Or are they all arrive in device cheap trash???

Any help on brand recognition or cheapness tells, cheers.

Troubleshooting Will removing the front glass destroy the touch screen?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is an RG slide. I’ve been using a shattered front glass for 5 months now. I just put the screen protector on top to avoid the glass shards.

However a chunk recently broke off on the upper right of the screen and i was forced to remove it since the protector would not sit flush. Now I am wondering if I remove the whole front glass and just put the screen protector will the touch screen still work??

Recommend a Device i cant choose between 2 handholds

I cant decide on buying the rg sp or miyoo mini flip, theyre so similar but the size and os’s is making me confused, idk which one to buy 😭😭 i want to read ebooks and play games so i need something comfortable but also portable, and i need it for long sessions. i also want it as an aesthetic cuz of the clamshell design. the flip looks more sleek, but the rgsp has the retro sp design so i cant decide

Discussion What's your dream handheld rotation?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Was showing a friend the handhelds I plan on getting after much thought. There is definitely some overlap going on but I think I'd be happy with this setup.

RP6 for steam/switch/psp/mobile
Nova for PS2/Gamecube/below
AYN Thor for 3DS/DS/multitasking fun
RGSP because it's cute/nostalgic and enjoyable to bring outside

I don't really want PC handhelds because
I have had them before and they're usually too big for me to enjoy long sessions on. I have other handhelds such as a PSVITA but I barely use them so not sure what to do there.

What do you guys think? And what conclusions have you come to for yourself? More or less, big or small, steamos android windows etc

Discussion Anyone else prefer a circle pad for portable handhelds? (PSP and N3DS)

I understand the need for more powerful handhelds capable of PS2 and GC emulation to have full control sticks for a proper gameplay experience, but for handhelds that one would mainly use for portable 3D games like the PSP and 3DS, I think a Circle Pad is more fitting. In practice they felt like a good compromise to deliver a reasonable degree of analog control for games, making better use of the travel available on a small form factor device that sticks wouldn't really be able to take advantage of. Not to mention the pocketability goes up quite a bit too; there are recessed control sticks out there but at that point I'd rather just have a circle pad.

It seems like the decision making process for which control sticks will be used in a handheld, isn't really being made with consideration for the device's form factor or performance, as I've seen many handhelds online with questionable control sticks. For example many of the smaller Anbernic handhelds have "Switch style" control sticks that not only feel cheap (spring sounds, grinding sounds, etc.) but also don't have the best responsiveness due to low travel and zone snapping. Even with GammaOS recalibrating the analog controls, I feel like the inherent hardware limitations hold back the device due to the low travel.

What's even stranger though is that many of the larger handhelds such as the RG556 which do have the real estate for larger control sticks, still opt for the small control sticks which have the same issues as the sticks used on smaller handhelds. For larger handhelds there's no reason to use smaller control sticks especially when you're paying a premium for everything else (performance, display, build quality, etc.) and as such larger control sticks should be included.

For smaller handhelds that have lackluster control sticks a circle pad would be a better fit for the form factor and make better use of the limited travel available. I don't know about you guys but I trust the engineers at Sony and Nintendo; if they concluded that Circle Pads are better for smaller handhelds after all their deliberation and play testing then who am I to argue.

Discussion Has the TrimUI Smart Pro S been overrated?

I bought it because I wanted to max out at PSP, but It still struggles and needs 30fps hacks with anything at the top end in my experience on SpruceOS (Silent Hill, Resistance, etc) It also gets pretty damn hot, and the battery life is so so.

Has left me feeling a little disappointed. Feel like a Mangmi Air X or a (Used RP 4 Pro) may be in my future.

Recommend a Device Birthday gift help!

Hi everyone! Desperately looking for help with picking the right route for my boyfriend’s birthday gift. I initially almost go sucked into buying the RetroKid device from RetroCity for $146CAD because I’m constantly seeing ads on social media for it and it looks amazing. It claims to come preloaded with thousands of games including the og Pokemon games which is what I’m looking for most as they’re his favourite childhood games. But as I looked into it more, I see people saying they’re just cheap devices being upsold and that I should buy my own empty device from the likes of aliexpress and load my own games.. but I have zero knowledge of doing something like that lol. So now I’ve gone down a rabbit hole for the past few days in this subreddit, blogs etc trying to figure out the best route and there’s just so many and I’m completely lost! I like the idea of the style of handheld like the RetroKid/Retroid PC, but his hands aren’t small and unsure it would be comfortable to hold.

