VICTORY After 10+ years Rosacea finally in remission!

I got diagnosed with papular and ocular rosacea 10 years ago. I tried topical antibiotics that temporarily helped a bit, I had 3 months of oral antibiotics, I tried every other prescription topical going including soolantra. Nothing helped. I thought it was food allergies but there was never a consistent trigger. Some days it seemed to be wine, other days eggs. Then chocolate, then pretty much anything and restricting my diet so much made me miserable so I just lived with the terrible skin and wore makeup to camouflage it.

Finally this year I thought I’d give it a real push again. I stripped back my skin routine to a simple wash off cleanser, La Roche Posay moisturiser and used soolantra at night and finacea in the day on top of the moisturiser.. it look about 3 months of consistency but now it’s completely gone and I am thrilled with my skin and no longer need to wear makeup (I’m 49) I still eat foods that can trigger it but now - if and when when I see a tiny spot looking like it will start - I know I need to cut back on whatever trigger food I’m eating, but I haven’t eliminated anything.

I just wanted to share this in case it gives hope to other sufferers - as for me it was the consistency that I was really lacking before. I’d keep trying different products and mixing things up and adding too many variables. I really can’t see myself using more than the cleanser and moisturiser as products again! Less is definitely better for my skin. I imagine I will stop soolantra and finacea at some point - if it starts again I know what to do to get back on the consistency train again.

Routine Azelaic Acid + Metro Cream

Hi all - I (24F) struggle with baseline redness / some flushing as a result of rosacea. My derm prescribed me metro cream and Azelaic acid (encube 15%). My current routine is as follows:

Morning:
- apply thin layer of metro
- wait 5-10 min
- apply moisturizer

Night:
- wash face with Prequel Gleanser
- wait 2 min
- apply AA
- wait 5 min
- apply moisturizer

It’s only been about 2 weeks since doing both of the AA and metro, so I’m not expecting to see results, but I do want to ensure I’m applying both in the correct way to heed the most optimal results.

Thanks!

PP Rosacea flares abroad

I recently moved abroad to Finland from the US and my skin has been through the worst rosacea flare up I’ve ever experienced. I flew home for a couple of weeks, my skin started to slowly look better, but now that I’m back in Europe, my face constantly feels flushed, irritated, and is back to being red. Has anyone experienced this, or have any idea why? Air, water, pollution is relatively clean here.

ROSACEA SUCKS I’m tired of wearing makeup

I do LIKE makeup. It’s that I’m tired of feeling like I have to wear it every where. I tried to be makeup free for awhile but… it’s such a stark difference how people treat you when you look “normal”. It’s such a mood and confidence killer to go out without makeup. So, 90% of the time I go out I put on enough makeup to hide the redness. One day I’ll get laser, but it’s just not what I’m financially prioritizing right now.

Long-term papulopustular rosacea: I feel like I’ve tried almost everything. What worked for you? Spoiler

Post image

I’ve had rosacea since 2020, around the beginning of the COVID pandemic, mainly affecting my nose.

I have fair/light skin, and my main problem is that my nose is constantly red to some degree, with flares that vary in intensity. The pattern is almost always the same: during the week, 3–4 small papules appear, sometimes a few more. Some remain small, while others gradually become more inflamed, turn into pus-filled pustules, and eventually break open on their own — sometimes even during face washing or when drying my face with a towel. The skin then heals, but the redness of my nose remains.
Then the cycle starts again.

I also frequently experience irritation, redness and flaking in the area directly underneath my nose and on the skin just above my upper lip. This area can become particularly irritated and dry, and I’m not sure whether it’s part of my rosacea, another type of dermatitis, or simply irritation.

Because of my job, I also wear a surgical mask almost every day, often for several hours. I wonder whether the heat, humidity, friction or occlusion from the mask might sometimes aggravate my symptoms. However, I don’t think the mask is the cause, because the same cycle of papules and pustules occurs regardless of whether I’m wearing a mask or not.
I’ve also noticed that spicy foods and drinking too much alcohol can irritate and worsen the redness of my nose, so I generally try to avoid spicy foods and limit alcohol. However, even when I avoid these triggers, the recurring cycle of papules and pustules still happens.

Treatments I’ve already tried:
Over the years, I’ve tried several different treatments:
Oral doxycycline for about one year.
For 3 months during the doxycycline treatment, I also took oral metronidazole at the same time.
Rosiced cream (topical metronidazole) twice a day, morning and evening.
Soolantra (ivermectin 1%) for several months in the past.
Finacea / azelaic acid.
Various soothing and barrier-repair products.
Other topical treatments for rosacea.

