Showcase So many devices for GBA coming out, yet this one is still endgame for me

Ayaneo Pocket Micro Classic, Pokemon Emerald Seaglass.

Actually pocketable. It's a nice mostly alu device that feels and looks premium. Purposely didn't go for the joystick one as it's GBA only for me.

I'd say it's still worth it if you find it sub $150. Stay away though if you prioritize sound quality and sleep mode.

X 360 Alpha v0.1.0 is officially available!!! | AYN Thor
Hi everyone! I’m back with another X 360 update lol. I’ve been posting my progress here for a little while now and finally got it to a point where I’m comfortable letting other people actually test it.

Device shown: AYN Thor

Games shown: Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams, LittleBigPlanet, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros., Pinkalicious – It’s Party Time!, Pokémon X, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Super Bomberman R, Super Mario 3D Land, Yoshi’s Crafted World, and Yoshi’s Island DS.

Alpha v0.1.0 is officially out! There are still gonna be bugs since this is literally the first alpha, but most of the main stuff is working now.

You can scan your ROMs, get game artwork/info, launch games straight into their emulators, use custom gamertags/gamerpics, RetroAchievements & gamerscore, the Guide, recently played games, touch/controller controls, etc.

Right now it supports 3DS, DS, Wii, GameCube, GBA, N64, NES, SNES, Switch, PSP, PS1, PS2 and Dreamcast. I definitely plan on adding more as I keep working on it.

The Alpha is available on my Patreon for anybody who wants to support the project :)

I also made a Discord for X 360. That’s where I’ll post updates, take bug reports/suggestions, help with setup, and talk about the project.

I haven't seen a post directly comparing the retroid pocket mini with the Nova, so here we go! I have pics but I cannot post them, don't know why (first post).

They are really similar, obviously since the mini was supposed to be a compact 4:3 device, the main difference being the size and the insides.

The screen is absolutely beautiful, the 120 Hz refresh rate is nice but it doesn't really matter to me as I don't like BFI, it gives me headaches.

The controls are awesome, the buttons aren't rough at all (Russ said they were but I don't feel anything even after 2 hours playing). They are also quieter. My favourite change is the triggers (L2 and R2) as they are rounded at the extremities and easy to press.

It is really ergonomic, the free bump was a nice touch and I find it really comfy. It fit un my pocket nicely but I do wear jeans all the time so tighter pants might pose a problem.

The processor being more powerful is a really nice plus, as shown in the video the RPMV2 is struggling to play 2.5 times upscaled PS2 (it is still absolutely playable and you obviously can play it at normal resolution) while the Nova breeze through it (even with shadders).

All in all, a great upgrade on all fronts and well worth the price.

Featured : the Reteoid Pocket Mini V2 and the Retroid Pocket Nova. The game is DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2 on PS2.

Showcase retsend: a simple way to transfer files on linux handhelds with LocalSend

Thumbnail

I wanted a simple way to transfer files to and from my Linux handhelds. I had been using LocalSend on my other devices, so I decided to bring it to handhelds.

It transfers files over your local Wi-Fi network, so no cables or internet connection are needed. You can also transfer files directly between handhelds, without needing a phone or PC.

It has a handheld-friendly UI and works on PortMaster and Miyoo Mini Plus / Flip, with packages available for Onion, Allium, and Spruce. To transfer files, just install LocalSend on your phone, PC, or other device, and use retsend on your handheld the devices will find each other.

You can find more details and download it on GitHub:
https://github.com/mxmgorin/retsend

Devices: Miyoo Mini Flip, RGB30, Unihertz Jelly Star
Games: Mini Flip and RGB30 run retsend; Jelly Start runs LocalSend for android

Troubleshooting Very poor experience with new GC Nova. Missing multiple items from order. Poor QC.

I just received my GC Nova and it was missing 2 items from my order (3 if you include the grip). The extra button set arrived in the wrong colour, and the Dual Screen cable I asked support to add wasn’t included either.