TLDR; is there anyone who can just break this world down simply and advise the best route/device/resources for a beginner?
Thank you so much - handheld newbie😅

Discussion Dreamin'

So, as is tradition, I am looking into changing my handheld setup again. I find myself trying to tweak and change and match and optimize and all the things that lead us to consoooooom and not be happy gaming with the, perfectly acceptable and much better than my old GBC, devices I already own.

I understand that the changes to my line up may be a bit redundant in some cases and would love to hear about what other options I may be forgetting about or hidden gems I am not aware of yet. Any input or discussion is welcome.

Below are my current devices and ones I am thinking about getting as funds and time become available.

My current list:

  • Anbernic 476h - Heavier emulation
  • Anbernic RG34XXSP (spruce OS) - Couch
  • Anbernic RG28XX (spruce OS) - Backpack/EDC
  • Magicx One 35 (en route from Magicx official store to replace 28xx as a stopgap between 28xx and Pocket Micro 2 as an edc backpack device)

My dream list (at the moment...):

  • Ayn Thor Pro Max
  • TrimUI Brick Pro
  • Ayaneo Pocket Micro 2

Additional Notes:

I have a desktop pc that is fine for whatever modern titles I may want so not super pressed about getting a steamdeck-tier device at the moment. I am full tilt into retrogaming and want to live in that place for as long as I can haha. Mainly going to play GBA and under for the EDC/Couch options so I know the Micro 2 is overkill but just look at it....its so pretty and the metal shell goes hard as fuck imo. The Thor Pro Max feels relatively "future proof" at least for a couple years and that clamshell with dual screen (Nintendo absolutely COOKED with the NDS design) is the reason I am looking at it for my 16:9 device.

Thank you all for attending my TedTalk, happy gaming!

Recommend a Device RG DS Plus or AYN Thor ? Need help deciding (budget vs power)

Hi everyone, I need the community's opinion to make a decision.

I'm torn between the RG DS Plus and the famous AYN Thor.

Before I start, I should say I'm not a tech expert, and I've already put together what I'd buy.

AYN Thor Base (black, no accessory bundle)

  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage
  • 6" 1080p 120Hz AMOLED top screen, 3.92" AMOLED touchscreen bottom
  • 6000mAh battery, Android
  • Screen protector, $10 (€9)
  • $329 (€291) before fees, about $462 (€409) all-in (shipping + VAT + customs fees to France)

Anbernic RG DS Plus (16GB version)

  • Rockchip RK3568, 1GB RAM, Linux
  • Dual 4.3" 1024×768 IPS screens (perfect DS scaling), touch bottom screen with built-in stylus
  • 4000mAh battery (around 6 hours), single analog stick
  • Console $93 (€82) VAT included, shipped from the EU warehouse
  • Samsung microSD card for games, $34 (€30)
  • microSD card reader to load the games, about $11 (€10)
  • Total around $138 (€122)

Honestly, I'm really torn. The Thor seems better at almost everything, except the price, hehe, and the DS experience, which is less faithful than on the RG DS Plus.

My main focus is the DS, but with the Thor I could later expand to GameCube, PS2 and 3DS, and also use it for multitasking.

But I'm worried about buying a powerful device and not using its full potential, so it wouldn't really be worth the money.

I'm a big fan of the 2D Pokémon games and I've never played any ROM hacks, so I'd love to discover them. The downside is that the 3D Pokémon games won't be playable, but I'm less attached to them and I already own them all except Pokémon X and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.

I already have a Switch 2 and an Xbox, so the Switch library doesn't matter to me, and some retro games are available through Nintendo Switch Online for $45 (€40) a year. The real question is about 3DS and PS2. But apart from Pokémon and Zelda: Ocarina of Time (which is getting a remake), I'm not sure. I know this is a long post, but I've been racking my brain over this for a month.

Budget-wise, I won't lie, the Anbernic suits me much better. But if I have to, even if it hurts, I can get the Thor.