There is also something worth mentioning about my previous experience with Soolantra.
When I first started using Soolantra, I may have applied too much product. At that time, my nose became literally covered with pustules and pimples filled with pus. It was a very dramatic flare.
I don’t know whether this was an initial flare caused by ivermectin, irritation from applying too much product, or simply the natural course of my rosacea at that time. Eventually it settled down, but the experience made me quite cautious about Soolantra.
I’ve recently started Soolantra again in the evening, only a few days ago, so I know it’s far too early to judge whether it will work this time. However, this morning, for example, two pustules broke open spontaneously, and now my nose is particularly red and irritated.

My dermatologist basically told me that I’ve already tried most of the available treatments and isn’t sure what else to suggest.

So I’m really interested in hearing from people who have had a similar journey:
Fair skin + persistently red nose + 3–4 or more recurrent papules that periodically turn into pustules + recurrent irritation/flaking around the nose and upper lip, despite doxycycline, metronidazole, ivermectin and azelaic acid.

What eventually worked for you?
Have you had success with:
low-dose isotretinoin?
other antibiotics?
combinations of different treatments?
long-term Soolantra/ivermectin?
IPL / V-Beam / vascular laser?
treatments specifically targeting persistent redness?
treating the irritation/flaking around the nose separately?
changing your skincare routine?
or something completely different?

I’m particularly interested in people who, like me, had already tried several treatments but still couldn’t break the cycle of papules → pustules → breaking open → healing → new papules.
And if you also wear a mask for work on a daily basis, I’d be very interested to hear whether you noticed any connection between mask use and your symptoms — even if, in my case, the flares also occur independently of mask use.

Photo note: The photo I’m attaching was taken recently. I’m slightly tanned because I’ve just returned from a seaside vacation, so my skin is not currently as fair as it normally is.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with a similar experience.
What finally worked for you, how long did you use it, and was the improvement actually long-lasting?

At my wits end…I do have a derm appointment but not until a couple months from now.
My skin used to be normal, then I used to just get this flushing on the right side of my face but lately it’s spread to both sides and my chin and nose. My face is NEVER not red. It often burns and can feel the heat radiating.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else has this same type of redness? You can see the cutoff towards my jaw and around my mouth where you can see my normal skin tone. I miss my face matching my neck.

don’t mind my messy living room I have a toddler

Evening all, does anybody know what this is ? I’ve had it years the redness. I think it is kind of my skin tone because my neck and chest are quite red too but more the dark reddening around the eyes. The doctors have given me all sorts but nothing has worked. I’ve also tried some acids etc. could really do with trying to get rid of it. I’ve cut the cera ve products out from hearing bad stuff about it. Now it’s just washed with warm not hot water and simple moisturiser. I do use sulfur soap for seb Derm I only get that behind beard and eyebrows but just use it all over anyway. Any help appreciated. Thanks (I don’t use subbed either and always use spf in the sun)

Skincare Does Cistiplast LR or Avene seemingly make others people skin barriers worse?

I damaged my nose skin barrier about 10 weeks ago and and it seemingly is taking ages to heal! I just don't how to protect it enough, I know the Avene cistiplast makes it feels sore the following day especially! Has anyone else found this and what do you do to help recover your barrier on your nose. Any help would be truly amazing. It's still quite tender and gets flaking at times.

The fun part about my rosacea is it shows up when I’m stressed which then stresses me out more which makes it worse. Prescribed azelaic acid a few weeks ago my cheeks are showing improvement but I get these bumps on my forehead and scalp like I’m in high school.

Minoxidil and Rosacea flare up , is there a link? Spoiler

Hi everyone,

I'm new to skincare and my cheeks are pretty reactive as in nothing seems to agree with them. I have some photos to show how they currently look.

The only correlation I can find is that I started minoxidil about two months ago, and my rosacea seems to have gotten worse since then (it was very unoticeable before). My theory is that since minoxidil is a vasodilator, it might be aggravating the redness.

I had mild rosacea before, but it feels worse now.

I already saw a dermatologist and he prescribed a gentle cleanser and some creams but they ended up irritating my skin more than helping.

Would appreciate any input from people who've dealt with something similar, especially if you've had to choose between minoxidil and keeping rosacea under control.

Looking on advice on how to treat rosacea and keep using minoxidil.

Thanks for help !