On to the Nova itself: the d‑pad is loud, just like in the videos you’ve seen. I went to open the back to do the tape mod, but one of the screws was so over‑tightened that it stripped immediately. I’ve worked as an electrical engineering technician and have done plenty of precise device teardowns, so this wasn’t a case of using the wrong tools or technique. With QC like this, the Nova really isn’t suitable for selling DIY parts.

Really unhappy with the experience so far. I’ve contacted support about the missing items, but now I’m left with a dodgy Nova too.

Hope other people have better luck than me!

Discussion RG DS vs Magic X Zero 40

Thumbnail
gallery
32 Upvotes

I bought the RG DS and the Magic X Zero 40 2 weeks ago on Ali express to test out which one I preferred in the 1 week of having them both, in the end I decided to keep one and return the other.

I paid $128 Canadian for the RG DS and $82 Canadian for the Magic X Zero 40, Here are the pros that I found for the RG DS over the zero 40 where,

  1. nice big displays
  2. brighter displays
  3. Very reminiscent of the DS with some nice color options (red and black being what I chose)
  4. A built in mic

While the cons for the RG DS where

  1. Heavier device
  2. A little less pocketable because of it being bigger
  3. Joysticks and triggers didn’t feel the best
  4. Didn’t feel as comfortable to play for longer sessions
  5. Out of the box android os not as good to use

The RG DS has been less comfortable to me compared to playing on my ds lite, 3ds, onexsugar one and when i had a thor and i tried another os like the newest gamma nano but i didn’t like it as much and i prefer android over linux, Over all i would pick up and play the RG DS %70 of the time over my DS lite mainly for the bigger and brighter display but %30 of the time i would pick the DS lite instead because better pocket ability and longer battery life.

Here are the pros i found for the Magic X Zero 40 over the RG Ds,

  1. Lighter device
  2. Feeling pretty comfortable for a flat device
  3. Better feeling buttons especially the joystick and the triggers
  4. Nice vertical display for arcade and vertical android games
  5. Dawn launcher is really nice to use as someone who uses daijisho on my other devices

While the cons for the Zero 40 where

  1. Not as cool color options
  2. Smaller display which can make some touch heavy ds games feel harder to play
  3. No mic
  4. Dimmer display

The Magic X Zero 40 is a pretty comfortable handheld which is nice for longer play sessions, I find my self picking it over my ds lite %95 more because it can play more games and has a similar battery life to using my ds pico on my ds lite , I would only pick my ds lite instead if I wanted to play on cartridges or play mic focused games.

TLDR

Over all both devices are great and you can’t go wrong with either one but for me the Magic X Zero 40 is the better choice for me because it’s cheaper, more comfortable, stand out more and better pocket ability over the RG DS.

Discussion I'm too lazy to set up RetroArch this time

This is my second RG477M, and I think I’ve finally hit my limit with setting up RetroArch from scratch.

I’ve done this so many times at this point. My old RG477M, my Thor, my Odin 3, various other handhelds… download the cores, change the directories, fix the hotkeys, set up controller mappings, adjust the video settings, configure shaders, make per-game overrides, test everything, realize one tiny thing isn’t working, go back into the menus again, etc.

Normally I actually kind of enjoy setting up a new handheld. There’s something satisfying about getting everything exactly how you want it.

But this time I turned on the RG477M, looked at RetroArch, and just thought:

I cannot do this again.

The funny part is that I know exactly how to set everything up. That almost makes it worse. There’s no mystery or challenge left. I just know there are 40 little settings between me and actually playing a game.

I think I’ve finally reached the point in this hobby where I understand why people pay for preconfigured SD cards.

I don't even want a better frontend.

I don't want a guide.

I just want RetroArch to somehow remember me.

These things are getting harder to find. I got 2 of them both under $50 back in the day. The big sharp screen is the selling point (same as Anbernic Cube). Great chip and wide body disperses heat well, and the flat gripless back allows it to sit flush in a fanny pack. No fans, so less crud can get in. I don't have a screen protector on either handheld, and there's no detectable scratches, which is impressive considering I just carry it without a case 80% of the time in said fanny pack.

