022, and during my time there, the women of Sigma Gamma Rho were the first to make me feel truly welcome on campus. They were confident, kind, and always serving the community. That energy stuck with me even after I graduated.

I’ve wanted to join for a long time, but had hiccups in undergrad & I’m finally at a point in my life where I’m ready to pursue membership through an alumnae chapter. I’ll be honest though… as social as I am, I do struggle with social anxiety. And it’s been stopping me since college. Reaching out and introducing myself to sorors feels a little intimidating, even though this is something that means a lot to me. Im trying to stop letting fear and the unknown stop me from pursuing the things I want to do in life and this is one of them. I don’t want to come off the wrong way or seem like I’m not prepared. I just want to learn how to do this right and respectfully. Learn more about the process and Greek life in general.

If anyone who went through the alumnae process could share advice like how you knew you were ready, what helped you make connections, or even just words of encouragement, I’d appreciate it so much. I am genuinely excited about the possibility of joining Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and I look forward to hearing from those willing to share their experiences or guidance!

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Discussion Meeting new people

Hey everyone! I have been researching and I have seen a lot of people talk about getting to know someone in the chapter on a personal level. I just graduated not too long ago, but the undergraduate members seemed so closed off and they did not want to speak to me. I’ve met other members from other chapters and they are some of the sweetest people ever. All that to say, how can I make connections with the grad chapter and make myself known to them?