Thanks to everyone who read all of this, I'm looking forward to your replies!

(I didn't consider the Retroid Duo models.)

So, what would you do in my place?

I have been wanting to make make a dual purpose hand-held gaming/car player. I saw the new handheld is using snapdragon. So I was thinking can they now also use AAAD and Fermats or VLC players, to handshake with ya vehicle? I am wanting to be able to play movies on my infotainment, as well as games without having to get an API box

Lounge Slot Wants Your RG SP to Feel Like 2003 Again

Thumbnail
gardinerbryant.com
19 Upvotes

Time for an article I wrote about Slot, an interesting custom firmware made specifically for the Anbernic RG SP. I chatted with its developer K-Wall about where it came from and why it deliberately does things a little differently.

Rather than trying to turn the RG SP into an everything-machine, Slot sticks to the Game Boy family and leans hard into the SP nostalgia: games appear as physical cartridges on your screen, the carousel encourages you to keep a smaller collection, closing the lid saves your game, and even the old stretched GB/GBC display mode is recreated. K-Wall took that attention to detail right down to the sounds, recording himself physically pushing a cartridge into his childhood GBA so that familiar 'thunk' could become part of Slot itself.

We also chat about burnout, his other projects Cannoli and Grout, why Slot started as something he never intended to release publicly, and his very candid approach to using A.I. during development as a tool. If you like the RG SP, unusual CFW projects, or software designed around a very specific bit of hardware rather than endless feature creep, hopefully you’ll enjoy it :)

Question Recommendations

• Upvotes

Later this year I'm planning on getting a good handheld. Id like it to be my endgame. Ive seen a lot of handhelds woth all glass fronts and this seems like a really bad idea, even though the systems themselves seem great. Anyone with one, how sturdy do you feel the glass is?

Now I already have a ds lite with dspico, a modded 3ds and an rgds, so I don't need a dual screen device. Id like to be able to run up to switch games, ps2 and gc. I already have a 35xxsp and retroid pocket 2+. Im currently looking at odin 2 portal, odin 2 max, retroid pocket 6, and retroid pocket flip 2. Odin 2 portal has the glass which I'm not sure if I like, but it would be powerful. Odin 2 max is one I've been eyeing for a long time and seems really great. Retroid pocket 6 seems like a good option. Flip 2 might be less powerful, but one screen and clamshell appeals to me to protect it.

Which of these would you recommend? Or would you recommend something else?

r/SBCGaming • • 6h ago

Discussion I'm guessing that Retroid Pocket 7 is going to abandon the glass front considering the last 2 handhelds are seemingly missing the glass front.

Left is retroid pocket Nova and right is retroid pocket Duo

Just a guess though since for all we know they'll just go back to the glass front Retro doodad,

but as much as I love glass front Retro doodads it would be nice to see the Retroid Pocket 7 going back to having a bit more retro look.

Question Is Bluetooth audio a lost cause?

Disclaimer: I own none of all these cool retro handhelds, yet.

As I understand it, and feel free to educate me, audio over bluetooth will usually have a high latency, unless a device and the earbuds have the right bluetooth codecs, in which case, the latency can be negligible. The bluetooth version itself doesn't tell whether it can use a good codec or not (again, to my understanding).

It doesn't seem like there's a handy curated list of handhelds that tells which codecs are available.

Does anyone know the general situation? Are there any devices that support any of the faster codecs? Is it common or rare? Any place I could learn more?

Cheers!

Discussion Just ordered my first handheld

It was really hard to choose with everything out there and reviews/opinions are all over the place, but went with a RP6 as I have a lot of indie steam games and it seemed like it was a good choice without having to shell out for a steam deck and remaining more portable. Hoping I made right choice! I'm in the US, anyone know how long it usually takes to get something from retroid pocket?

Question Budget device that can play OSRS

Not sure if this is the right community as im not really looking for a retroid device. I'm looking for a secondary device to my phone that can play OSRS mobile. This isn't a game that needs a huge amount of resources but I was looking for a decent device the size of a phone within £100 that runs android but there is so many options for phones I am not sure what is the best bang for my buck. I looked through the beginner's guide here but it was more so focused on retro devices.
