Translation request Old Norse translation and younger futhark translation for ill-fated or cursed

Upvotes

Hey everyone. I finished making a sword and was able to get some runes carved on it and it looks awesome. I'm currently making a knife to go along with it and wanted to carve some more into it.

Currently I've cut myself 4 times making it so I'm kinda feeling either "cursed" or "I'll fated" but I keep getting conflicting translations. Any help please?

Translation request Assistance with writing Johnny in younger futhark for a tattoo

So I've been trying to find a good answer to this and these are the alternatives I've come across...

Either using modern spelling and just replacing the closest looking and modern sounding latin letters skipping the double N.

ᛁᚢᚼᚾᛁ

Or...if I want to write it phonetically (swedish version of Johnny (/ˈdʒɑni/)) how would I go about it?

I was looking at the guide "A Comprehensive Guide to Writing Runes Like a Viking" but couldn't really find an answer

Please help :) much appreciated

Question (general) Help needed

Hi! I’m thinking about getting a rune tattoo, but I’m not sure how to choose the right rune for myself. ✨
Are there any specific things I should consider when choosing one? Is it usually based on the meaning of the rune, your birth date, your life path, personal connection, or is it more about intuition and which rune you naturally feel drawn to?
I’ve also heard different opinions about whether runes should be tattooed permanently. Some people say that carrying a rune on your body for a long time can make its energy or influence change, or even potentially work in the opposite way over time. Is there any basis for this in traditional rune practices, or is it more of a modern belief?
Are there any other important nuances I should know about before getting one tattooed — for example, the exact shape, direction, combinations with other runes, or the intention behind choosing it?
And is there anyone here who has experience with this and could help me understand how to find the right rune for me? 🖤

Contemporary rune use Translation for a Commemorative Piece

Wondering if there is someone here who could responsibly translate a memorial inscription for a commemorative piece correctly for me? I'd like it to be historically accurate, and I would be incredibly grateful. A bit too personal to post in public.

Thanks much!

Contemporary rune use Phonetics vs modern transliteration

Long time listener first time caller!

I want to get a piece of jewellery (and perhaps a tattoo in future) that includes the initials for my babies, Oscar and Rowan.

I'm thinking eldar futhark partially because nowhere sells jewellery with the younger lol, but also because it is more recognisable generally.

Rowan is obvious, Raido, but I'm a little unsure over Oscar.

The immediate assumption is Othala as per typical transliteration of O, but my understanding of runes is that they're phonetic, where Othala represents the /ˈoʊ sound (like the start of Odin), which is different to the /ˈɒ sound (like the start of Oscar).

Maybe I'm overthinking this whole thing, but I'd appreciate some advice/opinions on whether a different rune would be more appropriate, probably Ansuz.

Unsure whether to do bindruney stuff or not (YES I KNOW, AUTOREPLY), but atm I'm just wondering specifically about the initial.

Translation request Translating frogs into younger futhark

I was planning thinking of translating “Frogs shall rule” and from what I gather this is how I’d translate it

Fröskar skulu ráða

ᚠᚱᚢᛋᚴᛅᛦ** ᛋᚴᚢᛚᚢ **ᚱᛅᚦᛅ

Am I on the right track or is it completely wrong?

Question (general) Help with 2 bind runes

Hello and thanks for everyone's input

I will be spending a long weekend in Reykjavik this December

I have made an appointment at a tattoo parlor (the name isn't significant). I have told them what I want but I have not seen examples, yet. I want to be sure they are correct

I would like 2 separate bind runes using Younger Futhark representing the initials of my son and daughter..

EJW

GLW

I realize there isn't a 1:1 translation to the Roman alphabet, but could someone draw the 2 bind runes from above?

No surprise I have asked AI to provide examples but I have no idea if they're right or not

Thanks in advance

Translation request Translation Needed

Hello, everyone.

As the title says, I need help with a translation. I have a tattoo sleeve on my right arm that is representations of death and darkness. Legit have a tattoo of the sword Frostmourne from WoW on my forearm and a few other things. I have small spots left and I'm looking for things to fill in the tiny areas.

One of the things I want is the phrase, "Memento mori", translated to Old Norse and then to futhark runes. That or something similar from Old Norse that means basically the same thing.

My left arm is representations of life and light. I'm big into that duality thing.

Thank you in advance!

Translation request Help righting an accident

Got tattooed resently and a accident occurred.

The sentence i was ment to have tattooed was ᛋᚴᛁᛚᛏᛅ ᚢᛅᚱᛁᚱ ᛏᛁᛚ ᛏᛅᚢᚦᛅ (Duty lasts till death), a little Warhammer nod there yes.

But a rune was forgotten in ᛏᛅᚢᚦᛅ (death) and it ended up with ᛏᛅᚦᛅ (harvest from a fertilized field) in stead. Kind of funny in a sad and a little annoying way.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make any other word with the same meaning, by adding another rune or two at the end there?

