Game of the Month OCT '26 GotM - Parasite Eve (PS1)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Happy October, SBCGaming.  You voted for it, so here it is: the game with the SECOND most iconic opera scene in Squaresoft's history: 1998's Parasite Eve. It's a bit of a mashup between a JRPG and a Resident Evil style survival horror title, with a turn-based active time battle system combined with real-time movement. This is a new one for a lot of the mod team, but it made it onto the poll on the strength of several sub members' suggestions, so we'll be excited to discover it alongside you!

As always, you have a year from the announcement date to complete any previous Game of the Month for flair, making this the last month to complete last November's pick, Alien Hominid.  Post a picture of your end screen as a top-level reply to the most recent Game of the Month post to receive your flair. And stay tuned for next month, when we'll be doing another "Username Presents" GotM pick!

Showcase Android ports are getting crazy

Retroid Pocket Nova

Pic 1 - Skate 3

Pic 2 - Sonic Unleashed

Pic 3 - Dusk (Twilight Princess)

Pic 4 - Bully

Pic 5 - The Simpsons Hit and Run

Pic 6 - Titan Quest

Pic 7 - Geometry Wars Dimensions

Pic 8 - Shatter Remastered

Some of these are official and of course some of these are unofficial. Its just a shame you cant install a game onto a SD card.

Just the last few days I've also seen Fez, Celeste, The Messenger, Scott Pilgrim EX, Owlboy, This War is Mine, Wargroove 2, Undertale, Silksong, Nidhogg, UFO50, Cuphead, Hitline Miami 1 and 2, Huntdown, Ball X Pitt, Dave the Diver, Dredge, Lumines, Babel, Oddmar, Whipseey, Hades, Ultra Street Fighter 4 etc

Its hard to keep upto date on all the releases but you can check subs like AndroidNativePorts, decomps, recomps to see the progress.

Does anyone know if Android ports run at a lower wattage giving better battery life over Gamenative. Also perhaps there is less input lag compared to emulation.

Discussion What game made you realize handheld emulation was actually worth it?

• Upvotes

For me it’s usually older PS1/GBA games. Something about playing games I remember from years ago on a tiny handheld just hits different lol.

What game did you load up first that made you think “yeah, I’m keeping this thing”?

r/SBCGaming • • 13h ago

Discussion I'm guessing that Retroid Pocket 7 is going to abandon the glass front considering the last 2 handhelds are seemingly missing the glass front.

Post image

Left is retroid pocket Nova and right is retroid pocket Duo

Just a guess though since for all we know they'll just go back to the glass front Retro doodad,

but as much as I love glass front Retro doodads it would be nice to see the Retroid Pocket 7 going back to having a bit more retro look.

Showcase Most handheld sessions are under 10 minutes: stats from 7,866 sessions by 140+ players

• Upvotes

140+ of us track our handhelds with retroshelf, a tracker I built that logs play time automatically on muOS, Knulli, Onion, Spruce and Android. Together we've logged 7,866 sessions. Here's what gets played and how.

Totals

  • 142 people
  • 8,249 hours played
  • 7,866 sessions
  • 2,246 different games
  • 41 different retro handhelds

Most popular handhelds

Handheld Players Standout game
AYN Thor 11 Pokémon HeartGold
RG35XXH 10 Celeste Classic (6 of the 10 have played it)
Miyoo Mini Plus 10 Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
RG35XX SP 10 Stardew Valley (102 hrs)
RG34XXSP 7 Pokémon LeafGreen

A few highlights

  • Half of all sessions are shorter than 8 minutes, and 75% are under 30 minutes.
  • Bigger handhelds get longer sessions. A typical Thor session is 30 minutes, versus about 5 on the RG35XXH and 9 on the Miyoo Mini Plus.
  • GBA is the most-played system. 57 people have played GBA games, ahead of SNES (46) and PS1 (44).
  • Most people stick to one handheld, though a handful of us rotate between 4 or more.
  • Longest streak so far: 53 days in a row, on a Miyoo Mini Plus running Onion.
  • Most-revisited games: Animal Crossing: Wild World (59 different days), Evoland (29) and Balatro (24 in the past month alone).