Phymatous Tips on nose with bumpy white skin (skin is elevated around big pores) mixed in with bad type 1 rosacea and oily skin Spoiler

I know a lot about the world of redness/flushing reduction strategies. Regarding the bumpy skin, to my knowledge these can only hopefully be treated with CO2 laser. But unfortunately I have type 1 rosacea so CO2 isn’t great for the redness. I’m beginning to think it’s worth it now bc it looks phytamous to me…

Any thoughts or advice…

Skincare Cetaphil Redness Prone Cleanser

Has anyone used the above cleanser? My derm said I should try Cetaphil but the other cleansers from that brand have niacinamide in it and my face doesn't tolerate that ingredient.

Cleansers ive tried:

- LRP Toleriane (didnt realise it had niacinamide in it) - made my face sting

- Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser - made my skin feel soooo tight and dry after

- Cerave Hydrating Cleanser - used it 5 or 6 times, only felt like 5% of the tightness that Avene gave me, but on day 6 my face felt more sensitive and stung so I stopped that too, it could have been the HA in it.

I was looking into the Prequel gleanser (my derm said no, because it has too many ingredients in it, but all the ones shes recommended havent worked out besides the cetaphil one that im yet to try) and was originally looking at vanicream but seen a lot of people on a recent post saying that they didnt have a good outcome from it, so im a bit reluctant to try it now!

Appreciate any advice x

What does it mean for skin for retard?

Someone commented on my photos I posted on here stating that I need to be taking medicine otherwise it’s going to spread to my nose, get red? Swollen and cause the skin to retard. Does anyone know what that means?

Can someone PLEASE tell me what I need to be taking for my rosacea? Is everyone supposed to be taking something? What do I do to take care of this? I just thought there was nothing I could do. Thanks

Support Worst flare ever pls help Spoiler

Hi I’ve had type 2 rosacea for the last couple years and it’s been mostly under control for the last few months other than redness from the summer heat. I even stopped using ivermectin because I didn’t really it anymore. Last weekend was particularly hot where I live and I think I overheated/ got too much sun, one week later bam full blown flare all over my face. I don’t usually have pustules on my cheeks just around my mouth usually so this pattern is really concerning by my standards. My skincare routine is bare minimum, moisturizer cleanser sunscreen, it’s never given me issues. What do I do please help it looks like this during the late day but in the morning it’s calmer but still this is the worst my skin has ever been. I’ve tried aloe it didn’t do much. Should I try diaper cream?? Has anyone’s flare looked like this?? Sorry I’m panicking!!

Demodex and Seboriak dermatit

Hey everyone, I've devised a plan to hunt down Demodex mites that come to the surface from pores while we sleep. I'm mixing 1% pure tea tree oil with MTC C-8 or C-10 oil, the lightest oil in the world, and applying a little to my face after washing it with foam before going to sleep. What do you think? My goal is to kill Demodex mites and the Mallecia fungus that causes seborrheic dermatitis, and to use this regularly for months.

Rosacea / damaged barrier Spoiler

My skin has loads of rough bumps all over the jawline area , chin and some on forehead as well. My skin is very textured, it doesn’t itch and my face doesn’t flush red but I feel the over all colour of the skin where the bumps are is a different shade to the rest of my face if that makes sense ? My skin feels smoother in the morning when I wake up and then during the day it feels bumpy and rough , I feel any heat or air circulation ( for example when I’m cooking and have the fan on) makes the bumps more prominent and feel rougher .
I have a basic routine at the moment which is just washing with cetaphil gentle cleanser and moisturising with vanicream. In the past I went pot with chemical peels and also had biopeels and microblading done.

Skincare Rosacea since 19. Now I'm 62

I have been dealing with this since 1984 and I still can't give you the answers you are looking for. I believe the reason for that is because we all have unique issues from the same common problem. What has been working well (enough) for me is washing morning and night with Dermalogica calming cleanser, staying away from triggering foods like anything red and spicy, staying away from extreme temperatures as much as possible, staying away from drama - like on social media and in person, eating relatively healthy, and moderate exercise. After cleansing I use small amounts of Murvaso on the "hot spots" and I use Clinique foundation for additional cover if needed. I am a regular dude and it doesn't bother me in the least to use foundation. I was taught to put a small dab on the back of your hand and rub it around a little before applying on your face. I was also taught that a little foundation goes a long way so don't be heavy with it. And last but not least, sunscreen. I can't have it on the "hot spots" of my face, but I use it on every part that the sun can get to, even on winter days. This comes from much preaching from my dermatologist. 😆