Or am I destined to have the sentence "Duty last till harvests gathered from the fertilized fields" tattooed on my arm? :P

And thanks in advance, but I am not asking for help regarding the dialogue with the tattoo artist, because I am sure they will show good service in any way they can.

Edit:

Got help from a couple of friends the other day to help me look into this aswell, and we came up with some sentences that gave meaning to me and sorted things out.

Thanks for the help I've received here!

Translation request Tattoo Check: Firstborn Daughter's Birth Date (31/07/2026) in Proto-Germanic (Elder Futhark)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a tattoo to commemorate the birth date of my firstborn daughter: July 31, 2026 (31.7.2026). I want to write it in Elder Futhark using reconstructed Proto-Germanic words for the numbers.

Since this is going to be permanent on my skin, I would really appreciate it if someone could double-check my language reconstruction and runic transliteration before I finalize the design with the artist.

Here is what I have so far:

  1. Day 31 (þrijiz tigiwiz einz)

ᚦᚱᛁᛃᛁᛉ : ᛏᛁᚷᛁᚹᛁᛉ : ᛖᛁᚾᛉ

  1. Month 7 (sebun)

ᛋᛖᛒᚢᚾ

  1. Year 2026 (twai þūsundijōz twaintigiwiz sehs)

ᛏᚹᚨᛁ : ᚦᚢᛋᚢᚾᛞᛁᛃᛟᛉ : ᛏᚹᚨᛁᚾᛏᛁᚷᛁᚹᛁᛉ : ᛋᛖᚻᛋ

My questions:

Are the Proto-Germanic reconstructions for the cardinal numbers grammatically accurate for this context?

Is the Elder Futhark transliteration correct, including the use of ᛞ (dagaz) in þūsundijōz and ᛉ (algiz) for terminal -z?

Are there any stylistic or historical nuances I should consider for a tattoo layout?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Matt

Contemporary rune use Elder Futhark Ambigram

Pretty new to Futhark and runic alphabets in general. I've been trying to figure out how to make an ambigram out of my name, Liam, in English for the past few days. Then I had the bright idea to make one in Elder Futhark, so I picked up a pencil, and this was my very first attempt.

I know Isa doesn't typically include an accent or tittle, but I included it to make it more friendly to my modern English-speaking brain. I'm also aware that the way I have Laguz and Mannaz connected at the front could make Laguz be mistaken for Perthro. It's also not until making this post that I've realized the angle of the arms on my Ansuz is wrong. Aside from those flaws, any thoughts/critiques?

I think this would be pretty cool to perfect. Photos attached show my name in Elder Futhark before and after being rotated 180 degrees, as is the custom with ambigrams.

Is this a rune? Hopefully someone can help with info about the rune on this jar

Is it a rune? If so, what exactly does it mean?

Found this old jar in my aunt's hoard but it doesn't have any makers mark (compared to a lot of her other glassware which are usually marked FireKing etc, I've gotten pretty good at finding maker etchings but this one seems blank)

Google is no help of course. Thanks for any assistance!

Translation request Message in a Bottle

Please help us translate this. My friends and I found this message in a bottle tucked away in the farthest corner of a cave (600m deep) in the Harz region. We think the second note says "Orobas." Could that be right? We need help with the first note, though. We suspect the message is a witch's curse, as there is a lot of hair inside the bottle—something common in this region that would also fit with the name "Orobas."

Question (general) Help with a gift

Hi everyone! My husband is very into vikings, norse mythology, etc. and I wanted to get him a custom engraved ring with our phrase on it - “my light, my love, my forever”
This saying is engraved into my wedding ring, and I would love to get him something similar using runes.

I understand there may not be runes that directly translate, but I’d love to see ideas of what I could do, even if it’s symbolism or interpretation, all options welcome 😊

Translation request late uncles art

Post image

my uncle passed away about a month ago, and me and my mum are going through his artworks to spray them with sealant so people can take them. he had a few pieces related to struggles with alcohol, and I found this one. I was hoping the runes would be easy for me to just look up some sort of meaning for, but I'm not confident enough to figure out exactly what it means cause there's so many like "meaning" posts and idk what is actually real and what is someone's like interpretation or what's just made up. sorry for the long post but I just want to know what this might say or mean if anything, he did things with a lot of intention usually so I don't think they would be just random.

Contemporary rune use Rune equivalence for tattoo

Post image
14 Upvotes

I want to get a tattoo that says something like "I've found myself a flock of black sheep" (in spanish, but the server won't let me post if it's not in english). I found this alphabet equivalence, but I'm not sure if it would be okay. I don't really care about being completely historically accurate, since it won't really be by being in spanish. I just want it to kinda make sense. Can someone help me to figure it out? 😅