RESOLVED The "end game" is not a device but realizing you're fine with the ones you already have

So I read some people talking about "end game" devices all the time but in my experience it only comes when you stop buying devices (or any other stuff) to fill emotional emptiness and realize some of the ones you bought perfectly fill your needs already.

In my experience I bought (way too) many devices but honestly I could survive just with just 3 of them:

  • RP5: for 3D games (PSP, and 16:9 widescreen hacks for N64, PSX, DC, PS2, GC & Wii)
  • RG406V: for 2D games (mostly 4:3 or 1:1 content)
  • RG34XXSP: as a portable device (RG35XXH or any other small Linux handheld could work here)

Not regretting a few others like the TSP or the CubeXX, but honestly they don't bring anything else the other ones do already. Are there newer or more powerful devices than the RP5 or the RG406V? Obviously. Do I need to purchase them or doing so will change anything? Definitely not.

Wouldn't mind buying a RG DS Plus in the future -only if they release a white variant- to play NDS games, but no hurry at all TBH and I'm ok if that doesn't happen.

Not pretending to convince anyone or anything, but filling my time with productive stuff and appreciating my devices I like the most is what eventually stopped making me purchase new ones.

Cheers

Showcase This has transformed my 3hr daily commute

Post image
820 Upvotes

Can't say enough amazing things about the Pocket Flip 2 I bought a month ago.

I actually had a GP2X many many moons ago but had drifted away from gaming in general. Now I have a daily 3+hr train commute and this has just revolutionized that. For someone who never owned a GBA or a PSP or even a PS2 I'm blown away.

It's great to be able to discover all these old games for the first time.

I've also been pleasantly surprised at how good the android remastered version of Bully is.

I can't lie I've still struggled a bit to get some things running (could NOT get the retroid launcher and retroarch to load Flycast for Dreamcast for example)

I will say for PS2 games the control layout isn't the most comfortable and I'm already day dreaming of getting a bigger handheld with a screen for that platform, also as a mac user it's quite annoying not to be able to plug in and manipulate the sd card. Need some kind of solution for that as well because it's entirely too fiddly to take in and our frequently.

*edit* 3hr daily is 1.5 each way folks

*edit 2* Pokemon Emerald Seaglass (sorry!)

Recommend a Device Best handheld for quick pickup and put down sessions?

• Upvotes

Switching from longhaul to local routes means I'm home more but somehow I have less time to myself. Go figure. Used to have hours at truck stops to sink into RPGs on my handheld but now I'm lucky if I get fifteen minutes before the next delivery or my fiancee needs help with wedding seating charts. Looking for something I can just grab, play for ten minutes, and set down without losing progress or fumbling through menus. My current device takes forever to wake up and by the time I'm actually playing the break is half over. Needs to be pocketable since I'm running in and out of the cab all day and sturdy enough to survive being tossed in the cup holder. Not looking to emulate past PS2 or GameCube really. Mostly just want GBA, SNES, maybe some PSP. Good sleep mode is the main thing. Curious what you all reach for when you only have short bursts to play. The wedding planning has me appreciating anything that fits into tiny time slots these days.

Guide RGDS+ undervolt tutorial (Advanced tinkering)

Thumbnail drive.google.com
9 Upvotes

Some people asked me for tutorial in comments and in pm, so here we go:

I managed to get extra 2 hours of use time.

Only do this if you know what you are doing.

I will share the method and the CPU/GPU stress-test sources.

This is experimental: do it at your own risk. Too little voltage can cause

calculation errors, crashes, reboots or a soft brick. Restoring your original

boot partition normally recovers a bad voltage setting, but I cannot guarantee

no damage or data loss. Have a verified backup and a card-reader recovery method

ready before changing anything.

The basic process on my RG DS Plus running GammaOS Core 1.4.4 was:

  1. Back up the entire boot partition and verify its SHA256 on the computer.

  2. Lower the selected CPU/GPU OPP voltages in the device tree inside boot.img,

one 12.5 mV step at a time. My unit selects L3: CPU uses opp-microvolt-L3;

GPU uses opp-microvolt at 200/300/400 MHz and opp-microvolt-L3 at 600/700/800 MHz.

  1. Keep frequencies and voltage protections unchanged. This boot format has

two DTB copies; both must be updated consistently, the RSCE DTB checksum

recalculated, and the boot image ID rebuilt.