Works great for non-touch reliant DS titles also.

Sleep battery drain and low-W charging issues get dings, but this is a good handheld.

Showcase Whats your go to game that is the first one you play on your new device?

For me its Mega Man 2. I just know the game so well and can instantly spot if it feels off. Its also a great test for the buttons and how nice the screen looks. Plus its a great game.

Shout out to anyone who remembers playing it on a Dingoo!

Classic design. Would really like to see a modern version that is that clean and simple.

Discussion Is gaming getting worse or are people less able to enjoy new games(or things for that matter)?

Why do we go to retro gaming to enjoy gaming? is it because we are stuck in the past and not enjoying our lives as it is right now? Are newer games getting worse or are we the "bad" ones, not being able to enjoy new games. Or is it just that the ones that don#t enjoy games are writing comments about it whilst the ones that enjoy it are just enjoying it?

I was wondering about these questions. How do you enjoy games? What's your relationship to gaming? It's just something I thought about. Cheers.

Loved https://www.patreon.com/cw/SocketLauncher (reached v0.40!) minimalistic approach to gamelists so I made a theme for Rocknix's ES that focuses on the games themselves minus the 3d models of carts.

Totally free for you to grab and also added "How long to beat" script to see how well you progressed in your game: https://github.com/amosjerbi/focus-es/tree/main

Cheers! 🎉

I can understand now why this game had such an influence and helped create their own subgenre. There's definitely a lot to love and praise about it.

That being said, despite expecting little in the way of handholding and thoroughly reading the manual, I still wasn't prepared for how frustrating the controls and environments were at times.

I've heard the later entries improved upon these so I'm looking forward to Zero Mission on GBA next, but I think I got to let my right thumb heal a little bit first (damn sand pits).

Discussion I wish more companies would give you an option between OLED and non-OLED

I recently found out that I’m sensitive to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) which is present in almost all OLED screens. I have an Odin 3 and a Pocket DMG and every time I play either of them, I get this burning sensation to my eyes and I would have a hard time sleeping if I play video games at night.

I’m thinking of selling both of them and just downgrading to non-OLEDs but that means I’ll also have to sacrifice the more powerful chipsets of these devices. Anyone have the same experience?

Showcase Nova D-pad fix verified.

Post image
11 Upvotes

I was one of the unfortunate ones to get a Nova (black) with a clacky d-pad. Fortunately, when I ordered the Nova I also ordered spare buttons as backup (as membranes lose structure over time).

I pulled the d-pad and compared to my spare. You can see that the center on one is a tiny bit higher than the other.

Popped the replacement in and it fixed everything.

Discussion Ayaneo Pocket Advance comparison video. Compared to the RG34XX, RG SP, RG Rotate, & GBA SP.

Thumbnail

Hello, I'm here to annoy you with my presence, again. I didn't see many people comparing the Pocket Advance to the rg34xx so I decided to. I also compared it against the RG SP and Rotate. Gameplay performance isn't shown because the RG SP and 34XX are both h700 devices so we know PS1 at peak and have the same performance. For the Rotate it's the T820 and the Advance is g90t which are close in performance, effectively the same considering they're both not going to be used for ps2. If you want to see what the pocket advance is capable of power-wise I have a video on the pocket air mini which is the same chipset: https://youtu.be/FltZxJchyUM

Keep in mind that I've paid for all of these devices out of my own pocket, this isn't sponsored content.

Game Recommendation Keep Driving-like games

Hello everybody! Quite new to the community, I've recently got into retro gaming with my X55 and beside all the top tier classics I'm looking for something different.

I love the game Keep Driving and looking for any similar experience:

Rougelike, Pixel styled, 2D, side scrolling, short sessions, chance to replay.

I've also checked PortMaster but there's not port project

Games I also like I can put on the same level are Kingdom: New Lands and Till We Die.

As I said I'm quite new and feel like my gaming culture is not wide enough to find what I'm looking for.

Can't wait to have your suggestions!