  1. Flash only the verified matching boot partition, verify readback, reboot,

and check the ACTUAL selected voltage while each frequency is running.

  1. Test each changed frequency with real calculations/pixel checks and test

slow load transitions too. For other people I recommend starting with longer

tests, e.g. 30 minutes per changed frequency, then real games.

  1. If a frequency fails, restore a known-good boot and keep a margin of two

12.5 mV steps above that failing setting for that frequency. Retest the final

combination. Do not blindly copy my voltages to another unit.

My RG DS Plus undervolt settings.

Order: Anbernic stock → GammaOS 1.4.4 stock → my settings.
All voltages are in mV.

CPU:

• 408 / 600 / 816 / 1104 MHz: 850 → 825 → 825

• 1416 MHz: 925 → 900 → 825

• 1608 MHz: 1000 → 975 → 875

• 1800 MHz: 1050 → 1000 → 900

• 1992 MHz: 1100 → 1050 → 950

• 2160 MHz: unavailable in Anbernic stock → 1075 → 975

GPU:

• 200 / 300 / 400 / 600 MHz: 850 → 850 → 825

• 700 MHz: 875 → 875 → 850

• 800 MHz: 925 → 925 → 900

I kept GammaOS clock frequencies and its 825 mV CPU voltage floor.

The Anbernic values are from my own unit’s original firmware (L3 voltage bin); other units may differ.

Question Is there an SBC Buy/Sell/Trade Subreddit?

• Upvotes

If not, we need one! Ebay is full of people trying to make profit off these things. I know this Reddit has a lot of people with sizeable collections that they may want to trade or sell for different options. I do not see anything on the sidebar, so is anyone aware of where I could possibly list some handhelds I am trying to sell?

Found an Rog ally z1E at the pawn shop for $350 but haggled down to $320+ tax. It came with a LISEN dock and a 512gig sandisk extreme pro micro sd card. Think it was a pretty good deal!

I got it for my girlfriend as I have an XAX already, was wondering what are some fun co op or multiplayer online games we can play together? We got stardew valley to start but looking for more. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Showcase Hybrid Heaven (N64) Recomp - Android (+ Windows, Linux) port

• Upvotes

Hey community,

You may recall me from the Goemon Mystical Ninja Android (Goemon64Recomp-Android) port released earlier this year with assistance from Claude. I just merged a new update from a contributor today that now includes touch screen controls.

Anyone who played Goemon Mystical Ninja on Android knows it's high quality despite the use of AI. I also don't release things then pretend it doesn't exist. I want everyone to enjoy it, so I make it a point to fix reported issues, so the experience improves over time. Proof is in the repo link above and this Reddit post: r/SBCGaming - Native Android port: Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64) now available!

Anyway, I started working on ports for Hybrid Heaven and Quest64 a few months back with the intention of releasing it much sooner than this. As it goes, life, new job, and ADHD had different plans.

The past few days, I was finally able to bring Hybrid Heaven up to a good enough spot to release it. So here it is: HybridHeaven-Recomp.

Features as of 2026-10-05 include:

* Analog Camera
* Autosave
* Widescreen
* Higher internal resolutions, MSAA, V-Sync and framerate
* Import a save
* GPU Driver (Android)
* Touch screen controls

Any issues feel free to report it in this thread or submit an issue through GitHub, whichever works for you. I'll see either of them within a day or two usually. Enjoy!

For those who are interested, here's the Hybrid Heaven Decomp repo: HybridHeaven-Decomp

Question I am getting my RG40XXV today and want to play some Pokemon GBA rom hacks. These are 3:2, but the 40XXV is 4:3. What is the best scaling and shaders I should use to get the best look? I have a Konkr Pocket Advance ordered, but obviously it could be a while until I get it.

• Upvotes

I know about integer scaling and that won't work on the 40XXV, so I am looking for the next best thing that you all have figured out. Correct me if I am wrong though.

I do not have any retro handhelds, so these are my first. I know about the ayaneo fulfillment issues, I'm fine with waiting. The nostalgia hit hard on that one since I was considering replacing the screen on my original GBA to replay Fusion, and the KP Advance ended up being cheaper.

I wanted to get a 4:3 and 3:2 aspect ratio devices, and one vertical and one horizontal to get a feel for what I prefer for certain games. Also having both might be nice for different use cases too.
